First paragraph: This book is an important contribution to our knowledge and understanding of rural China in a time of economic slowdowns, continued urbanization, and growing political unease in China. In this light, a focus on food and farming, particularly the organic sector, is welcome as it shrinks the big picture into one of its constituent parts, which permits for a more digestible view of the nature, potential, and limitations of China’s alternative food sector. . . .

First paragraph: The legalization of hemp provides a new opportunity for small farmers in the U.S., and coming on the heels of trade wars and depressed crop returns, the timing couldn’t be better. However, while hemp production could support a decent living for these small farmers, production opportunities such as this will draw interest from producers of all sizes, which may determine its profitability. Hemp, just like any other crop, can be produced on a massive scale. The industrial system stands at the ready with machines, inputs, land-grant agricultural research universities, transportation systems, markets, and capital to plant hemp on large acreages and then process, market, and deliver it to consumers. Once unleashed, the vast majority of the crop could be grown on large acreages under industrial management, mechanized, and with few people on the land. Organic hemp could be another option offered by the industrial model, but could be equally mechanized. Within five to 10 years, any current profit advantage of hemp to farmers could diminish to the low level of market returns offered by other industrial crops like corn or beans. . . . American Indian tribes historically survived on hunting, gathering, and farming activities. As federal policy changed, reservations were established, which limited some of these hunting and gathering activities. Nevada is home to Washoe, Shoshone, and Paiute American Indians. There are 19 federally recognized American Indian tribes with 27 reservations and colonies geographically dispersed across the state of Nevada. Several of these reservations are near Nevada’s small, rural towns where access to fruits and vegetables is limited. Often, the residents of small rural towns next to the reservation are unaware of the tribal cultural history. University of Nevada Cooperative Extension created an elementary nutrition education program called Veggies for Kids, for use in reservation schools and off-reservation schools under the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program–Education (SNAP-Ed). The Veggies for Kids program utilizes traditional foods, tribal language, and gardening experiences as building blocks to introduce healthy eating and increase fruit and vegetable intake among elementary students. For the 2017–2018 school year, pre- and post-test data were collected from 45 American Indian kindergarten students attending schools on reservations and 486 kindergarten students in off-reservation schools located next to a reservation. Methods of data analysis included descriptive statistics, paired sample t-tests, and nonparametric McNemar testing. Results from the kindergarten data showed an increase in test scores of students correctly identifying USDA’s MyPlate food groups, naming selected fruits and vegetables provided during the program, self-reporting water consumption, and selecting physical activity. Cumulative student test scores for all kindergarten data were statistically significant at p-value

espanol? EnglishHow are the peri-urban residential areas of medium-size Latin American cities developing? How can the frequently subtle differences between some forms of growth characterized by their fragmentation, dispersion and low density, be defined? This research developed a spatial analysis methodology that assessed the residential expansion of Mendoza, Argentina between 1986 and 2010. Mendoza and its metropolitan area have followed a diffuse city model characteristic of medium-size Latin American cities, expanding towards the peri-urban area with the help of favorable socio-economic conditions in the period studied. The analysis defined morphological units associated with variables that made it possible through statistical analysis to characterize these new forms of growth. The results show development based on small isolated nuclei that are low in density and residential in use. Slight differences in certain aspects enabled the identification of six different models: the local unit, the large unit, the gated community, the semi-gated community, the vertical gated community and the country unit. These differences shed light on the success of the units as urban spaces capable of connecting with their surroundings and attracting urban facilities.

Wild foods are recognized to contribute to diet and food security through enhancing the availability of local, diverse, and nonmarket food sources. We investigated the contribution of wild foods to diet, food security, and cultural identity in a Native American[1] community in the context of climate change. Structured interviews were conducted with low-income residents of the Flathead Indian Reservation[2] in Northwestern Montana who participate in the federal Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations, also known by participants as ‘Commodities.’ Responses to structured questions were analyzed for frequency, and open-ended responses were coded and analyzed to identify prevalent themes. Our analysis indicated that half of participants were food insecure. Approximately 28% of participants engaged in at least one wild food procurement activity, including hunting, fishing, and harvesting. On average, participants who engaged in one or more wild food procurement activities were more food secure than those who did not. Results highlight the multidimensional valuation of wild foods by participants including taste, freshness, nutritional quality, being a traditional community practice, and providing a sense of self-sufficiency. Climate change is perceived by participants to be adversely impacting wild food systems due to increased variability in seasonality and precipitation and increased incidences of wild fire. Findings point to the need for community-based strategies to strengthen wild food knowledge toward enhancing food sovereignty in Native American communities, in the context of climate change. [1] The term ‘Native American’ was determined to be the preferred term for referencing the Native American community in this study, based on consultation from our community advisory board. [2] The term ‘Flathead Indian Reservation’ was determined to be the preferred term for referencing the location in which this study was held, based on consultation from our community advisory board. espanolLa transformacion del mundo agricola pampeanopuso en evidencia la intima relacion entre dimensiones politicas, institucionales y economicas. EnglishTransformation in pampean agricultural world show the intimate relationship between its political, institutional and economic dimensions. This paper aims to analyse the crossing of two dimensions. On the one hand, the regulatory forms, that is, the set of public institutions that affect the development of agricultural activity in Argentina and, on the other hand, the socio–productive structure, that is, the main characteristics of actors that are implied in the agricultural subsystem. Both dimensions keep a close relationship although mediated by the different scales in which they operate. In the first case, of national character and in the second one of local or regional character. The article attempts possible structural articulations from the analysis of the changes in demographic and socio–labor variables, produced in concomitance with the agricultural transformation and the changes in the regulatory forms that gave it the institutional framework.

EnglishFrom the beginning of the 21st century, the Uruguay knows agricultural unpublished dynamics, with innovations and important changes in the agricultural sector (with the soybean as motive culture) and in the forest chain (plantations of eucalyptus) that, in turn, have strong implications on the livestock production, traditional activity. The approach is basically empirical. It comes near to an approximation of the changes that are given, putting in evidence the irreversibility of some of the innovations and the permanency of certain learnings and factors of change that concern the whole agrarian system and other more traditional productions.

EnglishThe expansion of soybean cultivation in Brazil occurred mainly after 1940, when it began to be produced for commercial purposes in the southern states of the country. With the growing demand for grain in the national and international markets, cultivation was expanded to the Midwest, especially in the 1970s, when new seed varieties were developed to adapt to the Cerrado biome. In the mid‒1990s, a new expansion took place towards the areas of some states of the North and Northeast of Brazil, with emphasis on the region known as MATOPIBA. This expansion can be visualized by the official IBGE data that indicate the trends of this historical process, and this article was based on these data to trace the course and indicate a possible temporality for this social and historical phenomenon so significant for Brazil. portuguesA expansao do cultivo da soja no Brasil ocorreu depois de 1940, quando passou a ser produzida para fins comerciais nos estados do sul do pais. Introduction The paper investigates the relation between spatial justice and recognition. With this respect, it focuses on rhetorics of recognition, namely discourses, narratives and slogans put in place by actors who produce a territorial identity in order to be recognized in their peculiar and different characters. Case description The case-study employed is the Riace model, a worldwide known example of refugees and asylum seekers hosting and welcoming practice in Italy. Fieldnotes, public statements and newspaper articles were used to investigate both narratives through which Riace’s identity was produced and how this identity shaped Riace’s rhetorics of recognition within the context of a conflict between the local administration and the national government. Discussion and evaluation The paper shows how claims for recognition may drive towards negative outputs. Specifically, in the case of Riace, claims for diversity re-affirmed path-dependency and conditions of marginalization as a result of a depersonalised place-based approach and logics of exception. Conclusions Finally, the paper suggests that researchers should avoid considering diversity as a value per se in order to address spatial justice issues. Moreover, it suggests that rhetorics of recognition may help both in case of conflicting rationalities and to formulate situated ethical judgments.

The ever increasing urban energy consumption has always been an important issue of urban energy security. Citizen plays critical role in shaping the energy consumption. Therefore, citizen perspective can give significant impact to urban energy security evaluation. This research aims to provide a systematic framework to measure urban energy security taking into account the perspective of citizen and showcase its implementation in a case of Bandung city. The proposed framework is a straight five stages process as follow; (1) establishing the urban context, (2) defining energy security relevant to the context, (3), determining dimensions of energy security , (4) determining indicators and and metrics, and (5) the final stage is calculating energy security. The implementation case shows Bandung’s energy security is at Middle Low status. It also verify that the framework is operationally viable and it can capture the significance of citizen perspective.

Seu livro A different kind of animal. How culture transformed our species (2017) não é apenas um veículo para as ideias de Boyd sobre o papel da cultura na evolução humana, mas também um espaço de debate.

Jabodetabek and Sarbagita have the highest worker commuter population in Indonesia. However, Jabodetabek has various and larger coverage of public transport than Sarbagita. This study also analyzes the relationship between the usage of specific transport modes and commuting stress. Multiple logistic regression models have been estimated using data of both Jabodetabek Commuter Survey and Sarbagita Commuter Survey. Using logistic regressions, the results show that mode choices, gender, and travel time have a significant effect on commuting stress. The analysis also indicates that both in high impedance and low impedance metropolitans, car commuting is perceived to be more stressful than non-car commuting. In a condition of restricted mode choices, commuters who use cars have a greater probability of commuting stress. Furthermore, the findings of this study imply limitation of car usage and as an evaluation of the policy of opening toll roads as a solution to urban congestion.

Food sovereignty has recently emerged as a means of addressing pervasive food-related problems in many Indigenous communities in Canada as well as around the world. This is particularly important for Indigenous people who still face threats to their food systems directly stemming from colonialism. Stories of community-based Indigenous food sovereignty are presented in this paper. Outcomes are summarized using a circle metaphor that describes four key elements of Indigenous food sovereignty that emerged from this research: history, connection to the land, relationships, and identity. Indigenous food sovereignty requires that we move beyond access to food, and critically interrogate Indigenous relationships to food. This is founded upon the notion that people should be able to be self-determinant in their own food and cultural traditions. Progress requires a shift in how Indigenous food relationships are understood and incorporating Indigenous worldviews and perspectives as part of a larger resurgence movement.

There is a high rate of intimate partner violence (IPV) in urban settings. Previous research has found that masculine gender role stress (MGRS) and anger predict IPV. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of anger on the relationship between MGRS and IPV. The sample included 366 urban male college students across Java, who completed an online questionnaire. Measures used were the MGRS-A, BPAQ, and CTS2. Using Hayes’ moderation analysis, the model obtained a significant fit (R2 = .1039, F (3,362) = 13.994, p = .000). Both MGRS (p = .0264) and trait anger (p = .000) predicted IPV. The interaction between MGRS and anger was not significant (p = .0797). However, examination of the conditional effects revealed that there was a significant association between MGRS and IPV at moderate (p = .0264) and high levels of trait anger (p = .0058), but not at low levels of anger. Future studies should investigate the roles of anger expression, control behavior, and anger rumination.

We are facing a paradigm shift in the production of housing, and it is precisely in this transition where contexts as different as The Netherlands and Chile find a common denominator: the problem of affordability and general discontent in the face of a supply that is increasingly remote from the economic capacity and needs of people. Access to housing has become a scarce commodity. In a growing context of demands for the right to the city, the provision of affordable housing has become such a situation that it has promoted the inhabitants to position themselves as protagonists - seeking solutions that cope with the housing problem through collaborative processes. In Europe these processes have re-emerged as a reaffirmation of self-determination in response to the commodification and standardization of housing. However, in Chile the search has been more related to means of collaborative survival through the dynamics of allegamiento and self-organization in pericentral areas. From this common point of departure, the initial chapters of the book identify collaborative processes, alternating experiences both in Chile and in Europe. The European case, reviewed from the Dutch social housing model and the re-emergence of collaborative housing models, provides three important points of reflection when traditional and consolidated systems face novel and emerging models. First, the opportunity that arises from the hybridization of both systems and cooperation among different actors. Second, the importance of having a cultural change, followed by regulatory frameworks, to ensure the implementation and subsequent massification of new models. Third, despite the legal and operational barriers, the European experience has shown that self-organized and self-managed models are possible, necessary and effective when housing demands have not been satisfy by the State nor by the market., Research in Urbanism Series, Vol. 5 (2019): Housing and Urban Regeneration of Deprived Neighborhoods in Santiago

This chapter briefly reflects on European social housing models and mainly discusses opportunities for housing cooperatives in the Dutch housing system. Since the introduction of the new Housing Act in 2015 in the Netherlands, there are legal opportunities for social housing tenants to form cooperatives. However, in practice, this does not happen a lot yet. From our analysis of the Dutch housing systems it is concluded that it is unlikely that it will take place on a larger scale, among others due to a lack of tradition (path dependency) and support from housing corporations – the main owners of social housing in the Netherlands., Research in Urbanism Series, Vol. 5 (2019): Housing and Urban Regeneration of Deprived Neighborhoods in Santiago

The extension of Santiago’s metro line towards pericentral neighbouhods of social housing in 9x18 lots entails a process of densification and gentrification with the challenge of planning urban regeneration with territorial equity and social integration principles. This requires private/public management and investment at national, district and neighbourhood scale, that approaches to the neighbourhood improvement with maximum standards and high-quality densification that guarantee the permanence of current residents. In this chapter, measures for the development of public space and sustainable mobility are proposed, as well for the rehabilitation and construction of housing for homeowners, extended-households and new residents., Research in Urbanism Series, Vol. 5 (2019): Housing and Urban Regeneration of Deprived Neighborhoods in Santiago

Collective habitat has been part of the housing history in Chile through the poor inhabitant's incursion in the city since more than one century. First, as round rooms, ‘cites’ and ‘conventillos’, and afterwards as ‘colectivos’. Later in informal settlements that evolved into self-organised and self-built neighbourhoods. During the last decades, in social condominiums. This form of co-habitation has adopted different shapes according to their historical moment, the spatial configuration of the places that inhabitants stayed or co-produced, the social and/or political organisation, the political and institutional context in which they were subscribed. Ones better than others were simultaneously embracing and configuring a specific model of habitat in which the base of ‘the collective’ is the historical memory, the tradition of organisation, and the parental and neighbours’ networks. Today, these collective ways of living remain in our cities opening paths for their consideration in programmes and projects of collective inhabit in the country., Research in Urbanism Series, Vol. 5 (2019): Housing and Urban Regeneration of Deprived Neighborhoods in Santiago

Turkey hosts more refugees than any other country in the world. Incoming numbers have increased steadily since the outbreak of the Syrian war in 2011. This raises enormous challenges for the host country, not least with regard to the provision of healthcare. This article examines the developments in the light of stratified membership theories. More specifically, it asks how far the healthcare system in Turkey can be categorised as a system of stratified membership for different groups of urban refugees, focusing on refugees from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. Following a theoretical debate about stratification in the provision of social rights, 16 semi-structured interviews with experts and active participants were carried out in Ankara to understand the situation of urban refugees in need of healthcare. The results confirm assumptions of stratified membership theories which understand citizenship in a broad sense as comprising the interconnected dynamics between social rights, legal status and identity requirements. Next to ethnic categories of origin defining the status in Turkey, factors such as language skills or the individual economic situation also play crucial roles for stratified membership both as an empirical fact and as a constructed practice.

Despite growing calls for food system transformation, the need to develop a vision to guide that transformation is sometimes overlooked. Vision is essential to inspire, mobilize, and keep a collective of people on track toward their goals. Individual visions can be exhilarating, but the visions that create change are taken up by large groups or movements of movements. A vision is a beginning for transformation, but it requires policy that enables it to be enacted, ideally through democratic processes. The vision, buttressed by policy and democratic governance, is what determines where people are able to buy food, how much they pay, whether farmers earn decent incomes, and whether the food is healthy. Without vision, policies are likely to be incoherent or to work at cross-purposes, as has happened in the farm bill and the European Union’s Common Agricultural Policy. A range of visions generated at different scales, from autonomous community to state to region, can serve as examples for people committed to food system transformation.

This introduction to the special issue provides a critical state-of-the-art of the literature on second-generation migrants which has hitherto subsumed the case of the children of refugees. It highlights the theoretical and methodological orientations taken by the literature and examines the main findings on the second generation’s social, educational, economic, cultural and inter-generational lives, before turning to the few findings available on conditions and performances of children of refugees. The editorial concludes by suggesting gaps in our knowledge and areas for future research.

Introduction In 1989 in Poland the transition period was initiated, which caused a profound change not only of a political and institutional nature, but also an economic change of local labour markets and urban space. One of the most prominent change was de-industrialization, encompassing also the capital city. Case description The paper describes the change of an area in Praga, developed for decades on the basis of industry and in last 25 years losing this character. 29 former factories have been identified and described, varying in current functions—from modern factories, to residential areas, to unused sites. There are several actors present: municipal, enterprises (both of local, country and international level), free-lancers and NGOs. The sites’ transformation analysis was based on the public records, focus groups and interviews and professional experience. Discussion and evaluation Authors present the changes in ownership and use and discuss the role of municipal and private actors in the structural and spatial change in the area. The case is presented within the framework of the productive city model and the relations between the local and supra-local context of the re-development. Conclusions Analyzed area may profit of the delay in public and private investments by establishing new productive ventures, based on the existing tangible and intangible heritage of the place. Public sector should be the main player in such urban adaptive re-use. However, the authors found no coherent municipal policy towards the chosen sites, their heritage and potential. The existence of such a potential for modern form of a productive city and the need for new policies answering better to grass-root activities and socio-economic potential of the area is the main conclusion of the analysis.

In recent years, forcibly displaced populations have attracted enormous media attention as an increasing number of disasters and political conflicts push more and more people to move away from their homes and seek refuge and opportunities in other places. At the same time, political nervousness about the financial and institutional capability of ‘receiving’ locations to adequately respond to the needs of these large-scale population movements contributes to the shrinking space for thinking about the rights and needs of people on the move. It is precisely because of these global trends that the plight of forcibly displaced populations is becoming more precarious and vulnerable, yet standard social protection provision rarely attends to the plight of these people. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the remit and implications for including a consideration of forcibly displaced populations (including internally displaced people, refugees and asylum seekers) within social protection policy and programming. Drawing on a limited number of recent initiatives, we suggest some ways in which social protection can be ‘opened’ for these groups.

First paragraphs: We’re a part of this land, and a necessary part of it. The land needs us, and the planet loves us, and we don’t know how to be a part of that anymore, in a real sense, in a physical sense. A coming back to that is something that we as humans have to figure out together. —Laxlaxtkʷ, Dr. Jeannette Armstrong (quoted in Hall, 2007) Where It All Begins What is your first memory of being on the land? Is it picking berries? Digging up carrots in the garden? Maybe it’s fishing with your dad. Take a moment and let the memory fill your senses. This is what “place-based” means. It means remembering where we come from so that we may understand more fully where we are today. I come from the Okanagan Nation. My people, the Syilx/Okanagan, are a transboundary tribe separated at the 49th parallel by the border between Canada and the United States. Our Nation comprises seven member communities in the Southern Interior of British Columbia and the Colville Confederated Tribes in Washington. We share the same land, the same nsyilxcәn language, culture, and customs. We are a distinct and sovereign Nation. We are deeply rooted in our land and waters. Our territory is a diverse and beautiful landscape of deserts and lakes, alpine forests and endangered grasslands that extends over 17 million acres (69,000 square kilometers) from just north of Revelstoke, BC, south to the vicinity of Wilbur, Washington. Today we continue to assert our jurisdiction and responsibility over the stewarding of our lands. Our nsyilxcәn language and our Syilx/Okanagan culture respectfully honor the natural laws of the tmixw[1]—that which gives us life. . . . [1] tmixw is the sacred life force of all living things.
