We studied the thermoelectric coefficients (Seebeck and thermal conductance)of FeCo|MgO|FeCo(001) magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) from first principles using a generalized Landauer-B\"{u}ttiker formalism. FeCo|MgO|FeCo(001) MTJs usually yield smaller thermoelectric effects compared with epitaxial Fe|MgO|Fe(001) MTJs. The (magneto-) Seebeck effect is sensitive to the details of the FeCo$|$MgO interfaces. Interfacial oxygen vacancies (OVs) can enhance the thermoelectric effects in MTJs greatly. We also compute angular dependent Seebeck coefficients that provide more information about the transport physics. We describe excitation of dipole-exchange spin waves in insulating magnetic thin films by spin current injection at the surface of the film. An easy-axis magnetic surface anisotropy can induce a non-chiral surface spin wave mode with penetration depth inversely proportional to the strength of the surface anisotropy, which strongly reduces the critical current and enhances the excitation power. The importance of the interface spin wave modes on the excitation spectrum is reduced by spin pumping, which depends on the quality of the interface as expressed by the spin mixing conductance., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures

We present a theoretical study of heat transport in electrically insulating ferromagnetic wires containing a domain wall. In the regime of validity of continuum micromagnetism a domain wall is found to have no effect on the heat conductance. However, spin waves are found to be reflected by domain walls with widths of a few lattice spacings, which is associated with emergence of an additional spin wave bound state. The resulting domain wall heat conductance should be significant for thin films of Yttrium Iron Garnet with sharply defined magnetic domains., 4.5 pages, 3 figures

The polarization of the spin current pumped by a precessing ferromagnet into an adjacent normal metal has a constant component parallel to the precession axis and a rotating one normal to the magnetization. The former component is now routinely detected in the form of a DC voltage induced by the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). Here we compute AC-ISHE voltages much larger than the DC signals for various material combinations and discuss optimal conditions to observe the effect. Including the backflow of spins is essential for distilling parameters such as the spin Hall angle from ISHE-detected spin pumping experiments., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Spin pumping is the emission of a spin current by a magnetization dynamics while spin transfer stands for the excitation of magnetization by spin currents. Using Onsager's reciprocity relations we prove that spin pumping and spin-transfer torques are two fundamentally equivalent dynamic processes in magnetic structures with itinerant electrons. We review the theory of the coupled motion of the magnetization order parameter and electron for textured bulk ferromagnets (e.g. containing domain walls) and heterostructures (such as spin valves). We present first-principles calculations for the material-dependent damping parameters of magnetic alloys. The injection of pure spin current into superconductors by the dynamics of a ferromagnetic contact is studied theoretically. Taking into account suppression of the order parameter at the interfaces (inverse proximity effect) and the energy-dependence of spin-flip scattering, we determine the temperature-dependent ferromagnetic resonance linewidth broadening. A ferromagnet can resonantly absorbs rf radiation to sustain a steady precession of the magnetization around an internal or applied magnetic field. We show that under these ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) conditions, a dc voltage is generated at a normal-metal electric contact to a ferromagnet with spin-flip scattering. This mechanism allows an easy electric detection of magnetization dyamics.

We address two finite size effects in perpendicular transport through magnetic multilayers. When the magnetic layer thickness in spin valves becomes of the order or smaller than the spin-flip diffusion length, structural asymmetries affect the transport properties. A magnetic layer with thickness approaching the magnetic coherence length becomes transparent for spin currents polarized perpendicular to the magnetization. We use the generalized magnetoelectronic circuit theory to investigate both effects on the angular magnetoresistance (aMR) and spin transfer torque. We analyze recent aMR experiments to determine the spin-flip diffusion length in the ferromagnet as well as the interface spin-mixing conductance and propose a method to measure the ferromagnetic coherence length., 18 mages 10 figures

A magnetoelectronic thin-film transistor is proposed that can display negative differential resistance and gain. The working principle is the modulation of the soure-drain current in a spin valve by the magnetization of a third electrode, which is rotated by the spin-torque created by a control spin-valve. The device can operate at room temperature, but in order to be useful, ferromagnetic materials with polarizations close to unity are required., to be published in Applied Physics Letters

We theoretically study dynamic properties of thin ferromagnetic films in contact with normal metals. Moving magnetizations cause a flow of spins into adjacent conductors, which relax by spin flip, scatter back into the ferromagnet, or are absorbed by another ferromagnet. Relaxation of spins outside the moving magnetization enhances the overall damping of the magnetization dynamics in accordance with the Gilbert phenomenology. Transfer of spins between different ferromagnets by these nonequilibrium spin currents leads to a long-ranged dynamic exchange interaction and novel collective excitation modes. Magnetoelectronics is mainly digital, i.e. governed by up and down magnetizations. In contrast, analogue magnetoelectronics makes use of phenomena occuring for non-collinear magnetization configurations. Here we review theories which have recently been applied to the transport in non-collinear magnetic nanostructures in two and multiterminal structures, viz. random matrix and circuit theory. Both are not valid for highly transparent systems in a resistive environment like perpendicular metallic spin valves.
