- Abstract
Warts are often a difficult treatment problem for clinicians. The goals of the current treatment modalities are to destroy the infected cells by some physical means, to produce an antimitotic effect, to induce an enhanced immunologic response to the infected tissue, or to wish away the warts by mystical means. In this study we evaluated the effect of cimetidine as an immunomodulator agent on nongenital warts. PATIENTS AND METHODS. Fifty-four patients with nongenital warts of at least 6 months' duration, recalcitrant to any other therapeutic modalities, were selected for this study. The study protocol was approved by the ethics committees of the participating institutions (Ankara State Hospital and Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey). Exclusion criteria were hypersensitivity to cimetidine, pregnancy, age younger than 12 years, and treatment with any medication that might interact with cimetidine. The duration, number, localization, and type (common, plantar, periungual, flat, and mucosal) of lesions were noted.

Objective: Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a type of cicatricial alopecia characterized by frontal hair line recession. It is usually seen in postmenopausal women. Case report: A 60-year-old woman presented with the complaints of hair loss and frontal hairline recession present for two years. On dermatologic examination frontal hairline recession and skin atrophy involving this scalp area were observed. A punch biopsy specimen taken from the frontal hairline revealed decrease in hair follicle count, variation in hair follicle sizes, perifollicular fibrosis and mild lymphoplasmocytic infiltration. In addition an upward displacement of subcutaneous fat tissue towards the upper dermis was observed. The histopathologic diagnosis was interpreted as lichen planopilaris. However, a diagnosis of frontal fibrosing alopecia was considered as the clinical findings were so typical and histopathological findings were supportive. Conclusion: This article highlights the general features of FFA which is a newly described clinical entity by reporting this case. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tabanlıoğlu D, Pigmente bazal hücreli karsinomda dermatoskopik ve histopatolojik özellikler arasındaki korelasyon, Hacettepe Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi, Dermatoloji Anabilim Dalı Tezi. Ankara, 2008.

Anahtar kelimeler: Ksantelazma, aterosklerotik risk faktörleri, lipoprotein(a), metabolik sendrom, Framingham risk skoru ABSTRACT Xanthelasma palpebrarum and its relation with atherosclerotic risk factors. Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Thesis in Dermatology, Ankara, 2004. The clinical significance of xanthelasma as a marker of lipid metabolism disorders and coronary artery disease is not well defined yet. Studies evaluating serum lipoproteins in patients with xanthelasma have not provided explicit results. The purpose of this study was to determine whether xanthelasma palpebrarum is a cutaneous marker of atherosclerosis or not, considering its possible relationship with atherosclerotic risk factors. With this purpose, patients who applied to Hacettepe University Hospital for any reasons were evaluated for presence of xanthelasma. Hundred patients with xanthelasma, excluding those with chronic renal failure and a history of acute coronary syndrome in the past 2 months, and a control group of 100 patients of similar age and sex were included in the study. After being questioned in details for atherosclerotic risk factors, dermatological and cardiovascular examinations of both patients and control group were done, their ECG traces were obtained and blood specimens for analysis of glucose lipid and lipoprotein(a) levels were taken after a 12 hours of fasting. As a result of the statistical analysis of the data, it is found that total cholesterol and LDL levels of patients with xanthelasma palpebrarum were higher than the control group (p=0.005 and p=0.001 respectively), however there was no increased lipoprotein(a) levels, metabolic syndrome frequency, cardiovascular disease ratio and risk (p>0.05). With these findings, it is concluded that xanthelasma palpebrarum is neither a cutaneous marker of atherosclerosis nor a predictor of a future cardiovascular event. Keywords: Xanthelasma, atherosclerotic risk factors, lipoprotein(a), metabolic syndrome, Framingham risk scoring 61

- Abstract
This study aimed to examine the effects of a visual praxis-based occupational therapy (VPOT) programme on reading and motor skills for children with developmental dyslexia (DD). Forty-two children were included in the study. Additionally, before VPOT, the Reading-Aloud and Reading-Comprehension Test 2 (ORSRC-2) and the Bruininks-Oseretsky Motor-Proficiency-Test-2-Brief Form (BOT2-BF) were applied to the participants. According to the study design, VPOT was applied to two sessions per week for 8 weeks to group A. During this period, group B was accepted as the control group. At the end of these 8 weeks, evaluation tests were applied to both groups. Then, group A was defined as the control group and Group B as the intervention group, and VPOT was applied to Group B. At the end of another 8 weeks, evaluation tests were applied to both groups for the third time. When the final ORSRC-2 results were examined, VPOT was found to be an effective programme for improving reading skills. Additionally, when the final BOT2-BF results were examined, VPOT was determined to be effective in improving motor skills (p < 0.05). We believe that it is important to carry out comprehensive studies such as the VPOT programme to solve problems in the physical and learning activities of children with DD., (© 2024 The Author(s). - Abstract
Aim: To investigate the relationship between motor and sensory development in the first 4 months of life in preterm infants born at 32 gestational weeks and below., Material and Methods: The study consisted of 56 high-risk infants with a corrected age of 1 month who were born at 32 gestational weeks and stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit for at least 15 days. Neuro Sensory Motor Developmental Assessment and Infant Sensory Profile-2 were used for evaluation. These assessments were applied to preterm infants at the 1
st and 4th months. The results of assessments were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. The relationship between the results of motor and sensory assessments was analyzed using Spearman's correlation test., Results: The mean gestational age of the infants was 29.58±2.09 weeks, their birth weights were 1233.87±251.22 grams, and their duration of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit was 26.48±9.58 days. There was a statistically significant difference between the Neuro Sensory Motor Developmental Assessment and Infant Sensory Profile-2 scores between the 1st and 4th months (p<0.05). It was found that there was a risk in terms of sensory development in 86-91% of the preterm infants at the 1st month and in 69-85% at the 4th month. There was moderate-strong degree of significant relationship between motor and sensory development., Conclusion: Considering the findings of our study, preterm infants are at risk for motor and sensory development. There is, therefore, a need for future research to investigate the effect of early sensory-based intervention approaches on preterm infants., Competing Interests: Conflict of Interest: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare., (Copyright: © 2020 Turkish Archives of Pediatrics.)- Published

- Abstract
Background: The present study was designed to compare hand function in autistic children with history of upper extremity trauma with that of autistic children those who do not have history of trauma., Methods: The study group included total of 65 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and was divided into 2 groups: children with trauma history (Group I) and control group (Group II) (Group I: n=28; Group II: n=37). Hand function was evaluated with 9-Hole Peg Test and Jebsen Hand Function Test. Somatosensory function was evaluated using somatosensory subtests of Sensory Integration and Praxis Test. Results were analyzed with Student's t-test and Mann-Whitney U test using SPSS version 20 software., Results: Hand function and somatosensory perception test scores were statistically significantly better in children without upper extremity trauma history (p<0.05). When association between hand function tests and upper extremity somatosensory perception tests was taken into account, statistically significant correlations were found between all parameters of hand function tests and Manual Form Perception and Localization of Tactile Stimuli Test results (p<0.05)., Conclusion: Autistic children with upper extremity trauma history had poor somatosensory perception and hand function. It is important to raise awareness among emergency service staff and inform them about strong relationship between somatosensory perception, hand function, and upper extremity trauma in children with ASD in order to develop appropriate rehabilitation process and prevent further trauma.

- Abstract
Pigmented Bowen's disease is a rare subtype of in situ squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and mucosa, with a potential risk of invasion and metastasis. It is universally accepted that human papillomavirus (HPV) is the cause of genital Bowen's disease. Herein we report an unusual case of pigmented Bowen's disease of the genital area that clinically simulated malignant melanoma. Accurate diagnosis could only be established after histological examination. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis showed that the lesion harbored HPV 16 DNA. Although pigmented Bowen's disease is rare, it should be considered in the differential diagnosis of all pigmented lesions of the genitalia. This case report highlights the necessity of biopsy and histopathological examination for every suspicious cutaneous lesion.
