While there is strong evidence measuring the association between leisure time physical activity (LTPA) and socioeconomic status (SES) there are limited data on the relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and SES. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine differences in CRF and LTPA between household income and individual education in young adults. A sample of 171 (males n=98, female n=73) young adults participated in the University of Pittsburgh- Physical Activity Study. Participants completed CRF testing. Demographic characteristics were assessed via interviewer administered standardized survey and LTPA was assessed using the interviewer administered Modifiable Activity Questionnaire. Participants were grouped by income and education level. Analysis of variance and general linear modeling was used to compare LTPA and CRF between groups. There were no differences in CRF between income levels (p=0.126) or education levels (p=0.990) for the total sample. There were no differences in LTPA between income levels (p=0.936) or education level (p=0.182) for the total sample. Results suggest that neither income nor education levels are indicators of CRF in this sample of young adults. Other environmental, sociological, or familial health mediators may have a strong effect on CRF in young adult males and females. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A survey of 759 women attending contraceptive care clinics revealed that a majority of women endorsed condom use as an important way to reduce the spread of AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome); 82 per cent reported past use of condoms, but only 14 per cent reported using condoms in addition to another form of contraception to prevent infection with sexually transmitted pathogens, including HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Purpose: Low birth weight has been associated with increased risks of mortality and/or morbidity in childhood and adulthood. Epidemiological studies suggest that maternal exposure to air pollution, especially particulate matter during pregnancy, is associated with an increased risk of delivering a low birth weight infant. The aim of this study is to explore the association between exposure to particulate matter (PM10) during pregnancy and term low birth weight (LBW: birth weight <2,500 g and gestation age ≥ 37 weeks). Methods: Birth data from the Allegheny County Health Department, Pittsburgh, PA, USA and PM10 air data generated with inverse-distance interpolation by RAND's Center for Population Health and Health Disparities, were obtained. The study population consisted of all term singleton live births (gestational age ≥ 37 weeks) born between January 1, 1994 to December 31, 2000. Infants with birth weight <2,500 g were classified as LBW. Logistic regression with robust variance estimation was performed to estimate the odds ratios of LBW per inter-quartile range increase in PM10. Results: The results showed that the odds ratios of term LBW per inter-quartile range increase in PM10 were 1.13 (95% CI: 1.02-1.25) during the first trimester and 1.10 (95% CI: 1.00-1.22) during the second trimester after adjustment for other important covariates, respectively. Conclusion: The findings of the study support the hypothesis that exposure to PM10 is associated with increased levels of term LBW. Further studies are warranted to corroborate these findings. This article examines a major statistical concern about the appropriateness of fitting GAMs in the presence of concurvity. Generalized additive models (GAMs) have been used as a standard analytic tool in studies of air pollution and health during the last decade. The air pollution measure is usually assumed to be linearly related to the health indicator and the effects of other covariates are modeled through smooth functions. Generalized linear models (GLM) with natural cubic splines as smoothers (GLM + NS) have been shown to perform better than GAM with smoothing splines (GAM + S), in regard to the bias and variance estimates using standard model fitting methods. In this article, we propose a method using partial residuals to fit GAM + S and call it the "partial regression" method.

Objective: Air quality in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, has improved over the last decade, and we investigated whether the lower concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM10) are still associated with adverse health outcomes. Methods: Daily cardiopulmonary hospital admissions in elderly residents of Allegheny County and countywide average PM10 measures were available from 1995 through 2000. Using generalized additive models (GAM), a Poisson regression model was fit to the number of daily admissions using predictor variables: lags of PM10, daily temperature and humidity, day of the week, and time. Results: Our findings suggest that there is a positive association of PM10 with hospital admissions, and the effect is related to current-day PM10 levels. Conclusions: Even at the lower levels of ambient air pollution as measured by PM10, there is still a suggestion of an adverse health effect in the elderly. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Occupational illness plays a prominent role in the health of society, yet physicians frequently neglect occupational history-taking both in clinical practice and in medical education. This study sought to examine the trends as well as related factors that influence the taking of occupationally related histories. A total of 2050 charts were reviewed for occupational information as well as several patient demographics. Physicians obtained gender and age histories in approximately 99% of their patients; however; they only completed an occupational history in 27.8%. Characteristics such as smoking, male gender, family cancer history, middle age, and medical (vs. surgical) admission were all correlated with obtaining an occupational history. Physicians continue to do a poor job of occupational history-taking and medical education must correct the situation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the association between body mass index and short-term disability in a working "white collar" population., Methods: The authors collected cross-sectional data from 19,061 health risk appraisals completed by employees of a large financial services corporation from 2000-2002. The self-reported information for demographics and job satisfaction was combined with personnel and detailed information from short-term disability events (STD) taken during the same time period., Results: After adjusting for multiple covariates, body mass index is an independent predictor for STD events. Body mass index categories of overweight and obese have odds ratios of 1.26 and 1.76 compared with normal weight (P < 0.0001)., Conclusions: The improvement of employee health and wellness should be pursued by the employer in an effort to promote healthier weight among their workers. This in turn should reduce STD events that result in the loss of worker productivity and a major cost to companies.
