The infrared and Raman spectra of triosereductone in polycrystalline state as well as its 1H-n.m.r. spectrum in DMSO-solution support a structure with two five-membered chelate rings.

Huminstoffe (HUS) sind in allen Gewassern vorhanden. Ihre analytische Identifizierung und Quantifizierung leidet an der mangelnden Kenntnis der Gesamtstruktur. Zur Charakterisierung der Gewasserhuminstoffe und ihrer Reaktionsfahigkeit sind daher Summen- und Gruppenparameter besonders wichtig. Eine Isolierung aus Gewassern ist fur die Aussagekraft der Werte und ihre Reproduzierbarkeit wesentlich. Die Wechselwirkung mit Metallen last sich unter definierten Reaktionsbedingungen bestimmen und durch gezielte Modellversuche uberprufen. Unter Komplexierungskapazitat (CC) ist hierbei die nach einem bestimmten Verfahren ermittelte maximale Metallbindung je Huminstoffeinheit zu verstehen. Die auf Kupfer bezogene CC wird durch Titration einer vorgelegten Cu(II)Menge (10 μmol/l) mit einer Huminstofflosung bekannter DOC-Konzentration bei einem pH-Wert von 6,8 bestimmt. Die differentielle Pulspolarographie mit einer tropfenden Quecksilberelektrode wird als Detektor verwendet. Die Ergebnisse (2 bis 7 μmol pro mg DOC) lassen fur die Komplexbildung neben stickstoffhaltigen Gruppen eine Beteiligung sauerstoffhaltiger Gruppierungen vermuten. Das auch bei einem pH-Wert von 2,2 noch fest in den HUS gebundene Eisen zeigt eine gewisse Ahnlichkeit mit dem in Hydroxamsaurekomplexen gebundenen Fe(III). Die koordinative Bindung von Hg(II) and Thiogruppen der HUS kann mit Hilfe photochemischer Abbaureaktionen mit Modell-Liganden und naturlichen Proben bewiesen werden. Die fur naturliche HUS bestimmten Komplexierungskapazitaten zeigen, das in Gewassern meist mit einem Uberschus organischer Ligandfunktionen gegenuber den gelosten Schwermetallen zu rechnen ist. Komplexierungskapazitaten sollten jedoch nur im Zusammenhang mit der angewandten Bestimmungsmethode und dem jeweiligen Bezugsmetall betrachtet werden.

Humic substances (HUS) are the predominant part of organic carbon (DOC) dissolved in unpolluted water (Sontheimer and Gimbel, 1977). From their general structures their abilities for heavy metal complexation can be derived. This property is of considerable practical interest, for complexation may affect the transport of metals in aquatic systems and through treatment plants. It may also affect biological uptake and the toxicity of metals, especially in freshwater systems (Stevens, 1982; Christman and Gjessing, 1983). Therefore quantitative methods for the characterization of heavy metal complexation in aquatic systems are needed.

Group discussions were limited to metals and certain metalloids, except that N, P, and S were considered in the broader topic of biogeochemical cycles. In many instances, the statements concerning metals are also applicable to many, or even most, other elements. However, our discussions were focused on the metals and metalloids because of their major importance as environmental pollutants.

An ad hoc group of analytical chemists met independently to discuss what we could specifically contribute to solving the major measurement problems of determining the concentration of chemical species in the environment, upon which identification of causal agents, conclusions, solutions, and theoretical models are based. To solve these complex measurement problems, it is imperative that investigations be carried out with a rigorous analytical strategy and with the total measurement capability available.

Die Giftigkeit von Quecksilber und seinen Verbindungen ist durch klassische Beispiele belegt [1, 2]. Unsere Kenntnisse deuten darauf hin, das kleine und kleinste Mengen uber langere Zeit fur den menschlichen Organismus schadlich sind. Als mogliche Quecksilbertrager kommen neben der Luft Lebensmittel, und hier besonders das Trinkwasser in Frage. Die Notwendigkeit einer moglichst exakten analytischen Erfassung des Quecksilbers und seiner Verbindungen im hydrologischen Kreislauf steht auser Zweifel [3].

An extraction technique using MTBE (methyl tert. butyl ether) and reagent water in combination with ion chromatography and conductivity determination was developed to quantify dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) concentrations in raw water after chlorination. The detection limit of the method was 0.45 and 1.50 microg/L for DCAA and TCAA, respectively. Mean values of recovery ranged from 90 to 96% for DCAA and 95 to 108% for TCAA. The evaluation of recovery and precision of the method indicates that the performance characteristics are comparable with gas chromatographic (GC) methods reported in literature. In addition, the procedure is simple, fast, and does not need any derivatization step. Application of the analytical method to the determination of DCAA and TCAA in real samples is shown.

The polymetic thionitrosyl metals formulated previously as M(N4S4)(M = Fe or Co), have been reinvestigated and new iron and cobalt carbonyl thionitrosyl complexes, Fe(CO)N4S4 and Co2(CO)N4S4 containing some of the highest ν(C–O) frequencies observed in transition metal carbonyls have been prepared.
