Abstract: The demonstrated benefits of cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) in reducing mortality and hospitalizations for heart failure, improving NYHA functional class and inducing reverse remodeling have led to its increasing use in clinical practice. However, its potential contribution to complex ventricular arrhythmias is controversial. We present the case of a female patient with valvular heart failure and severe systolic dysfunction, in NYHA class III and under optimal medical therapy, without previous documented ventricular arrhythmias. After implantation of a CRT defibrillator, she suffered an arrhythmic storm with multiple episodes of monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT), requiring 12 shocks. Subsequently, a pattern of ventricular bigeminy was observed, as well as reproducible VT runs induced by biventricular pacing.Since no other vein of the coronary sinus system was accessible, it was decided to implant an epicardial lead to stimulate the left ventricle, positioned in the left ventricular mid‐lateral wall. No arrhythmias were detected in the following six months. This case highlights the possible proarrhythmic effect of biventricular pacing with a left ventricular lead positioned in the coronary sinus venous system. Funding Acknowledgements Type of funding sources: None. Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) through machine learning (ML) refers to the simulation of human intelligence with the capacity for achieving goals within computers. In electrophysiology, ML has many applications in electrocardiography, intracardiac mapping and cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). Remote monitoring (RM) of patients equipped with CIEDs associates the analysis of event reports and calendar-based remote follow-ups (FU). ML applications have allowed for risk stratification, improved arrhythmia localisation and streamlined remote monitoring which may significantly reduce the workload faced by electrophysiologists. Aim To develop a system that automates cardiac implantable electronic devices remote follow-up. Methods and Results We created a Java software application, that uses the latest optical character recognition techniques combined with artificial intelligence and natural language processing to extract information from PDF reports of RM of CIEDs from different manufacturers. The current version is HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) complaint and runs on local computers only. Using the current system, we were able to run and extract data from 30 remote follow-up PDF reports of Cardiac Implantable Defibrillators (ICDs) and Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy with Defibrillator (CRT-Ds). Time taken from data extraction to conversion of all 30 device PDFs was under 5 minutes. Process and data extracted are presented in the figure below. (Figure 1) Conclusion This machine learning algorithm proved that it is possible to facilitate and automate remote follow-up of cardiac implantable electronic devices. In a near future this will allow to us to efficiently increase productivity, by speeding and facilitating interpretation of remote device follow-ups, leading to improvements in patientcare and precision cardiovascular medicine. Furthermore, in the current and future pandemics it may help prevent unnecessary in-person medical visits, avoiding additional, unnecessary strain on an already overburdened and overwhelmed healthcare system, and saving costs. We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R 3 B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σ Δ E / Δ E of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Together with an elaborate particle-tracking system, the full identification of relativistic ions from hydrogen up to uranium in mass and nuclear charge is possible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigated the effect of acute cold exposure, leptin, and the somatostatin analog octreotide (OCT) on thyroid type I (D1) and II (D2) deiodinase activities. Microsomal D1 and D2 activities were measured by the release of [sup.125]I from [sup.125]I-reverse triiodothyronine ([rT.sub.3]) under different assay conditions. Rats exposed to 4[degrees]C (15, 30, 60, and 120 rain) showed progressive reduction in thyroidal D1 and D2, reaching ~40% at 2 h (P < 0.05) despite increased circulating TSH (P < 0,05) associated with the higher thyroid D1 and D2 in hypothyroid rats. A single injection of leptin (8 [micro]g/100 g body wt sc) induced increased thyroid and liver D1 (P < 0.05), but not thyroid D2, activities at 30 and 120 min, independently of the serum TSH rise shown only at 2 h. OCT (1 [micro]g/kg body wt sc) increased D1 and D2 activity significantly 24 h after a single injection, with no changes in serum TSH. Therefore, leptin and somatostatin are potential physiological upregulators of thyroid deiodinases, and their low secretion during acute cold exposure may be a potential mechanism contributing to cold-induced reduction in thyroid deiodinase activity. hypothyroidism; liver 5'-deiodinase; thyroid hormone

The effect of light on biomass and fucoxanthin (Fx) productivities was studied in two microalgae, Tisochrysis lutea and Phaeodactylum tricornutum. High and low biomass concentrations (1.1 and 0.4 g L−1) were tested in outdoor pilot‐scale flat‐panel photobioreactors at semi‐continuous cultivation mode. Fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with chemometric modeling was used to develop prediction models for Fx content and for biomass concentration to be applied for both microalgae species. Prediction models showed high R 2 for cell concentration (.93) and Fx content (.77). Biomass productivity was lower for high biomass concentration than low biomass concentration, for both microalgae (1.1 g L−1: 75.66 and 98.14 mg L−1 d−1, for T. lutea and P. tricornutum, respectively; 0.4 g L−1: 129.9 and 158.47 mg L−1 d−1, T. lutea and P. tricornutum). The same trend was observed in Fx productivity (1.1 g L−1: 1.14 and 1.41 mg L−1 d−1, T. lutea and P. tricornutum; 0.4 g L−1: 2.09 and 1.73 mg L−1 d−1, T. lutea and P. tricornutum). These results show that biomass and Fx productivities can be set by controlling biomass concentration under outdoor conditions and can be predicted using fluorescence spectroscopy. This monitoring tool opens new possibilities for online process control and optimization., Graphical abstract Biomass and fucoxanthin outdoor production and monitoring with brown microalgae

The environmental, economic, and social impact of food value chains have attracted the attention of a wide range of stakeholders. However, only a few studies have focused on sustainability in the food industry in terms of social responsibility from a developing country perspective. Indeed, existing analysis has not adequately addressed the role of social responsibility on consumers’ preferences and purchasing decision. This paper intends to shed light on this nexus through qualitative research relying on in-depth interviews with decision-makers along the food value chain. Results suggest that consumers are sensitive to social abuse practices, but they face difficulties to access information in order to inform their decisions. Therefore, a higher investment in transparency instead of certifications is recommendable, as sometimes companies could be considered greenwashing. In this regard a number of opinion leaders, including retailers and wholesalers, unions, media, and governments, can play a key role to enhance awareness through information flows.

- Abstract
3 pages, 1 figure, [EN] During the 20th and 21st centuries, the growing demand for marine resources by Mediterranean countries has led to a gradual increase in fishing pressure. As a result, both coastal and continental Mediterranean waters have suffered from the impacts of trawling and, to a lesser extent, of artisanal fishing with longlines, trammel nets and other minor fishing gear (Grinyó et al. 2021, Demestre et al. 2021). Following the indications proposed by the European Marine Strategy, a set of particularly vulnerable areas has begun to be delimited, and protection measures are to be implemented for their conservation (Law 41/2010, of 29 December, on marine protection; https://www.boe.es/eli/s/l/2010/12/29/41). These areas seek to develop integrated policies to promote sustainable fishing practices that prevent the over-exploitation of natural resources while at the same time mitigating the impacts that may occur on benthic habitats, which are those found directly on the seafloor. Although fisher’s gilds are still operative in most marine protected areas, only a minority of scientific studies and management plans have integrated the experience and knowledge of fishers in such areas. This scant involvement of fishers in drawing up the management measures often results in their opposition to them, as well as a lack of motivation regarding proposals for a more sustaniable explotation and preservation of the marine environment. This work aimed to select a Tisochrysis lutea phenotype with higher biomass and fucoxanthin productivities using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). A novel phenotype was obtained after 2 rounds of selection, based on high-fucoxanthin fluorescence. The resulting phenotype forms cell aggregates, has no flagella, and was stable after 15 months. Optimal temperature (30 ◦C) and light (300 μmol m 2 s 1) were obtained at laboratory scale, identical to the original strain. The biomass productivity was higher than the original strain: 1.9× at laboratory scale (0.4 L), and 4.5× under outdoor conditions (190 L). Moreover, compared to the original strain, the productivity of fucoxanthin increased 1.6–3.1× and docosahexaenoic acid 1.5–1.9×. These are the highest ever reported outdoor productivities, obtained with a robust new phenotype from a T. lutea monoculture isolated with FACS without genetic manipulation. The resulting phenotype shows high potential for industrial production.

- Abstract
Simulation results for light transport in long tapered CsI(Tl) crystals using look-up tables (LUTs) are presented. The LUTs were derived from the topography of a polished and a lapped surface of a CsI(Tl) crystal measured with atomic force microscopy. Simulations with different combinations of polished and lapped surfaces were performed, to extract the non-uniformity of light collection depending on the interaction point, and compared to experimental results. The simulations reproduce the general trend given by the measurements, and show that more homogeneous light collection is attained when all lateral sides of the crystal are lapped. For the lapped crystal the simulation model is most sensitive to the reflectivity of the enhanced specular reflector (ESR) foil surrounding the crystal, which is one of several properties influencing the light transport examined in this study. The sensitivity of the light-output non-uniformity to variations in the absorption length observed in a batch of CsI(Tl) crystals in a previous study is also discussed. Residual differences between the simulation and the measurements can potentially be attributed to the scattering of scintillation photons inside the materials used. Additional measurements to further advance the construction of the simulation model are suggested.

- Abstract
Cold-water gorgonians dwelling on the continental shelf are a common by-catch of bottom-contact fishing practices. Given the slow growth and limited recruitment of cold-water gorgonians, the impact of fishing activities may seriously compromise the conservation of the highly complex coral gardens communities. For this reason, the development of effective active and passive restoration methods is nowadays a priority in order to enhance the natural recovery of impacted cold-water coral gardens. However, the ecological restoration of mesophotic and deep-sea communities remains extremely limited, due to its technological requirements and associated costs, which bring its wide-scale and long-term application into question. This study reports the preliminary results of the first large-scale active restoration of more than 400 cold-water gorgonians on the Mediterranean continental shelf. By actively involving local fishers during two consecutive fishing seasons, by-catch gorgonians were recovered and returned to the continental shelf (at 80–90 m depth). The monitoring surveys performed by using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) revealed that 460 gorgonian transplants survived over an area of 0.23 ha. The reintroduced cold-water gorgonian population was compared to a reference natural population in terms of size and spatial structure. The cost of the restoration amounted to 140,000 €/ha, which is significantly lower than that of any deep-sea restoration actions performed to date. The results of this cost-effective active restoration highlight the viability of large-scale restoration of impacted cold-water coral communities, with promising results for the conservation and recovery of mesophotic and deep-sea ecosystems

Maternal high-fat diet (HFD) is associated with metabolic disturbances in the offspring. Fructose is a highly consumed lipogenic sugar; however, it is unknown whether skeletal muscle of maternal HFD offspring respond differentially to a fructose overload. Female Wistar rats received standard diet (STD: 9% fat) or isocaloric high-fat diet (HFD: 29% fat) during 8 weeks before mating until weaning. After weaning, male offspring received STD and, from 120 to 150 days-old, they drank water or 15% fructose in water (STD-F and HFD-F). At 150th day, we collected the oxidative soleus and glycolytic extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles. Fructose-treated groups exhibited hypertriglyceridemia, regardless of maternal diet. Soleus of maternal HFD offspring showed increased triglycerides and monounsaturated fatty acid content, independent of fructose, with increased fatty acid transporters and lipogenesis markers. The EDL exhibited unaltered triglycerides content, with an apparent equilibrium between lipogenesis and lipid oxidation markers in HFD, and higher lipid uptake (fatty acid-binding protein 4) accompanied by enhanced monounsaturated fatty acid in fructose-treated groups. Mitochondrial complexes proteins and Tfam mRNA were increased in the soleus of HFD, while uncoupling protein 3 was decreased markedly in HFD-F. In EDL, maternal HFD increased ATP synthase, while fructose decreased Tfam predominantly in STD offspring. Maternal HFD and fructose induced mitochondria ultrastructural damage, intensified in HFD-F in both muscles. Thus, alterations in molecular markers of lipid metabolism and mitochondrial function in response to fructose are modified by an isocaloric and moderate maternal HFD and are fiber-type specific, representing adaptation/maladaptation mechanisms associated with higher skeletal muscle fructose-induced mitochondria injury in adult offspring.
