Search

The problem of nucleon-nucleon correlations and meson exchange currents has been vividly debated in connection with the neutrino-nucleus cross sections. In this work we focus on nucleon-nucleon correlations by discussing a formal correspondence between the approaches based on independent particles and the ab initio approaches involving correlated wave functions. We use a general technique based on unitary transformation mapping the Fermion operators relative to bare nucleons into quasi-particle operators relative to dressed nucleons. We derive formulas for spectral functions, response functions, momentum distribution, separation energy, general enough to be applied with any kind of effective nucleon-nucleon interaction. We establish the relation between the non-energy-weighted sum rule and the Fermi sea depopulation. With our tools we evaluate whether approaches based on effective interactions are compatible with the expected amount of correlations coming from ab initio calculations. The momentum distribution of particle production in heavy-ion collisions encodes information about thermalization processes in the early-stage quark-gluon plasma. We use kinetic theory to study the far-from-equilibrium evolution of an expanding plasma with an anisotropic momentum-space distribution. We identify slow and fast degrees of freedom in the far-from-equilibrium plasma from the evolution of moments of this distribution. At late times, the slow modes correspond to hydrodynamic degrees of freedom and are naturally gapped from the fast modes by the inverse of the relaxation time, $\tau_R^{-1}$. At early times, however, there are an infinite number of slow modes with a gap inversely proportional to time, $\tau^{-1}$. From the evolution of the slow modes we generalize the paradigm of the far-from-equilibrium attractor to vector and tensor components of the energy-momentum tensor, and even to higher moments of the distribution function that are not part of the hydrodynamic evolution. We predict that initial-state momentum anisotropy decays slowly in the far-from-equilibrium phase and may persist until the relaxation time., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Univalent functions are complex, analytic (holomorphic) and injective functions that have been widely discussed in complex analysis. It was recently proposed that the stringent constraints that univalence imposes on the growth of functions combined with sufficient analyticity conditions could be used to derive rigorous lower and upper bounds on hydrodynamic dispersion relation, i.e., on all terms appearing in their convergent series representations. The results are exact bounds on physical quantities such as the diffusivity and the speed of sound. The purpose of this paper is to further explore these ideas, investigate them in concrete holographic examples, and work towards a better intuitive understanding of the role of univalence in physics. More concretely, we study diffusive and sound modes in a family of holographic axion models and offer a set of observations, arguments and tests that support the applicability of univalence methods for bounding physical observables described in terms of effective field theories. Our work provides insight into expected `typical' regions of univalence, comparisons between the tightness of bounds and the corresponding exact values of certain quantities characterizing transport, tests of relations between diffusion and bounds that involve chaotic pole-skipping, as well as tests of a condition that implies the conformal bound on the speed of sound and a complementary condition that implies its violation., v2: minor revision, matching the published version

Mass measurements continue to provide invaluable information for elucidating nuclear structure and scenarios of astrophysical interest. The transition region between the $Z = 20$ and $28$ proton shell closures is particularly interesting due to the onset and evolution of nuclear deformation as nuclei become more neutron rich. This provides a critical testing ground for emerging ab-initio nuclear structure models. Here, we present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich chromium isotopes using the sensitive electrostatic Multiple-Reflection Time-Of-Flight Mass Spectrometer (MR-TOF-MS) at TRIUMF's Ion Trap for Atomic and Nuclear Science (TITAN) facility. Our high-precision mass measurements of $^{59, 61-63}$Cr confirm previous results, and the improved precision in measurements of $^{64-65}$Cr refine the mass surface beyond N=40. With the ab initio in-medium similarity renormalization group, we examine the trends in collectivity in chromium isotopes and give a complete picture of the N=40 island of inversion from calcium to nickel., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Much effort is devoted to measuring the nuclear symmetry energy through neutron star (NS) and nuclear observables. Since matter in the NS core may be non-hadronic, observables like radii and tidal deformability may not provide reliable constraints on properties of nucleonic matter. We demonstrate that coincident timing of a resonant shattering flare (RSF) and gravitational wave signal during binary NS inspiral probes the crust-core transition region and provides constraints on the symmetry energy comparable to terrestrial nuclear experiments. We show that nuclear masses, RSFs and measurements of NS radii and tidal deformabilities constrain different density ranges of the EOS, providing complementary probes.

Experimental data of charged current inclusive neutrino cross sections on argon as a function of different variables have recently appeared. We have compared them to our theoretical approach. Overall we find an agreement in spite of a tendency of underestimation in some specific regions. A new aspect is the availability of data in terms of the energy transfer to the nucleus, which allows a better separation of the different reaction mechanisms. We explain the deterioration of agreement in specific kinematical conditions by the absence in our model of two-pion production and other inelastic channels, more important for MicroBooNE than for T2K., Comment: Published version

The automated generation of arbitrary exclusive final states produced via photon fusion in ultraperipheral high-energy collisions of protons and/or nuclei is implemented in the MadGraph5_aMC@NLO and HelacOnia Monte Carlo codes. Cross sections are calculated in the equivalent photon approximation using $\gamma$ fluxes derived from electric dipole and charge form factors, and incorporating hadronic survival probabilities. Multiple examples of $\gamma\gamma$ cross sections computed with this setup, named gamma-UPC, are presented for proton-proton, proton-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at the Large Hadron Collider and Future Circular Collider. Total photon-fusion cross sections for the exclusive production of spin-0,2 resonances (quarkonia, ditauonium, and Higgs boson; as well as axions and gravitons), and for pairs of particles ($J/\psi J/\psi$, WW, ZZ, Z$\gamma$, $t\bar{t}$, HH) are presented. Differential cross sections for exclusive dileptons and light-by-light scattering are compared to LHC data. This development paves the way for the upcoming automatic event generation of any UPC final state with electroweak corrections at next-to-leading-order accuracy and beyond., Comment: 31 pages, 34 plots. We use the Hamiltonian formulation of kinetic theory to perform a stability analysis of non-thermal fixed points in a non-Abelian plasma. We construct a perturbative expansion of the Fokker-Planck collision kernel in an adiabatic approximation and show that the (next-to-)leading order solutions reproduce the known non-thermal fixed point scaling exponents. Working at next-to-leading order, we derive the stability equations for scaling exponents and find the relaxation rate to the non-thermal fixed point. This approach provides the basis for an understanding of the prescaling phenomena observed in QCD kinetic theory and non-relativistic Bose gas systems., 9 pages, 2 figures. Transverse spherocity is an event shape observable, which separates the events based on their geometrical shapes. In this work, we use transverse spherocity to study the identified light flavor production in heavy-ion collisions using A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) model. We obtain the elliptic flow coefficients for pions, kaons and protons in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV as a function of transverse spherocity and collision centrality. Also, we study the number of constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling of elliptic flow which interprets the dominance of the quark degrees of freedom at the early stages of the collision. We observe a clear dependence of the elliptic flow for identified particles on transverse spherocity. It is found that the NCQ-scaling is strongly violated in events with low transverse spherocity compared to transverse spherocity-integrated events, confirming the fragmentation-based hadronization mechanism for high-momentum partons involved in the dynamics of jetty-like events., Same as the published version. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2008.13616

Excited state contamination remains one of the most challenging sources of systematic uncertainty to control in lattice QCD calculations of nucleon matrix elements and form factors: early time separations are contaminated by excited states and late times suffer from an exponentially bad signal-to-noise problem. High-statistics calculations at large time separations $\gtrsim1$ fm are commonly used to combat these issues. In this work, focusing on $g_A$, we explore the alternative strategy of utilizing a large number of relatively low-statistics calculations at short to medium time separations (0.2--1 fm), combined with a multi-state analysis. On an ensemble with a pion mass of approximately 310 MeV and a lattice spacing of approximately 0.09 fm, we find this provides a more robust and economical method of quantifying and controlling the excited state systematic uncertainty. A quantitative separation of various types of excited states enables the identification of the transition matrix elements as the dominant contamination. The excited state contamination of the Feynman-Hellmann correlation function is found to reduce to the 1% level at approximately 1 fm while for the more standard three-point functions, this does not occur until after 2 fm. Critical to our findings is the use of a global minimization, rather than fixing the spectrum from the two-point functions and using them as input to the three-point analysis. We find that the ground state parameters determined in such a global analysis are stable against variations in the excited state model, the number of excited states, and the truncation of early-time or late-time numerical data., Comment: v2: updates based on referee comments and some community response, consistent with published version; v1: 13 pages plus appendices. I give an overview of recent developments in the study of the coupling of the QCD axion to nucleons and other octet baryons. The variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) is an algorithm to compute ground and excited state energy of quantum many-body systems. A key component of the algorithm and an active research area is the construction of a parametrized trial wavefunction -- a so called variational ansatz. The wavefunction parametrization should be expressive enough, i.e. represent the true eigenstate of a quantum system for some choice of parameter values. On the other hand, it should be trainable, i.e. the number of parameters should not grow exponentially with the size of the system. Here, we apply VQE to the problem of finding ground and excited state energies of the odd-odd nucleus $^6$Li. We study the effects of ordering fermionic excitation operators in the unitary coupled clusters ansatz on the VQE algorithm convergence by using only operators preserving the $J_z$ quantum number. The accuracy is improved by two order of magnitude in the case of descending order. We first compute optimal ansatz parameter values using a classical state-vector simulator with arbitrary measurement accuracy and then use those values to evaluate energy eigenstates of $^6$Li on a superconducting quantum chip from IBM. We post-process the results by using error mitigation techniques and are able to reproduce the exact energy with an error of 3.8% and 0.1% for the ground state and for the first excited state of $^6$Li, respectively., 9 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables

We study the near-threshold $J/\psi$ meson production on protons and nuclei by considering incoherent direct non-resonant $K^-p \to {J/\psi}\Lambda$ and two-step resonant ${K^-}p \to P_{cs}(4459)^0 \to {J/\psi}\Lambda$ charmonium production processes. We calculate the absolute excitation functions, energy and momentum distributions for the non-resonant, resonant and for the combined (non-resonant plus resonant) production of $J/\psi$ mesons off protons as well as off carbon and tungsten target nuclei at near-threshold incident antikaon energies by considering these elementary production channels as well as by assuming the spin-parity assignment of the hidden-charm resonance $P_{cs}(4459)^0$ with strangeness as $J^P=(3/2)^-$ within six different scenarios for the branching ratio $Br[P_{cs}(4459)^0 \to {J/\psi}\Lambda]$ of the decay $P_{cs}(4459)^0 \to {J/\psi}\Lambda$. We show that the combined observables considered reveal definite sensitivity to these scenarios, which means that they may be an important tool to provide further evidence for the existence of the pentaquark $P_{cs}(4459)^0$ resonance and to get valuable information on its decay rate to the ${J/\psi}\Lambda$ final state. Their measurements could be performed in the future at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

Nuclear properties across the chart of nuclides are key to improving and validating our understanding of the strong interaction in nuclear physics. We present high-precision mass measurements of neutron-rich Fe isotopes performed at the TITAN facility. The multiple-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MR-ToF-MS), achieving a resolving power greater than $600\,000$ for the first time, enabled the measurement of $^{63-70}$Fe, including first-time high-precision direct measurements ($\delta m/m \sim 10^{-7}$) of $^{68-70}$Fe, as well as the discovery of a long-lived isomeric state in $^{69}$Fe. These measurements are accompanied by both mean-field and ab initio calculations using the most recent realizations which enable theoretical assignment of the spin-parities of the $^{69}$Fe ground and isomeric states. Together with mean-field calculations of quadrupole deformation parameters for the Fe isotope chain, these results benchmark a maximum of deformation in the $N = 40$ island of inversion in Fe, and shed light on trends in level densities indicated in the newly-refined mass surface., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We present a strategy based on the step-scaling technique to study non-perturbatively thermal QCD up to very high temperatures. As a first concrete application, we compute the flavour non-singlet meson screening masses at 12 temperatures covering the range from $T \sim 1$ GeV up to $\sim 160$ GeV in the theory with three massless quarks. The calculation is carried out by Monte Carlo simulations on the lattice by considering large spatial extensions in order to have negligible finite volume effects. For each temperature we have simulated 3 or 4 values of the lattice spacing, so as to perform the continuum limit extrapolation with confidence at a few permille accuracy. Chiral symmetry restoration manifests itself in our results through the degeneracy of the vector and the axial vector channels and of the scalar and the pseudoscalar ones. In the entire range of temperatures explored, the meson screening masses deviate from the free theory result, $2 \pi T$, by at most a few percent. These deviations, however, cannot be explained by the known leading term in the QCD coupling constant $g$ up to the highest temperature, where other contributions are still very relevant. In particular the vector-pseudoscalar mass splitting turns out to be of $O(g^4)$ in the entire range explored, and it remains clearly visible up to the highest temperature, where the two screening masses are still significantly different within our numerical precision. The pattern of different contributions that we have found explains why it has been difficult in the past to match non-perturbative lattice results at $T \sim 1$ GeV with the analytic behaviour at asymptotically high temperatures., Comment: 32 pages, 5 figures. The European physical journal / C 82(8), 755 (2022). doi:10.1140/epjc/s10052-022-10715-0, Azimuthal correlations in $\mathrm {Z} +$jet production at large transverse momenta are computed by matching Parton-Branching (PB) TMD parton distributions and showers with NLO calculations via MCatNLO. The predictions are compared with those for dijet production in the same kinematic range. The azimuthal correlations $\Delta \phi $ between the Z boson and the leading jet are steeper compared to those in dijet production at transverse momenta $\mathcal{O}(100)$ GeV , while they become similar for very high transverse momenta ${{\mathcal {O}}}(1000)$ GeV . The different patterns of $\mathrm {Z} +$jet and dijet azimuthal correlations can be used to search for potential factorization-breaking effects in the back-to-back region, which depend on the different color and spin structure of the final states and their interferences with the initial states. In order to investigate these effects experimentally, we propose to measure the ratio of the distributions in $\Delta \phi $ for $\mathrm {Z} +$jet- and multijet production at low and at high transverse momenta, and compare the results to predictions obtained assuming factorization. We examine the role of theoretical uncertainties by performing variations of the factorization scale, renormalization scale and matching scale. In this study, the momentum-kick model is used to understand the ridge behaviours in dihadron $\Delta\eta$--$\Delta\varphi$ correlations recently reported by the LHC in high-multiplicity proton-proton (pp) collisions. The kick stand model is based on a momentum kick by leading jets to partons in the medium close to the leading jets. The medium where partons move freely is assumed in the model regardless of collision systems. This helps us apply the method to small systems like pp collisions in a simple way. Also, the momentum transfer is purely kinematic and this provides us a strong way to approach the ridge behaviour analytically. There are already several results with this approach in high-energy heavy-ion collisions from the STAR and PHENIX at RHIC and from the CMS at LHC. The momentum-kick model is extended to the recent ridge results in high-multiplicity pp collisions with the ATLAS and CMS at LHC. Nuclear charge radii are sensitive probes of different aspects of the nucleon-nucleon interaction and the bulk properties of nuclear matter; thus, they provide a stringent test and challenge for nuclear theory. The calcium region has been of particular interest, as experimental evidence has suggested a new magic number at $N = 32$ [1-3], while the unexpectedly large increases in the charge radii [4,5] open new questions about the evolution of nuclear size in neutron-rich systems. By combining the collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy method with $\beta$-decay detection, we were able to extend the charge radii measurement of potassium ($Z =19$) isotopes up to the exotic $^{52}$K ($t_{1/2}$ = 110 ms), produced in minute quantities. Our work provides the first charge radii measurement beyond $N = 32$ in the region, revealing no signature of the magic character at this neutron number. The results are interpreted with two state-of-the-art nuclear theories. For the first time, a long sequence of isotopes could be calculated with coupled-cluster calculations based on newly developed nuclear interactions. The strong increase in the charge radii beyond $N = 28$ is not well captured by these calculations, but is well reproduced by Fayans nuclear density functional theory, which, however, overestimates the odd-even staggering effect. These findings highlight our limited understanding on the nuclear size of neutron-rich systems, and expose pressing problems that are present in some of the best current models of nuclear theory., Comment: submitted version; revision accepted in Nature Physics

We compute the spectra of bremsstrahlung photons for different stopping scenarios which give rise to different initial charge-rapidity distributions. In the light of novel experimental opportunities that may arise with a new heavy-ion detector ALICE-3 at the CERN LHC, we discuss how to discriminate between these stopping scenarios and how to disentangle bremsstrahlung photons from other photon sources., 6 pages, 3 figures, contribution to the proceedings of Quark Matter 2022

This is performed in a perturbative expansion in the fine-structure constant and is broken down into pure QED, electroweak, and hadronic contributions. The pure QED contribution is by far the largest and has been evaluated up to and including with negligible numerical uncertainty. The electroweak contribution is suppressed by and only shows up at the level of the seventh significant digit. It has been evaluated up to two loops and is known to better than one percent. Hadronic contributions are the most difficult to calculate and are responsible for almost all of the theoretical uncertainty. The leading hadronic contribution appears at and is due to hadronic vacuum polarization, whereas at the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution appears. Given the low characteristic scale of this observable, these contributions have to be calculated with nonperturbative methods, in particular, dispersion relations and the lattice approach to QCD. The largest part of this review is dedicated to a detailed account of recent efforts to improve the calculation of these two contributions with either a data-driven, dispersive approach, or a first-principle, lattice-QCD approach. The final result reads and is smaller than the Brookhaven measurement by 3.7. The experimental uncertainty will soon be reduced by up to a factor four by the new experiment currently running at Fermilab, and also by the future J-PARC experiment. Opportunities for searches for phenomena beyond the Standard Model (BSM) using heavy-ions beams at high energies are outlined. Different BSM searches proposed in the last years in collisions of heavy ions, mostly at the Large Hadron Collider, are summarized. A few concrete selected cases are reviewed including searches for axion-like particles, anomalous $\tau$ electromagnetic moments, magnetic monopoles, and dark photons. Expectations for the achievable sensitivities of these searches in the coming years are given. Particle production and event topology are very strongly correlated in high-energy hadronic and nuclear collisions. Event topology is decided by the underlying particle production dynamics and medium effects. Transverse spherocity is an event shape observable, which has been used in pp and heavy-ion collisions to separate the events based on their geometrical shapes. It has the unique capability to distinguish between jetty and isotropic events. In this work, we have implemented transverse spherocity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV using A Multi-Phase Transport Model (AMPT). While awaiting for experimental explorations, we perform a feasibility study of dependence of transverse spherocity on some of the global observables in heavy-ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider energies. These global observables include the Bjorken energy density ($\epsilon_{\rm B_j}$), speed of sound ($c_{\rm s}^2$) in the medium and the kinetic freeze-out properties for different collision centralities. In this work we aim to gain qualitative insight on the far-from-equilibrium behavior of the gluon plasma produced in the early stages of a heavy-ion collision. It was recently discovered arXiv:1810.10554 that the distribution functions of quarks and gluons in QCD effective kinetic theory (EKT) exhibit self-similar "scaling" evolution with time-dependent scaling exponents long before those exponents reach their pre-hydrodynamic fixed-point values. In this work we shed light on the origin of this time-dependent scaling phenomenon in the small-angle approximation to the Boltzmann equation. We first solve the Boltzmann equation numerically and find that time-dependent scaling is a feature of this kinetic theory, and that it captures key qualitative features of the scaling of hard gluons in QCD EKT. We then proceed to study scaling analytically and semi-analytically in this equation. We find that an appropriate momentum rescaling allows the scaling distribution to be identified as the instantaneous ground state of the operator describing the evolution of the distribution function, and the approach to the scaling function is described by the decay of the excited states. That is to say, there is a frame in which the system evolves adiabatically. Furthermore, from the conditions for adiabaticity we can derive evolution equations for the time-dependent scaling exponents. In addition to the known free-streaming and BMSS fixed points, we identify a new "dilute" fixed point when the number density becomes small before hydrodynamization. Corrections to the fixed point exponents in the small-angle approximation agree quantitatively with those found previously in QCD EKT and arise from the evolution of the ratio between hard and soft scales., 38 pages, 8 figures

Beta decay is a well-established and efficient probe of nuclear structure and provides important information also for halo nuclei. Detailed decay studies of near-dripline nuclei are challenging, but are now feasible due to the technical progress during the last decades in isotope production as well as detection capabilities. The halo structure can change the dynamics of the decay process, most noticably when decays proceed directly to continuum states as seems to be the case in beta-delayed deuteron emission, a process only observed until now for the halo nuclei $^6$He and $^{11}$Li. The pronounced clustering in halo states also leaves an imprint on the decay patterns, although the isospin symmetry remains important; in several cases the isobaric analogue states of halo states have also been established. Beta-delayed particle emission channels can be expected to dominate the decays of heavier halo nuclei, if not in terms of branching ratio than certainly in terms of beta strength. A remaining challenge is to find experimental as well as theoretical tools to study the multi-neutron final states that appear for most neutron dripline nuclei.

We have estimated the dimensionless parameters such as Reynolds number ($Re$), Knudsen number ($Kn$) and Mach number ($Ma$) for a multi-hadron system by using the excluded volume hadron resonance gas (EVHRG) model along with Hagedorn mass spectrum to include higher resonances in the system. The size dependence of these parameters indicate that the system formed in proton+proton collisions may achieve thermal equilibrium making it unsuitable as a benchmark to analyze the properties of the system produced in heavy ion collisions at similar energies. While the magnitude of $Kn$ can be used to study the degree of thermalization and applicability of inviscid hydrodynamics, the variations of $Re$ and $Ma$ with temperature ($T$) and baryonic chemical potential ($μ_B$) assist to understand the change in the nature of the flow in the system. Indeed the nature of flow changes from laminar to turbulent as $Re$ increases and the system is characterized as incompressible for low $Ma (<, Same as the published version

Collinear laser spectroscopy is performed on the nickel isotopes Ni58-68,70, using a time-resolved photon counting system. From the measured isotope shifts, nuclear charge radii Rc are extracted and compared to theoretical results. Three ab initio approaches all employ, among others, the chiral interaction NNLOsat, which allows an assessment of their accuracy. We find agreement with experiment in differential radii δ⟨rc2⟩ for all employed ab initio methods and interactions, while the absolute radii are consistent with data only for NNLOsat. Within nuclear density functional theory, the Skyrme functional SV-min matches experiment more closely than the Fayans functional Fy(Δr,HFB). Our universe was born about 13.8 billion years ago from an extremely hot and dense singular point, in a process known as the Big Bang. The hot and dense matter which dominated the system within a few microseconds of its birth was in the form of a soup of elementary quarks and gluons, known as the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Signatures compatible with the formation of the QGP matter have experimentally been observed in heavy-ion (such as Au or Pb) collisions at ultra-relativistic energies. Recently, experimental data of proton-proton (pp) collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have also shown signals resembling those of the QGP formation, which made these studies quite stimulating as to how the collision of small systems features in producing the early universe signals. In this article, we report on some of the compelling experimental results and give an account of the present understanding. The feasibility of observing true tauonium, the bound state of two tau leptons, $\mathcal{T}_0\equiv(\tau^+\tau^-)_0$, via photon-photon collisions at $e^+e^-$ colliders and at the LHC, is studied. The production cross sections of the process $\gamma\gamma\to\mathcal{T}_0\to\gamma\gamma$ -- as well as those of all relevant backgrounds: spin-0 and 2 charmonium resonances decaying to diphotons, and light-by-light scattering -- are computed in the equivalent photon approximation for $e^+e^-$ collisions at BES III ($\sqrt{s} = 3.8$ GeV), Belle II ($\sqrt{s} = 10.6$ GeV), and FCC-ee ($\sqrt{s} = 91.2$ GeV), as well as for ultraperipheral p-p, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC. Despite small $\mathcal{T}_0$ production cross sections and a final state swamped by decays from overlapping pseudoscalar and tensor charmonium states -- the $\mathrm{\chi_{c2}}$, $\mathrm{\eta_{c}(2S)}$, and $\mathrm{\chi_{c0}}$ states have masses only 2.5, 84, and 139 MeV away, respectively, from the $\mathcal{T}_0$ peak -- evidence and observation of the ground state of the heaviest leptonium appears feasible at Belle II and FCC-ee, respectively, with in-situ high-precision measurements of the irreducible backgrounds., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings., Comment: Latex, 115 pages, 55 figures, 4 tables. v2: Review published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

6 pags., 5 figs., 2 tabs., The elastic and inelastic scattering of Be from C have been measured at an incident energy of 35 MeV. The inelastic scattering leading to the 4.439 MeV excited state of C has been measured for the first time. The experimental data cover an angular range of θ = 15-120. Optical model analyses were carried out with Woods-Saxon and double-folding potential using the density dependent M3Y (DDM3Y) effective interaction. The microscopic analysis of the elastic data indicates breakup channel coupling effect. A coupled-channel analysis of the inelastic scattering, based on collective form factors, shows that mutual excitation of both Be and C is significantly smaller than the single excitation of C. The larger deformation length obtained from the DWBA analysis could be explained by including the excitation of Be in a coupled-channel analysis. The breakup cross section of Be is estimated to be less than 10% of the reaction cross section. The intrinsic deformation length obtained for the C (4.439 MeV) state is δ = 1.37 fm. The total reaction cross section deduced from the analysis agrees very well with Wong's calculations for similar weakly bound light nuclei on C target., D. In recent years, exciting (indirect) hints for physics beyond the Standard Model (SM) have been accumulated. In particular, semi-leptonic $B$ decays show deviations from the SM predictions, which, due to the ratios $R(K^{(*)})$ and $R(D^{(*)})$ are obviously related to lepton flavour universality violation (LFUV). However, {we point out} there are more anomalies which admit an interpretation in terms of LFUV: The anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, the Cabibbo angle anomaly, the CMS measurements of non-resonant di-electrons, the difference of the forward-backward asymmetry in $B\to D^*\ell\nu$ and leptonic tau decays. In this letter we discuss the experimental and theoretical status of these anomalies, {compare their strength and weaknesses} and examine {and synthesize} how they can be explained in terms of possible extensions of the SM by new particles and interactions. Even though not all anomalies might be confirmed in the future, this unified view of the anomalies in terms of LFUV significantly strengthens their relevance, which is crucial in order to construct a convincing physics case for future colliders., Comment: 13 pages, 1 figure, to be published in IOP Conference Series special volume PACP2022

The electric quadrupole moment of $^{49}$Sc was measured by collinear laser spectroscopy at CERN-ISOLDE to be $Q_{\rm s}=-0.159(8)$ $e$b, and a nearly tenfold improvement in precision was reached for the electromagnetic moments of $^{47,49}$Sc. The single-particle behavior and nucleon-nucleon correlations are investigated with the electromagnetic moments of $Z=21$ isotopes and $N=28$ isotones as valence neutrons and protons fill the distinctive $0f_{7/2}$ orbit, respectively, located between magic numbers, 20 and 28. The experimental data are interpreted with shell-model calculations using an effective interaction, and ab-initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group calculations based on chiral interactions. These results highlight the sensitivity of nuclear electromagnetic moments to different types of nucleon-nucleon correlations, and establish an important benchmark for further developments of theoretical calculations., Comment: Accepted by Physics Letters B (2022)

We show that the same QCD formalism that accounts for the suppression of high-$p_T$ hadron and jet spectra in heavy-ion collisions predicts medium-enhanced production of $c\bar{c}$ pairs in jets., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

We explore the possibility of using the dead cone of heavy quarks as a region of the Lund plane where medium-induced gluon radiation can be isolated and characterised. The filling of the dead cone by medium-induced gluons is expected to be the result of the interplay between the minimum angle of such radiation due to transverse momentum broadening and the dead-cone angle. Since the measurement of a fully corrected Lund plane in heavy-ion collisions is currently challenging, we propose to use jet grooming techniques to identify a particular splitting in the jet tree that is both perturbative and sensitive to the dead-cone effect. To that end, we propose a new jet substructure groomer, dubbed Late-$k_t$, that selects the most collinear splitting in a QCD jet above a certain transverse momentum cutoff $k_{t,\rm{cut}}$. The role of $k_{t,\rm{cut}}$ is to guarantee perturbative splittings, while selecting the most collinear splitting enhances the sensitivity to mass effects. As a proof of concept, we study the angular distribution of the splitting tagged by Late-$k_t$ both analytically and with Monte Carlo simulations. First, we derive the logarithmic resummation structure in vacuum and demonstrate its capability to distinguish between inclusive and heavy-flavoured jets. Next, we extend the calculation for in-medium jets and show that medium-induced emissions lead to an enhancement of collinear emissions below the dead cone angle. Numerically, we demonstrate an excellent resilience of Late-$k_t$ against uncorrelated thermal background, thus confirming this observable as a potential candidate to unveil medium dynamics around the dead cone regime., Comment: v2: fixed typo in vacuum splitting function. We present a complete comparison of semi-inclusive νμ-C12 cross section measurements by T2K and MINERνA collaborations with the predictions from the SuSAv2-MEC model implemented in the neutrino-nucleus event generator GENIE and an unfactorized approach based on the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation. Results, that include cross sections as function of the final muon and proton kinematics and correlations between both, show that the agreement with data obtained by the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation approach, that accounts for final-state interactions, matches or improves GENIE-SuSAv2 predictions for very forward angles where scaling violations are relevant. We present a complete comparison of semi-inclusive $\nu_\mu$-$^{12}$C cross-section measurements by T2K and MINER$\nu$A collaborations with the predictions from the SuSAv2-MEC model implemented in the neutrino-nucleus event generator GENIE and an unfactorized approach based on the relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation (RDWIA). Results, that include cross sections as function of the final muon and proton kinematics and correlations between both, show that the agreement with data obtained by the RDWIA approach, that accounts for final-state interactions, matches or improves GENIE-SuSAv2 predictions for very forward angles where scaling violations are relevant.

We report here the results of a measurement of the scattered versus unscattered neutron fluence on polyethylene determined via neutron activation of multiple natural indium foils from a deuterium-deuterium (D-D) neutron generator. The neutrons were produced by the High Flux Neutron Generator (HFNG) at the University of California, Berkeley, a specially designed source to maximize neutron flux on a sample while minimizing the total neutron yield. During the experiment, approximately 108 n/s were produced with the energies at the indium foils ranging from 2.2 to 2.8MeV. Both the angle-integrated and the partial angle differential results are consistent with the predictions of the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport (MCNP) code, using ENDF/B-VII.1. This supports shielding calculations in the fast energy region with high-density polyethylene.

Neutrinoless double-beta decay is a forbidden, lepton-number-violating nuclear transition whose observation would have fundamental implications for neutrino physics, theories beyond the Standard Model and cosmology. In this review, we summarize the theoretical progress to understand this process, the expectations and implications under various particle physics models, as well as the nuclear physics challenges that affect the precise predictions of the decay half-life. Most strong-interaction resonances have decay channels involving three or more particles, including many of the recently discovered $X$, $Y$ and $Z$ resonances. In order to study such resonances from first principles using lattice QCD, one must understand finite-volume effects for three particles in the cubic box used in calculations. Here we review efforts to develop a three-particle quantization condition that relates finite-volume energies to infinite-volume scattering amplitudes. We describe in detail the three approaches that have been followed, and present new results on the relationship between the corresponding results. We present a lattice analysis of the light pseudoscalar mesons with consideration for the mixing between the flavor-neutral states π0, η and η′. We extract the masses and flavor compositions of the pseudoscalar meson nonet in nf=1+1+1 lattice QCD+QED around an SU(3)-flavor symmetric point, and observe flavor-symmetry features of the extracted data, along with preliminary extrapolation results for the flavor compositions at the physical point. A key result of this work is the observed mass splitting between the π0 and η on our ensembles, which is found to exhibit behavior that is simply related to the corresponding flavor compositions.

Nuclei with equal number of baryons but varying proton number (isobars) have many commonalities, but differ in both electric charge and nuclear structure. Relativistic collisions of such isobars provide unique opportunities to study the variation of the magnetic field, provided the nuclear structure is well understood. In this Letter we simulate collisions using several state-of-the-art parametrizations of the $^{96}_{40}$Zr and $^{96}_{44}$Ru isobars and show that a comparison with the exciting STAR measurement arXiv:2109.00131 of ultrarelativistic collisions can uniquely identify the structure of both isobars. This not only provides an urgently needed understanding of the structure of the Zirconium and Ruthenium isobars, but also paves the way for more detailed studies of nuclear structure using relativistic heavy ion collisions., 10 pages, 6 figures. New experiments to measure neutrinos in the far-forward region at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are under design or already in preparation. Two of them, FASER$\nu$ and SND@LHC, are expected to be active during Run 3 and have the potential to detect neutrinos that come from high-energy collisions in one of the LHC interaction points, extracted along the direction tangent to the beam line. Tau neutrinos and antineutrinos come predominantly from $D_s^\pm$ production in $pp$ collisions, followed by the leptonic decay of these mesons. Neutrino pseudorapidities in the range of $\eta>6.9$ and $\eta>8.9$ are relevant to these future experiments. At such pseudorapidities at high energies, theoretical predictions for the flux of tau neutrinos rely on parton distribution functions (PDFs) in a combination of very small and large parton$-x$ values. We evaluate PDF uncertainties in a next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculation of the flux of $\nu_\tau$ + $\bar{\nu}_\tau$ produced by $D_s^\pm$ decay in the far forward region at the LHC. The theoretical uncertainty associated with the 40 PDF sets of the PROSA19 group amounts to $\pm (20-30)$\% for the ($\nu_\tau$ + $\bar{\nu}_\tau$) number of charged-current (CC) events. Scale uncertainties are much larger, resulting in a range of CC event predictions from $\sim 70\%$ lower to $\sim 90\%$ higher than the central prediction. A comparison of the predictions with those obtained using as input the central PDFs from the 3-flavour NLO PDF sets of the CT14, ABMP16 and NNPDF3.1 collaborations show that far-forward neutrino energy distributions vary by as much as a factor of $\sim 2-4$ relative to the PROSA19 predictions at TeV neutrino energies. 244Pu has recently been discovered in deep-sea deposits spanning the past 10 Myr, a period that includes two 60Fe pulses from nearby supernovae. 244Pu is among the heaviest $r$-process products, and we consider whether it was created in the supernovae, which is disfavored by nucleosynthesis simulations, or in an earlier kilonova event that seeded 244Pu in the nearby interstellar medium that was subsequently swept up by the supernova debris. We discuss how these possibilities can be probed by measuring 244Pu and other $r$-process radioisotopes such as 129I and 182Hf, both in lunar regolith samples returned to Earth by missions such as Chang'e and Artemis, and in deep-sea deposits.

In addition to the existing strong indications for lepton flavour university violation (LFUV) in low energy precision experiments, CMS recently released an analysis of non-resonant di-lepton pairs which could constitute the first sign of LFUV in high-energy LHC searches. In this article we show that the Cabibbo angle anomaly, an (apparent) violation of first row and column CKM unitarity with $\approx3\,\sigma$ significance, and the CMS result can be correlated and commonly explained in a model independent way by the operator $[Q_{\ell q}^{(3)}]_{1111} = (\bar{\ell}_1\gamma^{\mu}\sigma^I\ell_1)(\bar{q}_1\gamma_{\mu}\sigma^Iq_1)$. This is possible without violating the bounds from the non-resonant di-lepton search of ATLAS (which interestingly also observed slightly more events than expected in the electron channel) nor from $R(\pi)=\pi \to\mu\nu/\pi \to e \nu$. We find a combined preference for the new physics hypothesis of $4.5\,\sigma$ and predict $1.0004, Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Lattice QCD calculations of two-nucleon interactions have been underway for about a decade, but still haven't reached the pion mass regime necessary for matching onto effective field theories and extrapolating to the physical point. Furthermore, results from different methods, including the use of the Luscher formalism with different types of operators, as well as the HALQCD potential method, do not agree even qualitatively at very heavy pion mass. We investigate the role that different operators employed in the literature may play on the extraction of spectra for use within the Luscher method. We first explore expectations from Effective Field Theory solved within a finite volume, for which the exact spectrum may be computed given different physical scenarios.
