Con el desarrollo del conocimiento científico-tecnológico del último siglo, se lograron determinar sus propiedades físico-químicas que les brindan dicha versatilidad. Las principales propiedades de las arcillas, en particular de las montmorillonitas, son su gran superficie específica y su capacidad de intercambio catiónico que las postulan como buenos adsorbentes de especies catiónicas. Con el objetivo de mejorar su capacidad de adsorción de moléculas orgánicas neutras o aniónicas, se propone la modificación química mediante reacciones de intercambio catiónico con sales de alquilamonio, para generar nuevos sitios de adsorción y cambios en su hidrofilicidad/hidrofobicidad. La diversidad de suelos y climas que ofrece el territorio nacional, permite la existencia de una producción muy variada de frutas entre las cuales se encuentra la de frutas de pepita en la Patagonia. En esta industria, se generan grandes volúmenes de efluentes conteniendo mezclas de fungicidas y detergentes, debido a los tratamientos post-cosecha a los cuales son sometidas las frutas. Esto genera una fuente puntual de contaminación, donde es posible la remoción de los contaminantes, previa disposición de los efluentes. Debido a la sencillez del proceso de adsorción y a la abundancia y bajo costo de las montmorillonitas en la Argentina, se plantea la hipótesis de utilización de montmorillonitas y sus productos de modificación química con sales de alquilamonio, para obtener las denominadas nano-montmorillonitas u organo-montmorillonitas, para el tratamiento de efluentes agrícolas. El objetivo de esta tesis es obtener diferentes organo-montmorillonitas y evaluar su capacidad de adsorción de tres fungicidas (fludioxonil, pirimetanil y metil-tiofanato) presentes en efluentes generados en el tratamiento post-cosecha de peras y manzanas, aportando conocimiento científico que permitan evaluar su aplicación tecnológica. En la primera parte de esta tesis se estudiarán diversas variables (tiempo, temperatura, efecto del solvente, del lavado, del ultrasonido, etc.) en la síntesis de organo-montmorillonitas a partir de una montmorillonita nacional y diferentes sales de alquilamonio (capítulo 2). Luego, estas organo-montmorillonitas obtenidas se utilizarán como adsorbentes de tres fungicidas (fludioxonil, pirimetanil y metil-tiofanato) comparando sus capacidades de adsorción con la montmorillonita natural (Capítulos 3, 4 y 5). Se caracterizarán los materiales antes y después de la adsorción con diferentes técnicas de caracterización (DRX, potencial zeta, diámetro aparente de partículas, ATD-TG y espectroscopía IR). En el capítulo 6, se estudiará la adsorción de mezclas de dos fungicidas (pirimetanil y metil-tiofanato) y se evaluará el efecto de los coadyuvantes, presentes en los formulados comerciales, en la adsorción de los principios activos. Además, se realizarán ensayos de floculación de los productos de adsorción así como también se estudiará la filtración en columna comparando la adsorción de metil-tiofanato por las organo-montmorillonitas con un carbón activado. Finalmente, se realizará un estudio preliminar de la disposición de los residuos sólidos generados luego del proceso de filtración en columna antes mencionado.

Heat extraction and drop impact regimes occurring when a local portion of a horizontal flat-fan air mist impinges the active surface of a Pt disk hold at Tw from ∼60 to 1200 °C are investigated. Boiling curves comprise single-phase, nucleate boiling (NB), transition boiling (TB), and film boiling (FB). Mists are generated under wide ranges of water and air flow rates, and the disk is placed at center and off-center positions along the mist footprint major axis. Conditions generate a wide spectrum of water impact flux, w, droplet diameter, dd, droplet velocity, uzs, and impingement angle. Heat flux extracted, −q, along each boiling regime correlates very well with expressions involving Reynolds, Weber, and Jakob numbers evaluated in terms of local average characteristics of free nonimpinging mists—w, volume mean diameter, d30, normal volume weighted mean velocity, uz,v—and Tw; close estimation indicates that hydrodynamic and thermal forces are well accounted. During arrival of sparse parcels visualization of mist–wall interactions, using a high speed camera aided by laser illumination, allows determination of the predominance area diagram of droplet impact regimes in terms of normal impinging Weber number, Wez, and Tw. The regimes include stick, rebound, spread, and splash; the last subclassified as fine-, crown- and jet-atomization. Arrival of parcels in close succession is ubiquitous causing rapid surface flooding and leading to formation of discontinuous well agitated thick liquid films, which interacts longer with the surface than drops in sparse parcels, acting as heat sinks for longer periods of time.

BACKGROUND: Empagliflozin slowed the progression of CKD in patients with type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the EMPA-REG OUTCOME Trial. In a prespecified statistical approach, we assessed treatment differences in kidney function by analyzing slopes of eGFR changes.METHODS: Participants (n=7020) were randomized (1:1:1) to empagliflozin 10 mg/d, empagliflozin 25 mg/d, or placebo added to standard of care. We calculated eGFR slopes using random-intercept/random-coefficient models for prespecified study periods: treatment initiation (baseline to week 4), chronic maintenance treatment (week 4 to last value on treatment), and post-treatment (last value on treatment to follow-up).RESULTS: Compared with placebo, empagliflozin was associated with uniform shifts in individual eGFR slopes across all periods. On treatment initiation, adjusted mean slope (eGFR change per week, ml/min per 1.73 m2) decreased with empagliflozin (-0.77; 95% confidence interval, -0.83 to -0.71; placebo: 0.01; 95% confidence interval, -0.08 to 0.10; PCONCLUSIONS: The hemodynamic effects of empagliflozin, associated with reduction in intraglomerular pressure, may contribute to long-term preservation of kidney function.

El objetivo principal del presente informe es mostrar las mejoras en la performance del código Stampack, cuando se lo emplea en conjunto con OpenMP en máquinas del tipo multi-núcleo (ej.: Intel Core2 Duo, Intel Core2 Quad, etc) o multi-thread (ej.: Intel Core i3, i5, i7, etc). Esta última tecnología en los procesadores (multi-thread) permite aumentar de manera importante la potencia de cálculo, dado que además de contar con más de un procesador, permite aumentar los hilos (threads) de tareas simultaneas de cada núcleo. Por ejemplo un procesador Intel Core i3, puede tener dos procesadores y realizar dos tareas simultaneas por cada procesador, lo cual es equivalente a tener una máquina con cuatro procesadores. En el caso del procesador Intel Core i7 empleado en este trabajo cuenta con cuatro núcleos y la posibilidad de realizar dos tareas simultaneas por núcleo, lo cual equivale a tener ocho procesadores. La paralelización del software Stampack se ha realizado siguiendo la idea básica de modificar o intervenir mínimamente los archivos fuente originales de la versión serial. Bajo estas condiciones, se ha realizado un análisis de tiempos para detectar zonas del código que representen un importante porcentaje del tiempo total de cálculo. Para finalizar se debe destacar que el software paralelizado debe funcionar también de manera correcta cuando es ejecutado en ordenadores con un solo procesador, de manera que la versión paralela debe ser compatible en su totalidad con la versión serial original del código Stampack.

Rationale and objectiveSensitive detection of bone mineral density (BMD) change is a key issue to monitor and evaluate the individual bone health status, as well as bone metabolism and bone mineral status. The ability to use thoracic quantitative computed tomography (QCT) to detect the annual change of BMD remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the sensitivity in detecting age-related bone mineral loss using the thoracic QCT from the electrocardiographically gated heart scans in comparison to whole-body dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and standard lumbar QCT.Materials and methodsA total of 121 asymptomatic patients' imaging data, including DXA whole body scan, cardiac CT scan, and abdomen scans were analyzed. The BMD of the thoracolumbar spine, upper, and lower extremities were measured using QCT and DXA, respectively. The age-related annual rate of bone density loss was computed and compared to the thoracic and lumbar QCT, as well DXA measures.ResultsThe age-related annual rate of bone loss with QCT was -0.70 mg/mL3 (-0.75%/y) in women, -0.83 mg/mL3 (-0.86%/y) in men in the thoracic and the lumbar trabecular QCT, respectively. Comunicación oral presentada en la XVI International Clay Conference from the Oceans to Space 16th ICC – July, 17-21,Granada 2017, In the post-harvest treatment of pears and apples in the Argentinean Patagonia, several pesticides are used [1], including pyrimethanil (PRM), for the storage of fruits. The effluents released by the packing plants originate point source of contamination that should be treated prior to its discharge to natural water-courses. Montmorillonites (Mt) and their exchange products with quaternary ammonium salts, organo-montmorillonites (OrMt), have been used to remove this kind of contaminant [2] as well as metals [3], antibiotics [4], etc. The objective of this work was to study the adsorption of pyrimethanil on Mt and OrMt as well as the adsorption kinetics that manages the process. The adsorption isotherms were fitted to Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevitch (D-R) models. For kinetic analysis, three mathematical models were employed: pseudo first order (PFO), pseudo second order (PSO) and intra-particle diffusion model (IDM). The adsorption products were characterized by XRD and FTIR. The OrMt were prepared from didodecyldimethylammonium (DDAB) and octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) bromides at 150% of the cation exchange capacity (CEC). These adsorbents were named DMt150 and OMt149 for DDAB and ODTMA exchanged raw montmorillonite (Mt), respectively, where the number indicated the surfactant amount exchanged determined by total carbon analysis. The maximum adsorption of PRM was the following: 330, 240 and 156 μmol PRM/g clay, for DMt150, OMt149 and Mt, respectively. The large amount adsorbed by DMt150 sample was assigned to different conformational states of DDAB in the interlayer space [5], due to the presence of two hydrocarbon chains, allowing the entrance of PRM to the interlayer, and conferring greater hydrophobicity than that of OMt149. All adsorbents fitted well to the sorption models, except OMt149 sample that did not fit to Langmuir. The DMt150 sample attained the highest KF value (obtained from the Freundlich model) within the studied samples. The high PRM affinity for DMt150 sample indicated the presence of hydrophobic interactions between the PRM and the organic fraction of the OrMt. The Qmax parameter obtained with D-R model were higher than that obtained with Langmuir model for all samples. The adsorption energy values found by D-R model indicated a physisorption process for PRM adsorption on OrMt samples, supporting the hypothesis of hydrophobic or Van der Waals type interactions. The kinetics experiments indicated that the adsorption process was governed by pseudo-second order kinetics. The XRD analysis indicated an increase of the basal spacing from 1.25 to 1.39 nm for Mt sample after PRM adsorption, assigned to PRM molecules arrangement in a planar conformation. For OrMt, no changes were noticed in the interlayer space after PRM adsorption, which could indicated a shielding of PRM entrance by the presence of the surfactant. FTIR analysis showed that the secondary amino group of PRM was involved in the adsorption process. The appearance of a new band in the Mt-PRM spectra at 1579 cm-1 could indicate the formation of H-bonding through one of the pyrimidine ring nitrogen.
