NMR spectroscopy using chiral liquid crystals as solvents is a powerful tool to visualize enantiomers. Using these oriented solvents, recent NMR studies with selective excitation have proven their effectiveness at simplifying enantiomeric visualization and enantiomeric excess determination through 1H or 13C spectra. In this review we present different straightforward and robust selective techniques dedicated to the spectral analysis of enantiomers dissolved in such chiral-oriented solvents.

Vascular plants are often considered to be among the better known large groups of organisms, but gaps in the available baseline data are extensive, and recent estimates of total known (described) seed plant species range from 200 000 to 422 000. Of these, global assessments of conservation status using International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categories and criteria are available for only approximately 10 000 species. In response to recommendations from the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to develop biodiversity indicators based on changes in the status of threatened species, and trends in the abundance and distribution of selected species, we examine how existing data, in combination with limited new data collection, can be used to maximum effect. We argue that future work should produce Red List Indices based on a representative subset of plant species so that the limited resources currently available are directed towards redressing taxonomic and geographical biases apparent in existing datasets. Sampling the data held in the world's major herbaria, in combination with Geographical Information Systems techniques, can produce preliminary conservation assessments and help to direct selective survey work using existing field networks to verify distributions and gather population data. Such data can also be used to backcast threats and potential distributions through time. We outline an approach that could result in: (i) preliminary assessments of the conservation status of tens of thousands of species not previously assessed, (ii) significant enhancements in the coverage and representation of plant species on the IUCN Red List, and (iii) repeat and/or retrospective assessments for a significant proportion of these. This would result in more robust Sampled Red List Indices that can be defended as more representative of plant diversity as a whole; and eventually, comprehensive assessments at species level for one or more major families of angiosperms. The combined results would allow scientifically defensible generalizations about the current status of plant diversity by 2010 as well as tentative comments on trends. Together with other efforts already underway, this approach would establish a firmer basis for ongoing monitoring of the status of plant diversity beyond 2010 and a basis for comparison with the trend data available for vertebrates.

In de toekomst zijn rijksoverheid en provincies minder direct betrokken bij bestemmingsplannen, daarom wordt het gemeentelijk niveau belangrijker. Omdat onvoldoende duidelijk is welke landschapswaarden het Rijk wil behouden en ontwikkelen, bestaat het risico op verdergaand verlies van landschapskwaliteit

Discoveries of new species and new records of species are the order of the day in Vietnam, a country with a high level of biodiversity and many areas still largely unexplored. In recent years many conifers have been discovered for the first time in the country, and this paper focuses on three of these. The Vulnerable Pinus krempfii is an endemic of exceptional scientific interest. The globally Vulnerable Taiwania cryptomerioides, a conifer of ancient lineage in the Cupressaceae previously only known to occur with certainty in Taiwan and the border region between Myanmar and China, is a new discovery for Vietnam, where it is Critically Endangered. The Critically Endangered Xanthocyparis vietnamensis, a new genus and species in the Cupressaceae, was described in 2001 and is restricted to limestone outcrops on the border with China. All three species are of high conservation concern due to their rarity and because of threats to their survival from expanding cultivation, felling and fires. We discuss the suitability of these three conifers as flagship species to promote forest conserva- tion in Vietnam. We also discuss the problems involved in the protection of these species, and the efforts that are currently being undertaken to conserve them.

We report the use of carbon–proton heteronuclear selective refocusing 2D NMR experiments dedicated to the spectral analysis of enantiomers dissolved in weakly ordering chiral liquid crystalline solvents. The method permits the extraction of carbon–proton residual dipolar couplings for each enantiomer from a complex or unresolved proton-coupled 13C spectral patterns. Illustrative examples are analysed and discussed. It is shown that an accurate determination of enantiomeric excess is possible. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Nieuwe bebouwing tast de openheid van het landschap aan en verlaagt de belevingswaarde. Op basis van berekeningen en veldwaarnemeningen is vastgesteld dat het areaal aan zogenaamde ¿zeer open gebieden¿ tussen 1989 en 2000 met 4% is afgenomen. De toekomstige bedreiging is in hoge mate afhankelijk van de mate van spreiding. Bij 50% meer spreiding dan tussen 1989 en 2000 is het effect twee keer zo groot.

ertoe geleid dat in de directe omgeving van steden grote open gebieden onbebouwd zijn gebleven. Bovendien zijn er grote groene recreatiegebieden aangelegd die zeer in trek zijn bij omwonenden. Planologische onduidelijkheid, onvoldoende bestuurlijke regie en, daarmee samenhangend, ontwikkelingen op de grondmarkt hebben ertoe geleid dat de aanleg van groengebieden de afgelopen jaren stagneert. Recentelijk is het rijksbeleid overgedragen aan provincies. Deze hebben echter nog moeite om de integrale ontwikkeling van grote groengebieden in samenhang met rood te regisseren. Vooral ervaring en middelen ontbreken. Omdat projectontwikkelaars inmiddels aanzienlijke grondposities in strategische delen van de bufferzones hebben verworven, moeten provincies publiek-private samenwerking opzetten om de geplande groengebieden te realiseren. KELK (een methode van het Natuurplanbureau) modelleert geen processen, maar gebruikt expertkennis (vuistregels) en metamodellen. Klek is bedoeld voor quick scan toepassingen op het terrein van bestemming en inrichting van de groene ruimte. Daarbij kunnen de kwalificaties meegegeven worden "herkenbaarheid verleden" "belevingswaarde" en "recreatieve gebruikswaarde"

Van minister tot burgemeester, bestuurders willen weten wat het effect van grondgebruikswijzigingen is op het landschap. Met het Kennismodel Effecten Landschap Kwaliteit (KELK) wordt in die behoefte voorzien. Dankzij vele 'effectkaarten' (opgebouwd per 250m2) worden vragen beantwoord als 'welke planvariant levert volgens de gemiddelde burger een hogere landschapskwaliteit op en waarom, en welke effecten zijn te verwachten volgens landschapsdeskundigen'?

Alterra heeft drie landsdekkende instrumenten ontwikkeld voor de graadmeters landschap, beleving en recreatie die worden ingezet bij het werk voor de Natuurplanbureaufunctie. De drie instrumenten zijn geoperationaliseerd met programmatuur die speciaal is ontwikkeld voor kennissystemen: Osiris. De instrumenten zijn gevuld met expertkennis en landsdekkende data, waarmee beleidsvragen op het gebied van landschap, beleving en recreatie op een snelle, herhaalbare en transparante wijze kunnen worden beantwoord. Het betreft: Monitoringsysteem Schaalkenmerken, BelevingsGIS en Kennismodel Effecten Landschap Kwaliteit (KELK) . De eerste twee instrumenten zijn vooral ontwikkeld voor het landsdekkend op kaart brengen van landschapskenmerken en -waarden, en voor het monitoren van veranderingen van landschappelijke waarden. Zij leveren input voor het derde instrument, KELK. KELK is ontwikkeld om de gevolgen van geplande of voorziene ruimtegebruiksveranderingen voor het landschap in beeld te brengen. Voor het waarborgen van de kwaliteit van (ruimtelijke) gegevens en indicatoren is centrale ontsluiting en gestandaardiseerde beschrijving van megadata noodzakelijk. Recent is een inventarisatie gemaakt van bestanden, die betrekking hebben op de beleidsdomeinen natuur, groene ruimte, recreatie en landbouw (beschikbaar via de website van Natuurplanbureau). Voor de beleidssectoren milieu en water zal een aanvullende inventarisatie nodig zijn
