Learning Classifier Systems (LCSs) are a kind of evolutionary machine learning algorithms that provide highly adaptive components to deal with real world problems. They have been widely used in resolving complex problems such as decision making and classification. LCSs are flexible algorithms that are able to construct, incrementally, a set of rules and evolve them through the Evolutionary Algorithm (EA). Despite their efficiency, LCSs are not capable of handling imperfect information, which may lead to reduced performance in terms of classification accuracy. We propose a new accuracy-based Michigan-style LCS that integrates the belief function theory in the supervised classifier system. The belief function or evidence theory represents an efficient framework for treating imperfect information. The new approach shows promising results in real world classification problems. Pediatric osteoporosis (PO) is a condition that is currently gaining recognition. Due to the lack of official definitions over the past few decades, the exact incidence of PO is unknown. The research does not provide a specific prevalence of PO in different world regions. However, this is expected to change with the latest 2019 guidelines proposed by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. Although adult osteoporosis (AO) has been postulated a pediatric disease because its manifestation in adulthood is a result of the bone mass acquired during childhood, differences between PO and AO should be acknowledged. AO is defined as low bone density; however, PO is diagnosed based on existing evidence of bone fragility (vertebral fractures, pathological fractures). This is particularly relevant because unlike in adults, evidence is lacking regarding the association between low bone density and fracture risk in children. The enhanced capacity of pediatric bone for reshaping and remodeling after fracture is another difference between the two entities. This contrast has therapeutic implications because medication-free bone reconstitution is possible under certain conditions; thus, background therapy is not always recommended. Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease with a complex aetiology characterised by abnormal immune responses and oxidative stress–induced tissue injury. Inflammatory cells play an important role in the progression of this pathology through the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from various sources including the NADPH oxidases (NOXs). The aim of this study was to investigate the preventive effect of apocynin, a natural antioxidant molecule and a selective inhibitor of NOXs, on acetic acid (AA)-induced ulcerative colitis in rats. Our results first confirmed that apocynin has a high free radical scavenging capacity as well as a potent iron chelating ability. Oral pretreatment of rats with apocynin (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) for 7 days prior to AA-induced colitis suppressed the increase in pro-oxidant markers in colonic homogenates and preserved colonic cytoarchitecture from acetic acid–induced damage. Oral administration of apocynin (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) also reduced several systemic inflammatory markers such as alkaline phosphatase, iron, pro-inflammatory cytokines, C-reactive protein and myeloperoxidase. This study shows that apocynin protects rats from acetic acid–induced colonic inflammation and suggests that apocynin may have a promising beneficial effect in the prevention of ulcerative colitis. Background: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a chronic rheumatic disease that affects children. It is crucial to detect and treat hip involvement in JIA early to prevent functional impairment and reduced quality of life. The Childhood Arthritis Radiographic Score of the Hip (CARSH) is a validated radiographic scoring system used to assess hip involvement in JIA. In this study, we aimed to determine cut-off values for CARSH scores using cluster analysis. Methods: The study was conducted as a cross-sectional analysis and included JIA patients with hip involvement who underwent a pelvic radiograph. The same pelvic radiograph was interpreted by two experienced pediatric rheumatologists at baseline and after 3 weeks by both readers for reliability. The CARSH scores were calculated for each hip four times (twice by each reader). For the 50 hips, a total of 200 interpretations of the CARSH score were obtained. Model-based clustering was employed to identify distinct groups of CARSH score interpretations and characterize the phenotype of each cluster. Results: Twenty-five children with hip involvement were included. The mean age was 13.9 ± 4.6 years. JIA subtypes were as follows: ERA in 64%, oligoarthritis in 16%, psoriatic arthritis in 12%, polyarthritis RF + in 4%, and RF − in 4% of patients. For the 200 hip interpretations, three clusters based on the level of the CARSH were identified by model-based clustering. Cluster 1 consisted of 17 CARSH score interpretations with a median score of 7 ± 3 (ranging from 1 to 15). This group primarily comprised patients with enthesitis-related arthritis (ERA) and psoriatic arthritis. Patients in cluster 1 were generally older, experienced longer diagnostic delays, and had a longer disease duration compared to the other clusters. Cluster 2 exhibited a moderate CARSH score, with an average score of 4 ± 3 (1 to 15). Patients in this group had significantly higher body weight compared to the other clusters. Cluster 3 represented the group with the least severe hip involvement, characterized by CARSH scores of 2 ± 1 (ranging from 0 to 9). This cluster had a higher proportion of male patients and higher C-reactive protein (CRP) levels than the other clusters. Regarding the individual items of the CARSH score, cluster 1 showed higher percentages of hip radiograph abnormalities such as joint space narrowing, erosions, growth abnormalities, and subchondral cysts. Cluster 2 was characterized by a high rate of acetabular sclerosis, with little to no abnormalities in other CARSH score items. Cluster 3 was the only group that exhibited hip subluxation, with minimal abnormalities in the other score items. In conclusion, this study identified three distinct groups of CARSH scores, representing varying levels of severity in hip involvement in JIA. These findings provide valuable insights for clinicians in assessing and managing JIA patients with hip involvement, enabling tailored treatment strategies based on the severity of the condition. Blau syndrome is a rare genetic granulomatosis affecting children. It could be responsible for vision-threatening complications and articular deformation. Due to the rarity of this disease, there are no standardized guidelines for its management. This work aimed to provide an updated overview of the different therapeutic options for Blau syndrome. We conducted research in the PubMed database for the different treatments used in Blau syndrome patients, and we proposed a therapeutic algorithm for disease management. High doses of corticosteroids are considered as a bridging therapy in Blau syndrome. Methotrexate should be initiated if the patient has articular or ocular involvement. An anti-tumor necrosis factor α should be added for patients with uveitis or residual arthritis. If the patient remains symptomatic, a switch to another anti-tumor necrosis factor α is the best option. In non-responders to the first- and second-line biotherapies, a switch to an anti-interleukin 1, an anti-interleukin 6, or tofacitinib is necessary. Conclusion: This article suggested an algorithm for the treatment of Blau syndrome. Other studies are necessary to confirm the efficacy of these treatments. What is Known: • Blau syndrome is a rare but severe granulomatosis that could be responsible for vision-threatening complications and articular deformation. • Blau syndrome seems to be refractory to treatments. The bacterial genus Pantoea has been widely evaluated as promising bacteria to increase phosphorus (P) availability in soil. The aim of this study was to characterize the phosphate solubilizing (PS) activity of a Pantoea agglomerans strain and to evaluate the impact of its application in a semi-arid soil on phosphate availability and structure of the bacterial communities as a whole. An incubation experiment under close-to-natural soil environmental conditions was conducted for 15 days at 30 °C. High-throughput sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene was used to characterize and to compare the bacterial community structure of P. agglomerans-inoculated soil with non-inoculated control. Furthermore, a qPCR-based method was developed for detection and quantification of the functional genes related to the expression of mineral phosphate solubilization (MPS) phenotype in P. agglomerans. The results showed that in vitro solubilization of Ca3(PO4)2 by P. agglomerans strain was very efficient (980 mg/L), and it was associated with a drop in pH due to the secretion of gluconic acid; these changes were concomitant with the detection of gdh and pqqC genes. Moreover, P. agglomerans inoculum application significantly increased the content of available P in semi-arid soil by 69%. Metagenomic analyses showed that P. agglomerans treatment modified the overall edaphic bacterial community, significantly impacting its structure and composition. In particular, during P. agglomerans inoculation the relative abundance of bacteria belonging to Firmicutes (mainly Bacilli class) significantly increased, whereas the abundance of Actinobacteria together with Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi phyla decreased. Furthermore, genera known for their phosphate solubilizing activity, such as Aneurinibacillus, Lysinibacillus, Enterococcus, and Pontibacter, were exclusively detected in P. agglomerans-treated soil. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed that changes in soil bacterial community composition were closely affected by soil characteristics, such as pH and available P. This study explores the effect of the inoculation of P. agglomerans on the bacterial community structure of a semi-arid soil. The effectiveness in improving the phosphate availability and modification in soil bacterial community suggested that P. agglomerans represent a promising environmental-friendly biofertilizer in arid and semi-arid ecosystems.

Introduction: Pulmonary vein thrombosis is a potentially fatal disease. The association between pulmonary vein thrombosis and chronic heart failure has not been described in the literature. Case report: Herein, we report a case involving a 73-year-old woman, with a medical history of ischemic congestive heart failure, who was hospitalised for acute decompensated heart failure with respiratory distress. A computed tomography pulmonary angiography was performed to rule out the possibility of pulmonary embolism, and it showed evidence of pulmonary vein thrombosis. No cause was determined for the pulmonary vein thrombosis; hence, it was considered idiopathic and anticoagulation therapy was initiated for the patient. However, the patient died a few days after admission to the intensive care unit. Conclusion: This case of pulmonary vein thrombosis is presented to promote awareness of this disease entity. We also want to emphasize the importance of maintaining a high index of clinical suspicion for this diagnosis, particularly in patients with acute decompensated heart failure who are refractory to standard therapy.

Toxicity of organic chemical compounds, including benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene and xylene (BTEX), is a major concern because of their induction of adverse effects in organisms, including reproductive abnormalities. In the present study, we investigated impacts of chronic exposure to BTEX at 25 µg L−1 on the ovaries of the freshwater leech Erpobdella johanssoni at the cytological and molecular level. Based on light and transmission electron microscopy, we found that somatic cells and vitellogenic oocytes of the treated animals underwent degenerative changes, such as cytoplasmic vacuolization, mitochondrial alterations, and nuclear DNA condensation, as compared with normal. Cystinosis is an autosomal recessive, lysosomal storage disease characterised by the accumulation of the amino acid cystine in different organs and tissues. It is a multisystemic disease that can present with renal and extra-renal manifestations. In this report, we present the first case of transplanted nephropathic cystinosis in a Tunisian child. A 4-year-old Tunisian boy born to nonconsanguineous parents, was treated in our medical services in 1990 for cystinosis. Since the age of five months, he developed symptoms of severe weight loss, vomiting, dehydration, and polyuria. He manifested the Toni Debré Fanconi syndrome. Slit lamp examination of the anterior segment of both eyes revealed fine, shiny crystal-like deposits diffusely distributed in the corneal epithelium and the stroma. Our patient had renal failure. At the age of seven, he reached terminal chronic renal failure and was treated with peritoneal dialysis. Hemodialysis was started at the age of nine years. At the age of 13 years, he received a renal transplantation and was started on cysteamine 1999, five months after the renal transplantation. Currently, the patient is 28-year-old. The graft has survived 15 years after the transplantation. Renal functions were stable with a serum creatinine of 123 μmol/L at last follow-up.
