© ESO, 2016.Recent models for the large-scale Galactic magnetic fields in the literature have been largely constrained by synchrotron emission and Faraday rotation measures. We use three different but representative models to compare their predicted polarized synchrotron and dust emission with that measured by the Planck satellite. We first update these models to match the Planck synchrotron products using a common model for the cosmic-ray leptons. We discuss the impact on this analysis of the ongoing problems of component separation in the Planck microwave bands and of the uncertain cosmic-ray spectrum. In particular, the inferred degree of ordering in the magnetic fields is sensitive to these systematic uncertainties, and we further show the importance of considering the expected variations in the observables in addition to their mean morphology. We then compare the resulting simulated emission to the observed dust polarization and find that the dust predictions do not match the morphology in the Planck data but underpredict the dust polarization away from the plane. We modify one of the models to roughly match both observables at high latitudes by increasing the field ordering in the thin disc near the observer. Though this specific analysis is dependent on the component separation issues, we present the improved model as a proof of concept for how these studies can be advanced in future using complementary information from ongoing and planned observational projects.

© ESO, 2016.Within ten nearby (d < 450 pc) Gould belt molecular clouds we evaluate statistically the relative orientation between the magnetic field projected on the plane of sky, inferred from the polarized thermal emission of Galactic dust observed by Planck at 353 GHz, and the gas column density structures, quantified by the gradient of the column density, NH. The selected regions, covering several degrees in size, are analysed at an effective angular resolution of 10′ FWHM, thus sampling physical scales from 0.4 to 40 pc in the nearest cloud. The column densities in the selected regions range from NH ≈ 1021 to 1023 cm-2, and hence they correspond to the bulk of the molecular clouds. The relative orientation is evaluated pixel by pixel and analysed in bins of column density using the novel statistical tool called "histogram of relative orientations". Throughout this study, we assume that the polarized emission observed by Planck at 353 GHz is representative of the projected morphology of the magnetic field in each region, i.e., we assume a constant dust grain alignment efficiency, independent of the local environment. Within most clouds we find that the relative orientation changes progressively with increasing NH, from mostly parallel or having no preferred orientation to mostly perpendicular. In simulations of magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in molecular clouds this trend in relative orientation is a signature of Alfvénic or sub-Alfvénic turbulence, implying that the magnetic field is significant for the gas dynamics at the scales probed by Planck. We compare the deduced magnetic field strength with estimates we obtain from other methods and discuss the implications of the Planck observations for the general picture of molecular cloud formation and evolution.

Abstract

The polarization properties of radio sources at very low frequencies (<200 MHz) have not been widely measured, but the new generation of low-frequency radio telescopes, including the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR: a Square Kilometre Array Low pathfinder), now gives us the opportunity to investigate these properties. In this paper, we report on the preliminary development of a data reduction pipeline to carry out polarization processing and Faraday tomography for data from the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey (LOTSS) and present the results of this pipeline from the LOTSS preliminary data release region (10h45m–15h30m right ascension, 45°–57° declination, 570 square degrees). We have produced a catalog of 92 polarized radio sources at 150 MHz at 4.′3 resolution and 1 mJy rms sensitivity, which is the largest catalog of polarized sources at such low frequencies. We estimate a lower limit to the polarized source surface density at 150 MHz, with our resolution and sensitivity, of 1 source per 6.2 square degrees. We find that our Faraday depth measurements are in agreement with previous measurements and have significantly smaller errors. Most of our sources show significant depolarization compared to 1.4 GHz, but there is a small population of sources with low depolarization indicating that their polarized emission is highly localized in Faraday depth. We predict that an extension of this work to the full LOTSS data would detect at least 3400 polarized sources using the same methods, and probably considerably more with improved data processing.

Abstract

Recent models for the large-scale Galactic magnetic fields in the literature have been largely constrained by synchrotron emission and Faraday rotation measures. We use three different but representative models to compare their predicted polarized synchrotron and dust emission with that measured by the Planck satellite. We first update these models to match the Planck synchrotron products using a common model for the cosmic-ray leptons. We discuss the impact on this analysis of the ongoing problems of component separation in the Planck microwave bands and of the uncertain cosmic-ray spectrum. In particular, the inferred degree of ordering in the magnetic fields is sensitive to these systematic uncertainties, and we further show the importance of considering the expected variations in the observables in addition to their mean morphology. We then compare the resulting simulated emission to the observed dust polarization and find that the dust predictions do not match the morphology in the Planck data but underpredict the dust polarization away from the plane. We modify one of the models to roughly match both observables at high latitudes by increasing the field ordering in the thin disc near the observer. Though this specific analysis is dependent on the component separation issues, we present the improved model as a proof of concept for how these studies can be advanced in future using complementary information from ongoing and planned observational projects., Comment: 31 pages, 16 figures, updated to match accepted A&A version

Abstract

et al., Polarized emission observed by Planck HFI at 353 GHz towards a sample of nearby fields is presented, focusing on the statistics of polarization fractions p and angles ψ. The polarization fractions and column densities in these nearby fields are representative of the range of values obtained over the whole sky. We find that: (i) the largest polarization fractions are reached in the most diffuse fields; (ii) the maximum polarization fraction pmax decreases with column density NH in the more opaque fields with NH> 1021 cm-2; and (iii) the polarization fraction along a given line of sight is correlated with the local spatial coherence of the polarization angle. These observations are compared to polarized emission maps computed in simulations of anisotropic magnetohydrodynamical turbulence in which we assume a uniform intrinsic polarization fraction of the dust grains. We find that an estimate of this parameter may be recovered from the maximum polarization fraction pmax in diffuse regions where the magnetic field is ordered on large scales and perpendicular to the line of sight. This emphasizes the impact of anisotropies of the magnetic field on the emerging polarization signal. The decrease of the maximum polarization fraction with column density in nearby molecular clouds is well reproduced in the simulations, indicating that it is essentially due to the turbulent structure of the magnetic field: an accumulation of variously polarized structures along the line of sight leads to such an anti-correlation. In the simulations, polarization fractions are also found to anti-correlate with the angle dispersion function . However, the dispersion of the polarization angle for a given polarization fraction is found to be larger in the simulations than in the observations, suggesting a shortcoming in the physical content of these numerical models. Abstract

Interstellar and circumstellar matter.-- et al., The role of the magnetic field in the formation of the filamentary structures observed in the interstellar medium (ISM) is a debated topic owing to the paucity of relevant observations needed to test existing models. The Planck all-sky maps of linearly polarized emission from dust at 353 GHz provide the required combination of imaging and statistics to study the correlation between the structures of the Galactic magnetic field and of interstellar matter over the whole sky, both in the diffuse ISM and in molecular clouds. The data reveal that structures, or ridges, in the intensity map have counterparts in the Stokes Q and/or U maps. We focus our study on structures at intermediate and high Galactic latitudes, which cover two orders of magnitude in column density, from 1020 to 1022 cm-2. We measure the magnetic field orientation on the plane ofthe sky from the polarization data, and present an algorithm to estimate the orientation of the ridges from the dust intensity map. We use analytical models to account for projection effects. Comparing polarization angles on and off the structures, we estimate the mean ratio between the strengths of the turbulent and mean components of the magnetic field to be between 0.6 and 1.0, with a preferred value of 0.8. We find that the ridges are usually aligned with the magnetic field measured on the structures. This statistical trend becomes more striking for increasing polarization fraction and decreasing column density. There is no alignment for the highest column density ridges. We interpret the increase in alignment with polarization fraction as a consequence of projection effects. We present maps to show that the decrease in alignment for high column density is not due to a loss of correlation between the distribution of matter and the geometry of the magnetic field. In molecular complexes, we also observe structures perpendicular to the magnetic field, which, statistically, cannot be accounted for by projection effects. This first statistical study of the relative orientation between the matter structures and the magnetic field in the ISM points out that, at the angular scales probed by Planck, the field geometry projected on the plane of the sky is correlated with the distribution of matter. In the diffuse ISM, the structures of matter are usually aligned with the magnetic field, while perpendicular structures appear in molecular clouds. Abstract

There are numerous indications for anticoagulant therapy. It has been suggested that such a therapy threatened bone health and could represent a risk factor for osteoporosis. After a careful review of the literature, it is difficult to conclude that anticoagulant treatment is a significant risk factor for fracture. In any case, a possible fracture risk has to be balanced against the indications for an anticoagulant treatment.

159. Bacteremic sepsis in intensive care: temporal trends in incidence, organ dysfunction, and prognosis.

Abstract

Objective: To determine whether changes have occurred at our center in the incidence, patterns of organ dysfunctions, prognostic factors, and case-fatality rate of bacteremic sepsis., Design: Retrospective comparative study (1984-1988 vs. 1994-1997)., Setting: University hospital surgical intensive care unit., Patients: A total of 372 critically ill patients with sepsis and positive blood cultures., Intervention: None., Measurements and Main Results: In the 1984-1988 study, 176 patients developed bacteremic sepsis (3.2 per 100 admissions), with a fatality rate of 35% at 28 days, whereas in the 1994-1997 study, 196 patients had bacteremic sepsis (4.3 per 100 admissions), with a 28-day fatality rate of 37%. The frequency of primary bacteremia increased from 21% to 47% (p <.001), paralleled by an increase in the proportional frequency of Gram-positive microorganisms. In 1984-1988, 69% (n = 120) of patients had at least one organ dysfunction, compared with 80% (n = 156) in 1994-1997 (p =.02). The prevalence of pulmonary and cardiac dysfunction increased. The case- fatality rate of septic shock remained high (69% vs. 68%). For both cohorts, the two strongest predictors of mortality remained the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II score at the onset of sepsis and the number of evolving organ dysfunctions., Conclusion: The fatality rate of bacteremic sepsis remained constant over the study period, despite an increased incidence of bacteremia and associated organ dysfunction. Continued efforts need to be directed toward the prevention of bacteremic sepsis, given the magnitude and poor prognosis of this syndrome.

Abstract

Hypothesis: A set of clinical variables available at the bedside can be used to predict outcome in critically ill patients with bloodstream infection (BSI)., Design: A 3-year retrospective cohort study., Setting: A surgical intensive care unit in Switzerland., Patients: All patients with BSI were potentially eligible., Main Outcome Measures: Clinical variables, organ dysfunctions, and outcome., Results: Among 4530 admissions to the surgical intensive care unit, 224 clinically significant episodes of BSI were recorded (incidence, 4.9%), with a 28-day fatality of 36%. A total of 110 patients had primary bacteremia, of which 39 (35%) were catheter related. Although gram-positive organisms were the most frequently isolated pathogens (58% [159/275]), they were associated with lower case-fatality (30%) than BSI due to gram-negative bacteria (44%). Organ dysfunctions associated with the highest risk of death were neurologic dysfunction (hazard ratio [HR], 6.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.3-14.5), hepatic dysfunction (HR, 3.9; 95% CI, 2.1-7.4), and disseminated intravascular coagulation (HR, 3.0; 95% CI, 1.5-6.1). By multivariate analysis, 2 independent predictors of mortality were the APACHE II (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II) score at onset of BSI (HR per 1-point increase, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.04-1.12) and the number of evolving organ dysfunctions (HR, 1.4; 95% CI, 1.2-1.7). Appropriate antimicrobial therapy was associated with improved outcome (HR, 0.4; 95% CI, 0.2-0.6)., Conclusions: Bloodstream infection in critically ill patients is a common and frequently fatal condition. Its outcome can be predicted by the severity of illness at onset of BSI and the number of organ dysfunctions evolving thereafter. Appropriate antimicrobial therapy is an important determinant for survival.
