301. Microwave Dielectric Properties of CdWO 4 Ceramics Prepared by Using High-energy Ball-milling Method.

Abstract

The CdWO4compound was prepared from CdO and WO3mixtures by high energy ball milling method and its microwave dielectric properties have been investigated. After milling 30 h, pure and well-crystallized CdWO4powders with an average grain size of 230 nm were obtained at 125°C. The CdWO4ceramics sintered at 950–1100°C have monoclinic structure belong to the space group P2/c(13), and when sintered at 1025°C, the ceramics exhibited good dielectric constant (ϵr) of ∼ 12.81,Q×fof ∼27000 GHz and τfof ∼−19.3 ppm/°C. Abstract

Two-dimensional MoS2nanoplates within carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with monolayer thickness, nanometer-scale dimensions and abundant edges are fabricated. This strategy provides a well-defined pathway for the precise design of MoS2nanomaterials, offering control over the evolution of MoS2morphology from nanoparticles to nanoplates as well as from mono- to several-layer structures, over a lateral dimension range of 5 to 70 nm. CNFs play an important role in confining the growth of MoS2nanoplates, leading to increases in the amount of exposed edge sites while hindering the stacking and aggregation of MoS2layers, and accelerating electron transfer. The controlled growth of MoS2nanoplates embedded in CNFs is leveraged to demonstrate structure-dependent catalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results suggest that increases in the number of layers and the lateral dimension result in a decrease in HER activity as a general rule. Single-layer MoS2nanoplates with abundant edges and a lateral dimension of 7.3 nm demonstrated the lowest hydrogen evolution reaction overpotential of 93 mV (J= 10 mA/cm2), the highest current density of 80.3 mA/cm2at η = 300 mV and the smallest Tafel slope of 42 mV/decade. The ability of MoS2–CNFs hybrids to act as nonprecious metal catalysts indicates their promise for use in energy-related electrocatalytic applications.

Abstract

Many recycled plastics are the polypropylene (PP)/poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) blends with PET as the minor component. The modification of such kinds of PP/PET blends for higher performance is essential as PP and PET are not thermodynamically compatible. In this study, the elastomer, SEBS- g-MAH, and the inorganics, halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are chosen as the modifiers for the modification of a model PP/PET blend (90/10). The mechanical performance of such blend is optimized by the selective dispersion of the nanotubular HNTs into the interfacial region of the blends via a two-step process. Compared with the control one, the overall mechanical properties of the blend are substantially improved. The crystallization of PP in the blend is also facilitated by the selective dispersion of HNTs and the folding surface free energy is substantially increased. The substantially improved mechanical performance is interpreted according to the formation of the unique morphology. Abstract

Poly(vinyl chloride)(PVC)/halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending. The effects of HNT content on the mechanical properties, morphology, and rheological properties of the nanocomposites were investigated. The results showed that HNTs were effective in toughening and reinforcing PVC nanocomposites. The notched impact, tensile and flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the nanocomposites were remarkably increased compared with those for the pure PVC. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results illustrated the ductile behavior of the nanocomposites, with a possible cavitation mechanism. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results showed that HNTs were uniformly dispersed in the PVC matrix. Interfacial interaction of hydrogen bonding between the HNTs and PVC matrix was substantiated. The plasticization times of PVC/HNTs nanocomposites were found to be shorter and the equilibrium torque was higher than that for the pure PVC. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

To introduce thiol-ene chemistry in the modification of composites by ionic liquid (IL), a novel functional IL, 1-methylimidazolium mercaptopropionate (MimMP), was synthesized and investigated as a modifier for styrene-butadiene rubber/silica composites. MimMP could be hydrogen-bonded with silica and react with the double bonds of rubber chains via thiol-ene chemistry. The filler networking, curing behavior, filler dispersion, crosslink density, and mechanical performance were fully studied. The filler networking in the uncured rubber compounds was effectively restrained. The vulcanization was largely accelerated by MimMP. The interfacial interaction was quantitatively evaluated and found to consistently increase with increasing MimMP. The mechanical performance and abrasion resistance of the modified vulcanizates improved considerably. The remarkable improvements were mainly ascribed to the improved interfacial structure comprised of MimMP-silica hydrogen bonding and MimMP-rubber covalent bonds via thiol-ene chemistry. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract

Natural occurred nanotubes, halloysite nanotubes, were modified by silane and incorporated into epoxy resin to form nanocomposites. The morphology of the nanocomposites was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed on the nanocomposites. Flexural property and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the nanocomposites were also determined. Comparing with the neat resin, about 40% increase in storage modulus at glassy state and 133% at rubbery state were achieved by incorporating 12 wt% modified HNTs into the epoxy matrix. In addition, the nanocomposites exhibited improved flexural strength, char yield and dimensional stability. TEM examination revealed a uniform dispersion of the nanotubes in the epoxy resin. The remarkably positive effects of the HNTs on the performance of the epoxy resin were correlated with the unique characteristics of the HNTs, the uniform dispersion and the possible interfacial reactions between the modified HNTs and the matrix. 322. Catalyzed silanization by supporting ceria on silica towards rubber composites with improved mechanical properties

Abstract

The silane modification in silica-filled rubber composites is essential to fulfil the potentials of silica. However, the silanization efficiency of silica generally remains unsatisfactory. Promoting silica silanization contributes to not only the improvements on composite properties, but also the reduction in volatile organic compound emissions during processing. In this work, we present a novel way to promote silica silanization in rubber composites by supporting ceria nanocrystals on silica surface. Specifically, silica supported with varied ceria nanocrystal loading is synthesized and used as a novel reinforcement for styrene-butadiene rubber. Model compound experiments demonstrate that the ceria on silica surface can effectively promote the silanization reaction based on its unique acid-base property. Due to the promoted silica silanization, silica dispersion is greatly improved and interfacial interaction is remarkably enhanced in the composites. Accordingly, the resulting composites filled with ceria-anchored silica exhibit desirable improvements on the tensile modulus and dynamic mechanical properties, which is conductive to tire application.

323. Extrudable Vitrimeric Rubbers Enabled via Heterogeneous Network Design

Abstract

The state-of-the-art reprocessing of vitrimers still struggles in crude hot-compression processes. The highly cross-linked nature and glass-like viscoelastic behavior of vitrimers critically restrict the network chain mobility, which limits the application of continuous processing techniques during reprocessing. Herein, a multiphase design strategy is outlined through incorporating highly cross-linked vitrimeric powders into a polymer matrix, followed by cross-linking with dynamic covalent bonds (DCBs) containing cross-linkers to form multiphase DCB-based networks. Accordingly, inhomogeneous stress distribution can be achieved inside the networks during deforming. The resulting high interfacial stress significantly accelerates the network relaxation upon mechanical activation enabling extrudable reprocessability to the vitrimeric rubbers with ∼100% recovery of overall performance. Moreover, the inhomogeneous stress distribution also promotes the chain orientation of the networks, leading to a remarkably mechanical reinforcement of the samples without compromising the elasticity. We envisage that this design concept can indeed facilitate the vitrimers toward industrial applications, which is significant to the sustainable development of rubber industry.

324. Rubber-reinforced rubbers toward the combination of high reinforcement and low energy loss.

Abstract

Reinforcement is a fundamental issue in rubber science and engineering. Traditionally, rubber reinforcement relies on the incorporation of rigid particles into rubber network or creation of the rubber network with dual-crosslink. However, all these methods inevitably sacrifice the unique elasticity of rubber, which is a shackle toward some crucial applications such as energy-saving tires. In this contribution, a novel strategy of rubber-reinforced rubber (3R) with the combination of significant reinforcement and high elasticity is proposed. With experimental/simulating integrated method, a brand-new reinforcing mechanism for rubber is disclosed, called soft matrix-induced large extensionability of hard rubber ("SMILE-HR"). The soft matrix endows the highly-crosslinked rubber particles (HPs) with the capacity of large extensionablity, so the molecular chains in HPs can be highly oriented and thus obtain high strength during stretching, which are primarily responsible for the dramatic reinforcement of 3R. This skillful combination of these two elastic constituents conquers the stubborn contradiction between reinforcement and elasticity, which is very promising for the engineering rubbers served in dynamic environment. A rubber-reinforced rubbers (3R) strategy is proposed to break the stubborn contradiction between reinforcement and elasticity of rubbers caused by the inherent defects of current reinforcing methods. Based on the new disclosed reinforcing mechanism for rubbers, soft matrix-induced large extensionability of hard rubber ("SMILE-HR"), this 3R material surprisingly presents the combination of high reinforcement and extremely low energy loss. Abstract

Summary: Attempts were made to prepare thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) from scrap rubber powder (SRP) and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) as thermoplastic polymer matrix. The solid-phase grafted copolymer of LLDPE (LLDPE-g-VM) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) were used as dual compatibilizers to improve the interfacial adhesion between SRP and LLDPE. The compatibilized SRP/LLDPE blends had obviously improved the interfacial properties between SRP particles and LLDPE. Using this method, thermoplastic elastomer was prepared successfully. The mechanical properties especially elongation at break was improved significantly. SEM and TEM studies showed that the ENR/LLDPE-g-VM dual compatibilizer improved the distribution state of SRP particles in LLDPE and the adhesion between SRP and LLDPE. DSC results showed a distinct glass transition at 74 °C of the interfacial region. The improvement in mechanical properties was attributed to the enhanced interfacial properties of the blend. 326. Delayed intestinal perforation associated with peritoneal dialysis: A case report of maintaining dialysis after perforation.

Abstract

Key Clinical Message: Delayed intestinal perforation has various manifestations. For peritonitis with delayed treatment and multi‐bacterial peritonitis, we should be alert to the occurrence of this rare complication. Abdominal CT examination and imaging results judgment based on clinical conditions are particularly important for diagnosis. Delayed intestinal perforation of peritoneal dialysis catheter is a rare but serious complication. We reported a 49‐year‐old patient who had been hospitalized twice within 3 months due to poor drainage of the peritoneal dialysis catheter. During the first hospitalization, peritoneal dialysis‐related peritonitis was diagnosed, and a variety of bacterial infections were cultivated. However, at that time, the actual peritoneal dialysis catheter‐related intestinal perforation was missed, and he was discharged after anti‐infection treatment until a clinical cure was met. After more than 2 months of normal peritoneal dialysis after returning home, the patient again had poor drainage of the peritoneal dialysis catheter, accompanied by the outflow of yellowish‐brown sediment. It was found that the peritoneal dialysis catheter had evidence of intestinal perforation. After the removal of the catheter and intestinal repair, he recovered and was discharged from the hospital and received long‐term hemodialysis treatment. In the case of delayed intestinal perforation, peritoneal dialysis was maintained normally for more than 2 months, which was an unprecedented situation in previous case reports. In addition, we should be alert to the occurrence of this rare complication, especially when we find the occurrence of polybacterial Peritonitis. Abstract

Abstract Surface modification of fillers has a profound influence on the dispersion of filler and interfacial adhesion, and thus the final performance of polymer-based composites. In this contribution, the modification of silica by polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS) is conducted via an efficient and fast tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane-catalyzed functionalization, which can be completed within a few minutes at room temperature. A highly hydrophobic surface and an uncompromised reactivity are concurrently observed in the modified silica. By comparison between the composites filled with pristine and modified silica, it is revealed that such PMHS modification can not only improve the dispersibility of silica by lowering the surface energy, but also enhance the interfacial interaction in virtue of the reactivity of the residual Si H bonds. With a PMHS grafting content as low as 1.5 wt%, the modified composite exhibits tremendous improvements in mechanical properties (116% increase in modulus) and dynamic performances (116% increase in wet traction and 26% reduction in rolling resistance). Considering the superior overall performance of the modified composites, together with the simplicity and rapidity of the modification process, we envision that the hydrosilane-modified silica has great potential in the fabrication of high-performance polymer composites such as energy-saving tire treads. 328. Ni5P4-embedded FeV LDH porous nanosheets for enhancing oxygen evolution and urea oxidation reactions.

Abstract

At present, it is still challenging to design high-performance and low-cost non-noble mental catalysts. In this work, nickel phosphide (Ni5P4) was combined with FeV LDH via an in situ growth approach to form porous nanosheet arrays. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of atoms between Ni5P4 and FeV LDH, the hybrid electrocatalyst displays significantly enhanced electro-catalytic properties for the anodic reaction. Impressively, the Ni5P4@FeV LDH material delivers 10, 50 and 100 mA cm−2 with an overpotential of only 204, 250 and 416 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Additionally, it also exhibits superior properties for the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) with a low cell voltage of 1.44 V at 50 mA cm−2 and retains stability for at least 15 h in the alkaline electrolyte with 0.33 M urea. This strategy provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of transition metal phosphides that can be used as an efficient electrocatalyst for electrolysis of water and wastewater treatment. Abstract

Catalysts with high catalytic activity and low cost are extremely significant for hydrogen production by water cracking. In this work, through simple electrospinning and carbonization methods, Ru with excellent catalytic activity is dispersed onto Fe4C to form Ru–Fe4C nanoparticles loaded on N-doped carbon nanofibers (Ru–Fe4C/NCNF), so that Ru can expose more active sites and thus improve HER catalytic activity. Meanwhile, the addition of low-cost Fe can reduce the use of noble metal Ru, thereby reducing the catalyst cost. On the other hand, the prepared Ru–Fe4C/NCNF can be used as a self-supporting working electrode and shows good stability. The experimental results show that the prepared Ru–Fe4C/NCNF can drive a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with only 106 mV in 1 M KOH, and more importantly, only 254 mV can produce a current density of 100 mA cm−2. At the same time, it shows excellent stability after continuously working for 100 h at a current density of 100 mA cm−2. As diene rubber products are generally fabricated with complicated curing package involving toxic additives, the exploration of alternative green curing chemistry for diene rubber is of great importance. In this contribution, we demonstrate a curing chemistry based on oxa-Michael reaction for diene rubber to achieve the combination of simple curing system and tunable mechanical properties. Specifically, pendent hydroxyls are introduced onto the solution-polymerized styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) via thiol-ene click reaction and the modified SSBR is effectively cured by various acrylates without the use of any additional additives. The mechanical behaviors of vulcanizates can be widely regulated by manipulating the network structures, which is tuned by curing temperature, hydroxyl content of SSBR, content and functionality of acrylates. The correlation between mechanical properties and network structure is accordingly achieved, which provides essential basis for the future application of the diene rubbers cured by oxa-Michael reaction. It has been commonly acknowledged that particle dispersion and interfacial interactions are vital in determining the ultimate performance of polymer composites. However, the interplay between dispersibility and interfacial interaction in polymer composites has not been explicitly unraveled. In this contribution, a series of silica with controlled surface chemistry are prepared to reveal the effects of subtle change in surface property of filler on the structures and mechanical performance of the rubber composites. On the basis of thermodynamic theory, the dispersibility of modified silica in rubber is quantitatively evaluated by using surface energy. Interfacial interaction plays a vital role in the final properties of polymer composites as it affects the filler dispersion and stress transfer in the composites. In this study, we utilized two types of phosphate ester, hydroxyethyl methylacrylate phosphate (PH) and butyl phosphate (PB), as modifiers in boehmite (BM)-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) to tailor the interfacial structures in the composites. The modification mechanism of phosphate ester on BM and the interfacial structure in the composites are characterized. In PH-modified BM/SBR composites, a covalently bonding interface is obtained because PH can act as molecular bridge that can form covalent linkage with both BM and SBR chains. Consequently, the resulting composites show significantly improvements in the physical and mechanical properties of the composites. Polydopamine (PDA) is a natural melanin derived from marine mussels that has good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and photothermal conversion ability. As a new coating material, it offers a novel way to modify the surface of various substances. The drug loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency of PDA are greatly improved via the use of mesoporous materials. The abundant pore canals on mesoporous polydopamine (MPDA) exhibit a uniquely large surface area, which provides a structural basis for drug delivery. In this review, we systematically summarized the characteristics and manufacturing process of MPDA, introduced its application in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and discussed the existing problems in its development and clinical application. Abstract

Background: Tumor glycolysis is a critical event for tumor progression. Docetaxel is widely used as a first-line drug for chemotherapy and shown to have a survival advantage. However, the role of docetaxel in tumor glycolysis remained poorly understood. Methods: The effect of Docetaxel in tumor glycolysis and proliferation were performed by CCK-8, Western blotting, real-time PCR, glucose, and lactate detection and IHC. ChIP and luciferase assay were used to analyze the mechanism of Docetaxel on Smad3-mediated HIF-1α transactivity. Results: In this study, we showed that docetaxel treatment led to a significant inhibition of cell proliferation in prostate cancer cells through PFKP-mediated glycolysis. Addition of lactate, a production of glycolysis, could reverse the inhibitory effect of docetaxel on cell proliferation. Further analysis has demonstrated that phosphorylation of Smad3 (Ser213) was drastically decreased in response to docetaxel stimulation, leading to reduce Smad3 nuclear translocation. Luciferase and Chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) analysis revealed that docetaxel treatment inhibited the binding of Smad3 to the promoter of the HIF-1α gene, suppressing transcriptional activation of HIF-1α. Moreover, ectopic expression of Smad3 in prostate cancer cells could overcome the decreased HIF-1α expression and its target gene PFKP caused by docetaxel treatment. Most importantly, endogenous Smad3 regulated and interacted with HIF-1α, and this interaction was destroyed in response to docetaxel treatment. What's more, both HIF-1α and PFKP expression were significantly reduced in prostate cancer received docetaxel treatment in vivo. Abstract

Developing high-performance and earth-abundant electrocatalysts for hydrogen production by electrolysis of freshwater/seawater is desirable but remains a huge challenge, especially in seawater solution. Herein, we report an efficient catalyst for a cathode consisting of three-dimensional standing arrays of Mo-Ni2P/CC nanosheets uniformly grown on carbon cloth, in which the Mo doping improved the HER properties of Ni2P by providing applicable morphology, electronic properties and active sites. It is found that the as-obtained catalyst shows superior HER activity with a low overpotential of 113 and 154 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1 M KOH and simulated alkaline seawater solution, respectively. Moreover, the Mo–Ni2P/CC catalyst exhibits favorable stability in 5000 CV cycles in 1 M KOH and reasonable stability in a 20 h stability test in alkaline, simulated seawater and alkaline seawater solution. The results show that Ni 2 P @ MoS 2 /CC had more active sites than Ni 2 P/CC and MoS 2 /CC catalysts. In addition, the interface interaction based on heterogeneous structure promotes its charge transfer kinetics. In alkaline electrolyte, Ni 2 P @ MoS 2 /CC electrocatalyst had good HER performance. At a current density of 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential was 99 mV, and the Tafel slope was 97 mV dec−1. The substitution of noble metal catalysts with earth abundant TMs as electrocatalysts for hydrogen production is of great significance. One biggest bottleneck for high-efficiency water electrolysis in TM catalysts is the sluggish reaction kinetics or electron transport efficiency. The electrical coupling between the substrate and the catalytic material can accelerate the electron transport, enhancing the charge transfer kinetics, and thereby improve the catalytic performance of the catalyst. Herein, we report a sandwich-structured CNF/Co 3 S 4 /MoS 2 , MoS 2 grown in-situ on N-doped nanofibers with Co 3 S 4 nanoparticles via electrospinning, carbonization and hydrothermal process, as self-supported electrodes for hydrogen evolution reaction. The sandwich structure is comprised of CNFs/Co 3 S 4 /MoS 2 as substrate/accelerator/catalyst. Thereinto, the three-dimensional CNF framework, intrinsically doped by nitrogen, can open accessible channels for reactants and served as substrates for the in-situ growth of Co 3 S 4 and MoS 2 nanocrystals with high conductivity and massive active sites. Hence, the CNF/Co 3 S 4 /MoS 2 shows outstanding catalytical performance in water electrospinning, only 80 mV required to drive 10 mA cm−2 current density with the Tafel slope of 99.2 mV dec−1 in alkaline media. Besides, the performance can be maintained for at least 40 h with negligible decline. This experiment can provide a new idea for the design of efficient and stable self-supporting electrodes. With the development of power industry, the recycling of waste insulator silicone rubber (WSR) remains a significant challenge. Herein, an efficient alcoholysis strategy for the surface modification of WSR was explored by using nerol as alcoholysis reagent, and then the nerol modified WSR (Nerol-WSR) was utilized in polypropylene toughening. FTIR spectra indicate that nerol can served as nucleophilic reagent to cleave the Si–O bonds in WSR, resulting in an efficient surface grafting of nerol moieties on WSR. The grafting content of nerol moieties gradually increases with alcoholysis times. Morphology investigation demonstrates that with the increase of alcoholysis time, the dispersion state of Nerol-WSR particles in PP matrix is significantly improved, along with a much smaller particle size. Accordingly, with the addition of 10 wt.% of Nerol-WSR, the resulting PP composites can achieve a remarkable increase of approximately 200% in impact strength. This should be due to the grafted nerol moieties can substantially improve the interfacial adhesion of the composites and hence facilitate the dispersion of WSR particles in PP matrix. Therefore, the stress concentration of PP can also be effectively delivered to the adjacent Nerol-WSR and thus retard the propagation of cracks. Pt-based catalysts suffered from the wastage of active sites, resulting in unsatisfactory actual catalytic performance and poor durability as non-self-supporting catalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this work, we designed a self-supporting electrode material with multi-level structure that utilized carbon nanofibers anchored with cobalt to load and stabilize Pt nanoparticles (Pt@Co/CNFs) for achieving high activity and stability in alkaline HER. The carbon nanofibers served as a framework, with cobalt nanoparticles as an electron donor that can transfer electrons to the metal Pt to accelerating water splitting. In addition, the morphology of the multi-level structure surface was controlled by the content of the reducing agent to giving the material excellent superhydrophilic/underwater superaerophobic properties with ultra-low Pt load (0.29 mg cm−2), which was beneficial for HER. HER test results showed that Pt@Co/CNFs exhibited great catalytic activity, with η 10 = 15 mV and η 100 = 101 mV. Besides, the stable mechanical structure and the stability of the designed catalytic surface and electron donor in the multi-level structure gave the material exceptional stability. During the 100-hour stability test at 100 mA cm−2, the voltage change was only 50 mV. Besides, utilizing the Pt@Co/CNFs self-supporting electrode directly in the AEM water electrolysis system, a cell voltage as low as 2.18 V was achieved at 500 mA cm−2. Abstract

Alloying noble metals with abundant transition metals is an effective strategy for preparing cost-effective electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction. In this study, hollow carbon nanofibers loaded with RuCoNi ternary alloy nanofiber catalysts (RuCoNi/CNFs) were synthesized by coaxial electrostatic spinning and a high-temperature carbonization approach. The interconnected three-dimensional hollow nanofibers, uniformly loaded with RuCoNi alloy nanoparticles, provided a large specific surface area and a hierarchical porous structure to enhance the interaction between the electrolyte and the active sites. Additionally, the hollow structure facilitated active sites exposure, charge transport, and gas diffusion, resulting in excellent HER activity of RuCoNi/CNFs. The overpotential required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2 under alkaline conditions was only 47 mV, outperforming the homemade Pt/C catalyst (54 mV). Moreover, the carbon structure acted as a conductive carrier for efficient electron transfer, protecting the alloy nanoparticles from aggregation and corrosion. The RuCoNi/CNFs demonstrated remarkable stability and durability, maintaining consistent performance even after 100 hours of continuous operation. We reported the use of an inverse vulcanised polysulfide (SP) as an intelligent interfacial modifier in the NR/CB composites to remarkably decrease the hysteresis loss by enhancing the interfacial adhesion and improving CB dispersion. Specifically, SP synthesized by the bulk copolymerization of sulfur and styrene was grafted onto CB surface by trapping the sulfur radicals generated from SP, and the grafted polysulfides can participate in the crosslinking reaction with NR, which greatly improves CB dispersion and strengthens interfacial adhesion in the composites. Janus membranes are widely used in fields such as oil-water separation and wound dressings due to their asymmetric wetting properties. However, the weak interface binding force between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic layers can affect the liquid transport performance and membrane separation. In this study, we have reported a method using self-induced crystallization to grow shish-kebab (SK) structures in electrospinning polylactic acid-based fiber membranes. Peel testing revealed that the peel load after induced crystallization increased from 0 to 0.05 N to 0.05–0.15 N, and the time for droplets to penetrate from the hydrophobic side to the hydrophilic side decreased from 16S to 3S. This indicates that SK structures can enhance the adhesion between the hydrophilic and hydrophobic interface, as well as facilitating droplet transport. Through the oil-water separation experiment, it was discovered that the presence of SK structures can filter out more microemulsions. For different emulsions (kerosene, petroleum, n-hexane, petroleum ether, tea tree oil), the separation efficiency of Janus-SK membrane increased by 1.67 %, 2.5 %, 3.0 %, 9.7 %, 4.3 %, respectively. Abstract

The wet traction, rolling resistance and abrasion resistance have rarely been improved simultaneously in tread rubbers, which is regarded as "magic triangle" in tire industry. Recently, we have demonstrated that phosphoniums are effective in lowering rolling resistance of tread via catalyzing the interfacial silanization. In addition, incorporating the C5/C9-based petroleum resin into tread formulation is a well-established technology toward high wet traction. Accordingly, we aim to solve the "magic triangle" dilemma by using phosphonium-modified petroleum resin (PSR), which is prepared through a two-step reaction. PSR is incorporated into the silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites with bis [3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl] tetrasulfide (TESPT). Due to the electrostatic interaction between PSR and silica, the dispersion of silica is improved. Moreover, PSR exhibits catalytic effect on the interfacial silanization, leading to the improvement of interfacial interactions. With incorporation of 2 phr of PSR, the tan δ at 0 °C and abrasion loss of the rubber composite are increased by 19% and decreased by 28%, respectively, which suggests that the wet traction and abrasion resistance are increased. The tan δ at 60 °C of the rubber composite is decreased by 14%, indicating that the rolling resistance is decreased. In addition, the overall excellent "magic triangle" performance of a typical tread rubber is also demonstrated by incorporating PSR, indicating that PSR has great potential in practical applications. We envisage that this study provides a new solution for high-performance tread rubber for green tires. Bio-based epoxidized soybean oil is applied as a new green cross-linking agent to crosslink diene rubbers, opening a green avenue and cost-effective approach for high-efficiency recycling of covalently cross-linked diene rubbers. Currently adopted cross-linking methods in rubber industry are suffering from variable persistent issues, including the utilization of toxic curing packages, release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and difficulties in the recycling of end-of-life materials. It is of great importance to explore a green cross-linking strategy in the area. Herein, we report a new "green" strategy based on hydrolyzable ester cross-links for cross-linking diene-typed elastomers. As a proof of concept, a commercial carboxylated nitrile rubber (XNBR) is efficiently cross-linked by a bio-based agent, epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), without any toxic additives. ESO exhibits an excellent plasticization effect and excellent scorch safety for XNBR. The cross-linking density and mechanical properties of the ESO-cured XNBR can be manipulated in a wide range by changing simply varying the content of ESO. In addition, zinc oxide (ZnO) performs as a catalyst to accelerate the epoxide opening reaction and improve the cross-linking efficiency, serving as reinforcement points to enhance the overall mechanical properties of the ESO-cured XNBR. Furthermore, the end-of-life elastomer materials demonstrate a closed-loop recovery by selectively cleaving the ester bonds, resulting in very high recovery of the mechanical performance of the recycled composites. This strategy provides an unprecedented green avenue to cross-link diene elastomers and a cost-effective approach to further recycle the obtained cross-linked elastomers at high efficiency. Abstract

Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) are a promising catalyst material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, we introduced inexpensive red phosphorus (P 4) into a homogeneous solution as a phosphorus source. Using the electrostatic spinning technique combined with high temperature carbonization, we successfully prepared self-supported carbon nanofibers doped with nitrogen (N) and loaded with ruthenium (Ru)-modified cobalt phosphide (Co 2 P) nanoparticles catalysts (Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs). The Ru@Co 2 P phosphide nanoparticles were evenly distributed on the surface of the carbon fibers, forming a three-dimensional network structure. The synergistic effect between the Ru and Co 2 P systems resulted in excellent catalytic activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solutions. The N-doped conducting carbon matrix and large specific surface area of the active sites contributed to this enhanced performance. The Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs catalysts only required an overpotential of 48 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, outperforming the noble metal platinum/carbon (Pt/C) catalysts, which required an overpotential of 52 mV. Furthermore, the Ru@Co 2 P nanoparticles were protected by a carbon layer, preventing catalyst corrosion during long-term operation. The HER performance of the Ru@Co 2 P/CNFs catalysts remained stable even after 40 h of continuous operation, demonstrating their long-lasting stability. Abstract

The decoration of sacrificial units (SUs) into rubber network has gained momentum as a non-filling alternative toward efficient network reinforcement. However, most established methods, including the copolymerization with SUs-containing monomers or the post-modification of rubber backbone, still suffer from the multi-step and time-consuming backbone preparation with poor designability. In this work, we proposed a facile and practical strategy to achieve efficient network reinforcement through in - situ decorating isoprene rubber (IR) network with N -carbamyl maleamic acid (NCMA) as SUs. Model compound vulcanization experiment demonstrated that during sulfur vulcanization, the poly/disulfides in active sulfurating agents or crosslinking precursors can cleave into reactive sulfur radicals, which subsequently proceeded radical addition reaction with the unsaturated NCMA. The decorated carbamyl maleamic handles can spontaneously form multiple hydrogen-bonding linkages to serve as SUs. Upon deformation, the reversible detachment/reattachment of the SUs will smooth out the local stress concentration, but also facilitate the orientation of network chains. Therefore, as the NCMA loading increases, the onset of strain-induced crystallization and the overall crystallinity of the obtained IR network are simultaneously promoted, giving rise to a gradual increase in the tensile modulus (∼80 %) of the system. By virtue of the rich variety, commercial availability and facile structural tunability of maleamic acid-derivatives, we envisage that the present study can open up a novel strategy to achieve in - situ decoration of rubber with various functional handles toward efficient network reinforcement and functionalization. Abstract

Background The effects of empagliflozin in patients with chronic kidney disease who are at risk for disease progression are not well understood. The EMPA-KIDNEY trial was designed to assess the effects of treatment with empagliflozin in a broad range of such patients. Methods We enrolled patients with chronic kidney disease who had an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) of at least 20 but less than 45 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 of body-surface area, or who had an eGFR of at least 45 but less than 90 ml per minute per 1.73 m2 with a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (with albumin measured in milligrams and creatinine measured in grams) of at least 200. Patients were randomly assigned to receive empagliflozin (10 mg once daily) or matching placebo. The primary outcome was a composite of progression of kidney disease (defined as end-stage kidney disease, a sustained decrease in eGFR to Results A total of 6609 patients underwent randomization. During a median of 2.0 years of follow-up, progression of kidney disease or death from cardiovascular causes occurred in 432 of 3304 patients (13.1%) in the empagliflozin group and in 558 of 3305 patients (16.9%) in the placebo group (hazard ratio, 0.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.64 to 0.82; PConclusions Among a wide range of patients with chronic kidney disease who were at risk for disease progression, empagliflozin therapy led to a lower risk of progression of kidney disease or death from cardiovascular causes than placebo. Abstract Constructing three-dimensional segregated graphene (3DG) network in polymer matrix is very effective in fabricating highly conductive polymer composites. However, it remains challenging to control the distribution of graphene with a concise and efficient method though the past efforts have been made. In this contribution, we propose a novel hydrothermal self-assembled strategy in combination of the post-impregnation process to prepare highly conductive polymer/graphene composites. Specifically, styrene-butadiene rubber/graphene nanocomposites with a three-dimensional graphene network (3DG-SBR) were prepared by employing the hydrothermal self-assembling, followed by impregnating by silver nitrate. The resultant graphene/styrene-butadiene rubber/silver particle (3DG-SBR-Ag) nanocomposite with 1.66 vol% of graphene exhibits the conductivity of 512 S m−1, which is competitive to those prepared by template-guided assembly strategy. Impressively, the polymer composite possesses mechanical robustness due to the strong interfacial reaction between graphene and polymer matrix. This synthetic approach for graphene-based nanocomposites is generic, scalable, flexibility in complex geometry and cost-effective. The as-prepared products could potentially be applied as competitive candidates for practical application in electromagnetic wave absorption and electromagnetic interference shielding. Abstract

Abstract A combination of malleability, supramechanical properties and multi-stimuli response into catalyst-free and commercially available polymer-based networks is particularly attractive to extend the realm of thermally malleable polymers. Toward this goal, herein we demonstrated a paradigm by introducing dynamic imine bonds into styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR)/graphene composites. SBR was firstly grafted with aldehyde groups and then cross-linked with p -phenylene diamine and it-modified graphene through imine condensation between aldehyde and amino groups. The crosslinked networks were able to alter their topologies via imine exchange reactions in both the bulk network and SBR-graphene interphase in the absence of catalyst, enabling them to be recycled and reshaped under heating or IR irradiation. The incorporation of graphene led to spectacular improvements on the mechanical properties of vitrimer composites, and the mechanical properties could be tuned through solid-state drawing. Abstract

Abstract Covalently cross-linked elastomers with high elasticity are widely found in daily life and high-tech areas. However, the irreversibility of the crosslinked networks hinders the rubber products from reprocessing or recycling, causing a major environmental problem. Recently developed vitrimer chemistry provides fantastic avenues for cross-linked elastomers to achieve full reprocessability and recyclability. Herein, we disclose a novel C N transalkylation of pyridinium by model studies and implant this chemistry into the interfaces of an elastomeric composite. As a proof of concept, (3-bromopropyl)trimethoxysilane modified silica was used to crosslink butadiene-styrene-vinylpyridine rubber, forming pyridiniums in the interfaces. The composites were prepared by straightforward mechanical compounding and subsequent hot-pressing. Because of the covalent interfacial bridges and excellent dispersion of silica, the composites possess robust mechanical properties. Furthermore, the C N transalkylation reactions of pyridiniums at elevated temperature endows the composites with vitrimer properties, such as malleability and reprocessability. As the pyridine moieties can be easily introduced into a great variety of commercial polymers, we envision this newly demonstrated C N transalkylation of pyridinium possesses significant potential in broadening the gallery of vitrimer materials.
