Abstract

The organization of rural areas in early Middle Ages and its observability through techniques of location taken by notaries is a classic italian subject in the historiography in the second half of the 20th century. The documentation produced in Verona lend to a verify of the ipothesis and to the formulation of guidelines for the interpretation of this formulas as concerning settlement and village territory. The number of documents produced and preserved in Verona between 9th and 12th century, and its homogeneity as institutions which produced and trasmitted them, allows to deal with a complex analysis that must consider several others variables. On the hand of documentation it deals with the possible variety, up to personal practice, of notary’s formulas and uses; these are then linked on to differences on geographic patterns, ownership relations, landlords presence and agrarian practices. The variety of geographical context, equally divided between a hill of significant size, a dry and irrigated high plain and the lowlands subject to flood, is proposed as a positive element to identify different factors in the building of rural settlement, its organization and rapresentations. It is assumed that these formulas are developed into patterns resulting by a dialectic between notary’s culture and perception of the space organization, which should be the resulting in the relationship between human communities and the territory where these act. The aim is highlighting factors which were found to underlie the formation of village territories. This is the level more elusive and less considered by italian historiography that has traditionally focused on the jurisdictional (both landlord and ecclesiastical) or fiscal one and therefore the relationship between power and territory. The comparative reading of location practice as a system of relations between the words – elaborated by a topographic level diachronic as well as synchronous – allows instead to highlight their links with the different practices in the territory: not only through the presence of landlordship, but also the structure of habitat, the forms of solidarity and the access to common resources. L’organizzazione del territorio rurale nel medioevo e la sua conoscibilità attraverso le tecniche ubicatorie utilizzate dai notai costitiscono un tema classico nella storiografia italiana della seconda metà del Novecento. La documentazione prodotta nel territorio veronese ben si presta per una verifica delle ipotesi e la formulazione di alcune linee guida per l’interpretazione delle formule notarili per quanto attiene all’insediamento e alla territorialità di villaggio. Il numero di documenti prodotti e conservati nel Veronese per i secoli IX-XII, e la loro omogeneità quanto a istituzioni che ce li hanno conservati e tramandati, permette di affrontare una complessa analisi che deve considerare diverse variabili. Sul piano documentario si tratta di possibili varietà, al limite dell’individualità, di formulari e di usi notarili; a queste si uniscono differenze geografiche, di assetti proprietari, dello sviluppo di presenze signorili e di pratiche agrarie, oltre che di popolamento che caratterizzano questo territorio. In particolare la varietà del quadro geografico, equamente suddiviso tra una fascia collinare di non disprezzabile estensione, una fascia di pianura asciutta e irrigua e una di bassa pianura soggetta a esondazioni si prospettava come un elemento positivo per identificare i diversi fattori attivi nella costruzione dell’insediamento rurale, la sua organizzazione e rappresentazione. Il presupposto di partenza è che le formule ubicatorie siano articolate in schemi frutto di una dialettica tra cultura notarile da un lato e percezione dell’organizzazione dello spazio dall’altro; quest’ultima a sua volta risultato del rapporto che si instaura tra le comunità umane e il territorio in cui le stesse vengono ad agire. L’intento è quello di evidenziare i molteplici fattori che sono stati ritenuti alla base della formazione dei territori di villaggio. È questo il livello più sfuggente e meno preso in considerazione da una storiografia italiana che ha tradizionalmente privilegiato il piano giurisdizionale (sia signorile che ecclesiastico) o fiscale e dunque il rapporto tra potere e territorio. La lettura comparata delle prassi ubicatorie come sistema di relazioni tra i termini, condotta a livello topografico sia in senso diacronico che sincronico, permette invece di evidenziarne i nessi con le diverse pratiche sul territorio: non solo le presenze fondiarie o signorili, ma anche le strutture dell’habitat, le forme di solidarietà e l’accesso alle risorse comuni.

Avec une moyenne de 350 000 visiteurs par an, la Maison de Juliette, à Vérone, s’impose comme l’un des cas les plus retentissants de patrimonialisation de la littérature. Cette contribution propose une lecture de la Maison de Juliette en tant que dispositif patrimonial complexe qui fait appel à plusieurs pans de notre culture, dans la mesure où cette mémoire collective est transmise par le biais de stratégies qui éludent la lecture (la plupart des visiteurs n’ayant jamais lu la tragédie shakespearienne). Ce phénomène s’est nourri de la raison patrimoniale qui, dans l’Italie post-unitaire du xixe siècle, a vu cette maison devenir un enjeu identitaire pour la ville, au point qu’elle a été profondément remaniée afin de ressembler à la maison décrite par Shakespeare. Aujourd’hui, des centaines de milliers de visiteurs sont confrontés à la question du vrai et du faux, mais l’expérience de la visite de la Maison de Juliette se joue sur le plan de la vraisemblance, et non de la réalité historique. With 350,000 visitors each year on average, Juliet’s House in Verona is one of the most astounding cases of the patrimonialization of literature. This article proposes a reading Juliet’s House as a complex heritage apparatus that draws on various aspects of culture, in the sense that a collective memory is transmitted through strategies that elude reading (the majority of visitors having never read Shakespeare’s tragedy). This phenomenon has drawn on heritage as an excuse in post-unification Italy in the 19th century that has seen this House become a part of the city’s identity to the point that it has been profoundly modified in order to better resemble that described by Shakespeare. Today, hundreds of thousands of visitors are faced with the question of what is real or fake, but the visitor experience in Juliet’s House is based on believability and not historical accuracy. Con un promedio de 350 000 visitantes al año, la Casa de Julieta en Verona es uno de los casos más famosos de patrimonialización de la literatura. Este trabajo propone una lectura de la Casa de Julieta como un complejo dispositivo patrimonial, que apela a varios elementos de nuestra cultura, ya que esta memoria colectiva se transmite a través de estrategias que eluden la lectura (la mayoría de los visitantes nunca han leído la tragedia shakesperiana). Este fenómeno se ha visto alimentado por la lógica patrimonial que, en la Italia pos-unitaria del siglo XIX, hizo que esta casa se convirtiera en un reto identitario para la ciudad, habiendo sido incluso, ampliamente remodelada para asemejarse a la casa descrita por Shakespeare. Hoy en día, cientos de miles de visitantes se enfrentan a la cuestión de lo verdadero y lo falso, pero la experiencia de visita de la Casa de Julieta se inserta en una lógica de verosimilitud, más no de realidad histórica.

Abstract

Fin dal 1880, anno di apertura del San Giacomo di Tomba di Verona, furono costantemente ricoverati nel manicomio veronese bambini e bambine dai quattro ai tredici anni. Attraverso l’analisi delle loro cartelle cliniche, il presente saggio esamina le dinamiche di ricovero e dimissione di questi fanciulli intrecciandole alle trasformazioni (e alla nascita) degli istituti preposti alla loro cura e assistenza e all’attenzione degli psichiatri verso l’infanzia, sino alle soglie del primo conflitto mondiale. Sono inoltre studiate le relazioni economiche e sociali sorte tra famiglie, istituti ospedalieri e istituzioni municipali veronesi. Since 1880, when the San Giacomo di Tomba opened, children from four to thirteen years old have been constantly hospitalized in the insane asylum of Verona. Through the analysis of their medical records, this paper studies the dynamics of hospitalization and discharge of these patients. Above all, it intertwines these medical procedures with the transformations (and the foundation) of the different institutions which had to take care of children and the attention of psychiatrists towards them, up to the threshold of the First World War. The economic and social relations that have arisen between families, hospitals and municipal institutions in Verona are also under examination.

We performed a follow-up of a previously reported SARS-CoV-2 prevalence study (April‒May 2020) in Verona, Italy. Through May 2022, only <1.1% of the city population had never been infected or vaccinated; 8.8% was the officially reported percentage. Limiting protection measures and vaccination boosters to elderly and frail persons seems justified.

Muchos críticos y arquitectos, a lo largo de los años, han encontrado semejanzas y analogías entre la restauración llevada a cabo por Carlo Scarpa en el museo de Castelvecchio (Verona, Italia, 1957-73) y la de Sverre Fehn en el Hedmarkmuseet (Hamar, Noruega, 1967-1980), a pesar de las claras diferencias que hay entre la manera de hacer arquitectura de Scarpa y la de Fehn. Sin embargo, la postura crítica hacia el tema del pasado es la misma. La premisa teórica es, para ambos, la dignidad del lenguaje contemporáneo de la arquitectura, que puede con legitimidad confrontarse con lo antiguo; el objetivo es llegar a un punto de equilibrio tal que tanto lo nuevo como lo antiguo puedan adquirir algo desde la confrontación.

Abstract

Cultural layers are deposits resulting from settlement and human activity on natural soil in the past. Materials from past domestic activities that become buried into the soil can be used to reconstruct human impact in a specific area in the past. For instance, humans have used fire for millennia, and charcoal in soils and sediments is applied as evidence of anthropic activity. In this context, assessing the abundance and degradation level of charcoal fragments can clarify anthropic activities in cultural deposits. In European towns, cultural layers with similar characteristics, have been defined as urban “Dark Earth” (UDE) but their age, formation and composition often differ significantly across sites. This study examined three archaeological sites in Verona, Italy, where UDE layers with similar characteristics have been identified. The primary aim of this research is to understand the anthropogenic influence on the development of UDE layers, by characterizing their geochemistry and the carbonaceous materials. To pursue this goal, we provide a micromorphological description of the sites, evaluate UDE features and the abundance of charred material and characterize the amorphous/crystalline degree through μ-Raman spectroscopy. Bulk ma- terial was described in terms of amounts of total organic carbon (TOC), recalcitrant organic carbon (ROC), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and trace element concentration. Radiocarbon dating of charred and humin fractions was performed to clarify the dynamics underlying UDE origin. We investigate the relationship between the different variables analyzed in the UDE layers at each site. Results show that a diverse array of human activities including metal tool and/or ceramic manufacturing were related to the formation of UDE layers. The investigation of carbonaceous fractions highlight differences in soil organic carbon and charred material, both of which are correlated with human influence.

260. Scrittura e interpunzione nelle chartae del Regnum Italiae: il caso veronese (secc. IX-X).

Abstract

This paper arises from a broader research on the punctuation of private documents in northern Italy in the 8th and 9th centuries and is focused on the chartae produced in Verona, much different in their script from those originated in other areas of the Regnum Italiae. It shows that the evolution beginning in the 8th century and continuing in the 9th came to completion also as a result of the changes affecting the documentation during the 10th century. The paper provides an analysis of the punctuation marks in relation to the formulary and to the script, showing on the one hand a normalization in the use of punctuation, defined by the requirements of the writing and affecting the gradation of the pause. As the script does not usually leave much space between words or groups of words, the different degrees of the pause are mostly expressed by punctuation marks with a very simple morphology. On the other hand, this paper highlights a progressive standardization in the morphology of punctuation marks as a result of which some pauses, such as separations between the protocol and the text, and between the text and the eschatocol, are almost always expressed by an exclusive sign. Abstract

The history of the Giazza forest in the Illasi valley (province of Verona, Northern Italy) is worth remembering. By the end of the 19th century, because of habitual unregulated cuttings and intensive grazing, no forest cover remained on the steep mountain slopes. Streams rushed unchecked through the valley, causing severe erosion and related environmental problems. In the first decade of the 20th century, a new forest was literally "created" by far-sighted foresters who, under difficult environmental conditions, did essential engineering for soil protection and site preparation for reforestation. We forget that the quality and vision of their work is the reason, a century later, hundreds of people each weekend can walk through a thriving forest.

Abstract

This article explores institutional responses to and societal understandings of the 1882 Adige flood in northern Italy, which particularly affected the city of Verona. The article investigates the transformative power of that disaster on a national scale in terms of forest policy and at a city level in terms of water management and urban planning. After the flood, an extensive programme of works aiming to contain and discipline both the river and its adjacent city dwellers coexisted with the launch of forest conservation and reforestation plans. This flood and its recovery phase incorporated and materialized the early Italian state's relationship to the natural world. We interpret the flood as providing an opportunity for redirecting Italy's local and national flood management strategies, triggering an explicit awareness of the interrelation between lowlands and highlands and enhancing modernization processes in many respects. Despite its historical and symbolic relevance, this flood has not yet been fully researched and poses crucial questions about ways of organising and selectively obliterating collective memories of disasters.

La colonia romana di Augusta Taurinorum è all'origine di Torino. Dopo qualche parola per illustrare la fondazione, ed aver fornito riferimenti bibliografici relativi, si discute una proposta che assume che la fondazione sia avvenuta alle None di Febbraio. Nella discussione, particolare attenzione verrà data agli scritti dello storico Heinrich Nissen sulla planimetria della città romana. Si considereranno anche altri siti romani per confronto. Alcune considerazioni sul Das Templum di Nissen, del 1869, saranno proposte. Nel libro di Nissen troviamo infatti il decumano orientato verso il sorgere del sole legato al giorno di fondazione. Si citerà anche una lezione di Friedrich Nietzsche. Di fatto, il lavoro di Nissen e poi di Nietzsche sono i primi studi di filologia Greca e Latina sull'orientazione solare che coinvolgano puntualmente, in particolare quello di Nissen, gli scritti degli agrimensori romani. 296. CITIES DOMINATED BY LIONS: THE FIFTEENTH-CENTURY VENETIAN MAINLAND STATE DEPICTED BY INHABITANTS OF THE SUBJECT CITIES.

Abstract

In the course of the long fifteenth century a large part of northeastern Italy came under Venetian rule. This article analyzes how this construction of the Venetian mainland state, the Terraferma, affected the ways in which its inhabitants depicted the territories involved. Focusing on a set of representations of mainland cities, it examines the ways in which these representations were constructed and the factors that influenced this. In general, two main tendencies can be distinguished: depictions of the subject territories as without links to Venice, or as territories whose identities have fundamentally changed by coming under Venetian rule. However, these two general tendencies could be brought about by a large variety of, often interconnecting, reasons. The article therefore emphasizes the existence of a multiplicity of ways in which the inhabitants of the mainland state defined the cities they were depicting, and of a multiplicity of factors influencing this.
