We propose a scheme to achieve controllable nonreciprocal behavior in asymmetric graphene metasurfaces composed of a continuous graphene sheet and a poly crystalline silicon slab with periodic grooves of varying depths on each side. The proposed structure exhibits completely asymmetric reflection in opposite directions in the near-infrared range, which is attributed to the pronounced structural asymmetry and its accompanying nonlinear effects. The obtained nonreciprocal reflection ratio, reaching an impressive value of 21.27 dB, combined with a minimal insertion loss of just -0.76 dB, highlights the remarkable level of nonreciprocal efficiency achieved by this design compared to others in its category. More importantly, the proposed design can achieve dynamic tunability by controlling the incident field intensity and the graphene Fermi level. Our design highlights a potential means for creating miniaturized and integratable nonreciprocal optical components in reflection mode, which can promote the development of the integrated isolators, optical logic circuits, and bias-free nonreciprocal photonics.

Sarcopenia involves in the loss of muscle mass associated with aging, which is the major cause of progressive muscle weakness and deterioration in older adults. Muscle atrophy is a direct presentation of sarcopenia, and it greatly contributes to the decline in quality of life among older adults. Neuromuscular junction (NMJ) stability is the key link to maintain muscle function. Besides, the degenerative change of NMJ promotes the process of muscle atrophy in the elderly. Based on previous transcriptome sequencing and bioinformatics analyses of aged muscle, this study used the 18-month-old aged mouse model and the 6-month-old young mouse model to deliberate the role and underlying mechanisms of Cullin-3 (Cul3) in age-related muscle atrophy. The results of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and immunoblotting analysis showed that the expression of CUL3 increased in aged muscle tissue, while the expression level of postsynaptic membrane nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) decreased significantly, which manfested a negative correlation. Meanwhile, immunofluorescence demonstrated that Cul3 was highly expressed in senile muscle NMJ. The results of ubiquitin indicated that the ubiquitin level of aged muscle nAChRs was evidently increased. Co-immunoprecipitation furtherly verified the correlation between Cul3 and nAChRs. Taken together, Cul3 may mediate the ubiquitination degradation of nAChRs protein at the NMJ site in aged mice, leading to NMJ degeneration and accelerated atrophy of fast-twitch muscle fibers in aged muscle. Objective: Sarcopenia and chronic pain are prevalent among older adults, and despite numerous studies, the potential epidemiological link between the two conditions remains a topic of controversy. Therefore, we performed a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the relationship between chronic pain and sarcopenia in the elderly., Methods: EMBASE, Web of Science, PubMed, and the Cochrane Library were searched through 22 March 2023 with additional manual searches of reference lists of included studies and relevant reviews. We used a random effects model to conduct the meta-analysis and evaluated heterogeneity across studies with Cochran's Q statistic and I 2 . Subgroup analyses were conducted based on income level, diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia, and pain site., Results: 17 observational studies (33,600 participants, 49% female) were included, of which 6 articles were retrieved for narrative review. The pooled prevalence of sarcopenia and the pooled odds ratios (OR) between chronic pain and sarcopenia were extracted from the remaining 11 studies. The pooled prevalence of sarcopenia among older adults suffering from chronic pain was 0.11 (95% CI, 0.08-0.18). Our analysis revealed a statistically significant positive association between chronic pain and an increased risk of sarcopenia, yielding a pooled OR of 1.52 (95% CI, 1.31-1.76). Furthermore, our subgroup analysis demonstrated that the low-income countries group showed a stronger association (OR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.54-1.95) between chronic pain and sarcopenia than the high-income countries group (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.20-1.60)., Conclusion: Older adults with chronic pain have a significantly higher prevalence of sarcopenia and risk of developing sarcopenia compared to those without pain. These findings highlight the importance of prioritizing the assessment and early detection of chronic pain in older people, as well as implementing proactive intervention measures in clinical practice. Diabetic nephropathy (DN) affects around 40% of people with diabetes, the final outcome of which is end-stage renal disease. The deficiency of autophagy and excessive oxidative stress have been found to participate in the pathogenesis of DN. Sinensetin (SIN) has been proven to have strong antioxidant capability. However, the effect of SIN on DN has not been studied. We examined the effect of SIN on cell viability and autophagy in the podocyte cell line, MPC5 cells, treated with high glucose (HG). For in vivo studies, DN mice models were established by intraperitoneal injected with streptozotocin (40 mg/kg) for 5 consecutive days and fed with a 60% high-fat diet, and SIN was given (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg) for 8 weeks via intraperitoneal injection. The results showed that SIN could protect MPC5 cells against HG-induced damage and significantly improve the renal function of DN mice. Moreover, SIN remarkably restored the autophagy activity of MPC5 cells which was inhibited under HG conditions. Consistent with this, SIN efficiently improved autophagy in the kidney tissue of DN mice. Worldwide, diabetes and its complications have seriously affected people's quality of life and become a serious public health problem. C-peptide is not only an indicator of pancreatic β-cell function, but also a biologically active peptide that can bind to cell membrane surface signaling molecules and activate downstream signaling pathways to play antioxidant, anti-apoptotic and inflammatory roles, or regulate cellular transcription through internalization. It is complex how C-peptide is related to diabetic complications. Both deficiencies and overproduction can lead to complications, but their mechanisms of action may be different. C-peptide replacement therapy has shown beneficial effects on diabetic complications in animal models when C-peptide is deficient, but results from clinical trials have been unsatisfactory. The complex pattern of the relationship between C-peptide and diabetic chronic complications has not yet been fully understood. Chronic pain and cognitive impairment are prevalent geriatric syndromes in the population of older adults, and they are the main cause of disability in people over sixty-five years of age. As the global population continues to age, chronic pain and cognitive impairment will affect an increasing number of older adults. While numerous studies in recent years have shown that chronic pain is associated with cognitive decline, the exact mechanisms linking the two remain unclear. In this review, we aim to present the available evidence on the connection between chronic pain and cognitive impairment and to discuss the potential mechanisms by which chronic pain affects cognitive function. Theoretical investigations on the kinetics of decomposition and isomerization reactions for five types of branched pentanol radicals are carried out in this work. The M06-2X/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory was used to optimize the geometries of all reactants, transition states, and products, while the hindrance potentials for the lower frequency modes in all of the species were obtained through a relaxed scan with an increment of 10° at the M06-2X/6-31G level of theory. Single-point energies of all species were determined at the QCISD(T)/cc-pVDZ, TZ level of theories with basis set corrections from MP2/cc-pVDZ, TZ, QZ methods. The RRKM/master equation was solved to calculate the pressure- and temperature-dependent rate coefficients for all channels in the pressure range of 0.01-100 atm over 250-2000 K. Pressure and temperature-dependent branching fractions of key species produced from pentanol radicals show that most of the pentanol radical isomers tend to isomerize to alkoxy radicals via a six-membered-ring or five-membered-ring transition state at low temperatures, producing ketones or aldehydes. At higher temperatures, the β-scission reactions are the main reaction channels for the consumption of pentanol radicals. A weak pressure dependence has been found for all isomerization reactions, and it becomes more and more important as pressure increases. The pressure dependence trends are different for the β-scission reactions of different branched pentanol radicals. In part I, the results for branched pentanol radical isomers are presented in detail, while in part II the results for linear pentanol radical isomers will be discussed.

DNA self-assembly has been developed as a kind of robust signal amplification strategy, but most of reported assembly pathways are programmed to amplify signal in one direction. Herein, based on mutual-activated cascade cycle of hybridization chain reaction (HCR) and catalytic hairpin assembly (CHA), a closed cycle circuit (CCC) based DNA machine is developed for sensitive logic operation and molecular recognition. Benefiting from the synergistically accelerated signal amplification, the closed cyclic DNA machine enabled the logic computing with strong and significant output signals even at weak input signals. The typical logic operations such as OR, YES, AND, INHIBIT, NOR, and NAND gate, are conveniently and clearly executed with this DNA machine through rational design of the input and computing elements. Moreover, by integrating the target recognition module with the CCC module, the proposed DNA machine is further employed in the homogeneous detection of apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1). The precise recognition and exponential signal amplification facilitated the highly selective and sensitive detection of APE1 with limit of detection (LOD) of 7.8 × 10 -5 U mL -1 . High-rate batteries will play a vital role in future energy storage systems, yet while good progress is being made in the development of high-rate lithium-ion batteries, there is less progress with post-lithium-ion chemistry. In this study, we demonstrate that pseudohexagonal Nb 2 O 5 (TT-Nb 2 O 5 ) can offer a high specific capacity (179 mAh g -1 ∼ 0.3C), good lifetime, and an excellent rate performance (72 mAh g -1 at ∼15C) in potassium-ion batteries (KIBs), when it is composited with a highly conductive carbon framework; this is the first reported investigation of TT-Nb 2 O 5 for KIBs. Specifically, multiwalled carbon nanotubes are strongly tethered to Nb 2 O 5 via glucose-derived carbon (Nb 2 O 5 @CNT) by a one-step hydrothermal method, which results in highly conductive and porous needle-like structures. This work therefore offers a route for the scalable production of a viable KIB anode material and hence improves the feasibility of fast-charging KIBs for future applications.

Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) generators provide continuous and high-efficiency power output by utilizing local thermal emitters to convert energy from various sources to thermal radiation matching the bandgaps of photovoltaic cells. Lack of effective guidelines for thermal emission control at high temperatures, poor thermal stability, and limited fabrication scalability are the three key challenges for the practical deployment of TPV devices. Here we develop a hierarchical sequential-learning optimization framework and experimentally realize a 6″ module-scale polaritonic thermal emitter with bandwidth-controlled thermal emission as well as excellent thermal stability at 1473 K. The 300 nm bandwidth thermal emission is realized by a complex photon polariton based on the superposition of Tamm plasmon polariton and surface plasmon polariton. We experimentally achieve a spectral efficiency of 65.6% (wavelength range of 0.4-8 μm) with statistical deviation less than 4% over the 6″ emitter, demonstrating industrial-level reliability for module-scale TPV applications.

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have become one of the promising candidates for electrochemical energy storage that can provide low-cost and high-performance advantages. The poor cyclability and rate capability of PIBs are due to the intensive structural change of electrode materials during battery operation. Carbon-based materials as anodes have been successfully commercialized in lithium- and sodium-ion batteries but is still struggling in potassium-ion battery field. This work conducts structural engineering strategy to induce anionic defects within the carbon structures to boost the kinetics of PIBs anodes. The carbon framework provides a strong and stable structure to accommodate the volume variation of materials during cycling, and the further phosphorus doping modification is shown to enhance the rate capability. This is found due to the change of the pore size distribution, electronic structures, and hence charge storage mechanism. The optimized electrode in this work shows a high capacity of 175 mAh g -1 at a current density of 0.2 A g -1 and the enhancement of rate performance as the PIB anode (60% capacity retention with the current density increase of 50 times). Objective: Prior studies have shown that plaque inflammation on FDG-PET and the symptomatic carotid atheroma inflammation lumen-stenosis (SCAIL) score were associated with recurrent ischemic events, but the findings have thus far not been widely validated. Therefore, we aimed to validate the findings of prior studies., Methods: A single-center prospective cohort study that recruited patients with (1) recent TIA or ischemic stroke within the past 30 days, (2) ipsilateral carotid artery stenosis of ≥50%, and (3) were not considered for early carotid revascularization. The (1) maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of the symptomatic carotid plaque, (2) the SCAIL score, and (3) stenosis severity of the symptomatic carotid artery were measured for all patients. The outcomes were (1) a 90-day ipsilateral ischemic stroke and (2) a 90-day ipsilateral symptomatic TIA or major adverse cardiovascular event (MACE)., Results: Among the 131 patients included in the study, the commonest cardiovascular risk factor was hypertension (95 patients, 72.5%), followed by diabetes mellitus (77 patients, 58.8%) and being a current smoker (64 patients, 48.9%). The median (IQR) duration between the index cerebral ischemic event and recruitment to the study was 1 (0, 2.5) days. The median (IQR) duration between the index cerebral ischemic event and FDG-PET was 5 (4, 7) days. A total of 14 (10.7%) patients had a 90-day stroke, and 41 (31.3%) patients had a 90-day TIA or MACE. On comparison of the predictive performances of the SCAIL score and SUVmax, SUVmax was found to be superior to the SCAIL score for predicting both 90-day ipsilateral ischemic stroke (AUC: SCAIL = 0.79, SUVmax = 0.92; p < 0.001; 95% CI = 0.072, 0.229) and 90-day TIA or MACE (AUC: SCAIL = 0.76, SUVmax = 0.84; p = 0.009; 95% CI = 0.020, 0.143)., Conclusion: Plaque inflammation as quantified on FDG-PET may serve as a reliable biomarker for risk stratification among patients with ECAD and recent TIA or ischemic stroke. Leptospirosis is an important zoonosis that is caused by pathogenic Leptospira, which is considered to be a re-emerging infectious disease in many countries. Rodents are the most important reservoirs for both human and animal infection. An epidemiological survey of pathogenic Leptospira in rodents is important for the prevention and control of leptospirosis. In this study, a total of 964 rodents were captured from six cities in Hubei Province, and two pathogenic Leptospira species (L. interrogans and L. borgpetersenii) were detected using nested PCR with an overall prevalence of 4.8%. L. interrogans was distributed in five sampling sites, which may be the dominant species of pathogenic Leptospira in Hubei Province. In addition, Rattus norvegicus showed a relatively high infection rate, which may play an important role in the transmission and infection of pathogenic Leptospira. This study reveals the prevalence of pathogenic Leptospira in wild rodents in Hubei Province, suggesting that the risk of leptospirosis infection in Hubei Province still exists.

Herein, we present a freestanding and flexible 3D nanocomposite made of polyhedral spherical FeCoS 2 and nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanofibers (FeCoS 2 @N-HCNFs) that is synthesized through coaxial electrospinning, high-temperature calcination, and a facile solvothermal process. As a binder-free anode composite for potassium-ion batteries (PIBs), FeCoS 2 @N-HCNF presents a high specific discharge capacity on the first lap (701.2 mA h g -1 at 100 mA g -1 ) and superior cycling stability (132.6 mA h g -1 at 3200 mA g -1 after 600 cycles). The impressive electrochemical performance can be ascribed to the unique 3D structure, such as the enormous specific surface area of the mesoporous structure beneficial for K + transfer, the three-dimensional hollow carbon nanofiber scaffold enhances the structural stability, and polyhedral spherical FeCoS 2 improves the overall specific capacity. According to the above description, the FeCoS 2 @N-HCNF anode is a promising candidate for advanced potassium-ion batteries.

Rhipicephalus microplus is considered to be the most important tick infesting cattle, buffalo, horse, goats as well as other animals. They transmit diseases between domestic animals and act as vectors of a variety of zoonotic pathogens. Although pathogens harbored by R. microplus have been extensively studied, the Rickettsiales pathogens vectored by R. microplus in some areas of China remained largely unexplored. From August to October 2020, a total of 291 R. microplus ticks were collected from goats and cattle in three Southern China provinces, Guangxi (n = 138), Sichuan (n = 120) and Hubei (n = 33) provinces. Phylogenetic analysis based on COI gene sequences shows that these ticks are divided into three distinct clades, indicating the remarkable genetic diversity of R. microplus ticks in China. These samples were subsequently screened for the presence of Rickettsia, Anaplasma and Ehrlichia using conventional PCR and sequencing. Subsequently, five bacterial species were identified. Out of the 120 tick DNA samples from Sichuan province, 35.83% (43/120) were positive for Rickettsia sp. belonging to spotted fever group (SFG), 12.50% (15/120) were positive for Anaplasma marginale and 0.83% (1/120) was identified as A. platys. From the 138 DNA samples from Guangxi province, an Ehrlichia canis-like and Rickettsia sp. were detected, with a positive rate of 11.59% (16/138) and 2.17% (3/138), respectively. A. capra DNA was detected in 4 out of 33 (12.12%) samples from Hubei province. Notably, the 16S, gltA and groEL sequences of the E. canis-like are closely related to the E. canis strain previously identified from China, and form a distinct cluster in the phylogenetic trees. Collectively, our results expand the knowledge on tick-borne Rickettsiales pathogens in China. Because the state of engorgement of ticks was not recorded, it is not clear at this stage whether these pathogens are infecting the ticks or are simply present in the blood meal. Given the public health significance of SFG Rickettsia, A. capra, A. platys and E. canis, a thorough investigation of the diversity and presence of pathogens in R. microplus in areas with tick-associated diseases are needed., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier GmbH. Mosquitoes are the most important vectors carrying significant numbers of human pathogens. Recent studies implicated that mosquitoes play an important role in circulation and transmission of multiple Rickettsia species. In this study, Rickettsia bellii was identified in four mosquito species (Culex pipiens, C. tritaeniorhynchus, Aedes albopictus, and Anopheles sinensis) collected from three Eastern China provinces during 2019-2020. Rickettsia bellii was detected in 37.50 and 26.32% of the C. pipiens pools from Beijing and Jiangsu province, respectively. In C. tritaeniorhynchus and An. sinensis from Shandong, the infection rate is 20.00 and 6.25%, respectively. Additionally, three Ae. albopictus pools (3/42, 7.14%) from Beijing were also detected positive for R. bellii. Genetic and phylogenetic analysis on 16S, gltA, and groEL genes indicates that sequences from all these strains are highly homologous and closely related to other R. bellii strains. This is the first report that Ae. albopictus and C. tritaeniorhynchus harbor R. bellii. The wide host range and high infection rate in certain areas may dramatically increase the exposure of R. bellii to human and other vertebrates. Background and Rationale: Uncertainty persists over the optimal management of blood pressure (BP) in the early phase of acute ischemic stroke (AIS). This study aims to determine the safety and effects of intensive BP lowering on cerebral blood flow (CBF) and functional in AIS patients treated with intravenous thrombolysis., Methods: In a randomized controlled trial, 54 thrombolysed AIS patients with a systolic BP of 160 to 180 mm Hg will be randomized to early intensive BP lowering (systolic target range 140-160 mm Hg) or guideline-based BP management (systolic range 160-180 mm Hg) during first 72-hours using primarily intravenous labetalol. We hypothesize that early intensive BP lowering will not reduce CBF by 20% and/or increase the volume of hypoperfused tissue by >20% on computed tomographic perfusion. Clinical outcome will be assessed using a dichotomized modified Rankin scale (scores 0-1 as excellent outcome vs scores 2-6 as dead or dependent) at 90 days. Other outcome would be symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage. The trial is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03443596., Conclusion: This randomized study will provide important information about the physiological effects of BP reduction on cerebral perfusion after intravenous thrombolysis in AIS.

In this study, we compared the efficacies and adverse effects of quinine plus antibiotics and other anti-malaria drugs on treating uncomplicated falciparum malaria. By systematically searching the major databases PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, 14 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including 1996 cases were identified. Then, we performed a systematic review and cumulative meta-analysis on these data. The primary outcome of these treatments was parasite failure at day 28. There was no significant difference between quinine plus antibiotic therapy (QACT) and artemisinin-based therapies (odds ratio (OR) 0.69, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.28 to 1.71) or non-artemisinin-based therapies except quinine monotherapy and chloroquine monotherapy (OR 0.56, 95 % CI 0.18 to 1.74). The secondary outcome was the adverse effects within 28 days, including nausea, dizziness, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and tinnitus. QACT significantly increased the risk of tinnitus compared with artemisinin-based therapies (OR 111.65, 95 % CI 12.63 to 986.87) and non-artemisinin-based therapies (OR 48.16, 95 % CI 16.23 to 142.92). Vomiting was more frequently reported in QACT compared with non-artemisinin-based therapies (OR 2.02, 95 % CI 1.14 to 3.56). This meta-analysis suggests that almost all regimens have equivalent treatment effect at the 28th day. However, the patients with QACT had a higher chance to suffer from vomiting and tinnitus. Therefore, QACT does not have significant advantage on treating uncomplicated falciparum malaria.
