Abstract

We show, for the first time, radio measurements of the depth of shower maximum ($X_\text{max}$) of air showers induced by cosmic rays that are compared to measurements of the established fluorescence method at the same location. Using measurements at the Pierre Auger Observatory we show full compatibility between our radio and the previously published fluorescence data set, and between a subset of air showers observed simultaneously with both radio and fluorescence techniques, a measurement setup unique to the Pierre Auger Observatory. Furthermore, we show radio $X_\text{max}$ resolution as a function of energy and demonstrate the ability to make competitive high-resolution $X_\text{max}$ measurements with even a sparse radio array. With this, we show that the radio technique is capable of cosmic-ray mass composition studies, both at Auger and at other experiments., Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

Machine learning offers great potential for automated prediction of post-stroke symptoms and their response to rehabilitation. Major challenges for this endeavour include the very high dimensionality of neuroimaging data, the relatively small size of the datasets available for learning, and how to effectively combine neuroimaging and tabular data (e.g. demographic information and clinical characteristics). This paper evaluates several solutions based on two strategies. The first is to use 2D images that summarise MRI scans. The second is to select key features that improve classification accuracy. Additionally, we introduce the novel approach of training a convolutional neural network (CNN) on images that combine regions-of-interest extracted from MRIs, with symbolic representations of tabular data. We evaluate a series of CNN architectures (both 2D and a 3D) that are trained on different representations of MRI and tabular data, to predict whether a composite measure of post-stroke spoken picture description ability is in the aphasic or non-aphasic range. MRI and tabular data were acquired from 758 English speaking stroke survivors who participated in the PLORAS study. The classification accuracy for a baseline logistic regression was 0.678 for lesion size alone, rising to 0.757 and 0.813 when initial symptom severity and recovery time were successively added. The highest classification accuracy 0.854 was observed when 8 regions-of-interest was extracted from each MRI scan and combined with lesion size, initial severity and recovery time in a 2D Residual Neural Network.Our findings demonstrate how imaging and tabular data can be combined for high post-stroke classification accuracy, even when the dataset is small in machine learning terms. We conclude by proposing how the current models could be improved to achieve even higher levels of accuracy using images from hospital scanners.

Abstract

Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) models help us to connect observations and theory, by assigning galaxies to dark matter haloes. In this work we study one of the components of HOD models: the probability distribution function (PDF), which is used to assign a discrete number of galaxies to a halo, given a mean number of galaxies. For satellite galaxies, the most commonly used PDF is a Poisson Distribution. PDFs with super-Poisson variances have also been studied, allowing for continuous values of variances. This has not been the case for sub-Poisson variances, for which only the Nearest Integer distribution, with a single variance, has been used in the past. In this work we propose a distribution based on the binomial one, which provides continuous sub-Poisson variances. We have generated mock galaxy catalogues from two dark-matter only simulations, UNIT and OUTERIM, with HOD models assuming different PDFs. We show that the variance of the PDF for satellite galaxies affects the one-halo term of the projected correlation function, and the Count-In-Cells (CIC) one point statistics. We fit the clustering of eBOSS Emission Line Galaxies, finding a preference for a sub-poissonian PDF, when we only vary the parameter controlling the PDF variance and the fraction of satellites. Using a mock catalogue as a reference, we have also included both the clustering and CIC to constrain the parameters of the HOD model. Abstract

This work introduces CAPIVARA, a cost-efficient framework designed to enhance the performance of multilingual CLIP models in low-resource languages. While CLIP has excelled in zero-shot vision-language tasks, the resource-intensive nature of model training remains challenging. Many datasets lack linguistic diversity, featuring solely English descriptions for images. CAPIVARA addresses this by augmenting text data using image captioning and machine translation to generate multiple synthetic captions in low-resource languages. We optimize the training pipeline with LiT, LoRA, and gradient checkpointing to alleviate the computational cost. Through extensive experiments, CAPIVARA emerges as state of the art in zero-shot tasks involving images and Portuguese texts. We show the potential for significant improvements in other low-resource languages, achieved by fine-tuning the pre-trained multilingual CLIP using CAPIVARA on a single GPU for 2 hours. Abstract

Self-supervised learning (SSL) methods have shown promise for medical imaging applications by learning meaningful visual representations, even when the amount of labeled data is limited. Here, we extend state-of-the-art contrastive learning SSL methods to 2D+time medical ultrasound video data by introducing a modified encoder and augmentation method capable of learning meaningful spatio-temporal representations, without requiring constraints on the input data. We evaluate our method on the challenging clinical task of identifying lung consolidations (an important pathological feature) in ultrasound videos. Using a multi-center dataset of over 27k lung ultrasound videos acquired from over 500 patients, we show that our method can significantly improve performance on downstream localization and classification of lung consolidation. Abstract

The Galactic gamma-ray diffuse emission (GDE) is emitted by cosmic rays (CRs), ultra-relativistic protons and electrons, interacting with gas and electromagnetic radiation fields in the interstellar medium. Here we present the analysis of TeV diffuse emission from a region of the Galactic Plane over the range in longitude of $l\in[43^\circ,73^\circ]$, using data collected with the High Altitude Water Cherenkov (HAWC) detector. Spectral, longitudinal and latitudinal distributions of the TeV diffuse emission are shown. The radiation spectrum is compatible with the spectrum of the emission arising from a CR population with an "index" similar to that of the observed CRs. When comparing with the \texttt{DRAGON} \textit{base model}, the HAWC GDE flux is higher by about a factor of two. Unresolved sources such as pulsar wind nebulae and TeV halos could explain the excess emission. Finally, deviations of the Galactic CR flux from the locally measured CR flux may additionally explain the difference between the predicted and measured diffuse fluxes.

Abstract

The wind mission Aeolus of the European Space Agency was a groundbreaking achievement for Earth observation. Between 2018 and 2023, the space-borne lidar instrument ALADIN onboard the Aeolus satellite measured atmospheric wind profiles with global coverage which contributed to improving the accuracy of numerical weather prediction. The precision of the wind observations, however, declined over the course of the mission due to a progressive loss of the atmospheric backscatter signal. The analysis of the root cause was supported by the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina whose fluorescence detector registered the ultraviolet laser pulses emitted from the instrument in space, thereby offering an estimation of the laser energy at the exit of the instrument for several days in 2019, 2020 and 2021. The reconstruction of the laser beam not only allowed for an independent assessment of the Aeolus performance, but also helped to improve the accuracy in the determination of the laser beam's ground track on single pulse level. The results presented in this paper set a precedent for the monitoring of space lasers by ground-based telescopes and open new possibilities for the calibration of cosmic-ray observatories., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Abstract

We present a common framework to study varieties in great generality from a categorical point of view. The main application of this study is in the setting of algebraic categories, where we introduce Birkhoff varieties which are essentially subvarieties of algebraic categories, and we get a generalization of Birkhoff's variety theorem. In particular, we show that Birkhoff varieties are coreflexive equalizers. The key of this generalization is to give a more general concept of equation for subvarieties of algebraic categories. In order to get our characterization of Birkhoff varieties, we study inserters over algebraic categories, where we generalize some well-known results of algebras for finitary endofunctors over $Set$. By duality, we obtain a characterization of cosubvarieties of coalgebraic categories. Abstract

Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) is a widely used, additive flame retardant that migrates from end-use products, leading to ubiquitous exposure of humans around the world. However, little is known about whether TDCIPP disrupts the physiology of human embryonic cells. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine whether TDCIPP alters cell viability, cellular metabolism, cytosine methylation, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels within human embryonic kidney (HEK293) cells. Relative to vehicle controls, TDCIPP (0.015-0.1225 µM) resulted in a concentration-dependent increase in cell viability, a finding that was driven by an increase in relative ATP abundance. Interestingly, TDCIPP (0.061-0.98 µM) increased the rate of glycolysis - an adaptive mechanism consistent with the Warburg effect exhibited by tumorigenic cells. Moreover, relative to vehicle-treated cells, TDCIPP (0.245-15.63 µM) exposure for 48 h (but not 24 h) resulted in a significant, concentration-dependent decrease in ROS in situ, and TDCIPP (0.245 µM) exposure significantly increased carnosine within the histidine metabolism pathway. However, TDCIPP did not affect global 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) methylation (0.015-15.63 µM), cell membrane integrity (0.061-0.98 µM), nor the abundance of mitochondria (0.061-1.95 µM). Overall, our findings with TDCIPP point to a novel mechanism of action that may be relevant to human embryonic stem cells.

Abstract

Determining the structure and phenotypic context of molecules detected in untargeted metabolomics experiments remains challenging. Here we present reverse metabolomics as a discovery strategy, whereby tandem mass spectrometry spectra acquired from newly synthesized compounds are searched for in public metabolomics datasets to uncover phenotypic associations. To demonstrate the concept, we broadly synthesized and explored multiple classes of metabolites in humans, including N-acyl amides, fatty acid esters of hydroxy fatty acids, bile acid esters and conjugated bile acids. Using repository-scale analysis1,2, we discovered that some conjugated bile acids are associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Validation using four distinct human IBD cohorts showed that cholic acids conjugated to Glu, Ile/Leu, Phe, Thr, Trp or Tyr are increased in Crohn's disease. Several of these compounds and related structures affected pathways associated with IBD, such as interferon-γ production in CD4+ T cells3 and agonism of the pregnane X receptor4. Culture of bacteria belonging to the Bifidobacterium, Clostridium and Enterococcus genera produced these bile amidates. Because searching repositories with tandem mass spectrometry spectra has only recently become possible, this reverse metabolomics approach can now be used as a general strategy to discover other molecules from human and animal ecosystems.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was designed to conduct a survey covering 14,000 deg2 over 5 yr to constrain the cosmic expansion history through precise measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). The scientific program for DESI was evaluated during a 5 month survey validation (SV) campaign before beginning full operations. This program produced deep spectra of tens of thousands of objects from each of the stellar Milky Way Survey (MWS), Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS), luminous red galaxy (LRG), emission line galaxy (ELG), and quasar target classes. These SV spectra were used to optimize redshift distributions, characterize exposure times, determine calibration procedures, and assess observational overheads for the 5 yr program. In this paper, we present the final target selection algorithms, redshift distributions, and projected cosmology constraints resulting from those studies. We also present a One-Percent Survey conducted at the conclusion of SV covering 140 deg2 using the final target selection algorithms with exposures of a depth typical of the main survey. The SV indicates that DESI will be able to complete the full 14,000 deg2 program with spectroscopically confirmed targets from the MWS, BGS, LRG, ELG, and quasar programs with total sample sizes of 7.2, 13.8, 7.46, 15.7, and 2.87 million, respectively. These samples will allow exploration of the Milky Way halo, clustering on all scales, and BAO measurements with a statistical precision of 0.28% over the redshift interval z < 1.1, 0.39% over the redshift interval 1.1 < z < 1.9, and 0.46% over the redshift interval 1.9 < z < 3.5.

Abstract

We developed and tested MivacunaLA/MyshotLA, a community-informed mobile phone intervention, to increase COVID-19 vaccination among Latino parents/caretakers of minors in under-resourced areas of Los Angeles by addressing misinformation and building trust. We recruited Latino parents/caregivers with at least one unvaccinated child in East and South Los Angeles in the summer of 2021 and evaluated MivacunaLA as a randomized controlled trial with a wait-list control group. A difference-in-difference analysis showed Latino parents/caregivers that participated in MivacunaLA (n = 246), in comparison to the control group, were 15 percentage points more likely (p = 0.04) to report vaccination of minors aged 12-17 years, and 12 percentage points more likely (p = 0.03) to report a positive intention to vaccinate minors aged 2-11 years (when COVID-19 vaccines became available). Mobile phone-delivered digital interventions using videos and culturally tailored educational material to promote COVID-19 vaccine confidence can be an effective way to combat misinformation and deliver timely information to marginalized communities. Community-based participatory research approaches are crucial to advance health equity among minority communities, especially immigrant Spanish-speaking underserved communities.

Abstract

Advances in computing, collection, and sharing of Earth Observations (EOs) have significantly improved the potential for integrating EO and water resources models. Inadequate observational data for the systems simulated have been a persistent limitation in developing robust water resources models. Although various EO datasets have been available for decades, they have been under-utilized for water resources modeling. This can be due to sensor and product limitations, including spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions, and the reluctance of the water resources community to adopt the state-of-art quickly. Motivated by the dual agenda of engaging the water resources community on various aspects of integrating EOs with water resources modeling and understanding the likely factors that limit a deeper integration of EOs in water resources management, we investigated the communities' perception of water resources modeling and EO integration. This paper summarizes the findings of a web-based survey conducted at the annual ASCE-EWRI (American Society of Civil Engineers-Environmental Water Resources Institute) International Water Congress in 2022. The analysis of responses (n = 74) identified limited spatial resolution, atmospheric and cloud interference, and lack of in-situ validation data as the highest perceived barriers to integrating EOs with water resources modeling and management. Perceptions among different groups of participants and even within the groups were different. For example, the perceived barriers often differed between researchers and non-researchers (e.g., policymakers and practitioners). There were differences in perception among the remote-sensing and water resources researchers within the research community. Even among water resources communities, disparities existed between the perceptions of respondents who also identified as knowledgeable about remote sensing and those who didn't. These observations highlighted the need to intentionally develop a convergent group and domain to integrate the disciplines involved and capitalize on the advancements that have improved the EO for water resources management.
