Learning to detect, identify or select stimuli is an essential requirement of many behavioral tasks. In real life situations, relevant and non-relevant stimuli are often embedded in a continuous sensory stream, presumably represented by different segments of neural activity. Here, we introduce a neural circuit model that can learn to identify action-relevant stimuli embedded in a spatio-temporal stream of spike trains, while learning to ignore stimuli that are not behaviorally relevant. The model uses a biologically plausible plasticity rule and learns from the reinforcement of correct decisions taken at the right time. Learning is fully online; it is successful for a wide spectrum of stimulus-encoding strategies; it scales well with population size; and can segment cortical spike patterns recorded from behaving animals. Altogether, these results provide a biologically plausible theory of reinforcement learning in the absence of prior information on the relevance and timing of input stimuli.

Earth abundant Cu2MnSnS4(CMTS) absorbers for thin film solar cells were grown for the first time by a two-step vacuum approach. Metal precursors deposited on Mo-coated soda lime glass by thermal evaporation were annealed in sulfur vapors. Two series of CMTS samples were prepared to evaluate the effect of both the precursor stack (thickness and order of the metal layers) and the annealing procedure on the thin film quality. Several techniques, including Scanning Electron Microscopy, Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, Raman, X-ray Diffraction and Photoluminescence were used to test the CMTS layers and to study any possible secondary phase. Large grain size, high absorption coefficient and direct band suitable for PV applications have been obtained for Cu-poor/Mn-rich samples grown by sulfurization at 500°C&nbsp

At the end of 2017 roughly 1.8% of the worldwide electricity came from solar photovoltaics (PV), which is foreseen to have a key role in all major future energy scenarios with an installed capacity around 5 TW by 2050. Despite silicon solar cells currently rule the PV market, the extremely more versatile thin film-based devices (mainly Cu(In,Ga)Se2 and CdTe ones) have almost matched them in performance and present room for improvement. The low availability of some elements in the present commercially available PV technologies and the recent strong fall of silicon module price below 1 $/Wp focused the attention of the scientific community on cheap earth-abundant materials. In this framework, thin film solar cells based on Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) and the related sulfur selenium alloy Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) were strongly investigated in the last 10 years. More recently, chalcogenide PV absorbers potentially able to face TW range applications better than CZTS and CZTSSe due to the higher abundance of their constituting elements are getting considerable attention. They are based on both MY2 (where M = Fe, Cu, Sn and Y = S and/or Se) and Cu2XSnY4 (where X = Fe, Mn, Ni, Ba, Co, Cd and Y = S and/or Se) chalcogenides. In this work, an extensive review of emerging earth-abundant thin film solar cells based on both MY2 and Cu2XSnY4 species is given, along with some considerations on the abundance and annual production of their constituting elements.

We investigate low-temperature (&lt, 200 &deg, C) plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) for the formation of p&ndash, n junctions. Compared to the standard diffusion or implantation processes, silicon growth at low temperature by PECVD ensures a lower thermal budget and a better control of the doping profile. We previously demonstrated the successful growth of boron-doped epitaxial silicon layers (p+ epi-Si) at 180 &deg, C. In this paper, we study the activation of boron during annealing via dark conductivity measurements of p+ epi-Si layers grown on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) substrates. Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy (SIMS) profiles of the samples, carried out to analyze the elemental composition of the p+ epi-Si layers, showed a high concentration of impurities. Finally, we have characterized the p+ epi-Si layers by low-temperature photoluminescence (PL). Results revealed the presence of a broad defect band around 0.9 eV. In addition, we observed an evolution of the PL spectrum of the sample annealed at 200 &deg, C, suggesting that additional defects might appear upon annealing.

The most common multi-junction solar cell arrangement employs the InGaP/InGaAs/Ge configuration, which is usually exploited for high-efficiency space applications. We here test the reliability of a triple-junction device with an innovative low-thickness and flexible configuration: this is investigation is aimed at providing its main macroscopic features which must be taken into account for their applications. Notably, the specific optical and electrical features and the performance variation of these thin solar cells are systematically analyzed, both in begin-of-life (BOL) configuration and after irradiation (end-of-life, EOL) by either electrons or protons. Measurements of I – V curves, with correlated parameters, and of spectral responses (external quantum efficiency) are accomplished on several BOL and EOL samples: this allows to describe the inhomogeneous damage of the subjunctions and to follow the evolution of the solar cell physical quantities as a function of the kind and the amount of irradiation. Finally, photoluminescence emission spectra are measured, pointing out the effect of particle bombardment on luminescent features. Our results show that these innovative solar devices allow for the combination of high specific power, mechanical flexibility, high performance, and strong resistance to particle irradiation, making them an excellent option for space applications.

Stratified groups are those simply connected Lie groups whose Lie algebras admit a derivation for which the eigenspace with eigenvalue 1 is Lie generating. When a stratified group is equipped with a left-invariant path distance that is homogeneous with respect to the automorphisms induced by the derivation, this metric space is known as Carnot group. Carnot groups appear in several mathematical contexts. To understand their algebraic structure, it is useful to study some examples explicitly. In this work, we provide a list of low-dimensional stratified groups, express their Lie product, and present a basis of left-invariant vector fields, together with their respective left-invariant 1-forms, a basis of right-invariant vector fields, and some other properties. We exhibit all stratified groups in dimension up to 7 and also study some free-nilpotent groups in dimension up to 14.

This study tested the effectiveness of HeartMan—a mobile personal health system offering decisional support for management of congestive heart failure (CHF)—on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), self-management, exercise capacity, illness perception, mental and sexual health. A randomized controlled proof-of-concept trial (1:2 ratio of control:intervention) was set up with ambulatory CHF patients in stable condition in Belgium and Italy. Data were collected by means of a 6-min walking test and a number of standardized questionnaire instruments. A total of 56 (34 intervention and 22 control group) participants completed the study (77% male; mean age 63 years, sd 10.5). We present a computational analysis of the complex proton-transfer processes in two protic ionic liquids based on phosphorylated amino acid anions. The structure and the short time dynamics have been analyzed via ab initio and semi-empirical molecular dynamics. Given the presence of mobile protons on the side chain, such ionic liquids may represent a viable prototype of highly conductive ionic mediums. The results of our simulations are not entirely satisfactory in this respect. Our results indicate that conduction in these liquids may be limited due to a quick quenching of the proton-transfer processes. In particular, we have found that, while proton migration does occur on very short timescales, the amino groups act as proton scavengers preventing an efficient proton migration. Despite their limits as conductive mediums, we show that these ionic liquids possess an unconventional microscopic structure, where the anionic component is made by amino acid anions that the aforementioned proton transfer has transformed into zwitterionic isomers. This unusual chemical structure is relevant because of the recent use of amino acid-based ionic liquids, such as CO2 absorbent.

The purpose of this note is to record a consequence, for general metric spaces, of a recent result of David Bate. We prove the following fact: Let $X$ be a compact metric space of topological dimension $n$. Suppose that the $n$-dimensional Hausdorff measure of $X$, $\mathcal H^n(X)$, is finite. Suppose further that the lower n-density of the measure $\mathcal H^n$ is positive, $\mathcal H^n$-almost everywhere in $X$. Then $X$ contains an $n$-rectifiable subset of positive $\mathcal H^n$-measure. We refine estimates introduced by Balogh and Bonk, to show that the boundary extensions of isometries between smooth strongly pseudoconvex domains in $\C^n$ are conformal with respect to the sub-Riemannian metric induced by the Levi form. As a corollary we obtain an alternative proof of a result of Fefferman on smooth extensions of biholomorphic mappings between pseudoconvex domains. The proofs are inspired by Mostow's proof of his rigidity theorem and are based on the asymptotic hyperbolic character of the Kobayashi or Bergman metrics and on the Bonk-Schramm hyperbolic fillings., 20 pages

Background: Studies have evaluated the prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), focusing on different ages during childhood and adolescence. How cumulative prevalence increases before adulthood remains unclear. Methods: We used data from the Autism Register of the Regional Reference Centre for Autism in L’Aquila, Central Italy, to retrieve information on individuals born in 2001–2012 with any of the inclusion diagnoses of ASD (DSM criteria) for the period 2001 to 2018. Cumulative prevalence on L’Aquila district population data was calculated as percentages for three-year age strata. Results: All prevalence data were estimated at December 31st, 2018. The overall crude prevalence was 0.95% (352 cases over 36938 population). Cumulative prevalence was 1.19% among those born in 2001-2003 (15 to 17 years of follow up), 1.15% among those born in 2004-2006 (12 to 14 years of follow up), 1.04% among those born in 2007-2009 (9 to 11 years of follow up), 0.80% among those born in 2010-2012 (6 to 8 years of follow up), and 0.57% among those born in 2013-2015 (3 to 5 years of follow up). The proportion of ASD diagnoses until the age of 5 years, compared to the group diagnosed 6 to 8 years of age, showed a significant increasing trend over calendar time (53.6% for those born in 2001-2003, to 77.0% for those born in 2010-2012). Conclusions: Cumulative prevalence by time period provides a better understanding of ASD occurrence than a point prevalence. We did not find any difference in frequency of diagnosis comparing age strata and year of birth, suggesting that frequencies of ASD diagnosis remained roughly constant from 2001 to 2015. Results show that cumulative prevalence of autism diagnosis does not substantially change over time; instead, diagnosis of ASD is more likely at earliest ages over time, although new cases of ASD are also detected at later ages.

Introduction: Gorham-Stout disease is a rare idiopathic condition of the bone that is characterized by a massive and spontaneous osteolysis, with a vascular or lymphatic proliferation in bone, which is then replaced by fibrous tissue. Observation: a 16-year-old patient was referred to the maxillofacial surgery department to remove ectopic teeth bilaterally in the ramus. He had Gorham-Stout disease, managed for many years in orthopedic surgery department for a lower limb lesion and in neurosurgery department for a breach of the meninges. He was treated for 4 years with bisphosphonates. The removal of the ectopic teeth went well, with a simple postoperative course. Discussion: Gorham-Stout disease physiopathology remains unknown. Facial bones are often involved, especially the mandible. There are many possible treatments, but, due to the rarity of the disease, no therapeutic consensus exists. Bisphosphonates seem to be a good way to control this condition. So far, no case of bisphosphonates related osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported in children. Conclusion: Gorham-Stout disease can involve the mandible and may lead to ectopic teeth.

This paper is related to the problem of finding a good notion of rectifiability in sub-Riemannian geometry. In particular, we study which kind of results can be expected for smooth hypersurfaces in Carnot groups. Our main contribution will be a consequence of the following result: there exists a -hypersurface without characteristic points that has uncountably many pairwise non-isomorphic tangent groups on every positive-measure subset. The example is found in a Carnot group of topological dimension 8, it has Hausdorff dimension 12 and so we use on it the Hausdorff measure . As a consequence, we show that any Lipschitz map defined on a subset of a Carnot group of Hausdorff dimension 12, with values in , has negligible image with respect to the Hausdorff measure . In particular, we deduce that cannot be Lipschitz parametrizable by countably many maps each defined on some subset of some Carnot group of Hausdorff dimension 12. As main consequence we have that a notion of rectifiability proposed by S. Pauls is not equivalent to one proposed by B. Franchi, R. Serapioni and F. Serra Cassano, at least for arbitrary Carnot groups. In addition, we show that, given a subset of a homogeneous subgroup of Hausdorff dimension 12 of a Carnot group, every bi-Lipschitz map satisfies . Finally, we prove that such an example does not exist in Heisenberg groups: we prove that all -hypersurfaces in with are countably -rectifiable according to Pauls’ definition, even with bi-Lipschitz maps. peerReviewed

Nanosized clusters of protic ionic liquids are investigated using ab-initio DFT methods to understand their propensity to remain ionic. Protic ionic liquids are based on acid/base pairs and are ionic because of proton transfer from the acid to the base. Two prototypical ionic liquids based on triethylamine and two acids of different strengths are used here to trace the tendency toward proton transfer when the system size is gradually increased from an isolated pair of molecules to cluster of several pairs. We have found that the compounds based on the weak acid shows the existence of a well-defined minimal size that represents the threshold for the onset of ionization phenomena.

Open in a separate window The local structure of a series of homologous protic ionic liquids (PILs) is investigated using ab initio computations and ab initio-based molecular dynamics. The purpose of this work is to show that in PILs the network of hydrogen bonds may promote like-charge clustering between anionic species. We correlate the theoretical evidence of this possibility with viscosity experimental data. The homologous series of liquids is obtained by coupling choline with amino acid anions and varying the side chain. We find that the frictional properties of the liquids are clearly connected to the ability of the side chain to establish additional hydrogen bonds (other than the trivial cation–anion interaction). We also show that the large variation of bulk properties along the series of compounds can be explained by assuming that one of the sources of friction in the bulk liquid is the like-charge interaction between anions.

In the setting of Carnot groups, we are concerned with the rectifiability problem for subsets that have finite sub-Riemannian perimeter. We introduce a new notion of rectifiability that is possibly, weaker than the one introduced by Franchi, Serapioni, and Serra Cassano. Namely, we consider subsets $\Gamma$ that, similarly to intrinsic Lipschitz graphs, have a cone property: there exists an open dilation-invariant subset $C$ whose translations by elements in $\Gamma$ don't intersect $\Gamma$. However, a priori the cone $C$ may not have any horizontal directions in its interior. In every Carnot group, we prove that the reduced boundary of every finite-perimeter subset can be covered by countably many subsets that have such a cone property. The cones are related to the semigroups generated by the horizontal half-spaces determined by the normal directions. We further study the case when one can find horizontal directions in the interior of the cones, in which case we infer that finite-perimeter subsets are countably rectifiable with respect to intrinsic Lipschitz graphs. A sufficient condition for this to hold is the existence of a horizontal one-parameter subgroup that is not an abnormal curve. Background: Measurement of serum thyroperoxidase autoantibodies (TPOAb) during gestation as a classical marker for the risk of postpartum thyroiditis (PPT) predicts PPT in 1/3 to 1/2 of women. Very few studies have measured serum thyroid hormone Ab (THAb) during gestation, and none as a possible marker for PPT. Methods: In 412 women who were followed up from 7 to 11 weeks of gestation through 12 months after delivery, we measured THAb (T3.IgM, T3.IgG, T4.IgM, T4.IgG), thyroglobulin autoantibodies (TgAb) and TPOAb at study entry (7–11 week of gestation). Results: Sixty-three women (15.3%) developed PPT, which progressed to permanent hypothyroidism (PH) in 34/63 (54%). THAb+ve were 21/412 women (5.1%), the frequency being greater in those who then developed PPT (12/63 [19.0%] vs. 9/349 [2.6%], P = 4.6 × 10−8), and in the PH subgroup (26.5% [9/34] vs. 10.3% [10/29], P = 0.12). THAb positivity occurred in 9/76 women (11.8%) who were TgAb and/or TPOAb+ve compared to 12/336 women who were TgAb and TPOAb negative (3.6%, P = 0.0031). Of these 9 THAb+ve, TgAb and/or TPOAb+ve women, all (100%) developed PPT compared to 3/11 (27.3%, P = 0.0011) THAb+ve, TgAb and/or TPOAb negative women. Of these 9 and 3 PPT women, 8 and 1 progressed to PH (88.9% and 33.3%, respectively, P = 0.12). Conclusions: Gestational positivity of THAb enhance enormously the predictivity for PPT of gestational positivity of TPOAb/TgAb. However, their low frequency (5.1%) and their sensitivity (17.5% [21/63]) go against their application in lieu of TPOAb/TgAb. Objective: The aim of this study is to define a healthy and sustainable diet model with low GHGE, fulfilling dietary requirements, and considering current Italian food consumption patterns. Design: A duly designed database was developed, linking food nutritional composition and GHGE based on 921 food items consumed in Italy according to the last national food consumption survey (INRAN-SCAI 2005-2006). Linear programming was used to develop new diet plans separately for males and females, aged 18-60 years (n = 2,098 subjects), in order to minimize GHGE. The program is based on dietary goals and acceptability constraints as well as on 13 nutrient requirement constraints aiming to reach a healthy and acceptable diet for the Italian population. Results: Diet optimization resulted in a nutritionally adequate pattern minimizing GHGE values (4.0 vs. 1.9 kg CO2e/day for males and 3.2 vs. 1.6 kg CO2e/day for females). In both sexes, the nutrient intake of the optimized diet was at the established lower bound for cholesterol and calcium and at the established upper bound for free sugar and fiber. In males, intake of zinc was at the established lower bound whereas iron was at the established upper bound. Consumption of red meat and fruit and vegetables was at the established lower and upper bound, respectively, in both males and females. Despite the decrease in meat consumption, especially red meat, in the optimized diet with respect to the observed diet, levels of iron intake in females increased by 10% (10.3 vs. 11.3 mg/day) but remained below the adequate intake established in Italian national DRIs. Conclusions: An attainable healthy dietary pattern was developed that would lead to the reduction of GHGE by 48% for males and by 50% for females with respect to current food consumption in the Italian adult population. Health-promoting dietary patterns can substantially contribute to achieve related Sustainable Development Goals.

After encountering two women with serum thyrotropin (TSH) levels greater in periovulatory phase than in other days of the menstrual cycle, we hypothesized that TSH levels could be sensitive to changes in circulating estrogens in women.The objective of this study was to evaluate whether serum TSH increases after an induced acute increase of serum estradiol, and compare serum TSH increase with that of prolactin (PRL) which is a classic estradiol-upregulated pituitary hormone.In this retrospective study, we resorted to stored frozen sera from 55 women who had undergone the GnRH agonist (buserelin)-acute stimulation test of ovarian steroidogenesis. This test, that is preceded by dexamethasone administration to suppress adrenal steroidogenesis, had been performed to show an increased buserelin-stimulated response of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, a response that is frequent in polycystic ovary syndrome. Fifty-five women had enough serum volume at pertinent times (first observation early in the follicular phase and all times of the test) to permit assay of serum estradiol, TSH and PRL.Before dexamethasone administration, estradiol averaged 26.4 ± 15.5 pg/ml (reference range 23–139, follicular phase), TSH 1.78 ± 0.86 mU/L (reference range 0.3–4.2) and PRL 409.4 ± 356 mU/L (reference range 70.8–556) (mean ± SD).Serum estradiol, TSH and PRL averaged 47.2 ± 27 pg/ml, 0.77 ± 0.48 mU/L and 246.4 ± 206.8 mU/L just prior to the buserelin injection, but they peaked at 253.4 ± 113.5 pg/ml (nv 83–495, midcycle), 3.30 ± 1.65 mU/L and 540.3 ± 695.2 mU/L after injection. The responses to buserelin of estradiol, TSH and PRL were of wide magnitude. There was a significant correlation between TSH peak and serum estradiol peak, betweeen AUC0-24 h-TSH and AUC0-24 h-estradiol, or between PRL peak and estradiol peak and AUC0-24 h -PRL and AUC0-24 h-estradiol in only a subgroup of women.Therefore, women with estradiol-dependent increase in serum TSH do exist. Carnot groups are distinguished spaces that are rich of structure: they are those Lie groups equipped with a path distance that is invariant by left-translations of the group and admit automorphisms that are dilations with respect to the distance. We present the basic theory of Carnot groups together with several remarks.We consider them as special cases of graded groups and as homogeneous metric spaces.We discuss the regularity of isometries in the general case of Carnot-Carathéodory spaces and of nilpotent metric Lie groups.
