Magnetic properties of finite zigzag carbon nanotubes are studied within the tight-binding model. The spin–B interaction (Zeeman splitting) causes the metal–semiconductor transition and thus produces a large persistent current (J) with special jump structures. This effect makes all zigzag carbon nanotubes exhibit a gigantic paramagnetism. It also destroys the periodicity of magnetic properties. The dependence on the magnetic flux, the length (w), the radius (r), the temperature (T), and the chirality (zigzag or armchair) is strong. The amplitude of J quickly decreases with increasing of (w,r,T). Zigzag carbon nanotubes differ significantly from armchair carbon nanotubes (or infinite zigzag carbon nanotubes) in features such as magnetic susceptibility and in special structures in J. The annealing behavior of a severely plastically deformed (SPD) aluminum, which was produced by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE), was studied in the present work. The SPD structure is quite stable at temperatures below 523 K. As the annealing temperature increases, the grain growth rate exhibits a discontinuous change in the range of 548–573 K. The activation energy at lower annealing temperatures (<548 K) is 49 kJ/mol, while at higher temperatures (>573 K); it is 85 kJ/mol, which is close to the value for grain boundary diffusion in aluminum. The microstructures after annealing have been characterized quantitatively by the parameters including grain shape, grain size distribution, boundary misorientation and global texture. It is suggested that the annealing behavior of this SPD aluminum may be described as a continuous process of (sub)grain coarsening, or continuous recrystallization. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The microstructure of copper developed by equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) to a strain ∼8 was investigated using different strain path and temperature. Two different strain paths were obtained by rotating the billets through 90° (route BC) or 180° (route C) between each pass. In general, the microstructure should be characterized as a cold-worked structure with varied degree of recrystallization depending on the processing route and temperature. At room temperature, both routes produced similar microstructure except the formation of recrystallized grains by route BC. By the use of route BC, the volume fraction and size of recrystallized grains were found to increase with increasing deformation temperature, while the size of recrystallized grains showed considerable increase above 150 °C. Comparing with aluminum deformed by ECAE at similar homologous temperature (∼0.32Tm), the most distinct difference in the microstructure development is the presence of dynamic recrystallization in copper. A commercial 5052 aluminum alloy was processed by equal channel angular extrusion at 423 K to a strain of ∼8. The as-extruded microstructure is quite uniform, which can be characterized as a mixture of elongated and equiaxed subgrains with submicrometer size and high misorientations. In static annealing, the as-extruded structure is quite stable at 423 K and shows slow coarsening at 473 K. The microstructure resulted from more ECAE passes (higher strain) is more readily to develop a uniform structure of equiaxed grains in static annealing. Very high strength (394 MPa yield stress and 421 MPa ultimate tensile strength) and reasonable ductility (10.5% tensile elongation) can be obtained in this non-heat treatable aluminum alloy. The high strength can be related to the structure of submicron-sized subgrains (grains). To increase the strain from 4 to 8 is beneficial for producing finer structure and higher strength. Alkali-heat treatment (AHT) is an effective surface treatment technology for improving the bioactivity of medical metal biomaterials. However, the effects of AHT on the biocompatibility of the original material are not yet fully clear. Accordingly, in the present study, tantalum (Ta) coatings are deposited on Ti6Al4V substrates using a vacuum plasma spraying (VPS) technique and the coatings are then processed using either alkali treatment (AT) or AHT using 0.5 M and 1.0 M NaOH aqueous solution. In vitro bioactivity tests are performed in simulated body fluid for 3~14 days. It is shown that the surface of the AHT sample treated with 0.5 M NaOH (0.5 M AHT) has excellent bioactivity, irrespective of whether or not ultrasonic cleaning (UC) is performed following the heat treatment process. The surface of the AHT sample processed with 1.0 M NaOH (1.0 M AHT) contains a large number of irregular block-shaped compounds, which hinder the bioactivity of the coating. However, following UC treatment, the block-shaped compounds are removed, and the bioactivity of the AHT-UC sample is similar to that of the 0.5 M AHT sample. In in vitro biocompatibility tests for 1–7 days, the Ta coating and 0.5 M AHT-UC coating exhibited significantly better cellular attachment, growth, spreading, and viability of osteoblast-like osteosarcoma MG-63 cells than the 1.0 M AHT-UC coating. It is speculated that this is due to the presence of excess amorphous sodium tantalate on the surface of the 1.0 M AHT-UC coating. Overall, the present results show that AHT treatment performed with an appropriate NaOH concentration yields a significant improvement in both the bioactivity and the biocompatibility of VPS Ta coatings. • VPS Ta-coatings treated with AH, AHT and AHT-UC using 0.5 M NaOH have excellent in vitro bioactivity. • For 1.0 M NaOH, the VPS Ta-coatings treated with AHT-UC alone have excellent in vitro bioactivity. • The cell density in the 0.5 M AHT-UC coating was about 6 times higher than the 1.0 M AHT-UC coating. • VPS Ta-coatings on Ti6Al4V substrates have good potential for implant applications. Abstract: The effects of electrode on the resistive switching in Nd0.7Ca0.3MnO3(NCMO)/YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) heterostructure are investigated at room temperature. For Cu/NCMO/YBCO, resistance can be switched on-and-off from a high- to low-resistance state at a steady ratio of 25% with a pulsed-voltage of ±3V. On the other hand, a giant resistance-change as large as 1350% is observed with ±5V for Ag/NCMO/YBCO with a fast decay down to 550%. Our experimental results show clear evidences that the nature of interfaces can be modified by the electric field and it dictates the resistive switching behavior of these heterostructure devices, which are the potential candidates for the random access memory. A search is described for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons, one of which has an internal conversion to a muon or an electron pair (ℓℓγ). The analysis is performed using proton-proton collision data recorded with the CMS detector at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1. The events selected have an opposite-sign muon or electron pair and a high transverse momentum photon. No excess above background has been found in the three-body invariant mass range 120

Co/Mo bilayered films have been successfully grown on MgO(100) and MgO(110) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. According to the reflection high energy electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction measurements the crystal structure of the film depends on the orientation of the buffer and substrate. The growth of biaxial Co(112~0)/Mo(100) on MgO(100) and of uniaxial Co(11~00)/Mo(211) on MgO(110) substrates has been confirmed. The anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) is strongly influenced by the Co orientation which is altered by growth on Mo/MgO(100) and MgO(110). In Co(112~0)/Mo(100) on MgO(110) AMR is isotropic for all in-plane fields. However, for Co(11~00)/Mo(211) on MgO(110) we observed enhancement of AMR along the easy axis at 10 K. 265. A study of South Asian monsoon convection and tropical upper easterly jet during northern summer 1991

- Abstract
This work studies the 1991 northern summer monsoon over India and surrounding areas using Japanese (GMS) and Indian (INSAT) geostationary satellite data, the ECMWF objective re-analysis, and the NMC sea surface temperature analysis. Monthly and weekly mean fields are first used to examine the development of the monsoon over the entire domain and to identify the timing of the onset over India. Latent heat fluxes are shown to be important in the monsoon development process. The relationship between the synoptic variations of a convective index derived from satellite data and the upper tropospheric easterly jet show two possible effects of cumulus convection on the easterly jet. The first is a forcing of the jet maximum near southern India when convection flares up to the north in the monsoon trough. This is believed to be the result of the Coriolis acceleration of the southward outflow of the local Hadley cell. The second is a damping of the upper jet by cumulus momentum transport that occurs at the same location as the jet maximum. 266. South China Sea warm-core and cold-core eddies detected from the Navy's Master Oceanographic Observation Data Set (MOODS)

- Abstract
A South China Sea warm core eddy with sea surface temperatures (SST) higher than 29.5 C, recently reported by Chu and Chang (1995), appears in the central South China Sea (west of Luzon Island) in boreal spring, and strengthens until the onset of the summer monsoon (mid-May), then weakens and disappears at the end of May. Although its size and intensity varies, the warm core eddy releases large moisture and heat fluxes into the atmosphere and in turn affects the monsoon circulation. The transient features and interannual variabilities of the warm core eddy have not yet been studied. In this study we use 189,059 temperature profiles from the U.S. Navy's Master Oceanographic Observation Data Set (MOODS) to investigate the eddy features. We use Optimal Interpolation to create a ten-day interval synoptic data set for 1964-84 on a 0.5 x 1 deg. grid (finer resolution in zonal direction) from the MOODS SST data. Then, we formulate an Emprical Orthogonal Functions (EOF) analysis. The first EOF mode accounts for 35.5% of the variance and is characterized by a field which is similar to the mean field. The second EOF mode accounts for 21.4% of the variance and is characterized by a meso-scale eddy (1l6 - 1l9 E, 16 - 19 N) to the west of Luzon Island. The size of the eddy is around 100,000 km2. The time series of EOF2 behave differently between El Niflo and non-El Niflo years: a warm-core eddy often appears during the non- El Niflo years, and a cold-core eddy usually exists during the El Niflo years. 267. A 15-year climatology of synoptical disturbance over tropical northwestern Pacific during summer

- Abstract
This work investigated the sumertime northwestward propagating waves over the tropical western North Pacific and their relationship with tropical cyclone activities. The 15-season (May-October 1974-1988) Navy tropical global band data were separated into three groups according to the degree of organization in the multiple-set canonical correlation (MCC) modes that were computed from the surface v wind. Groups A (6 seasons) and B (5 seasons) showed orderly large-scale propagating patterns at the surface and 700 hPa with an average period of 8 days and a wavelength of about 2500-3000 km. The structure is robust whether the MCC analysis was performed on each of the seasons individually or on groups of years. A strong in-phase relationship between the low-level disturbance cyclonic cells and tropical cyclone centers was found. Composite analysis of all cases in these two groups whose MCC mode 1 amplitude exceeded 1.5 m/s showed organized northwestward propagating divergence/convergence patterns at 200 hPa. Group C (4 seasons) shows the least organized structure, with a large difference between MCC modes obtained from the entire group and those from each individual season. In this study we used data analyzed by the Navy Operational Global Analysis and Prediction System to study the intraseasonal oscillations other than Madden and Julian oscillation over the tropical western Pacific and eastern Indian ocean. The period of study is May-September of 1989, 1990 and 1991. Multiple-set canonical correlation (MCC), single point correlation and composite analyses were used to determine the structure of the disturbances. The results show that MCC mode#l describes both the seasonal change and a near 20 day oscillation with a zonal half-wavelength around 3000-4000 km. The single point correlation and composites indicate that these oscillations are in gradient wind balance, transporting moisture northward, having upper level divergence over a surface low and a warm-core structure. The seasonal change composite shows a quasi-stationary oscillation with May and June corresponding to the negative phase of MCC mode#l, and August corresponding to the positive phase of MCC mode#l. This thesis contains a study of the interannual and intraannual tropical atmospheric circulations for the Northern Hemisphere summer seasons of IQTU, 1975 and 1976 using satellite observations of infrared radiation and albedo in conjunction with parameters available from conventional 200 mb data. The 200 mb flow regimes are contrasted for the three seasons and power spectra and cross-spectral analysis are used to find significant correlations between the parameters from time series generated within a given area and between the areas. These areas were picked for each parameter to represent regions of maxim.um time-averaged values. The anomalously warm sea surface temperatures in 1976 (Bepristis, 1977) occurred in conjunction with major circulation changes paralleling Bjerknes' (1959) hypothesis and the differences in flow regimes between a normal and dry monsoon season are in general agreement with Kanamitsu and Krishnamurti (1978). Significant correlations were found to exist between parameters within the eastern Pacific and western Pacific and also between these two regions . The Mei-Yu front is a quasi-stationary belt of heavy precipitation imbedded in the summer monsoon trough over East Asia. This work used a two dimensional frontogenesis model to study the Mei-Yu front, especially its associated low-level jet (LLJ) which often occurs during intense convection. Several numerical experiments were carried out to simulate the quasi-steady frontal structures in different environments. The results resemble many observed features, such as the stronger temperature and moisture gradients in the midlatitude fronts and the stronger horizontal shear and LLJ in the subtropical fronts. The LLJ is most conspicuous in the subtropical simulation when high humidity and surface fluxes are included. The results further suggest that the LLJ is developed through the Coriolis torque that is exerted by the low-level poleward branch of a "reversed Hadley cell" equatorward of the front. This thermally direct cell is different from the normal cross-frontal secondary circulation. In order to obtain further insight into the structure and properties of easterly waves in the tropical western Pacific, subjectively digitized satellite data for the latter half of the years 1972 and 1973, which possess respectively warm and cold sea-surface temperature anomalies, are analyzed using a compositing technique to obtain composites of percentage convective cloud cover during wave passage. The composites are then compared to composites of temperature, relative humidity and meridional winds. The results, in certain ways, are in agreement with those obtained previously by spectral analysis in the proposed structural tilt of the waves. Significant new results are also obtained. The effects of the local sea-surface temperature influence are most important only for the convective activity organized by the waves. On the other hand, the timemean cloudiness is a factor of the larger-scale sea-surface temperature gradient and the associated Walker circulation. The structure of barotropically unstable disturbances in the tropics was examined with a two-level quasi-geostrophic model. The forecast equations were linearized and non-dimensionalized and the most unstable mode was found numerically by use of the initial value technique. The wind profile U(j) = a(j)U(o) sech² (y/L) was used. Simple CISK type heating was introduced to determine its effects on the growth of the waves. The jet wind profile was more unstable with easterly flow than westerly flow when no heating or friction was present. When the jet profile was present only at the upper level, the ratio of the disturbance amplitude at the lower level to the disturbance amplitude at the upper level decreased toward the equator.
