Child maltreatment is an important public health problem endangering massive negative impacts on victim at the physical and psychological levels. Child abuse and neglect occurs when an adult or another child intentionally harm a child. It can be physical, sexual, or mental and may happen in person or online. Among health professionals, dentists are probably in the most favorable position to recognize child abuse, with the opportunities to observe and assess not only the physical and psychological condition of the children, but also the family environment. A high frequency of facial injury associated with physical abuse places the dentist at the forefront of professionals to detect and treat an abused child. Screening for maltreatment should be an integral part of any clinical examination performed on a child. After a potential child abuse case is detected, it should be notified to social services, the child protective services, and/or the juvenile prosecution service. There is a high discrepancy in figures of child abuse cases and the reports created by dentists. Consequently, it is necessary to train the professionals and establish a protocol of action.
