Abstract

Central limit theorems for the log-volume of a class of random convex bodies in Rn are obtained in the high-dimensional regime, that is, as n → ∞. In particular, the case of random simplices pinned at the origin and simplices where all vertices are generated at random is investigated. The coordinates of the generating vectors are assumed to be independent and identically distributed with subexponential tails. In addition, asymptotic normality is also established for random convex bodies (including random simplices pinned at the origin) when the spanning vectors are distributed according to a radially symmetric probability measure on the n-dimensional lp-ball. Abstract

As the quest toward novel materials proceeds, improved characterization technologies are needed. In particular, the atomic thickness in graphene and other 2D materials renders some conventional technologies obsolete. Characterization technologies at wafer level are needed with enough sensitivity to detect strain in order to inform fabrication. In this work, NEXAFS spectroscopy was combined with simulations to predict lattice parameters of graphene grown on copper and further transferred to a variety of substrates. The strains associated with the predicted lattice parameters are in agreement with experimental findings. The approach presented here holds promise to effectively measure strain in graphene and other 2D systems at wafer levels to inform manufacturing environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

333. On the Need of Improved Accelerated Degradation Protocols (ADPs): Examination of Platinum Dissolution and Carbon Corrosion in Half-Cell Tests

Abstract

In this work we employ the advanced scanning flow cell based analytical techniques, viz. inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SFC-ICP-MS) and on-line electrochemical mass-spectrometry (SFC-OLEMS) to directly detect the amounts of dissolved platinum and evolved carbon dioxide in two protocols that are commonly used in the fuel cell community to simulate load cycle and start-stop conditions in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In contrast to previous assumptions, claiming a separation between carbon corrosion and platinum dissolution, in both standard protocols platinum dissolution and carbon corrosion are present at low rates, which is also reflected by a comparably low ECSA decrease. On the other hand, a huge increase in rate of both processes is observed during transitions from low to high potential regimes experienced by a PEMFC in operation, here studied in a third protocol covering the whole potential range from 0.6 to 1.5 VRHE. The latter is typically not addressed in literature. This finding is explained by taking into account platinum catalyzed carbon corrosion and transient platinum dissolution. Based on the obtained results, the question is raised on the practical adequacy of the standard protocols for differentiation of degradation processes and simulation of the degradation processes occurring in PEMFCs.

Abstract

Hot‐dip galvanized steel structures are well established and state of the art for public and industrial buildings. They can achieve a corrosion protection period in the magnitude of the lifetime of the structures (≥100 years). The application of this corrosion protection system would also have great potential in bridge construction. Economic efficiency and sustainability in bridge construction are, in addition to the cost of new building, determined by the incurred maintenance costs. Various research projects demonstrate hardly any losses on the fatigue strength compared to the non‐galvanized steel components. Large bridge structures must be designed with assembly joints. Welded site joints of hot‐dip galvanized components require a complex pre‐ and post‐treatment of the corrosion protection. Nevertheless, on‐site applied corrosion protection cannot reach the protection durability of a hot‐dip galvanizing. This technological restriction can be avoided by the use of hot‐dip galvanized bolted connections. Slip‐resistant pre‐stressed connections are proved successful in steel bridge construction. Major scientific investigations are not yet available for the use of slip‐resistant connections for hot‐dip galvanized joints. Technical and scientific foundations for the application of hot‐dip galvanized bolted connections in cyclically loaded steel and composite bridge constructions, based on the European standard for steel constructions, are investigated within the scope of this research project. 335. The pH Dependence of Magnesium Dissolution and Hydrogen Evolution during Anodic Polarization

Abstract

The dissolution of magnesium (Mg) has been investigated with an electrochemical flow cell coupled to downstream analysis. The setup allows for polarization experiments and simultaneous determination of the amount of dissolved magnesium ions via inductively coupled plasma - mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Additionally, Mg dissolution was compared to hydrogen evolution measurements in the flow cell and also in standard beakers. Experiments were performed in unbuffered NaCl and in buffered solutions of various pH to determine the influence of the pH on surface film stability and Mg dissolution. In borate buffer (pH 10.5), Mg(OH)2was found to be more stable than in unbuffered electrolyte. In the flow cell, the negative difference effect (NDE) was absent for low anodic polarization currents in a neutral buffered solution, whilst high anodic polarization currents and unbuffered electrolytes favored its existence. In beaker experiments, strong NDE was observed in a pH 10.5 buffer, and also in pH 7 and 3 buffers, but only at higher applied currents where the buffering capacity was locally overwhelmed. These observations validate the importance of the pH in near surface regions with respect to the stability of Mg-surface films and subsequent NDE.

Abstract

International audience; As in all countries of the former USSR, the migration system of the Central Asian republics has undergone profound changes since independence. The emigration of Russian-speaking populations, which began at the end of the Soviet period, and the labour migration of Central Asian populations, which has taken on considerable proportions since the late 1990s in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan are the most studied international migrations in the region, with some "return" migrations to "historical homelands". But Central Asian countries are also facing increased mobility of highly skilled people to Europe, North America, Russia, etc. This "brain drain" is part of a global dynamic of skills circulation. It questions Central Asian states and societies about their development model and their place in globalization.

Abstract

Economic efficiency and sustainability in bridge construction are, in addition to the cost of new building, determined by the incurred maintenance costs. Hot‐dip galvanized bridge constructions can achieve a corrosion protection period in the magnitude of their lifetime (≥ 100 years). Hot‐dip galvanized steel structures are well established and state of the art for public and industrial buildings. Various research projects demonstrate hardly any losses on the fatigue strength compared to the non‐galvanized steel components. Welded site joints of hot‐dip galvanized components require a complex pre‐ and post‐treatment of the corrosion protection. Nevertheless, on‐site applied corrosion protection cannot reach the protection durability of a hot‐dip galvanizing. This technological restriction can be avoided by the use of hot‐dip galvanized bolted connections. Slip‐resistant pre‐stressed connections are proved successful in steel bridge construction. Major scientific investigations are not yet available for the use of slip‐resistant connections for hot‐dip galvanized joints. Technical and scientific foundations for the application of hot‐dip galvanized bolted connections in cyclically loaded steel and composite bridge constructions, based on the European standard for steel constructions, are investigated within the scope of a research project at the MPA. Abstract

Objective: Blood bicarbonate concentration plays an important role for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients to maintain acid-base balance. We investigated the association between arterial standard bicarbonate ([HCO3-]) and nocturnal hypoxia as well as comorbid hypertension in OSA.Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of 3329 patients in the European Sleep Apnea Database (ESADA) was performed. Arterial blood gas analysis and lung function test were performed in conjunction with polysomnographic sleep studies. The 4% oxygen desaturation index (ODI), mean and minimum oxygen saturation (SpO2), and percentage of time with SpO2 below 90% (T90%) were used to reflect nocturnal hypoxic burden. Arterial hypertension was defined as a physician diagnosis of hypertension with ongoing antihypertensive medication. Hypertensive patients with SBP/DBP below or above 140/90 mmHg were classified as controlled-, uncontrolled hypertension, respectively.Results: The [HCO3-] level was normal in most patients (average 24.0 +/- 2.5 mmol/L). Abstract

In obstructive sleep apnea, patients' sleep is fragmented leading to excessive daytime sleepiness and co-morbidities like arterial hypertension. However, traditional metrics are not always directly correlated with daytime sleepiness, and the association between traditional sleep quality metrics like sleep duration and arterial hypertension is still ambiguous. In a development cohort, we analysed hypnograms from mild (n=213), moderate (n=235) and severe (n=277) obstructive sleep apnea patients as well as healthy controls (n=105) from the European Sleep Apnea Database. We assessed sleep by the analysis of two-step transitions depending on obstructive sleep apnea severity and anthropometric factors. Two-step transition patterns were examined for an association to arterial hypertension or daytime sleepiness. We also tested cumulative distributions of wake as well as sleep-states for power-laws (exponent α) and exponential distributions (decay time τ) in dependency on obstructive sleep apnea severity and potential confounders. Independent of obstructive sleep apnea severity and potential confounders, wake-state durations followed a power-law distribution, while sleep-state durations were characterized by an exponential distribution. Sleep-stage transitions are influenced by obstructive sleep apnea severity, age and gender. N2 → N3 → wake transitions were associated with high diastolic blood pressure. We observed higher frequencies of alternating (symmetric) patterns (e.g. N2 → N1 → N2, N2 → wake → N2) in sleepy patients both in the development cohort and in a validation cohort (n=425). In conclusion, effects of obstructive sleep apnea severity and potential confounders on sleep architecture are small, but transition patterns still link sleep fragmentation directly to obstructive sleep apnea-related clinical outcomes like arterial hypertension and daytime sleepiness.
