Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)‐grown ternary Ga1−xAlxAs films, with Al composition xranging from 0 to 1 in steps of 0.1, have been studied by Raman scattering at room temperature and at 80 K. The observed broadening and asymmetry of the first‐order longitudinal‐optical phonon spectra induced by alloy disorder are simulated using the spatial correlation model. The obtained correlation length for GaAs‐like and AlAs‐like modes are observed to decrease as the reduction of Ga composition 1−xand Al composition x, respectively. It is also shown that the correlation length depends sensitively on the composition. No significant temperature or phonon mode dependence is found. A combination with thermodynamic analysis suggests that the random compositional distribution in alloy seems to be the dominant contribution to this disorder effect. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome is a rare but devastating completion. We report a patient with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia in whom heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome developed after a cardiac operation, complicated by acute thrombosis of the aorta followed by renal failure, paralysis, and ischemic necrosis of the lower extremities. The literature suggests aspirin, dipyridamoie, and iloprost as effective prophylactic agents for perioperative heparin-induced thrombocytopenia and thrombosis syndrome. This unfortunate complication underscores the importance of close platelet count monitoring in all preoperative patients undergoing prolonged heparin therapy.

Waveguide TE and TM modes in a GaN:Mg epitaxial crystalline film were studied in a wide spectral range (457.9–1053 nm). The refractive indices ne and no were accurately determined by TM and TE mode measurements at six different wavelengths (457.9, 514.5, 632.8, 724.3, 855.1, and 1053 nm). Dispersive curves of ne versus λ and no versus λ were obtained. It was found that bireferingence slightly increases (ne − no = 0.033–0.038) from 1053 to 457.9 nm.

• An outbreak of 30 cases of Kawasaki syndrome (KS) occurred in Maryland from January through May 1983. The mean age of patients was 27 months; 60% were male. Rug shampoo exposure within one month and within six months of illness was not significantly greater in the 30 epidemic and seven sporadic cases than in their neighborhood and pediatric controls. These findings suggest that rug shampoo exposure may not be an important risk factor in the outbreak of KS in Maryland.(AJDC 1985;139:277-279)

Different ternary transition-metal-silicon alloys have been investigated in a search for quasicrystal formation. In some of these alloys a complex three-dimensional modulated structure related to quasicrystals has been discovered. The underlying basic structure is cubic with a modulation along all six 〈110〉* directions. The wavevectors are, however, generally slightly variable along different 〈1l0〉* directions destroying the cubic symmetry.

Single crystal Cd1−xMnxTe (x=0.10–0.30) films have been grown by metalorganic vapor deposition (MOCVD) on (111) GaAs substrates with and without CdTe buffer layers, at substrate temperatures of 380° to 450° C. Infrared phonon spectra reveal that the films grown at 420° C substrate temperature have reasonable Mn concentration (>10%) and are of good quality in agreement with Raman measurements. Spectral analysis also gives values for Mn concentration that agrees with photoluminescence measurements, and determines film thickness.

Antisera produced in guinea pigs inoculated with Rickettsia rickettsii or Rickettsia montana were cross-reactive but sufficiently specific to identify the primary infecting agent. Guinea pigs immunized with R. montana were protected from fatal infection with R. rickettsii, although a few (25%) developed mild fever of short duration.

Multi-camera calibration plays an important role in many field. In the paper, we present a novel multi-camera calibration method based on flat refractive geometry. All cameras can acquire calibration images of transparent glass calibration board (TGCB) at the same time. The application of TGCB leads to refractive phenomenon which can generate calibration error. The theory of flat refractive geometry is employed to eliminate the error. The new method can solve the refractive phenomenon of TGCB. Moreover, the bundle adjustment method is used to minimize the reprojection error and obtain optimized calibration results. Finally, the four-cameras calibration results of real data show that the mean value and standard deviation of the reprojection error of our method are 4.3411e-05 and 0.4553 pixel, respectively. The experimental results show that the proposed method is accurate and reliable.

The use of FRP in industry results in large amount of waste FRP. If not treated properly, it will pollute the environment. In our study, waste FRP powder was used in mortar to substitute part of sand in mortar. The use of short waste FRP fibre can further increase the mechanical strength. The Waste FRP fibre reinforced adhesive mortar was prepared with the material proportioning: cement-sand ratio 1:2, polymer 8% (cement based ), waste FRP fibre 3% (based on the total solids ). The performance of the mortar conforms to JCT 547-2005 with excellent adhesive characteristics.

Commercial formulations of glyphosate were compared for surfactant leaf damage and glyphosate uptake. The formulations (Roundup™ Ultra, Roundup™, and Touchdown™ were diluted with water to 12.5 g AI litre⁻¹ and applied as 1-μl drops to the first leaf adaxial surface. Tissues at application sites were examined by light, fluorescence and scanning electron microscopy. At 24 h after treatment, tissue necrosis was clearly visible with Ultra and Roundup^™, but not with Touchdown™. The application sites of Ultra and Roundup™, but not with Touchdown™. The application sites of Ultra and Roundup™ demonstrated a well-demarcated zone of injury showing extensive rupturing of cell membranes in both epidermal and mesophyll cells. Studies using blank formulations without glyphosate confirmed that tissue damage was caused by the surfactant formulants. Diluted formulations (12.5 g AI litre⁻¹) spiked with a minimum of [¹⁴C-glyphosate were applied similarly. Time-course studies showed the fastest uptake with Ultra, followed by Roundup™ and Touchdown™. Mobilization of glyphosate away from the treated leaf was proportional to uptake. The use of a deuterium NMR method demonstrated that pretreatment of leaves with glyphosate formulations facilitated subsequent leaf loading of deuterium oxide. The extent of the latter correlated with leaf loading of glyphosate in formulations. These results indicate that the role of the surfactant is to overcome the leaf cuticle and membrane barriers to facilitate glyphosate entry into the leaf. © 1999 Society of Chemical Industry

Polkowski's results add additional data to the growing evidence that a first-voided urine (FVU) sample is at least as sensitive as a urethral swab for culturing gonococci from men with urethritis.The author's observation that the FVU culture method is more acceptable to male patients than urethral-inserted swabs may be of considerable importance in increasing male participation in both screen testing and post-treatment tests of cure.The wide discrepancy Polkowski reported between the results of the Gram-stained smears and cultures of urethral discharge points up an important problem.Dans and Judson1 carried out a novel study testing the reliability of the Gram-stain smear relative to the experience of the smear reader. These authors had two technicians. Technician 1 was long experienced in reading Gram-stained smears of urethral discharge from men; technician 2 was well qualified in other areas of microbiology but had no prior experience in reading

THE VAST majority of gonococcal infections in men are localized in the uniquely accessible male urethra, where the disease usually manifests itself as an acute or chronic urethritis with recognizable symptoms and signs. The urethral site of these infections offers an unusually favorable opportunity for a simple method of collecting laboratory specimens, because the urethra can easily be washed out by the patient himself with a small amount of his own readily available urine.The report by Moore et al1 in 1973 is apparently the only major study in the past 20 years on the use of urine for diagnosis of gonorrhea in the male. Riggs,2 in a short letter to the editors of The Journal in 1975, recommended the use of a few drops of urine passed on a swab which is used as a culture sample. A set of AlGaN epilayers were grown on sapphire (0001) substrate by MOCVD, with intermediate growths of low/high temperature AlN nucleation layers. Variable flow rates of trimethylindium (TMIn), 0, 50 and 500 sccm were introduced during growth. Three AlGaN samples were originally designed with similar Al composition of ~20%. Rutherford backscattering (RBS), RT and 10-300K photoluminescence (PL) were used for analyzing the microstructure of thin films. The Al content was calculated to decrease with increasing the In-flow rate. Main PL bands spread over 310-350 nm with peaks in 320-335 nm. PL (10-300K) exhibited anomalous temperature dependent emission behavior (specifically an S-shaped shift, i.e. red-blue-red shifts) of the AlGaN related PL emission. Carriers transfer between different luminescent centers. Abnormally high activation energy was obtained, which shows that the excitons are not in the free states. Raman Scattering and spectral line shape analysis leaded to an optical determination of the electrical property free carrier concentration of AlGaN. Our results on In-doped AlGaN provide useful information for designing UV-LEDs.

The previously reported preparation of a naphthol derivative by protonation of the carbyne‐W complex (I) in the presence of 2‐butyne is extended to a variety of other alkynes such as (II).
