A wearable all-plastic imaging system for real-time fluorescence image-guided surgery is presented. The compact size of the system is especially suitable for applications in the operating room. The system consists of a dual-mode imaging system, see-through goggle, autofocusing, and auto-contrast tuning modules. The paper will discuss the system design and demonstrate the system performance. Near infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging has shown great potential for various clinical procedures, including intraoperative image guidance. However, existing NIR fluorescence imaging systems either have a large footprint or are handheld, which limits their usage in intraoperative applications. We present a compact NIR fluorescence imaging system (NFIS) with an image overlay solution based on threshold detection, which can be easily integrated with a goggle display system for intraoperative guidance. The proposed NFIS achieves compactness, light weight, hands-free operation, high-precision superimposition, and a real-time frame rate. In addition, the miniature and ultra-lightweight light-emitting diode tracking pod is easy to incorporate with NIR fluorescence imaging. Based on experimental evaluation, the proposed NFIS solution has a lower detection limit of 25 nM of indocyanine green at 27 fps and realizes a highly precise image overlay of NIR and visible images of mice in vivo. The near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence signal in the 700 to 900 nm from molecular probes used in fluorescence image-guided surgery (FIGS) is usually weak compared to the NIR component from white light-emitting diode surgical light, which is typically switched off during FIGS to enhance the molecular fluorescence contrast of the image. We have developed a near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence goggle system based on the complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor active pixel sensor imaging and see-through display technologies. The fluorescence goggle systemis a compact wearable intraoperative fluorescence imaging and display systemthat can guide surgery in real time. The goggle is capable of detecting fluorescence of indocyanine green solution in the picomolar range. Aided by NIR quantumdots, we successfully used the fluorescence goggle to guide sentinel lymph nodemapping in a rat model. We further demonstrated the feasibility of using the fluorescence goggle in guiding surgical resection of breast cancer metastases in the liver in conjunction with NIR fluorescent probes. A 189 × 182 active pixel sensor (APS) for temporal difference computation is presented. The temporal difference imager (TDI), fabricated in 0.5-µm CMOS process, contains in-pixel storage elements for a previous image frame. Difference double-sampling circuits are used to suppress the fixed pattern noise in both images and to compute the difference between the corrected images. The pixel area occupies 25 µm by 25 µm (using 0.7-µm scalable rules), with fill factor of 30%. A novel pipelined readout technique is described, which is used to improve the accuracy of the temporal difference computation. With this pipelined readout architecture, >8-bit precision for the difference image and Iow spatial droop across the difference image is achieved. Polarization cameras quantify one of the fundamental properties of light and capture intrinsic properties of the imaged environment that are otherwise omitted by color sensors. Many polarization applications, such as underwater geolocalization and sky-based polarization compass, require simultaneous imaging of the entire radial optical field with omnidirectional lenses. However, the reconstructed angle of polarization captured with omnidirectional lenses has a radial offset due to redirection of the light rays within these lenses. In this paper, we describe a calibration method for correcting angle of polarization images captured with omnidirectional lenses. Our calibration method reduces the variance of reconstructed angle of polarization from 76.2 ∘ to 4.1 ∘ . Example images collected both on an optical bench and in nature, demonstrate the improved accuracy of the reconstructed angle of polarization with our calibration method. The improved accuracy in the angle of polarization images will aid the development of polarization-based applications with omnidirectional lenses.
