Building on the work of Professional Noticing of Children's Mathematical Thinking, we introduce the Curricular Noticing Framework to describe how teachers recognize opportunities within curriculum materials, understand their affordances and limitations, and use strategies to act on them. This framework builds on Remillard's (2005) notion of "participation with" curriculum materials, connects with and broadens existing research on the relationship between teachers and written curriculum, and highlights new areas for research. We argue that once mathematics educators better understand the strategic curricular practices that support ambitious teaching, which we refer to as "professional curricular noticing," such knowledge could lead to recommendations for how to support the curricular work of teachers and novice teachers in particular.

This three-year qualitative study examined how district personnel interpreted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English language arts for bilingual teachers' Spanish literacy instruction and the changes that four dual-language (DL) teachers (K-2) made in their Spanish literacy instruction in response to their participation in professional staff development (PSD) on formative assessments tied to the CCSS. Although the district personnel showed ideological and political clarity when they implemented a DL program and rejected CCSS inappropriate for bilingual students, they showed a lack of clarity when they failed to provide Spanish literacy and DL standards. In response to the socio-culturally oriented PSD, two of the DL teachers, who previously had taught Spanish reading, effectively implemented formative assessments, which led to teacher and student goal setting and sharing, student self-assessment, peer assessment, and instructional differentiation. However, it took two-three years, scaffolded support, and teacher sharing and collaboration for them to implement the formative assessments. The lack of Spanish literacy and DL standards meant that other changes in their Spanish literacy instruction were limited. In response to the PSD, the veteran kindergarten teacher made a change in her writing instruction, but never understood formative assessments and didn't implement them. The learning curve for the teacher without teaching experience in Spanish reading was too steep for her to benefit from the PSD on formative assessments. To improve DL teachers' Spanish literacy instruction, the development and implementation of Spanish language arts and DL standards, along with socio-cultural PSD on formative assessments, were recommended.

BackgroundThe arrhythmic role of the left atrial appendage (LAA) has been implicated in the maintenance of persistent atrial fibrillation. LAA isolation with catheter ablation has been successful but is limited by the risk of tamponade and electromechanical dissociation with the potential for LAA thrombus formation.ObjectiveTo assess whether LAA ligation results in LAA electrical isolation.MethodsA total of 68 patients with contraindication or intolerance to oral anticoagulation therapy underwent LAA ligation with the LARIAT suture delivery device. Patients had unipolar [n = 30(44%)] or bipolar [n = 38(56%)] voltage measurements pre- and post-LAA ligation.ResultsAll 68 patients underwent successful LAA ligation. There was a statistically significant reduction in the mean LAA voltage from pre-ligation (unipolar pre-ligation voltage 1.1 ± 0.53 mV; bipolar pre-ligation voltage 4.7 ± 2.83 mV) to post-ligation (unipolar post-ligation voltage 0.3 ± 0.38 mV; bipolar post-ligation voltage 0.6 ± 0.27 mV). Ninety-four percent of the patients had a reduction in the LAA voltage after the closure of the snare, with 10 of 30 (33%) of the patients having complete elimination of LAA voltage with the initial tightening of the suture. Pacing from the LAA after the closure of the snare resulted in lack of capture of the left atrium in 28 of 31 patients.ConclusionsThe snare closure of the LAA using the LARIAT device produces an acute reduction in the LAA voltage and inhibits the capture of the left atrium during LAA pacing. Future studies are needed to determine whether LAA ligation affects atrial fibrillation burden.

This report outlines the case of a child affected by a type of congenital disorder of glycosylation (CDG) known as ALG2-CDG (OMIM 607906), presenting as a congenital myasthenic syndrome (CMS) caused by variants identified in ALG2, which encodes an α1,3-mannosyltransferase (EC 2.4.1.132) involved in the early steps of N-glycosylation. To date, fourteen cases of ALG2-CDG have been documented worldwide. From birth, the child experienced perinatal asphyxia, muscular weakness, feeding difficulties linked to an absence of the sucking reflex, congenital hip dislocation, and hypotonia. Over time, additional complications emerged, such as inspiratory stridor, gastroesophageal reflux, low intake, recurrent seizures, respiratory infections, an inability to maintain the head upright, and a global developmental delay. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) revealed the presence of two ALG2 variants in compound heterozygosity: a novel variant c.1055_1056delinsTGA p.(Ser352Leufs*3) and a variant of uncertain significance (VUS) c.964C>A p.(Pro322Thr). Additional studies, including determination of carbohydrate-deficient transferrin (CDT) revealed a mild type I CDG pattern and the presence of an abnormal transferrin glycoform containing a linear heptasaccharide consisting of one sialic acid, one galactose, one N-acetyl-glucosamine, two mannoses and two N-acetylglucosamines (NeuAc- Gal-GlcNAc-Man2-GlcNAc2), ALG2-CDG diagnostic biomarker, confirming the pathogenicity of these variants. The ThCr2Si2 structure type has been well explored for decades with diverse magnetic, superconducting, and heavy-fermion behavior. For transition metal-containing ThCr2Si2-type compounds, a metallic band structure and properties are typical. In this work, a rare example of semiconducting BaCuTP2 (T = Al, Ga, In) materials is reported. BaCuTP2 materials retain the tetragonal I4/mmm ThCr2Si2-type crystal structure with a large c/a ratio of ~3.3, where Cu and T metals jointly occupy the Cr-site. Edge-sharing (Cu/T)P4 tetrahedra form [CuTP2]2-layers stacked along the crystallographic [001] direction, with the Ba2+ cations located in the interlayer spaces. Solid state NMR revealed partial short-range ordering in the Cu/T sublattice. The composition of the produced phases is electron balanced, Ba2+Cu1+T3+(P3-)2. High values of Seebeck coefficients were experimentally observed due to the high valley degeneracy in the band structure. Heat capacity and structural studies show that Ba exhibits anisotropic 'rattling-like' behavior along the [001] direction in Ga- and In-containing compounds. A combination of Ba rattling, short range Cu/T ordering, and a recently discovered coupling between acoustic and optical phonons for ThCr2Si2- type phosphides, resulted in ultralow thermal conductivity (<0.50 W m-1 K-1) for the title compounds. Adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) are vulnerable populations to HIV/AIDS. We conducted a cross-sectional survey among 637 AGYW in Cameroon to study the feasibility and willingness to use mobile applications (apps) for HIV testing, prevention, and treatment. We found that phone ownership is high amongAGYW, where 93.9% (n5598) of them (median age: 22 years, interquartile range: 21-24 years) had access to a smartphone, 49.5% (n5315) frequently searched for health information, and 48.9% (n5312) frequently used health-related apps. AGYW's willingness to use mobile apps for HIV testing, prevention, and treatment were 87.9% (n5560), 84.4% (n5538), and 84.9% (n5541), respectively. The high willingness to use apps was associated with older age, HIV testing, and searching for health information on a phone. Barriers to willingness included having no internet access, concerns about internet cost and privacy, and lack of consistent access to a smartphone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity. Viloxazine extended-release (ER) capsules (Qelbree®) is a US Food and Drug Administration–approved nonstimulant treatment option for children, adolescents, and adults with ADHD. This review manuscript summarizes the neurobiology of ADHD and currently available treatment options before discussing viloxazine pharmacology, efficacy, safety, and tolerability data from phase II and III trials in children and adolescents (6–17 years old). Viloxazine clinical efficacy has also been further demonstrated by post hoc analyses of pediatric clinical trial results. Current stimulant and nonstimulant treatments for ADHD may be suboptimal given low response rates and that tolerability issues are frequently experienced. Preclinical and clinical evidence has implicated both the role of catecholamine and serotonin signaling in the pathophysiology of ADHD and the pharmacologic effect of viloxazine on these critical neurotransmitter systems. With a relatively rapid onset of action, sustained symptom improvement, and clinical benefit in ADHD-associated impairments (functional and social), viloxazine ER represents a novel and emerging ADHD treatment option. The main objective of this study was to investigate the underlying factors contributing to unsafe behavior among machinery operators through questionnaires distributed among a sample of 48 operators. Data analysis conducted via SPSS software and Spearman analysis revealed several key contributors to unsafe behavior. These factors encompassed demographical aspects (such as age and educational background), job-related stress, dissatisfaction at work, social support, and the impact of addictive behaviors. Spearman correlation analysis further elucidated the interconnectedness among these variables offering insights valuable in mitigating unsafe behaviors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
