Local recurrence occurs in 4-47% of breast cancer patients and is often associated with development of metastatic foci and resistant cell populations. Thus, recurrent breast cancer indicates a poor prognosis for the patient. Local tumor-derived 13762NF rat mammary adenocarcinoma cell clone MTF7(T20) was injected into the inguinal mammary fat pad and allowed to grow before surgical excision. Individual locally growing (primary) tumors were removed and established in short-term tissue culture. Corresponding local recurrences were excised after regrowth and established in short-term tissue culture. All sublines were tested for in vitro sensitivities to 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine, Adriamycin, and ionizing X-irradiation. Using a clonogenic colony formation assay, responses of individual sublines ranged from 85 to 1500 ng/ml for Adriamycin and 65 to 10,000 nM for FdUrd. Some recurrences were significantly more resistant while others were more sensitive than the corresponding primary tumor lines. All recurrences had smaller 90% lethal dose values than the corresponding parent or primary tumor in response to Adriamycin; whereas, to 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine, 90% lethal dose values revealed that most lines were quite resistant. Statistically significant differences in radiation survival were observed only for lines LR1a and LR5 (more sensitive). There was no apparent correlation between sensitivities to chemotherapy agents or X-irradiation and experimental metastatic potential in LR sublines. These dose-response data indicate that locally recurrent tumors are frequently, but not always, different from the original primary tumor in response to chemotherapy agents and ionizing X-irradiation. Although an exact mechanism is unknown, it is likely that "selective" pressures which eliminate large numbers of cells, in this case surgery, change tumor composition so that recurrent tumors may no longer be equivalent to the tumor mass that was originally excised. This suggests that treatment strategies should be planned accordingly.

Our study shows that use of a small dose of subconjunctival 5-FU provides significantly lower postoperative intraocular pressure than does no antimetabolite treatment. Morphology of the postoperative blebs suggests that increased filtration results in lower intraocular pressure in the 5-FU group. Corneal epithelial defects were as common with a low dose as with higher doses previously described.

Twenty-one cystic fibrosis patients under 3 years of age were enrolled in an open multicenter study to assess the feasibility of the study design and to compare selected pharmacologic features of cephalexin or dicloxacillin administered orally for 2 months. Patient tolerance and compliance were significantly less for dicloxacillin (p less than .01 and p less than .001, respectively). Superficial Candida infections were more common in the cephalexin group (p = 0.02), however increased stool frequency and nonspecific diaper rashes were more prevalent in patients receiving dicloxacillin (p less than .05). Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from respiratory secretions after 2 months from two dicloxacillin and no cephalexin patients. Areas under the curve and peak serum concentrations were higher for cephalexin (p less than .05 and p = .02), but antistaphylococcal activity in serum was higher for dicloxacillin (p less than .05) due to a lower mean MIC compared to cephalexin. Deep pharyngeal plus routine throat culture yielded more pathogens than either method alone. Express mail and central processing of respiratory specimens was efficient for most organisms, however there was some loss of Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Cephalexin was associated with better patient acceptance and compliance despite higher rates of superficial fungal infections as compared to dicloxacillin. Cephalexin, routine bacteriologic throat swabs processed locally or centrally, mail-in urine compliance assessment and a multicenter design are feasible components for a long-term prospective evaluation of antibiotic prophylaxis in patients with cystic fibrosis.

A series of rat 13762NF mammary adenocarcinoma cell clones and subclones of various lung metastatic potentials were examined for their abilities to degrade rat lung subendothelial matrix and purified basement membrane type IV collagen. Metastatic potentials were simultaneously determined based on the ability to form "spontaneous" lung metastases after s.c. injection or "experimental" lung metastases after i.v. injection of cells. Microvessel endothelial cells isolated from rat lung were grown in vitro, and the subendothelial matrix containing type IV collagen was metabolically labeled with [3H]proline. When mammary adenocarcinoma cells were placed on the isolated subendothelial matrix, fragmentation and solubilization of [3H]proline-labeled components were observed; highly metastatic 13762NF cells solubilized the matrix at higher rates than did poorly metastatic cells. The 13762NF cells were assayed for type IV collagenolytic activity using [3H]proline-labeled type IV collagen purified from Engelbreth-Holm-Swarm tumor as a substrate. We found excellent correlation between the type IV collagenolytic activities of living cells and their "spontaneous" lung metastatic potentials (r = 0.993). The levels of type IV collagenolytic activity in the conditioned medium depended on the cell culture conditions. In the presence or absence of acid-treated fetal bovine serum, highly metastatic cells secreted higher amounts of type IV collagenolytic enzymes in active and latent forms than did poorly metastatic cells. Incubation of procollagen type IV with medium conditioned by highly metastatic 13762NF cells and treated with trypsin resulted in the production of several large fragments characteristic of type IV collagen. The results suggest that enzymatic degradation of basement membrane type IV collagen is important in lung metastasis of 13762NF mammary adenocarcinoma cells.

In vitro susceptibility to 17 antimicrobial agents was determined for Aeromonas caviae, A. hydrophila, and A. sobria isolated from feces of patients with diarrhea. The three Aeromonas species shared a similar susceptibility pattern, except to cephalothin. Of the oral antimicrobial agents, the quinolones, followed by chloramphenicol, were most active; trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline had good but variable activity.

Listeria monocytogenes was examined for superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity. Two catalase-negative strains possessed at least twofold greater SOD activities than the catalase-positive L. monocytogenes strains examined. Growth conditions such as aeration and iron concentration influenced the specific activity of SOD obtained from cells cultured in defined media. L. monocytogenes SOD from crude extracts and after partial purification was analyzed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Iron was associated with the single band of SOD activity detected in the gels. SOD activity appeared to be primarily extracytoplasmic. Survival of organisms in a superoxide-generating medium was studied, with photoactivation of riboflavin used as the source of free radical formation. Virulent, catalase-positive L. monocytogenes strains were relatively resistant to killing in a pH 7 superoxide-containing medium. An intact-cell assay for SOD was developed, which used the superoxide-generating system and employed the superoxide-dependent oxidation of sulfite, added to the medium, and inhibition of this oxidation by SOD. Maximal SOD activites of intact cells were observed when 100 to 400 micrograms (dry weight) of viable Listeria cells per ml was added to the medium. A possible role for SOD in the pathogenesis of listeric infection is discussed.

Bacterial antigens representing 14 of the most common clinical isolates requiring serological confirmation for identification were prepared. These antigens were stable for periods in excess of 5 months, readily available, and sero-specific. Use of these antigens for quality control of bacterial typing antisera increased the accuracy, reduced the technician time, and obviated the delay which otherwise occurred while stock isolates were subcultured to provide a sero-specific control for this procedure.

We have recently shown how the order dependence of the energy of sublattice disorder affects the form of the sublattice melting transition in ionic crystals.1,2 A microscopic model for the energy of disorder has been derived by adapting an approximate theory for the energy of formation of isolated point defects to the case of large defect concentrations. The model, which is a modification of the Mott-Littleton theory of point defect energetics, takes account of electronic polarization and ionic displacements and is based on a realistic description of cohesion in ionic crystals. The approximate model agrees within about 30% with more elaborate calculations in the isolated defect limit. At large defect concentrations, in the molecular field approximation, relaxation of ionic positions and electronic polarization occur as a consequence of fluctuations of the local interaction potentials from the mean. The energy per added defect (disorder) decreases with increasing disorder, largely due to the volume dependence of elastic and dielectric constants. When this model is combined with an approximate description of the liquid state, conditions on the relative ionic charges, radii, and polarizabilities which permit the onset of sublattice melting prior to overall melting can be obtained. Such conditions are illustrated by model calculations for the zincblende structure which show that a large difference between the electronic polarizabilities of the two ionic species favors sublattice melting, while a large volume dependence of the total unit cell polarizability favors overall melting.

High hydrostatic pressure has been shown to reverse the anesthetic effects of barbiturates. However, attempts to distinguish between two possible causes of this reversal, changes in drug disposition or changes in drug-receptor interaction, have not been reported. This study examined the possible effects of hyperbaria and hyperbaric hyperoxia on the distribution and clearance of pentobarbital in the dog. The drug was administered to six mixed-breed dogs as a 30 mg/kg i.v. bolus at 1 ATA breathing air, 6 ATA breathing air, and 2.8 ATA breathing 100% oxygen, with serial blood sampling for 12 h. Pharmacokinetic and statistical analyses showed no significant effects of hyperbaria or hyperbaric hyperoxia on the total plasma clearance, volume of distribution or elimination half-life. If pressure reversal of barbiturate anesthesia occurs at these pressures, changes in the disposition of the drug are not the causative factors.

Murine B16 melanoma sublines have been sequentially selected in vivo for low (B16-F1) or high (B16-F10) lung, high ovary (B16-O10) or high brain (B16-B15b) colonization, and in vitro for enhanced tissue invasion (B16-BL6). These B16 sublines were tested in vitro in a syngeneic organ adhesion/invasion assay to determine differences in tumor and/or host tissue properties that might account for preferential metastasis to certain sites. Tissues used were murine C57BL/6 lung, ovary and heart. In 8 independent experiments high lung-colonizing B16-F10 cells bound to and infiltrated into lung tissue better than ovary or heart tissue, while high ovary-colonizing B16-O10 cells attached to and invaded into ovary tissue at higher rates than lung or heart tissue. Only highly tissue-invasive B16-BL6 cells were able to invade heart tissue within 18 h in the experiments. The results suggest that organ metastatic colonization preferences by malignant cells may be determined, in part, by differences in the abilities of metastatic tumor cells to attach to and invade target tissue.

Summary This case report concerns a man with undiagnosed primary amyloidosis who developed resistant cardiac failure after a minor surgical procedure.

Killing curves were employed to determine the in vitro bactericidal activity of cefoperazone against several aerobic bacterial species of clinical origin. Cefoperazone was bactericidal at concentrations equal to, or greater than, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) but allowed regrowth of the organisms after four to six hours when tested in concentrations of one-fourth or one-half the MIC. Comparative studies with gentamicin, LY127935 (moxalactam), piperacillin, cefamandole, and cephalothin indicate that, in general, cefoperazone demonstrated similar killing activity as other beta-lactam compounds, with some strain differences noted. Gentamicin, as the representative aminoglycoside, demonstrated a greater rate of bactericidal activity than the beta-lactam compounds studied.

Pseudomonas gladioli was isolated from 11 patients with cystic fibrosis. It resembled Pseudomonas cepacia on the selective and differential medium OFPBL, producing yellow colonies after 48 to 72 h of incubation. Isolates were characterized biochemically, by DNA hybridization, and by cellular fatty acid analysis. A review of the clinical status of selected patients colonized by P. gladioli did not reveal any apparent association of this organism with infectious complications of cystic fibrosis. Thus, the clinical implications may differ depending on which of these two closely related species is reported by laboratories. Determination of the fatty acid profile of isolates by gas chromatography may be a useful adjunct to biochemical characterization as a means of identification. In contrast to P. cepacia, most isolates of P. gladioli contained 3-OH C10:0 fatty acid under the growth conditions used.

Three groups of six dogs each were instrumented with an electromagnetic flow-meter around the pulmonary artery, and indwelling silastic cannulas in the pulmonary artery, the left ventricle, the ascending aorta and the right atrium. After allowing 5-7 d for recovery the dogs were studied under normobaric conditions, breathing air, at 2.8 atmospheres absolute (ATA) breathing 100% oxygen (PO2 approximately equal to 2128 mm Hg) and at 6 ATA breathing air (PO2 approximately equal to 960 mm Hg). Baseline recordings were made at 1 ATA and repeated after arrival at depth. The dogs were hemorrhaged until the mean aortic pressure fell to 40 mm Hg. Mean aortic pressure was maintained between 40-50 mm Hg for 30 min. Enough lactated Ringer's solution was then infused to stabilize the aortic pressure to within 90% of its original 1 ATA baseline value. Hemodynamic parameters were measured or calculated at eight different times. There were statistically significant differences in some of the measured parameters due to the effects of hemorrhage but no differences between the three groups attributable to either of the hyperbaric conditions or the effects of lactated Ringer's solution.

A counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIE) technique which reacted positively with culture filtrates of Clostridium difficile was developed and compared with a cytotoxicity assay in human embryonic lung cell cultures. CIE, employing C. sordellii antitoxin, detected 17 of 17 C. difficile strains. Of those positive by CIE, 13 were cytotoxic in cell culture. Fourteen Clostridium species other than C. difficile, C. sordellii, and C. bifermentans were negative by CIE. C. sordellii and C. bifermentans gave positive CIE results but were not cytotoxic. Similar sensitivity of toxin detection was observed for both methods. Optimal conditions for performing CIE included use of 48-h chopped meat-glucose broth cultures as the antigen source, use of a 10x-concentrated U.S. Standard C. sordillii antitoxin, and electrophoresis for 1.5 h in 0.05 M tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane-barbital-sodium barbital, pH 8.8, at a constant current of 6 mA/slide. CIE appears to be a suitable alternative to the cytotoxicity assay and may serve as a means for presumptive identification of C. difficile.

Latex agglutination and coagglutination tests are commercially available as Bactogen and the Phadebact Haemophilus Test, respectively. We evaluated both for the detection of Haemophilus influenzae type b in cerebrospinal fluids. Both tests were positive in all of 51 culture-positive cases of meningitis caused by H. influenzae. Both were more sensitive than counterimmunoelectrophoresis. Antigen was also detected by Bactogen in seven of seven additional cerebrospinal fluid specimens (compared with four of seven by Phadebact) after 1 to 15 days of antimicrobial therapy. The cerebrospinal fluid of infants with meningitis owing to other common causative agents did not react with Bactogen or Phadebact. However, the cerebrospinal fluid of one patient with overwhelming infection owing to Proteus mirabilis reacted positively with Bactogen. Cost analysis revealed that Phadebact was less expensive to perform than Bactogen.

Phase-locked semiconductor diode laser arrays are capable of emitting light at high power in low divergence beams. Moreover, because of their small size and high electrical-to-optical conversion efficiency, these devices have many applications. The presentation begins with a review of semiconductor diode lasers and the principles of phased arrays. Various experiments relating to the lasers themselves and to their operation in external cavities are reviewed and the theory of their operation and conditions needed to favor lasing in a desired array mode (supermode) is discussed. The talk concludes with recent results concerning reliability.

Many applications of laser diode arrays, such as optical recording and point-to-point communications, require a stable, near diffraction limited beam. Recently phased array lasers have been demonstrated in which the emitters are locked in-phase but the far field pattern is multi-lobed due to the relative emitter widths and spacing1,2. In this paper we present data on "Y" coupled laser arrays which include flared waveguide at the facet to enlarge the near field spot size of the individual emitters. The near field "fill factor" is greater than 80% resulting in a predominantly single lobe radiation pattern. Such a laser is reported to emit a stable beam up to 150 mW cw.

Two methods for estimating body surface area (BSA) in adult amputees were developed. BSA in sq m was determined in 42 healthy, nonamputee men and women by summing the surface areas of individual body parts obtained using geometric measurements (BSAmeas) and by an equation using height and weight (BSAcalc). Linear regression analysis was used to determine correlations between BSAmeas and BSAcalc and between BSAmeas and surface-area measurements of individual body parts (SApart). The percentages of total BSA contributed by individual body parts in each subject were determined by the ratio of SApart to BSAmeas, and these percentages were compared with the corresponding percentages for body parts using the "Rule of Nines." BSAcalc and BSAmeas were significantly correlated, as were SApart and BSAmeas. Regression analysis of SApart versus BSAmeas yielded an equation for each measured body part that allowed calculation of SApart without direct measurement. SApart expressed as a percentage of total BSA differed from the percentage of BSA used in the "Rule of Nines" by a mean of 12.4-32% depending on the body part. Two methods of estimating BSA in amputees were proposed based on deduction of the surface area of the amputated part (calculated from the regression equation for SApart or as a percentage of total BSA) from total BSAcalc in adult amputees. The two methods developed in this study for estimating BSA may be useful in determining drug dosages in adult amputees and may provide more accurate information in burn therapy. Further studies are needed to validate the clinical application of these methods.

This study compares two well-known tumor cell invasion assays: the human amnion model versus the reconstituted basement membrane (RBM) system in the membrane invasion culture system (MICS). Our purpose was to present the quantification of tumor cell invasion using visual counts and radioactivity assessment in a side-by-side comparison and then to determine reasons for discrepancies in data collection and reporting. Basically, the data showed that: (1) fewer tumor cells invade the amnion membrane compared with the RBM, and substantially more variability exists among the data generated from the amnion assay (probably due to differences in membrane thickness); and (2) the invasive ability of the tumor cells appears to be greater using the radiolabel technique in both the amnion and RBM assay, a portion of which appears to be artifactual. Using the RBM, it was possible to sequentially select several subpopulations of highly invasive tumor cells, which was not possible with the human amnion. The invasive and metastatic potentials of these subpopulations were compared with those of established cell lines (selected in vivo). When analyzed independently, a direct relationship was shown between an increase in invasive ability and an increase in metastatic potential for the sublines selected in vitro and the established lines. However, collectively, it is more difficult to correlate the invasive and metastatic profiles of the sublines versus the established lines, which can probably be attributed to selection factors present during the establishment of the individual cell populations.

With the increasing importance of multifilamentary Nb3Sn conductors for technological uses such as for the production of very high magnetic fields in fusion magnets, means of improving the superconducting critical current density Jc at very high magnetic fields (H > 10 tesla) have been sought intensively, and it has been found that metallurgical factors such as heat treatment conditions,1 alloying additions,2 and mechanical strains3 can strongly influence the critical current density. The correlation of changes in Jc with such metallurgical variations in the Nb3Sn wires has been facilitated by the use of scaling laws for magnetic flux pinning in hard superconductors, and the scaling law developed by Kramer4 has been used frequently.5 We have found in the course of our investigations of the properties of monofilamentary Nb3Sn wires produced by the “bronze process” that the magnetic field dependence of Jc at high fields can qualitatively be characterized well by Kramer’s scaling law. However, when a detailed comparison of the scaling law and available experimental results was made, we found serious inconsistencies in the values of the parameters which appear in the scaling equation.

Diode laser pumps for solid state lasers are reviewed with special emphasis on current and future capabilities.

Single quantum well laser diode arrays with emitting apertures of 200 um have operated up to 8 W cw. Monolithic multi-element arrays with emitting apertures of 1 cm are capable of cw operation up to 76 W cw. Devices fabricated using MOCVD epitaxial growth techniques and highly efficient single quantum well active region structures have exhibited high cw power and high efficiency. Catastrophic power limits of 8 W cw have been demonstrated by a 20 emitter multistripe laser diode with emitting aperture of 200 um. Similar structures consisting of 10 emitters in a 100 um aperture have operated to 6 W cw. (Fig. 1)

Gram-stained smears of specimens submitted for sputum cultures were compared with direct wet mounts examined by Nomarski interference contrast microscopy (NIM) for enumeration of squamous epithelial cells (EPC) and leukocytes (WBC). The results obtained by the two methods were comparable, but specimens were more rapidly screened and cell types were more readily differentiated by NIM. Specimens submitted for sputum culture over a 3-month period were examined for EPC and WBC by NIM. Twenty-two percent of the specimens had greater than 25 EPC/field or a predominance of EPC (class I), 30% had greater than 25 EPC and greater than 25 WBC/field (class II), and 48% had greater than 25 WBC/field or a predominance of WBC (class III). The clinical relevance of the culture results was determined by reviewing the records of patients whose specimens were included in the study. Class I specimens provided only 30% clinically relevant culture results. Specimens in class II provided useful culture results in 63% of the patients, and 96% of those in class III provided clinically relevant information. The results confirm the value of sputum screening and demonstrate that NIM provides a rapid, simple, and accurate method for sputum screening.

Phase-locked diode laser arrays have been studied intensively for their potential as high power optical sources •• •>. Most of the laser designs that have been reported suffer from poor beam quality, beam broadening or steering with increasing drive current. On the other hand, laser arrays in external cavity configurations offer an alternative solution to achieve high power in a diffraction-iimited beam.

Since the discovery by Batterman and Barrettl in 1964 of the 21 K structural transition in V3Si, soon followed by the discovery of a similar transition in Nb3Sn,2 there has been intensive investigation, both theoretical and experimental, of its nature, particularly of its relationship to electronic structure and its coupling to lattice distortions and phonons. [This work is summarized in two excellent reviews by Weger and Goldberg3 and by Allen.4] The transition consists of a tetragonal distortion of the originally cubic unit cell (a shear strain distortion) accompanied by a dimerization of the atoms along the transition metal chains (an optic mode distortion); it is usually called the “martensitic” transition, probably because it is diffusionless, although it is more typical of soft-mode transitions4 than it is like “classical” martensitic phase transitions.5 Since both the structural transition and superconductivity in these compounds are thought to be a consequence of strong electron-lattice coupling, it was thought that an understanding of the relatively simpler structural transition might provide insight into the origin of the relatively high-temperature superconducting transition in intermetallic compounds with the A15 structure. Unfortunately a definitive understanding of either the structural or the superconducting transition in these materials still remains elusive.

Rat 13762NF mammary adenocarcinoma cloned cell lines were assayed at different in vitro passage numbers and compared for their abilities to form 'spontaneous' metastases by subcutaneous injection of cells and 'experimental' metastases by intravenous injection of cells. Tumor cell clones were established from locally growing tumor and spontaneous lung metastases, and these clones were found to possess heterogeneous metastatic potentials in both metastasis assays. The rank order of clonal metastatic potentials based on either the average number of lung tumor colonies or the average total lung tumor volume was generally equivalent for 'spontaneous' and 'experimental' metastases, but some differences were noted. Ranking of 'spontaneous' metastasis by average total lung tumor volumes more closely resembled the rank order of 'experimental' metastasis than by the average number of spontaneous metastases. The results demonstrated that in the 13762NF mammary adenocarcinoma system (i) there is heterogeneity in tumor cell clonal metastatic potential using either 'spontaneous' or 'experimental' assays; (ii) these two assay methods yield generally the same rank order of metastatic potential; (iii) the metastatic potential of each of the tumor cell clones drifts with time (passage number) in cell culture, and (iv) ranking by average tumor burden calculated from total lung tumor volumes may yield a better estimate of metastatic potential than ranking by the average number of lung tumor colonies.

We report the highest electrical to optical conversion efficiency (12.5%), and the highest cw output power (750 mW), from any solid state laser crystal end pumped by a single multiple stripe diode laser array. The optical slope efficiency, which refers to the 1.06 μm output power divided by the optical pump power incident on the end face of our laser crystal, was measured to be 64% in the best case and corresponds to nearly a 95% Nd quantum conversion rate, the highest yet reported.

Baseline recordings were made at 1 ATA and repeated after arrival at depth. The dogs were hemorrhaged until the mean aortic pressure fell to 40 mm Hg. Mean aortic pressure was maintained between 40-50 mm Hg for 30 min. This required a rather constant 40 +/- 4.5 ml X kg-1 body weight of total blood removed. Three groups, one at each depth perturbation, were then given Dextran 70, the other three groups 10% dextrose. Fluids were administered at a constant rate until the mean aortic pressure rose to within 90% of its original 1 ATA baseline value. At this point, the infusion was stopped and the total amount of fluid administered was recorded. Hemodynamic parameters were measured or calculated for eight different time periods during each experiment. The amount of Dextran 70 required did not change with hyperbaric exposure but only half as much 10% dextrose was required at depth. Dextran 70 held the cardiovascular parameters constant for 30 min following administration but after 10% dextrose, cardiac output tended to decrease at 15 and 30 min posttreatment. There were no significant differences in the cardiovascular effects of hemorrhage between or among the dogs exposed to the three different environmental conditions.

Multiple-stripe lasers are promising sources of high-power monochromatic cw optical energy. Lasers with ten stripes have been reported to produce in excess of 800 mW cw,1 while the highest cw power attained to date was 2.6 W from a single facet.2 These lasers have demonstrated their usefulness in pumping Nd:YAG lasers.3,4 Higher-power laser diode arrays can be realized in principle merely by adding more stripes; however, as the width of the laser approaches and exceeds the cavity length, amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) competes for carriers and hinders lasing action.5 Evidently, lasers with more than ~0.4 mm of active width and ~0.25 mm of cavity length must incorporate structures to preclude ASE.

Semiconductor lasers have been packaged and qualified for various applications in space. In this paper we discuss two subsystems, both of which will be launched shortly. The first subsystem employs a partially coherent semiconductor laser array coupled to an optical fiber, and monitored by a photo-diode. This package is used in a highly reliable, moderate data rate, moderate length communications link. The fiber coupled output power is 28 mW and the package has been fully space qualified. That is, it is free of organics, hermetically sealed, and has been subjected to die shear, acceleration, thermal cycling, and other tests. The laser longevity exceeds 10 years of continuous operation. The second subsystem consists of 27 fiber coupled space qualified packaged lasers of the same type as above, but designed to operate at 200 mW power output from the fiber. Twenty-seven fibers are bundled to produce a source with a total power emission in excess of 5 watts cw. The subsystem is part of a beacon, which will be used very shortly in a polar satellite experiment. The lasers employed in the two subsystems described above are only partially coherent and therefore are insufficiently bright to operate in a long distance, high data rate link, except with a prohibitively large lens.

Five different experiments were conducted to determine if estimated liver plasma flow and/or plasma volume were changed as a result of exposure to 2.8 atmospheres absolute (ATA) while breathing 100% oxygen or 6 ATA while breathing compressed air. The experiments were designed to separate the relative roles of the ambient pressure, the partial pressure of oxygen, the time of high oxygen exposure or some combination of these factors on any observed changes. We found that time was not a factor in the changes seen. Hyperbaria resulted in a decrease in estimated liver plasma flow at all pressures greater than 1 ATA. There was an apparent increase in plasma volume at 1.3 ATA and a return towards 1 ATA values at higher pressures. Hyperoxia resulted in a decrease in estimated liver plasma flow at 975 mm Hg but not at 912 mm Hg. The flow was then increased again at 2128 mm Hg. Plasma volume decreased significantly at 912 mm Hg returned to baseline (152 mm Hg) values at 975 mm Hg and then decreased again at 1054 and 2128 mm Hg PO2.
