Objective: Electroencephalography changes that occur during the transition from eyes-closed to the eyes-open state in resting condition are related to the early phase of sensory processing and are defined as activation. The present study aimed to reveal the potential deteriorations that may occur in the initial period of sensory processing in resting electroencephalography between children with subclinical hypothyroidism and a control group., Materials and Methods: Electroencephalographies of 15 children with subclinical hypothyroidism and 15 healthy children aged 10 to 17 years were recorded for 2 minutes for EC and 2 minutes for eyes-open conditions in resting state. Absolute electroencephalography band powers (μV2 ) within the delta, theta, alpha, and beta frequency bands were calculated in Fz, Cz, Pz, and Oz electrodes, respectively, for eyes-closed and eyes-open conditions., Results: The results show that, although there was no noteworthy difference between the powers of the electroencephalography frequency bands of children with subclinical hypothyroidism and healthy children during the eyes-open condition, the alpha powers of the control group were significantly higher in all electrodes during the eyes-closed condition. Furthermore, the powers of all frequency bands were observed to decrease in the eyes-open condition in the control group. However, the same net decrease was not observed in the frequency powers of children with subclinical hypothyroidism., Conclusion: According to the results of this study, children with subclinical hypothyroidism may experience information processing impairments starting in the early stages of sensory processing.

Children are exposed to various kind of non-ionizan radiation in their daily life involuntarily. The potential sensitivity of developing organism to the effects of radiofrequency (RF) signals, the higher estimated specific absorption rate (SAR) values of children and greater lifetime cumulative risk raised the scientific interest for children's vulnerability to electromagnetic fields (EMFs). In modern societies, children are being exposed to EMFs in very early ages. There are many researches in scientific literature investigating the alterations of biological parameters in living organisms after EMFs. Although the international guidelines did not report definite, convincing data about the causality, there are unignorable amount of studies indicating the increased risk of cancer, hematologic effects and cognitive impairment. Although they are less in amount; growing number of studies reveal the impacts on metabolism and endocrine function. Reproductive system and growth look like the most challenging fields. However there are also some concerns on detrimental effects of EMFs on thyroid functions, adrenal hormones, glucose homeostasis and melatonin levels. It is not easy to conduct a study investigating the effects of EMFs on a fetus or child due to ethical issues. Hence, the studies are usually performed on virtual models or animals. Although the results are conflicting and cannot be totally matched with humans; there is growing evidence to distress us about the threats of EMF on children.

Background: Ghrelin and adiponectin, which are considered to take part in the regulation of energy metabolism, have been found in breast milk and cord blood. The aims of this study were to determine ghrelin and adiponectin levels in colostrum, cord blood and maternal serum and to investigate the correlations between colostrum and cord blood levels of these peptides and the anthropometry of newborn infants and their mothers., Methods: Total ghrelin (TGHR), free ghrelin (FGHR) and adiponectin levels were studied in colostrum and the serum samples of 25 healthy lactating women and the cord blood of their healthy full-term infants., Results: No significant differences could be found among TGHR and adiponectin levels in colostrum, cord blood and maternal serum. The median FGHR level in colostrum was significantly higher than that of maternal serum and cord blood. The colostrum TGHR was negatively correlated with body mass index (BMI) and weight of the infants at birth. TGHR and FGHR levels in colostrum were found to be positively correlated with those of maternal TGHR and FGHR concentrations, respectively. Adiponectin levels in colostrum were not correlated with BMI or birthweight of the infants or BMI of the mothers., Conclusion: These findings suggest that the source of ghrelin in breast milk is probably both breast tissue itself and the serum of the mother. Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic disorder of the nervous system that primarily affects the development and growth of neural cell tissues. This disorder is characterized by the development of various tumors, including neurofibromas, neuroniomas, malignant and benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors, and meningiomas. Accompanying skin changes and bone deformities are also common in NF. However, genitourinary involvement in NF is a rare condition, and penile enlargement has been reported only in a few males with plexiform NF. We report a 6-year-old boy with chronic renal failure associated with plexiform neurofibromas of the bladder and prostatic urethra which led to urinary obstruction and macrogenitalia due to genitourinary NF.

1. Increased oxidative stress has an important role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The aim of the present study was to evaluate diabetic nephropathy by determining markers of oxidative stress and the urinary excretion of N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), albumin and to investigate the possible protective effects of in vivo melatonin on renal tubular oxidative damage in diabetic rats. 2. Twenty-six rats were randomly divided into three groups: (i) group I, control, non-diabetic rats (n = 9); (ii) group II, untreated diabetic rats (n = 8); and (iii) group III, melatonin-treated diabetic rats (n = 9). In groups II and III, diabetes developed 3 days after administration of a single dose of streptozotocin (35 mg/kg, i.p.). Thereafter, whereas the rats in group II received no treatment, rats in group III began to receive 10 mg/kg per day, i.p., melatonin for 8 weeks. Malondialdehyde (MDA), an index of lipid peroxidation, NAG and microalbumin in the urine, markers of renal tubular damage, were the parameters used for oxidative stress-induced renal injury. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), xanthine oxidase (XO) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were determined to evaluate changes in the anti-oxidant status of kidney tissue. 3. In untreated diabetic rats, urinary NAG, albumin and renal MDA levels were markedly increased compared with control rats (P < 0.0001). However, these parameters were reduced in diabetic rats by melatonin treatment (P < 0.0001). Urinary excretion of NAG was positively correlated with the microalbuminuria and renal MDA levels (r = 0.8; P < 0.0001). The SOD and XO activities in the untreated diabetic group were found to be significantly higher than those of the control group (P < 0.0001). Superoxide dismutase and XO activities decreased in melatonin-treated rats compared with untreated diabetic rats (P < 0.002 and P < 0.023, respectively). However, the decrease did reach levels seen in control rats. There were no significant differences in GSH-Px activity between the three groups. 4. Therefore, on the basis of these data, we suggest that urinary NAG, albumin excretion, XO activity and MDA levels are more valuable parameters showing the degree of renal tubular injury than classical markers of oxidative stress, including SOD and GSH-Px, in diabetic rat kidneys. Melatonin has an ameliorating effect on oxidative stress-induced renal tubular damage via its anti-oxidant properties. Thus, it may be suggested that urinary NAG excretion and microalbuminuria may be important markers showing the degree of renal changes and the success of long-term treatment of renal impairment with melatonin.

Lead poisoning is an old but persistent public health problem in developing countries. The present study investigated blood lead levels and its effects on markers of renal function and parameters of erythrocyte oxidative stress in adolescent male auto repair workers in Turkey. Blood Pb level and the ALAD index (logarithm of activated delta-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase/nonactivated delta-aminolaevulinic acid dehydratase) were measured as indicators of exposure to Pb. Markers of tubular damage urine N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG), beta2-microglobulin (beta-2 MG), creatinine (Cr), uric acid (UA), and calcium, markers of glomerular filtration blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum Cr, UA, and parameters of oxidative damage in erythrocyte were studied in 79 Pb-exposed adolescent and 71 healthy control subjects. Blood lead levels and ALAD index were found significantly higher in the study group than that of normal control group. BUN, UA level, and glomerular filtration rates were detected in normal range in the lead-exposed group. Urinary NAG excretion and calciuria were higher in the study group than in controls. Urinary excretion of NAG was positively correlated with the blood lead levels (r=0.427). There was no relationship between blood lead levels and UA or beta-2 MG in urine. Malondialdehyde and glutathione peroxidase levels were significantly elevated in lead-exposed adolescents than controls, but changes in the catalase and superoxide dismutase activities in lead-exposed adolescents did not reach statistical significance. In conclusion, chronic low-dose lead exposure seems as a cause of subtle renal impacts in adolescent workers of auto repair workshops. Lead-induced oxidative stress in erythrocytes probably contributes to these subclinical renal effects.
