The coatings included: a solid solution of MgO and ZrO2; a true oxide compound, CaZrO3; and two single oxides, Gd2O3 and Y2O3. The compound oxides were applied to specially cleaned ATJ grade graphite-mold hollowcylinder inserts by an oxy-acetylene flame spray method, and the single oxides were applied in similar inserts by a plasma spray technique. The MgO, ZrO3 and CaZrO3 coatings were considered to be insufficiently resistant under casting conditions to qualify as satisfactory barrier coatings. The rare earth oxide Gd2O3 was found to be resistant to molten titanium during casting and to provide a good barrier between the graphite mold substrate and the cast metal, with no significant increases in either oxygen or carbon content. The oxide Y2O3 was found to have the best characteristics as a barrier coating. This oxide did not appear to be wetted by the molten metal cast against it nor to introduce any significant amounts of contaminants into the case metal. The barrier coatings were not effective in altering the high heat extraction capability of the graphite substrate and thus did not provide any improvement in solidification center line shrinkage. Current hypotheses were reviewed relative to the contribution of radiant energy to heat transfer in BeO. The problem of radiant energy transmission in BeO was explored by exposing simultaneously, two types of BeO sample materials heated from 1000 to 2000 C, to pulses of radiant energy of known intensity. The effects were monitored with potentiometer and oscilloscope instruments from emf signals obtained from thermocouple detectors. Translucent thin-walled BeO tube material, heated from 1000 to 2000 C, exhibited no sustained transmission of radiant energy when exposed to radiant energy pulses of high intensity. An initial effect from the applied incident radiant energy was detected, however, which was interpreted to be due to the exposed surface of the BeO reaching a high temperature so rapidly that, momentarily, little heat was generated in the mass of the material and no immediate temperature rise occurred in the heated BeO. It was postulated that during this short interval incident radiant energy was transferred in the BeO by a process involving simultaneous emission and absorption of radiant energy in depth. As soon as the BeO temperature began to rise, this process of radiant energy transfer appeared to be replaced by the normal process of radiant energy absorption, conversion to heat, and reradiation. BeO heated above 1800C exhibited no tendency toward an initial rapid transfer of radiant energy. (Author)

We present the first results from the largest deep extragalactic mm-wavelength survey undertaken to date. These results are derived from maps covering over 0.7 deg2, made at λ= 1.1 mm, using the AzTEC continuum camera mounted on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The maps were made in the two fields originally targeted at λ= 850 μm with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) in the SCUBA Half-Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) project, namely the Lockman Hole East (mapped to a depth of 0.9–1.3 mJy rms) and the Subaru/XMM–Newton Deep Field (mapped to a depth of 1.0–1.7 mJy rms). The wealth of existing and forthcoming deep multifrequency data in these two fields will allow the bright mm source population revealed by these new wide-area 1.1 mm images to be explored in detail in subsequent papers. Here, we present the maps themselves, a catalogue of 114 high-significance submillimetre galaxy detections, and a thorough statistical analysis leading to the most robust determination to date of the 1.1 mm source number counts. These new maps, covering an area nearly three times greater than the SCUBA SHADES maps, currently provide the largest sample of cosmological volumes of the high-redshift Universe in the mm or sub-mm. Through careful comparison, we find that both the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) and the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) North fields, also imaged with AzTEC, contain an excess of mm sources over the new 1.1 mm source-count baseline established here. In particular, our new AzTEC/SHADES results indicate that very luminous high-redshift dust enshrouded starbursts (S1.1mm > 3 mJy) are 25–50 per cent less common than would have been inferred from these smaller surveys, thus highlighting the potential roles of cosmic variance and clustering in such measurements. We present a catalogue of ∼3000 submillimetre sources detected (≥3.5σ) at 850 μm over ∼5 deg2 surveyed as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS). This is the largest survey of its kind at 850 μm, increasing the sample size of 850 μm selected submillimetre galaxies by an order of magnitude. The wide 850 μm survey component of S2CLS covers the extragalactic fields: UKIDSS-UDS, COSMOS, Akari-NEP, Extended Groth Strip, Lockman Hole North, SSA22 and GOODS-North. The average 1σ depth of S2CLS is 1.2 mJy beam-1, approaching the SCUBA-2 850 μm confusion limit, which we determine to be σc ≈ 0.8 mJy beam-1. We measure the 850 μm number counts, reducing the Poisson errors on the differential counts to approximately 4 per cent at S850 ≈ 3 mJy. With several independent fields, we investigate field-to-field variance, finding that the number counts on 0.5°–1° scales are generally within 50 per cent of the S2CLS mean for S850 > 3 mJy, with scatter consistent with the Poisson and estimated cosmic variance uncertainties, although there is a marginal (2σ) density enhancement in GOODS-North. The observed counts are in reasonable agreement with recent phenomenological and semi-analytic models, although determining the shape of the faint-end slope (S850 < 3 mJy) remains a key test. The large solid angle of S2CLS allows us to measure the bright-end counts: at S850 > 10 mJy there are approximately 10 sources per square degree, and we detect the distinctive up-turn in the number counts indicative of the detection of local sources of 850 μm emission, and strongly lensed high-redshift galaxies. All calibrated maps and the catalogue are made publicly available.
