Characterization and evaluation of plant genetic resources play an important role for their utilization in the crop improvement programmes.This study involves the agro-morphological and cooking quality besides, molecular characterization of 51 genotypes/advance breeding lines of rice from Kashmir Himalayas. Significant variability was observed for all agro-morphological and cooking quality traits among all the studied genotypes. Cluster analysis using UPGMA method divided the genotypes into two major clusters having 15 and 36 genotypes. Thirty eight genotypes screened using 24 SSR markers detected 48 alleles with 2.0 alleles for each locus with average polymorphism information content (PIC) of 0.37. High polymorphism information content (PIC) values was observed for the primers RM263 (0.67), RM159 (0.59) and RM333 (0.50). Furthermore, out of 38 SSR markers screened on 192 temperate rice germpalsm lines, R4M17 accurately differentiated indica and temperate japonica genotypes amplifying 220 bp and 169 bp, respectively. Accordingly, 15 genotypes were reported as indica and 28 temperate japonica in addition to 149 genotypes as intermediate types.The information on marker-based diversity and performance based on cooking quality and agronomic traits helped to select the most divergent lines for crossing. Also the analysis was useful to classify the temperate germplasm into indica and temperate japonica. The classification could be helpful to devise a strategy for inter-sub species hybridization to breed for improved rice varieties.

Scab caused by Venturia inaequalis (Cke.) Wint. is the most important fungal disease of apple. Fungicide application is a widely practiced method of disease control. The use of chemicals is however, cost intensive, tedious and ecologically unsafe. Development of genetic resistance and breeding of resistant cultivars is most reliable and a safest option. One such source of scab resistance happens to be the variety ‘Shireen’, released from SKUASTKashmir. However, till date the nature of resistance and its genetic control has not been characterized. The aim of this research was to elucidate the genetic basis of scab resistance in Shireen. The present study helped us to identify two quantitative trait loci (QTLs) on chromosome 2 and 8 and six potential CDGs for the polygenic resistance in ‘Shireen’. The genomic region corresponding to the mapped QTLs in LG 2 and LG 8 of ‘Shireen’ was examined for candidate genes possibly related to scab resistance using in silico analysis. The QTLs mapped in the genetic background of Shireen are the novel QTLs and may be transferred to desirable genetic backgrounds and provide opportunities for isolation and cloning of genes apart from their utility in order to achieve durable resistance to scab.

Autophagy is a lysosomal degradation pathway that is constitutively active in almost every cell of our body at basal level. This self-eating process primarily serves to remove superfluous constituents of the cells and recycle the degraded products. Autophagy plays an essential role in cell homeostasis and can be enhanced in response to stressful conditions. Impairment in the regulation of the autophagic pathway is implicated in pathological conditions such as neurodegeneration, cardiac disorders, and cancer. However, the role of autophagy in cancer initiation and development is controversial and context-dependent. Evidence from various studies has shown that autophagy serves dual purpose and may assist in cancer progression or suppression. In the early stages of cancer initiation, autophagy acts as a quality control mechanism and prevents cancer development. When cancer is established and progresses to a later stage, autophagy helps in the survival of these cells through adaptation to stresses, including exposure to anti-cancer drugs. In this review, we highlight various studies on autophagic pathways and describe the role of autophagy in cancer, specifically acute myeloid leukemia (AML). We also discuss the prognostic significance of autophagy genes involved in AML leukemogenesis and implications in conferring resistance to chemotherapy.

Purpose: Mannitol is a hyperosmolar agent for reducing intracranial pressure and inducing osmotic blood–brain barrier opening (OBBBO). There is a great clinical need for a non-invasive method to optimize the safety of mannitol dosing. The aim of this study was to develop a label-free Chemical Exchange Saturation Transfer (CEST)-based MRI approach for detecting intracranial accumulation of mannitol following OBBBO. Methods: In vitro MRI was conducted to measure the CEST properties of D-mannitol of different concentrations and pH. In vivo MRI and MRS measurements were conducted on Sprague-Dawley rats using a Biospec 11.7T horizontal MRI scanner. Rats were catheterized at the internal carotid artery (ICA) and randomly grouped to receive either 1 mL or 3 mL D-mannitol. CEST MR images were acquired before and at 20 min after the infusion. Results: In vitro MRI showed that mannitol has a strong, broad CEST contrast at around 0.8 ppm with a mM CEST MRI detectability. In vivo studies showed that CEST MRI could effectively detect mannitol in the brain. The low dose mannitol treatment led to OBBBO but no significant mannitol accumulation, whereas the high dose regimen resulted in both OBBBO and mannitol accumulation. The CEST MRI findings were consistent with 1H-MRS and Gd-enhanced MRI assessments. Conclusion: We demonstrated that CEST MRI can be used for non-invasive, label-free detection of mannitol accumulation in the brain following BBBO treatment. This method may be useful as a rapid imaging tool to optimize the dosing of mannitol-based OBBBO and improve its safety and efficacy.

Background: Meconium staining liquor (MSL) results from passage of meconium during labour and is used to diagnose fetal distress. Thick and granular meconium has been found to have a significant association with an abnormal cord pH and lactate and worst neonatal outcome. The aim of this study was to analyse and compare the mode of delivery, cord blood parameters and fetal outcomes in cases diagnosed with different degrees of meconium staining liquor.Methods: An observational study was carried out on 76 labouring patients presenting in the active stage of labour with term, singleton pregnancy with cephalic presentation diagnosed with either thin or thick MSL. The cases were followed up and compared in thin or thick MSL group for the mode of delivery (normal vaginal delivery, instrumental delivery or caesarean section), fetal cord blood parameter after birth (cord blood pH and lactate) and the neonatal outcome.Results: 39 cases were diagnosed with thin MSL. Of these, 74.4% delivered by a normal vaginal delivery. Maximum cases had normal cord blood parameters with a favourable neonatal outcome. 37 cases had thick MSL. Lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) rate was highest in this group (i.e. 48.6%). The neonatal outcomes were as follows- 24.3% had an APGAR score

Medical students have lost invaluable exposure to surgery and research during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the majority of placements being cancelled or converted online 1. As such, they have been denied opportunities and mentorship which have historically influenced a surgical and/or clinical-academic career 2-3.

Evidence of the effectiveness of statins, the lipid-lowering agents in retarding the progression of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a disabling neurological disease with autoimmune etiology, have been highlighted in animal studies and observational studies. The proposed immune-modulatory actions and neuroprotective effects of statins make them a promising treatment option for MS that needs to be explored further. In this systematic review, we aim to investigate the role of different statins as monotherapy or in combination with the established MS medications in improving the clinical and radiological course of MS variants, including optic neuritis, using randomized controlled trials (RCTs). We systematically searched PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), MEDLINE, Cochrane library, and Scopus databases using regular keywords and medical subject headings terms. Randomized controlled trials of any statin used in any variants of MS, including studies on statins used in optic neuritis published up to April 2021, were included in the review. Data on the effects on the relapse rate, the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) alterations, and the changes in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) lesions were collected from the included studies. Seven studies with a total of 831 patients and an average duration of follow-up of six to 36 months were included in our review. Five trials were of statins add-on to interferon therapy in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), of which four studies were assessed to be of good quality while the remaining study featured a high risk of bias. One trial of simvastatin monotherapy in Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS) was included, which was assessed to be of good methodological quality with low risk of bias and adequate patient number. A trial of simvastatin monotherapy on patients with optic neuritis was included, which was evaluated as a good quality study. Still, it had a low number of participants and a short duration of follow-up. We used the changes in disease relapse rate and EDSS as primary outcome variables and the MRI lesions changes as a secondary outcome variable. Studies in RRMS showed no significant effects on primary and secondary outcomes. The study on SPMS featured a significant improvement in EDSS in simvastatin-treated patients with no effect on relapse rate or MRI changes. Simvastatin use in optic neuritis enhances clinical visual outcomes with no significant effect on MRI changes or the rate of progression to definite MS. In contrast to animal studies and observational studies, randomized controlled trials do not replicate the positive effects of statins used as monotherapy or combined with interferon beta in patients with RRMS and optic neuritis in relapse rate EDSS or MRI changes. However, trials of statins on SPMS showed a promising effect on disability progression (EDSS score), which might support the proposed immune-modulatory and neuroprotective role of statins and serve as a baseline for further RCTs applying statins as monotherapy or combination with other established MS therapies.

Caffeinated drinks are the most widely consumed beverages globally and their intake has increased in the elderly. Caffeine exhibits dose-dependent adverse effects. Low to moderate doses cause anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and nausea. High doses of 3-5g can affect different physiological systems and lead to detrimental effects like palpitations, hypertension, agitation, seizures, and coma. Low-dose aspirin is the most used anticoagulant in preventing ischemic vascular events. An increased risk of intracranial hemorrhage is associated with low-dose aspirin with an intensified intracerebral hemorrhage risk. The aim of this research is to explore the association between caffeine and aspirin in causing lethal intracranial hemorrhage in the older population. Because of the devastating nature of intracranial hemorrhages and the inconsistent published data on the risk of intracranial hemorrhage in individuals taking both aspirin and caffeine, we conducted a systematic review considering the elderly population. We conducted the study following the reporting guidelines for systematic review and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) checklist. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were determined. Data was collected from PubMed, PubMed Central® (PMC), National Library of Medicine (MEDLINE), Google Scholar, Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI), and Web of Science by applying keywords and Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms individually. Our initial search yielded 155,270 articles, which were scrutinized, and duplicates were removed for accuracy. Of these, a total of 13 research papers were finally extracted using the PRISMA recommendations and applying other inclusion and exclusion criteria. With the help of our systematic review, we could determine that both aspirin and caffeine portrayed a role in causing intracranial hemorrhage independently, but further studies are recommended to evaluate if both could lead to similar adverse effects when taken collectively.

Purpose: To assess the posterior corneal elevation (PCE) in children with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) and compare the same with that of age and gender-matched normal children. Methods: This was a case control study. We included 110 children attending the Pediatric ophthalmology outpatient department of a tertiary eye care center in South India between September 2019 and June 2020. Fifty-five children with VKC and 55 normal age and gender-matched children were examined by Sirius tomographer/topographer (CSO, Italy) to determine the PCE, thinnest corneal thickness (TCT), simulated K (Sim K), keratoconus front (KVf) and keratoconus vertex back (KVb). The parameters were compared between the two groups. Results: A total of 220 eyes of 110 children were examined. The mean age in both groups was 10.44 ± 3.28 years, each group included 44 males and 11 females. There was no statistically significant difference in TCT and Sim K between the two groups. The mean PCE was 18.8 ± 8.4 μm in VKC group and 11.7 ± 3.9 μm in control group (P < 0.001). Both KVf and KVb were significantly higher in VKC group when compared to the control group. Conclusion: Children with VKC have significantly higher PCE as measured by Sirius tomographer, and hence, all VKC children should be screened for development of KC and the Sirius tomographer may be an appropriate tool for the same.

Acute coronary syndrome (ACS), a subdivision of ischemic cardiac disease, is the sudden occlusion of coronary vessels that results in decreased blood supply to heart muscles and possible infarction. Though some of the etiologies are hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and tobacco; certain types of chemotherapies play a major role. Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) has shown lifesaving results via drug-eluting stent (DES) deployment into occluded vessels. In this study, DES utilization among patients receiving chemotherapy will be assessed to observe if it provides any prevention against ACS. Articles were systematically screened in three databases such as PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE) using keywords and Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) terms for applicable articles. Additionally, a few relevant articles from the Cochrane Library, Molecular Diversity Preservation International (MDPI), and The New England Journal of Medicine were also used. Inclusion/exclusion criteria were applied post article screening via title and abstracts. Quality appraisal check was done using the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles (SANRA) checklist, A Measurement Tool to Assess Systematic Reviews (AMSTAR) checklist, Cochrane bias assessment tool, and Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist. Ten related studies were strictly reviewed. DES did not appear to play a preventable role against ACS during chemotherapy as no study was found assessing DES prophylactically and its efficacy in cancer patients. Future clinical trials on DES prophylactic use might be beneficial to evaluate if ACS adversities of chemotherapy can be prevented. This review is of significant benefit as cardiovascular adversities would not impede chemotherapy efficacy as cardiac adversities would not be part of the equation.

Polar metals are commonly defined as metals with polar structural distortions. Strict symmetry restrictions make them an extremely rare breed as the structural constraints favor insulating over metallic phase. Moreover, no polar metals are known to be magnetic. Here we report on the realization of a magnetic polar metal phase in a BaTiO3/SrRuO3/BaTiO3 heterostructure. Electron microscopy reveals polar lattice distortions in three-unit-cells thick SrRuO3 between BaTiO3 layers. Electrical transport and magnetization measurements reveal that this heterostructure possesses a metallic phase with high conductivity and ferromagnetic ordering with high saturation moment. The high conductivity in the SrRuO3 layer can be attributed to the effect of electrostatic carrier accumulation induced by the BaTiO3 layers. Density-functional-theory calculations provide insights into the origin of the observed properties of the thin SrRuO3 film. The present results pave a way to design materials with desired functionalities at oxide interfaces., Polar metals—metals with polar structural distortions—are known not to be magnetic. Here, the authors demonstrate a magnetic polar metal phase in a BaTiO3/SrRuO3/BaTiO3 heterostructure displaying high conductivity and ferromagnetic ordering with high saturation moment.

Stressors and trauma experienced by persons fleeing harm or persecution can cause elevated distress. This study assessed predictors of elevated distress among newly arrived refugees, asylees, and Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders in Maryland. A secondary analysis of Refugee Health Screener-15 data from 4385 refugees, asylees, and SIV holders arriving in Maryland from 2014 to 2017 was conducted. Mean scores were compared across immigrant groups, and positive screening predictors were identified using logistic regression. Mean scores were highest among SIV holders and lowest among asylees. Compared to refugees, SIV holders had greater odds of screening positive; significance was reduced after adjusting for covariates. A significant interaction term was found for SIV women, who had 1.74 greater odds than SIV males. Distress varied between immigrant groups, with asylees having lowest odds of screening positive. SIV women's significant results may owe to acculturation distress, disrupted gender expectations, and resettlement difficulties.

Bay leaf is also called as Laurus nobilis an aromatic evergreen tree or large shrub with green, glabrous leaves, in the flowering plant family Lauraceae. It is native to the Mediterranean region and is used as a bay leaf for seasoning in cooking. Its common names include bay laurel, sweet bay, bay (esp. United Kingdom) true laurel, Grecian laurel, laurel tree or simply laurel. Bay leaf refers to the aromatic leaves of several plants which are used in cooking for their distinctive flavour and fragrance. It has many medicinal properties which can also be used to treat cancer as well as gastric problems. Bay leaf is also commonly used to treat muscles and joint pain. Aqueous extracts of bay laurel can also be used as astringents and even as a reasonable salve for open wounds. The anti-inflammatory activity of bay leaf was determined but its ability to inhibit protein denaturation where denaturation of proteins is a well-documented cause of inflammation. The anti-inflammatory effect of the herb was comparable to reference analgesics and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs. The present study makes the herb worthy of further investigation.
