At the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, sport in Portugal, in its most diverse forms, experienced a remarkable increase. The proposed reflection, preceded by a short passage through the semantics of the word sport in the Portuguese language in different historical periods and a filiation on the Socratic questions about the importance of physical education/sport for human welfare, signals based on news of the magazine Ilustração Portuguesa and with particular focus on the years between 1909-1912, the positive growth of sports practice in Portugal, leisure and competition, in those years preceding the first participation of the country in the Olympics of the modern era, in Stockholm. Meaning-making has been one of the primary domains of religion throughout history, and some have claimed that this is religion's central function. Yet, the modern era has seen a proliferation of other social institutions that generate meaning for people. Here we reflect on what religious meaning-making can tell us about meaning-making in secular institutions, with a particular focus on sport. Sport as a meaning-making institution is puzzling since sports are generally considered leisure activities, not serious enough to provide meaningful structure and purpose to human lives. Nonetheless, people do derive meaning from sport and we argue that because sport shares many features with religion, it offers a unique opportunity to examine a secular meaning-making institution. We offer a theoretical framework for the study of meaning-making that derives from our conceptual approach to religion as an adaptive system. We use this approach, and other anthropological research, to delineate seven general characteristics of human meaning-making systems: collective, constructed, subjective, narrative, relational, transcendent, and growth-oriented. These features of meaning-making systems highlight why sport has been so successful at offering meaning to sport enthusiasts, both fans and athletes alike. We conclude with a brief speculative evolutionary scenario that may explain our proclivity for seeking meaning, and why secular institutions will continue to fill that role when religious worldviews are not compelling. Western labeling is widely used to define a generation. However, this label was developed based on American history. Guided by Generational Cohort Theory, this research aims to define the generational cohorts of Malaysia based on historical events and collective memory. Twelve focus group interviews (FGI) were conducted. The findings revealed four generational cohorts, namely the Pre-Merdeka (Pre-Independence), Merdeka, Reformists, and Internet generations. Overall, the Pre-Merdeka generation who are in their late 70 s and early 80 s (born in 1944 and prior) clearly recounted the hardships and food scarcity during the Japanese Occupation. They care most for security and peace of the country. The Merdeka generation (50 s and 60 s years old or born between 1945 and 1964) recalled mostly various racial and political struggles during the run up to Malaysia attaining independence such as the 13th of May 1969 incident. The Reformists (30 s and 40 s age group born between 1965 and 1984) elicited memories on various national development and achievements in sports, politics, and computer technology. The Internet generation (in their 20 s or born from 1985 onwards) recalled mostly social media impact and smartphones while reminiscing on the birth of the new Malaysia in 2018. The Brazilian Congress of Sport History, Leisure and Physical Education (CHELEF) is a traditional event in Latin America which has been celebrated for more than 25 years in Brazil. Current paper, focusing on bibliographic production, investigates sport historiography in Brazil as provided by the proceedings of the Brazilian Congress of Sport History, Leisure and Physical Education between 1993 and 2016. Proceedings provided 1517 texts, of which 694 focus on sports. The history of sport historiography took into account themes, source types, historical periods, theory and methodology and the most quoted authors/papers in the texts in the Proceedings. Current sports historiography in Brazil has tried to break away from the legitimization of official narratives which proved to be universals and based on the myth of their origin. New aims, sources and theories of history were required for the social and dynamic conditions of academic events and post-graduate courses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article examines the attempt of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia to organise a breakthrough of the sports sanctions imposed on the country on 30 May, 1992. As a result of these sanctions, the country’s athletes were forced to participate in sports competitions without national emblems and flags. The next step was to be a complete ban on the participation of Yugoslav sport organisations in international competitions. In order to break through the international information blockade, the leadership of the FR of Yugoslavia tried to organise a commercial match between Robert Fischer and Boris Spassky, two veteran chess players, who played in the 1972 “Match of the Century.” The conference was organised by Jezdimir Vasiljević, a businessman who combined the cigarette and oil trade with the banking business. The results of this costly adventure were dubious. With the complete domination of huge international media corporations, positive results were almost impossible. However, the episode itself remains a bright page not only in the gloomy history of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, but also in the history of chess.

Almost thirty years after his retirement and nearly twenty years after his passing, Brian Clough remains a figure of great interest in post-war British sporting history. It was at his hometown club Middleborough that Clough first met the older Taylor, no more than an average goalkeeper but a footballing soulmate to the prolific striker, who also had an uncanny knack for being able to make the often intense Clough laugh. Lumbar spondylosis, though mostly occurs at pars interarticularis of vertebrae, it rarely occurs at articular processes. Like the ones in pars interarticularis, articular process fractures are stress fractures that are usually seen in people participated in active sprts activity. Most of the time, nonoperative treatment is adequate. When conservative treatment fails, removal of fragments accomplishes pain relief. Five years ago in I Sport History Review i , Carly Adams invited Canadian sports historians to think critically about how they went about their business. With this in mind, the recent inclusion of Willie O'Ree, the NHL's first black player, and Hayley Wickenheiser in Canadian Hockey's Hall of Fame is acknowledged and cautiously welcomed, though it remains to be seen if these small steps mark a significant change in the direction of travel. From the modern scientific perspective, Olympia is a ruin at the far end of a fading sense of history that represents little more than the origins from which sport has continuously evolved. Quantitative measurements show continued increases in human performance, equipment efficiency and funding. But some question this athletic evolution. We worry about qualitative issues, such as virtue, meaning and beauty. The source of this contrast is a difference in values: Olympic vs. Efficiency values. Such values establish an ethos in sporting communities that influences how we behave, explain and even conceptualize our activities. I argue from the perspectives of metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics, ethics and politics, that Olympic Ethos is needed to balance out the modern Efficiency Ethos, which threatens to dehumanize sport.
