Context. Establishing the number of faint active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z = 4-6 is crucial to understanding their cosmological importance as main contributors to the reionization of the Universe. Aims. In order to derive the AGN contribution to the cosmological ionizing emissivity we have selected faint AGN candidates at z> 4 in the CANDELS GOODS-South field, which is one of the deepest fields with extensive multiwavelength coverage from Chandra, HST, Spitzer, and various ground-based telescopes. Methods. We have adopted a relatively novel criterion. As a first step, high redshift galaxies are selected in the NIR H band down to very faint levels (H ≤ 27) using reliable photometric redshifts. At z > 4 this corresponds to a selection criterion based on the galaxy rest-frame UV flux. AGN candidates are then picked up from this parent sample if they show X-ray fluxes above a threshold of FX ~ 1.5 × 10-17 erg cm-2 s-1 (0.5-2 keV), corresponding to a probability of spurious detections of 2 × 10-4 in the deep X-ray 4 Ms Chandra image. Results. We have found 22 AGN candidates at z > 4 and we have derived the first estimate of the UV luminosity function in the redshift interval 4 < z < 6.5 and absolute magnitude interval - 22.5 ≲ M1450 ≲ -18.5 typical of local Seyfert galaxies. The faint end of the derived luminosity function is about two to four magnitudes fainter at z ~ 4-6 than that derived from previous UV surveys. We estimated ionizing emissivities and hydrogen photoionization rates in the same redshift interval under reasonable assumptions and after discussion of possible caveats, the most important being the large uncertainties involved in the estimate of photometric redshift for sources with featureless, almost power-law SEDs and/or low average escape fraction of ionizing photons from the AGN host galaxies. Both effects could, in principle, significantly reduce the estimated average volume densities and/or ionizing emissivities, especially at the highest redshifts. Conclusions. At z = 4-6.5 we argue that, under reasonable evaluations of possible biases, the probed AGN population can produce photoionization rates consistent with that required to keep the intergalactic medium observed in the Lyman-a forest of high redshift QSO spectra highly ionized, providing an important contribution to the cosmic reionization. Context. Determining the dust properties and UV attenuation of distant star-forming galaxies is of great interest for our understanding of galaxy formation and cosmic star formation in the early Universe. However, few direct measurements exist so far. Aims. To shed new light on these questions, we have targeted two recently discovered Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at z ≈ 6.8 and z = 7.508 to search for dust continuum and [C Π] λ158 μm line emission. Methods. The strongly lensed z ≈ 6.8 LBG A1703-zD1 behind the galaxy cluster Abell 1703 and the spectroscopically confirmed z = 7.508 LBG z8-GND-5296 in the GOODS-N field were observed with the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) at 1.2 mm. These observations were combined with those of three z > 6.5 Lyα emitters (HCM6A, Himiko, and IOK-1), for which deep measurements were recently obtained with the PdBI and ALMA. Results. [C Π] is undetected in both galaxies, providing a deep upper limit of L[CΠ] < 2.8 × 107 Lʘ for A1703-zD1, comparable to the nondetections of Himiko and IOK-1 with ALMA. Dust continuum emission from A1703-zD1 and z8-GND-5296 is not detected with an rms of 0.12 and 0.16 mJy/beam. From these nondetections and earlier multiwavelength observations we derive upper limits on their IR luminosity and star formation rate, dust mass, and UV attenuation. Thanks to strong gravitational lensing, the achieved limit for A1703-zD1 is similar to those achieved with ALMA, probing below the luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG) regime (LIR < 8.1×1010 Lʘ) and very low dust masses (Md < 1.6 × 107 Mʘ). We find that all five galaxies are compatible with the Calzetti IRX-ß relation, their UV attenuation is compatible with several indirect estimates from other methods (the UV slope, extrapolation of the attenuation measured from the IR/UV ratio at lower redshift, and spectral energy distribution fits), and the dust-to-stellar mass ratio is compatible with that of galaxies from z = 0 to 3. From their stellar mass, the high-z galaxies studied here have an attenuation below the one expected from the mean relation of low-redshift (z ≲ 1.5) galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To compare general and diseasebased modeling for fluid resuscitation and vasopressor use in intensive care units. Methods: Retrospective cohort study involving 2944 adult medical and surgical intensive care unit (ICU) patients receiving fluid resuscitation. Within this cohort there were two disease-based groups, 802 patients with a diagnosis of pneumonia, and 143 patients with a diagnosis of pancreatitis. Fluid resuscitation either progressing to subsequent vasopressor administration or not was used as the primary outcome variable to compare general and disease-based modeling. Results: Patients with pancreatitis, pneumonia and the general group all shared three common predictive features as core variables, arterial base excess, lactic acid and platelets. Patients with pneumonia also had non-invasive systolic blood pressure and white blood cells added to the core model, and pancreatitis patients additionally had temperature. Disease-based models had significantly higher values of AUC (p < 0.05) than the general group (0.82 ± 0.02 for pneumonia and 0.83 ± 0.03 for pancreatitis vs. 0.79 ± 0.02 for general patients). Conclusions: Disease-based predictive modeling reveals a different set of predictive variables compared to general modeling and improved performance. Star-forming galaxies at redshifts z > 6 are likely responsible for the reionization of the universe, and it is important to study the nature of these galaxies. We present three candidates for z ~ 7 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) from a 155 arcmin² area in the CANDELS/COSMOS field imaged by the deep FourStar Galaxy Evolution (ZFourGE) survey. The FourStar medium-band filters provide the equivalent of R ~ 10 spectroscopy, which cleanly distinguishes between z ~ 7 LBGs and brown dwarf stars. The distinction between stars and galaxies based on an object's angular size can become unreliable even when using Hubble Space Telescope imaging; there exists at least one very compact z ~ 7 candidate (FWHM ~ 0.5-1 kpc) that is indistinguishable from a point source. The medium-band filters provide narrower redshift distributions compared with broadband-derived redshifts. The UV luminosity function derived using the three z ~ 7 candidates is consistent with previous studies, suggesting an evolution at the bright end (MUV ~ -21.6 mag) from z ~ 7 to z ~ 5. Fitting the galaxies' spectral energy distributions, we predict Lyα equivalent widths for the two brightest LBGs, and find that the presence of a Lyα line affects the medium-band flux thereby changing the constraints on stellar masses and UV spectral slopes. This illustrates the limitations of deriving LBG properties using only broadband photometry. The derived specific star-formation rates for the bright LBGs are ~13 Gyr-1, slightly higher than the lower-luminosity LBGs, implying that the star-formation rate increases with stellar mass for these galaxies. We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ≃ 1-3 selected using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) UVIS channel filters. These HST/WFC3 observations cover about 50 arcmin2 in the GOODS-South field as a part of the WFC3 Early Release Science program. These LBGs at z ≃ 1-3 are selected using dropout selection criteria similar to high-redshift LBGs. The deep multiband photometry in this field is used to identify best-fit SED models, from which we infer the following results: (1) the photometric redshift estimate of these dropout-selected LBGs is accurate to within few percent; (2) the UV spectral slope β is redder than at high redshift (z > 3), where LBGs are less dusty; (3) on average, LBGs at z ≃ 1-3 are massive, dustier, and more highly star forming, compared to LBGs at higher redshifts with similar luminosities (0.1L " ≲ L ≲ 2.5L "), though their median values are similar within 1σ uncertainties. This could imply that identical dropout selection technique, at all redshifts, finds physically similar galaxies; and (4) the stellar masses of these LBGs are directly proportional to their UV luminosities with a logarithmic slope of ∼0.46, and star formation rates are proportional to their stellar masses with a logarithmic slope of ∼0.90. These relations hold true-within luminosities probed in this study-for LBGs from z ≃ 1.5 to 5. The star-forming galaxies selected using other color-based techniques show similar correlations at z ≃ 2, but to avoid any selection biases, and for direct comparison with LBGs at z > 3, a true Lyman break selection at z ≃ 2 is essential. The future HST UV surveys, both wider and deeper, covering a large luminosity range are important to better understand LBG properties and their evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the results of a study exploring the stellar populations of 13 luminous (L > 1.2L*), spectroscopically confirmed, galaxies in the redshift interval 5.5 < z < 6.5, all with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Wide Field Camera 3/infrared and Spitzer Infrared Array Camera imaging from the HST/Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Survey and Spitzer Extended Deep Survey. Based on fitting the observed photometry with galaxy spectral energy distribution (SED) templates covering a wide range of different star formation histories, including exponentially increasing star formation rates and a self-consistent treatment of Lyα emission, we find that the derived stellar masses lie within the range of 109< M* < 1010 M⊙ and are robust to within a factor of 2. In contrast, we confirm previous reports that the ages of the stellar populations are poorly constrained. Although the best-fitting models for 3/13 of the sample have ages of ≳300 Myr, the degeneracies introduced by dust extinction mean that only two of these objects actually require a ≳300 Myr old stellar population to reproduce the observed photometry. We also explore SED fitting with more general, two-component models (burst plus ongoing star formation), thereby relaxing the requirement that the current star formation rate and assembled stellar mass must be coupled, and allow for nebular line+continuum emission. On average, the inclusion of nebular emission leads to lower stellar mass estimates (median offset 0.18 dex), moderately higher specific star formation rates, and allows for a wider range of plausible stellar ages. However, based on our SED modelling, we find no strong evidence for extremely young ages in our sample (i.e. <50 Myr). Finally, considering all of the different star formation histories explored, we find that the median best-fitting ages are of the order of ≃200–300 Myr and that the objects with the tightest constraints indicate ages in the range of 50–200 Myr. We discuss the structural and morphological properties of galaxies in a z = 1.62 proto-cluster using near-IR imaging data from Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Camera 3 data of the Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). The cluster galaxies exhibit a clear color-morphology relation: galaxies with colors of quiescent stellar populations generally have morphologies consistent with spheroids, and galaxies with colors consistent with ongoing star formation have disk-like and irregular morphologies. The size distribution of the quiescent cluster galaxies shows a deficit of compact (≲1 kpc), massive galaxies compared to CANDELS field galaxies at z = 1.6. As a result, the cluster quiescent galaxies have larger average effective sizes compared to field galaxies at fixed mass at greater than 90% significance. Combined with data from the literature, the size evolution of quiescent cluster galaxies is relatively slow from z 1.6 to the present, growing as (1 + z)-0.6±0.1. If this result is generalizable, then it implies that physical processes associated with the denser cluster region seem to have caused accelerated size growth in quiescent galaxies prior to z = 1.6 and slower subsequent growth at z ≃ 1.6 compared to galaxies in the lower density field. The quiescent cluster galaxies at z = 1.6 have higher ellipticities compared to lower redshift samples at fixed mass, and their surface- brightness profiles suggest that they contain extended stellar disks. We argue that the cluster galaxies require dissipationless (i.e., gas-poor or "dry") mergers to reorganize the disk material and to match the relations for ellipticity, stellar mass, size, and color of early-type galaxies in z < 1 clusters.
