The natural rubber-methyl methacrylate (NR-MMA) copolymer with the superior property as a viscosity modifier for lube oil has been successfully prepared. The copolymer was synthesized by free radical polymerization using radiation technique. The obtained copolymer was confirmed by the appearance of carbonyl vibration in the infrared spectra. Thermo-gravimetric analysis showed that the copolymer undergoes degradation with a final decomposition temperature around 450 °C. The scanning electron microscope images revealed that the NR-MMA copolymer possesses a rough-textured surface which swollen in the synthetic base oil. Furthermore, the copolymer was utilized as a viscosity modifier for synthetic base oils. The results show that the viscosity index for two types of synthetic base oils containing NR-MMA copolymer enhances significantly up to 34 and 23% at 5 wt% addition. Whilst the shear stability of NR-MMA copolymer containing lube oil shows a good thickening efficiency. Thus, the overall performance of the obtained copolymer has met the requirement of a good viscosity modifier for lube oil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
