Abstract

Background: Evidence supports music-based oncologic support interventions including music therapy. By comparison, little is understood about music-based self-care. This meta-ethnography examined five published qualitative studies to extend understanding of music's relevance, including helpfulness, for people affected by cancer; including children, adolescents, and adults with cancer, carers, and the bereaved.Objective: To improve understanding of music's broad relevance for those affected by cancer.Methods: Meta-ethnography strategies informed the analysis. Five studies were synthesized that included 138 participants: 26 children and 28 parents of children with cancer; 12 adolescents and young adults with cancer; 52 adults with cancer; 12 carers; and 8 bereaved. Studies' category and thematic findings were compared and integrated into third-order interpretations, and a line of argument. Perspectives from the five studies that illuminated the line of argument were developed.Results: Music usage can remain incidental, continue normally, and/or change because of cancer's harsh effects. Music can be a lifeline, support biopsychosocial and spiritual well-being, or become elusive, that is, difficult to experience. Music helps or intrudes because it extends self-awareness and social connections, and prompts play, memories, imageries, and legacies. Music therapists may help patients and carers to recover or extend music's helpful effects.Conclusions: Cancer care can be improved through offering music-based resources/services, which give cancer patients and carers opportunities to extend music usage for personal support and, for carers, to support patients. Music therapists can advocate for such resources and educate health professionals about assessing/recognizing when patients' and carers' changed music behaviors signify additional support needs. Abstract

Meta-synthesis refers to a range of approaches by which existing qualitative studies in healthcare can be reviewed and compared. There is increasing use of meta-synthesis to ensure the clinical applicability of findings from qualitative studies, in healthcare generally, and in the creative arts therapies specifically. Qualitative method research can sometimes lack immediate clinical relevance, as such studies usually focus on the experiences of a small number of participants. Additionally, the results are often presented in great detail; finely elaborated, and described conceptually. Findings reported in this way can be engaging, and even emotionally compelling, however the utility of these outcomes for clinical practice can be limited. Meta-synthesis of multiple studies aims to ensure that findings from qualitative methods studies can be more easily, and effectively, applied in health and social care programs. Three approaches to meta-synthesis are briefly presented here; meta-ethnography, narrative synthesis, and critical interpretive synthesis. Abstract

Interaction with nature has a range of significant health, ecological and economic benefits and a number of governments are implementing policies to increase humans’ engagement with nature. Using a large nationally representative survey sample in Australia, this study provides a detailed comment on the feasibility of such a policy, as well as contributing to an understanding of the characteristics of individuals who engaged in one or more of five dimensions of nature interaction, namely: nature engagement; conservation participation; nature advocacy; environmentally friendly purchasing and future engagement with nature conservation. The results indicate that age, income, education, marital status and household structure are all important influences on various types of nature engagement. It is suggested that increasing opportunities for young people to interact with nature is important, as well as supporting older people's involvement in conservation, plus focusing on the need to target and direct various policies. Abstract

*Introduction* ICSI Meeting Transcripts was produced by Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) catalog number LDC2004T04 and ISBN 1-58563-286-4. The ICSI Meeting corpus is a collection of 75 meetings collected at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley during the years 2000-2002. The meetings included are "natural" meetings in the sense that they would have occurred anyway: they are generally regular weekly meetings of various ICSI working teams, including the team working on the ICSI Meeting Project. In recording meetings of this type, we hoped to capture meeting dynamics and speaking styles that are as natural as possible given that speakers are wearing close-talking microphones and are fully cognizant of the recording process. The speech files range in length from 17 to 103 minutes, but generally run just under an hour each. The speech files are available as ICSI Meeting Speech. *Data* This corpus consists of 75 word-level transcripts (one transcript file per meeting), time-synchronized to digitized audio recordings. There are approximately 795 K-words and 13K unique words in the transcripts. The meetings were recorded with close-talking and far-field microphones. The transcripts were based mostly on the close-talking microphones, either separately or blended together in a so-called "mixed" channel. The focus of the transcripts was on capturing the flow of audible events, especially the words which were spoken, and who spoke them. Transcripts were prepared by means of the "Channeltrans" interface. Channeltrans is an extension of the "Transcriber" interface. There are a total of 53 unique speakers in the corpus. Meetings involved anywhere from three to 10 participants, averaging six. Word-level orthographic transcriptions are available as ICSI Meeting Transcripts. *Data* The collection includes 922 speech files, for a total of approximately 72 hours of Meeting Room speech. The speech is structured as one subdirectory per meeting, containing wavefiles for each channel (and possible .blp file, specifying any censored intervals). The audio was collected at a 48 kHZ sample-rate, downsampled on the fly to 16 kHz. Audio files for each meeting are provided as separate time-synchronous recordings for each channel, encoded as 16-bit linear (big-endian) wavefiles, shorten-compressed in NIST SPHERE format. The meetings were simultaneously recorded using close-talking microphones for each speaker (generally head-mounted, but early meetings contain some lapel microphones), as well as six table-top microphones: four high-quality omnidirectional PZM microphones arrayed down the center of the conference table, and two inexpensive microphone elements mounted on a mock PDA. A group of 23 music therapists from ten different countries met at Gutshof Sauen, in the Brandenberg region. Gutshof Sauen is owned by the UdK and other Berlin colleges of the arts and has been specifically established for use by such meetings.
