Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We calculate the differential conductance as a function of temperature and bias voltage, $G(T,V)$, through Au monoatomic chains with a substitutional Co atom as a magnetic impurity, connected to a four-fold symmetric lead. The system was recently proposed as a possible scenario for observation of the overscreened Kondo physics. Stretching the chain, the system could be tuned through a quantum critical point (QCP) with three different regimes, overscreened, underscreened and non Kondo phases. We present calculations of the impurity spectral function by using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) for the three different regimes characterizing the QCP. Non trivial behaviour of the spectral function is reported near the QCP. Comparison with results using the non crossing approximation (NCA), shows that the latter is reliable in the overscreened regime, when the anisotropy is larger than the Kondo temperature. For these parameters, which correspond to realistic previous estimates, $G(T,V)$ calculated within NCA exhibits clear signatures of the non-Fermi liquid behaviour within the overscreened regime., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

In many scientific applications the solution of non-linear differential equations are obtained through the set-up and solution of a number of successive eigenproblems. These eigenproblems can be regarded as a sequence whenever the solution of one problem fosters the initialization of the next. In addition, in some eigenproblem sequences there is a connection between the solutions of adjacent eigenproblems. Whenever it is possible to unravel the existence of such a connection, the eigenproblem sequence is said to be correlated. When facing with a sequence of correlated eigenproblems the current strategy amounts to solving each eigenproblem in isolation. We propose a alternative approach which exploits such correlation through the use of an eigensolver based on subspace iteration and accelerated with Chebyshev polynomials (ChFSI). The resulting eigensolver is optimized by minimizing the number of matrix-vector multiplications and parallelized using the Elemental library framework. Numerical results show that ChFSI achieves excellent scalability and is competitive with current dense linear algebra parallel eigensolvers., Comment: 23 Pages, 6 figures. Chemistry ,QD1-999 - Abstract
This article describes the synthesis of Thy-(Phe-Phe) and Thy-(Tyr-Tyr), two thymine-bearing dipeptides based on l-phenylalanine and l-tyrosine, the circular dichroism (CD), UV and dynamic light scattering (DLS) characterization of their self-assemblies, and a CD study of their interaction with nucleic acids (using homoadenine DNA and RNA) and serum proteins (utilizing BSA as a model protein). DLS studies, alongside with CD and UV investigations conducted on aqueous solutions of the derivatives under different concentration and temperature conditions, showed the formation of extensive molecular architectures with hydrodynamic mean diameters higher than 300 nm, with Thy-(Tyr-Tyr) forming at pH = 7.5 particularly large and stable networks, involving multiple units, connected by H-bonding, aromatic and hydrophobic interactions. Finally, the findings of our study suggested that Thy-(Phe-Phe) and Thy-(Tyr-Tyr), very stable in human serum, were able to bind BSA protein altering its secondary structure.

Publisher: FedOA - Federico II University Press Series: Clio. Essays in History, Archaeology and Art History Pages: 212 Language: Italian NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/urn:nbn:it:unina-29147 Abstract: Every civilization has developed different forms of knowledge and techniques to manage and exploit water, an essential element for human life, but also to defend itself from the threats that can derive from it. In preindustrial times, the need to manage such a precious commodity led to the development of different technologies, the construction of infrastructures, the creation of special judiciaries, but it also fuelled conflicts between subjects who claimed privileged or exclusive access to water resources. In addition, the risks posed by the proximity of waterways or lake basins often led societies to develop prevention techniques and practices. This range of issues is at the heart of the essays collected in this volume, which examine various medium and large cities located in Central Western Europe - from the Rhine Valley to the Iberian Peninsula, from Paris to Palermo - between the fourteenth and the nineteenth centuries., Editore: FedOA - Federico II University Press Collana: Clio.

Pages: 268 Language: Italian NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29635 Abstract: This book collects the contributions presented during the summer school Sc.OUT (University Observatory on Tourism) held in Partenio Regional Park from 28th June to 3rd July 2022. The focus concerns the relationship between tourism development and protected areas with the aim of identifying sustainable and compatible uses with the characteristics of natural territories. The Partenio’s regional park has been considered as a first test for non-invasive hypotheses of land use adapt for tourism and leisure activities. The particularity of the Park’s territory both as an area with high environmental value located in a peri-urban context and with high population densities represented a first challenge for achieving the objectives of Sc.OUT’s project. Through a multi-interdisciplinary approach, authors highlighted how tourism development requires careful planning and monitoring to reach the equilibrium between development and safeguard of these territories., Editore: FedOA - Federico II University Press Serie: Smart City, Urban Planning for a Sustainable Future Pages: 268 Lingua: Italiano NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29635 Abstract: Il volume raccoglie i contributi dei partecipanti alla scuola estiva Sc.OUT svoltasi presso l’Ente Parco regionale del Partenio dal 28 giugno al 3 luglio 2022.

Publisher: FedOA - Federico II University Press Series: Miscellaneous Pages: 181 Language: English NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29003 Abstract: If “back to the things themselves” is the motto of phenomenology, this volume aims to return to perception, over 75 years after Maurice Merleau-Ponty's Phenomenology of Perception. In this book, phenomenology discovered perception for the first time, primarily understood as bodily perception. Since then, philosophy has never ceased investigating its meaning, not only in the various philosophical domains (epistemology, aesthetics and even moral theory), but also – and increasingly – from a multidisciplinary perspective that links the problem of perception to questions pertaining to anthropology and human geography (the topic of situationality in space), cognitive psychology (the body schema and the perception of the external world), and semiotics (perception as a means of expression). This volume, therefore, presents the natural continuation of a collective reflection on the perceptive turn made by Merleau-Ponty, and on how this takes on a new social meaning, a new epistemological and cultural value that prompts us once again to ask the following question: what about perception today?, Editore: FedOA - Federico II University Press Collana: Fuori collana Pagine: 181 Lingua: Italiano NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29003 Abstract: Se “ritornare alle cose stesse” è il motto della fenomenologia, in questo volume ci si propone, a più di 75 anni di distanza dalla svolta operata da Maurice Merleau-Ponty nel suo Fenomenologia della percezione, di ritornare alla percezione.

Publisher: UniorPress Series: Miscellaneous Pages: 276 Language: French NBN: Abstract: This book collects most of the contributions that came out of the conference “Vies du port: regards croisés sur l'espace portuaire”, held in Naples on 22 and 23 September 2022 as part of the project “Les ports de la Méditerranée” funded by the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie. The port is a strategic element of the region, its main function being the transport of goods and passengers and the supply of goods and services. However, its economic dimension should not make one underestimate its social, aesthetic, cultural and linguistic impact. The aim of the project is to enhance the port as a place of life and imagery, with particular, though not exclusive, reference to French and Francophone cultures, as well as to make it a place of production and access to culture. This conference was an opportunity for specialists of various disciplines to dialogue on the theme of the port in its economic and social implications, as well as in the fields of linguistics and artistic or literary representation. Particular attention was paid to contemporary production with the participation of four artists – the duo Bianco-Valente, Raffaela Mariniello, Domenico Antonio Mancini – who have worked on the subject of port and migration on numerous occasions. Publisher: FedOA - Federico II University Press Series: Miscellaneous Pages: 94 Language: English NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29002 Abstract: In the academic world, teaching is an educational experience that is not limited to the transfer of knowledge alone, but integrates with laboratory activities, especially in the training of building engineer or building-architect. In this way, each student has the opportunity to measure their aptitudes for design. The projects of socio-parish complexes, developed in the academic year 2021-2022, by the students of the Technical Architecture course, enrolled in the second year of the Building Engineering degree course at the University of Naples Federico II, are reported in this book. This work provides the opportunity to formulate reflections on laboratory teaching, in which the project is presented as a challenge launched by the teacher, shared by the tutors and taken up by the students. This "formative moment" was a strong, meaningful and engaging experience, until it converged into an exhibition set up at the parish of San Vitale Martire in Fuorigrotta, on 28 and 29 May 2022, on the occasion of the Festa dell'Approdo di San Paul.

Aimed at secondary school students in the Campania region, the competition wished to make the students aware, through a creative writing exercise in French, of the symbolic and emotional dimension of the port space, emphasising the port as a place of life and imagination, as a frontier space capable of reconciling opposites: nature/culture, lieu/non-lieu, movement/immobility, etc. The short stories were assessed by a Jury composed of teachers of French Language and Literature at the Orientale. The anthology includes both the three winning stories and the five that received an honourable mention., Editore: UniorPress Collana: Fuori Collana Pagine: 82 Lingua: Francese NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/urn:nbn:it:unina-29642 Abstract: Il presente volume raccoglie gli otto racconti premiati dalla Giuria del concorso letterario “Vent du large: le port en récits”, bandito dall’Università di Napoli L’Orientale nell’ambito di un progetto sui porti del Mediterraneo promosso dall’Orientale e finanziato dall’AUF (Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie). Publisher: FedOA - Federico II University Press Series: Miscellaneous Pages: 350 Language: Italian / English NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29315 Abstract: This volume brings together multiple contributions on an important topic such as regeneration in the Campania region. The Proceedings of the Conference, held on March 21, 2023, and sponsored by Rotary District 2101, testify to the association's important role in the community. At the center of the discussion is our region's cultural and natural heritage, whose territory is rich in resources, cultural assets, and landscape values but also very fragile. In the approaches to the future of this heritage, the theses of experts, academics, and representatives of local authorities - many members of Rotary Clubs in the District - are compared with methodological contributions, exemplifications, good practices, and proposals. The volume debates the contemporary challenges with new urban planning approaches for self-regenerating territories, with a new paradigm that sees historical cities as the engine for the territory's growth, including cultural development. At the center of the reflections are the architectural project, mobility as an essential factor for livability and quality of life, the management plan for the historic center of Naples Unesco, energy efficiency and seismic protection of the historic building, as well as new forms of experimentation of shared administration of heritage. Campania presents a vulnerable Apennine territory with severe abandonment phenomena of inland historical centers. That's the reason why it's necessary to adopt urgent and innovative solutions are needed, inspired by concepts of rebalancing, with the creation of networks and supra-municipal circuits of fruition. The construction supply chain is addressed by highlighting, on the one hand, the negative repercussions of an inadequate national policy on Building Bonuses and, on the other, the potential, Editore: FedOA - Federico II University Press Collana: Fuori collana Pagine: 350 Lingue: Italiano / Inglese NBN: http://nbn.depositolegale.it/resolver.pl?nbn=urn:nbn:it:unina-29315 Abstract: Il volume raccoglie molteplici apporti su un tema di scottante attualità, quale la rigenerazione nel territorio della Campania.

The volume provides a comprehensive overview of the theoretical perspectives of the speakers in their respective research fields, which range from classical, modern, and contemporary literature to performing arts, linguistics, archaeology, history, law, and politics. Often, the themes of one field intertwine with other areas: for example, food becomes an economic and political issue, medicine a matter of historical analysis, and literature serves as a tool for analysing social issues.

Patients with metastatic melanoma bearing V600 mutations in BRAF oncogene clinically benefit from the treatment with BRAF inhibitors alone or in combination with MEK inhibitors. However, a limitation to such treatment is the occurrence of resistance. Tackling the adaptive changes helping cells survive from drug treatment may offer new therapeutic opportunities. Very recently the ErbB3 receptor has been shown to act as a central node promoting survival of BRAF mutated melanoma. In this paper we first demonstrate that ErbB3/AKT hyperphosphorylation occurs in BRAF mutated melanoma cell lines following exposure to BRAF and/or MEK inhibitors. This strongly correlates with increased transcriptional activation of its ligand neuregulin. Anti-ErbB3 antibodies impair the establishment of de novo cell resistance to BRAF inhibition in vitro. In order to more potently ablate ErbB3 activity we used a combination of two anti-ErbB3 antibodies directed against distinct epitopes of its extracellular domain. These two antibodies in combo with BRAF/MEK inhibitors potently inhibit in vitro cell growth and tumor regrowth after drug withdrawal in an in vivo xenograft model. Importantly, residual tumor masses from mice treated by the antibodies and BRAF/ERK inhibitors combo are characterized almost exclusively by large necrotic areas with limited residual areas of tumor growth. Taken together, our findings support the concept that triple therapy directed against BRAF/MEK/ErbB3 may be able to provide durable control of BRAF mutated metastatic melanoma.

We establish local higher integrability and differentiability results for minimizers of variational integrals $$ \mathfrak{F}(v,\Omega) = \int_{\Omega} /! F(Dv(x)) \, dx $$ over $W^{1,p}$--Sobolev mappings $u \colon \Omega \subset {\mathbb R}^n \to {\mathbb R}^N$ satisfying a Dirichlet boundary condition. The integrands $F$ are assumed to be autonomous, convex and of $(p,q)$ growth, but are otherwise not subjected to any further structure conditions, and we consider exponents in the range $1

Applying the generalization of the model for chain formation in break-junctions [JPCM 24, 135501 (2012)], we study the effect of light impurities on the energetics and elongation properties of Pt and Ir chains. Our model enables us with a tool ideal for detailed analysis of impurity assisted chain formation, where zigzag bonds play an important role. In particular we focus on H (s-like) and O (p-like) impurities and assume, for simplicity, that the presence of impurity atoms in experiments results in ..M-X-M-X-... (M: metal, X: impurity) chain structure in between the metallic leads. Feeding our model with material-specific parameters from systematic full-potential first-principles calculations, we find that the presence of such impurities strongly affects the binding properties of the chains. We find that while both types of impurities enhance the probability of chains to be elongated, the s-like impurities lower the chain's stability. We also analyze the effect of magnetism and spin-orbit interaction on the growth properties of the chains.

Computer Science - Numerical Analysis - Abstract
Estimating the number of eigenvalues located in a given interval of a large sparse Hermitian matrix is an important problem in certain applications and it is a prerequisite of eigensolvers based on a divide-and-conquer paradigm. Often an exact count is not necessary and methods based on stochastic estimates can be utilized to yield rough approximations. This paper examines a number of techniques tailored to this specific task. It reviews standard approaches and explores new ones based on polynomial and rational approximation filtering combined with a stochastic procedure., Comment: 24 pages and 8 figures. Mathematical operators whose transformation rules constitute the building blocks of a multi-linear algebra are widely used in physics and engineering applications where they are very often represented as tensors. In the last century, thanks to the advances in tensor calculus, it was possible to uncover new research fields and make remarkable progress in the existing ones, from electromagnetism to the dynamics of fluids and from the mechanics of rigid bodies to quantum mechanics of many atoms. By now, the formal mathematical and geometrical properties of tensors are well defined and understood; conversely, in the context of scientific and high-performance computing, many tensor- related problems are still open. In this paper, we address the problem of efficiently computing contractions among two tensors of arbitrary dimension by using kernels from the highly optimized BLAS library. In particular, we establish precise conditions to determine if and when GEMM, the kernel for matrix products, can be used. Such conditions take into consideration both the nature of the operation and the storage scheme of the tensors, and induce a classification of the contractions into three groups. For each group, we provide a recipe to guide the users towards the most effective use of BLAS., Comment: 27 Pages, 7 figures and additional tikz generated diagrams. In one of the most important methods in Density Functional Theory - the Full-Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (FLAPW) method - dense generalized eigenproblems are organized in long sequences. Moreover each eigenproblem is strongly correlated to the next one in the sequence. We propose a novel approach which exploits such correlation through the use of an eigensolver based on subspace iteration and accelerated with Chebyshev polynomials. The resulting solver, parallelized using the Elemental library framework, achieves excellent scalability and is competitive with current dense parallel eigensolvers., Comment: Submitted to 10th International Conference on Parallel Processing and Applied Mathematics(PPAM 2013)

We analyze the conduction bands of the one dimensional noble-metal chains that contain a Co magnetic impurity by means of ab initio calculations. We compare the results obtained for Cu and Ag pure chains, as well as O doped Cu, Ag and Au chains with those previously found for Au pure chains. We find similar results in the case of Cu and Au hosts, whereas for Ag chains a different behavior is obtained. Differences and similarities among the different systems are analyzed by comparing the electronic structure of the three noble-metal hosts. The d-orbitals of Cu chains at the Fermi level have the same symmetry as in the case of Au chains. These orbitals hybridize with the corresponding ones of the Co impurity, giving rise to the possibility of exhibiting a two-channel Kondo physics., Comment: Accepted in IEEE Trans. Magn. - April 2013

Condensed Matter - Strongly Correlated Electrons - Abstract
We calculate the conductance as a function of temperature $G(T)$ through Au monoatomic chains containing one Co atom as a magnetic impurity, and connected to two conducting leads with a 4-fold symmetry axis. Using the information derived from {\it ab initio} calculations, we construct an effective model $\Heff$ that hybridizes a 3d$^7$ quadruplet at the Co site with two 3d$^8$ triplets through the hopping of 5d$_{xz}$ and 5d$_{yz}$ electrons of Au. The quadruplet is split by spin anisotropy due to spin-orbit coupling. Solving $\Heff$ with the numerical renormalization group (NRG) % Wb: reverted my own change we find that at low temperatures $G(T)=a-b \sqrt{T}$ and the ground state impurity entropy is $\ln(2)/2$, a behavior similar to the two-channel Kondo model. Stretching the chain leads to a non Kondo phase, with the physics of the underscreened Kondo model at the quantum critical point., Comment: Accepted in Physical Review Letters
