- Abstract
Information on the active and resistive zones involved in the oxygen reduction reaction at SOFC cathodes is often deduced indirectly, for example from interpretations of impedance spectra or from geometry dependent polarization resistance measurements. A more direct means for obtaining information on the decisive zones is voltage driven tracer incorporation and subsequent spatially resolved analysis of tracer concentrations by secondary ion mass spectrometry. In this contribution it is first discussed under which conditions quantitative data on the width of three phase boundaries (TPB) can be determined. The calculations are then exemplified by measurements on the TPB width of Pt electrodes on YSZ. Moreover, it is shown for Sr-doped LaCoO3-δ cathodes that also resistive regions of oxygen reduction can be visualized by voltage driven tracer studies.
