The oxides of transition, post-transition and rare-earth metals have a long history of robust and fast responsive recognition elements for electronic, optical, and gravimetric devices. A wide range of applications successfully utilized pristine or doped metal oxides and polymer-oxide hybrids as nanostructured recognition elements for the detection of biologically relevant molecules, harmful organic substances, and drugs as well as for the investigative process control applications. An overview of the selected recognition applications of molecularly imprinted sol-gel phases, metal oxides and hybrid nanomaterials composed of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) and metal oxides is presented herein. The formation and fabrication processes for imprinted sol-gel layers, metal oxides, MIP-coated oxide nanoparticles and other MIP/oxide nanohybrids are discussed along with their applications in monitoring bioorganic analytes and processes. The sensor characteristics such as dynamic detection range and limit of detection are compared as the performance criterion and the miniaturization and commercialization possibilities are critically discussed.

The first part describes detailed structural, optical and theoretical studies which lead to the identification of the chemical structure and the origin of the universal blue fluorescence of CDs. The second part presents a new method enabling the control of the structure and the chemical properties of the polymeric CDs, thus offering a highly versatile toolbox for the design of CDs suitable for applications in sensing and medical applications. The third part focusses on the preparation of novel hybrid materials based on CDs and transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS2 and WS2) para su uso en aplicaciones de photocatalysis and energy conversion., [ES] En este trabajo se cubren tres aspectos fundamentales de la investigación en el campo de los carbón dots (CDs). A través de detallados estudios estructurales, caracterización óptica y cálculos teóricos, la primera parte de la tesis consigue identificar las estructuras orgánicas y las fuerzas que producen la fluorescencia azul. En la segunda parte, se ha presentado un nuevo método para controlar la estructura y las propiedades químicas de nanopartículas poliméricas, ofreciendo una herramienta muy versátil para el diseño de materiales basados en CDs como sensores y vectores de fármacos. Catalyst deactivation is a persistent problem not only for the scientific community but also in industry. Isolated single-site heterogeneous catalysts have shown great promise to overcome these problems. Here, a versatile anchoring strategy for molecular complex immobilization on a broad range of semiconducting or insulating metal oxide (e.g. titanium dioxide, mesoporous silica, cerium oxide, and tungsten oxide) nanoparticles to synthesize isolated single-site catalysts has been studied systematically. An oxidatively stable anchoring group, maleimide, is shown to form covalent linkages with surface hydroxyl functionalities of metal oxide nanoparticles by photoclick chemistry. The nanocomposites have been thoroughly characterized by techniques including UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The IR spectroscopic studies confirm the covalent linkages between the maleimide group and surface hydroxyl functionalities of the oxide nanoparticles. The hybrid nanomaterials function as highly efficient catalysts for essentially quantitative oxidations of terminal and internal alkenes, and show molecular catalyst product selectivities even in more eco-friendly solvents. XAS studies verify the robustness of the catalysts after several catalytic cycles. We have applied the photoclick anchoring methodology to precisely control the deposition of a luminescent variant of our catalyst on the metal oxide nanoparticles. Overall, we demonstrate a general approach to use irradiation to anchor molecular complexes on oxide nanoparticles to create recyclable, hybrid, single-site catalysts that function with high selectivity in a broad range of solvents. We have achieved a facile, spatially and temporally controllable photoclick method that can potentially be extended to other ligands, catalysts, functional molecules, and surfaces. Nanomaterials and ionic liquids (ILs) have very attractive properties for improved analytical preconcentration methods. Thus, ILs have been used as excellent tools to functionalize nanomaterials, giving them specific chemical properties for higher selectivity, extraction efficiency and extended re-utilization in preconcentration. Moreover, incorporation of IL-nanomaterial hybrids in miniaturized solid phase and liquid phase microextraction procedures is being increasingly exploited to obtain high analytical recoveries while developing environmentally friendly analytical methods. In this review, the design and application of innovative and efficient analytical methods for sensitive and selective determination of inorganic and organic analytes is described. The synthesis of some IL-nanomaterial hybrids is presented along with a revision of the most important synergistic physicochemical properties useful for the extraction of analytes. Finally, practical considerations concerning the application of IL-nanomaterial hybrids for the development of modern analytical separation and preconcentration techniques are fully discussed in this work. Biosensors are very important for detecting target molecules with high accuracy, selectivity, and signal-to-noise ratio. Biosensors developed using biomolecules such as enzymes or nucleic acids which were used as the probes for detecting the target molecules were studied widely due to their advantages. For example, enzymes can react with certain molecules rapidly and selectively, and nucleic acids can bind to their complementary sequences delicately in nanoscale. In addition, biomolecules can be immobilized and conjugated with other materials by surface modification through the recombination or introduction of chemical linkers. However, these biosensors have some essential limitations because of instability and low signal strength derived from the detector biomolecules. Functional nanomaterials offer a solution to overcome these limitations of biomolecules by hybridization with or replacing the biomolecules. Functional nanomaterials can give advantages for developing biosensors including the increment of electrochemical signals, retention of activity of biomolecules for a long-term period, and extension of investigating tools by using its unique plasmonic and optical properties. Up to now, various nanomaterials were synthesized and reported, from widely used gold nanoparticles to novel nanomaterials that are either carbon-based or transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD)-based. These nanomaterials were utilized either by themselves or by hybridization with other nanomaterials to develop highly sensitive biosensors. In this review, highly sensitive biosensors developed from excellent novel nanomaterials are discussed through a selective overview of recently reported researches. We also suggest creative breakthroughs for the development of next-generation biosensors using the novel nanomaterials for detecting harmful target molecules with high sensitivity.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) exhibit great potentials in the fields of materials science, biomedicine, tissue engineering, catalysis, energy, environmental science, and analytical science due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Usually, CNFs with flat, mesoporous, and porous surfaces can be synthesized by chemical vapor deposition and electrospinning techniques with subsequent chemical treatment. Meanwhile, the surfaces of CNFs are easy to modify with various materials to extend the applications of CNF-based hybrid nanomaterials in multiple fields. In this review, we focus on the design, synthesis, and sensor applications of CNF-based functional nanomaterials. The fabrication strategies of CNF-based functional nanomaterials by adding metallic nanoparticles (NPs), metal oxide NPs, alloy, silica, polymers, and others into CNFs are introduced and discussed. In addition, the sensor applications of CNF-based nanomaterials for detecting gas, strain, pressure, small molecule, and biomacromolecules are demonstrated in detail. This work will be beneficial for the readers to understand the strategies for fabricating various CNF-based nanomaterials, and explore new applications in energy, catalysis, and environmental science.

We investigate a new case of a self-assembly-stimulated self-assembly in which a triblock polypeptide is combined with a anionic coordination polymer of a dipicolinic acid bis-ligand, and d- or f- block metal ions like ZnII or EuIII. The polypeptide not only has a silk-like domain that can fold and stack, but also a C-terminal cationic sequence by which it can interact with the supramolecular (coordination) polyanion. In the presence of all three ingredients (polypeptide, bis-ligand, and metal ions), we observe the initiation and slow growth of well-defined metal-containing nanorods of up to 150 nm in length, proving that self-assembly of the polypeptide is triggered by the self-assembly of the coordination polyelectrolyte and vice versa. The particles, which have a striking resemblance to rod-like viruses, are stable up to 1.2 m NaCl, and can be made fluorescent when lanthanides like EuIII are used, showing the potential to exploit functional properties and applications of virus-like supramolecular structures. The rapid development of nanotechnology has offered novel therapeutic and diagnostic strategies to overcome limitations of conventional therapy. Creation of the materials at nanometer scale and manipulation of their properties have enabled to employ them in a number of biological applications such as in controlled drug delivery and bioimaging. Within this thesis, the physical parameters for construction of multifunctional nanoparticles were summarized and the application potential of polymeric nanoparticles and liposomes as a drug carrier and imaging vehicle were evaluated. Initially, amphiphilic hyperbranched copolymer as a drug nanocarrier was designed with dual peptides which can specifically bind to integrin αvβ3 with RGD, while Cys-TAT facilitates penetration through the cell membrane. After drug (doxorubicin (DOX)) encapsulation with detailed characterization, the applicability of the polymeric micelles was tested in glioblastoma and breast cancer cell lines that are αvβ3 integrin positive and negative, respectively. Thus, the effects of targeting ligand on the surface of nanoparticle were analyzed in terms of cellular uptake as well as toxicity. Targeted drug-loaded micelles showed stronger inhibition on the integrin αvβ3 receptor overexpressed cells compared to the drug-loaded micelles without peptides on the surface. Finally, liposome-nanoparticle hybrids were designed for co-delivery of imaging and therapeutic agents. Both hydrophobic nanoparticle (quantum dot (QD)) and hydrophilic drug (topotecan (TPT)) were encapsulated into liposomes and their further characterization was performed in detail. Drug release profile was observed under neutral and acidic conditions. In vitro analysis of the formulations was performed on cervical cancer cells. As a result, even though no targeting ligand was used on liposome surface, liposomal formulations were uptaken to the cells more efficiently compared to the free drug. Thus, the bioavailability of the imaging agent and therapeutic efficiency of the drug were enhanced by using theranostic liposome-QD hybrids. Overall, novel multifunctional polymeric and liposomal tools for drug delivery and bioimaging were designed and developed with different targeting strategies. These approaches might offer new possibilities for development of novel platforms in nanomedicine.

International audience; Filling double-walled carbon nanotubes with iodine and various metal iodides (metals, alkali metals and transition metals) by the molten phase method was performed and the influence of possibly relevant chemical and physical properties of the filling materials on the filling rate was investigated. It was found, within the metal iodides series, that the filling rate can be mainly related to the redox potential (E MIx/M) of the filling material. Other parameters such as the possible formation of dimers, surface tension, or the early release of iodine may also play an additional role in the filling process.

Filling carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has been considered as an easy approach to synthesize various nanocrystals since the inserted materials are forced to adopt a nearly one-dimensional morphology arising from their very high aspect ratio, especially in the case of single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs) or double-walled CNTs (DWCNTs). Nanocrystals/nanowires of transition metals, especially those with very narrow diameters, are predicted to exhibit peculiar magnetic property differing from the bulk metals. Filling CNTs provides a possible way for the synthesis of such metal nanocrystals/nanowires. There are several methods for filling CNTs including the in situ method, gas phase method, molten phase method, solution method, etc. Among them, molten phase has been very popular for filling various types of nanotubes due to the possibility to reach high filling rates, simplicity and versatility. However, for materials with high melting point such as metals, it is difficult to insert them into CNTs directly. To solve this problem, we also took advantage of the inner cavity of CNTs which not only templates the growth but also acts as a nanoreactor in order to perform chemical reactions. The insertion of materials with high melting point is typically achieved by first filling CNTs with a precursor, and then transforming the precursor into the desired 1D nanostructure by post-treatments. In this thesis, (i) filling DWCNTs with iodine and various halides via the molten phase method was performed and the influence of the relevant physical and chemical properties of the halides on the filling rate was investigated. The role of the redox potential as a main parameter driving the filling efficiency is pointed out, and explained; (ii) peculiar structures of the nanocrystals confined within DWCNTs were imaged by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and corresponding modeling of the observed crystal nanostructures and related TEM images were proposed; (iii) different in situ transformations on the iodide-filled DWCNTs were attempted and the chemical composition of the encapsulated 1D nanocrystals before and after post-filling treatments was systematically identified by means of electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).; Le remplissage des nanotubes de carbone (NTC) est considéré comme une approche relativement simple permettant de synthétiser des nanocristaux du fait de l'effet de confinement 1D imposé par la cavité centrale des NTC, qui peut être seulement de l'ordre du nanomètre ou moins, notamment dans le cas des NTC monoparoi et en particulier des NTC biparois (DWCNT) sur lesquels nous avons concentré nos efforts. De tels nanocristaux devraient avoir des propriétés physiques (électriques, magnétiques) différentes de celles de leurs équivalents à l'état massif du fait de la modification de la coordinence des atomes ou des ions les composant. Parmi les différentes méthodes existantes pour le remplissage des NTC, (in situ pendant la synthèse, a posteriori à partir de solutions), la méthode faisant intervenir des matériaux fondus est la plus populaire pour le remplissage par des matériaux inorganiques. Elle permet en effet d'atteindre des taux de remplissage raisonnablement élevés et demeure assez simple à mettre en œuvre. Cependant, elle fait preuve d'un certain nombre de limitations (techniques) qui posent problème dans le cas de matériaux à haut point de fusion (typiquement > 1000°C), dont la réactivité avec le carbone à haute température pourrait être gênante (carboréduction des oxydes par exemples), ou encore dont la faible mouillabilité vis-à-vis du carbone à l'état fondu est rédhibitoire (métaux par exemple). Il est possible de palier à cette difficulté en procédant par étapes successives et en remplissant d'abord les NTC avec un précurseur puis d'utiliser la cavité interne des NTC comme des nanoréacteurs afin de procéder dans un second temps à une transformation in situ. Dans ces travaux, nous avons étudié (1) le remplissage de DWCNT avec de l'iode ainsi qu'avec différents iodures métalliques en mettant en œuvre essentiellement la méthode des sels fondus. Nous avons étudié en détails l'influence des paramètres physico-chimiques du matériau de remplissage (réactivité chimique sous la forme en particulier du potentiel rédox du couple iodure métallique / métal, mais aussi viscosité, tension de surface, pression de vapeur saturante en milieu fondu) mais aussi du NTC (texture cylindrique ou "en arrêtes de poisson", diamètre, nombre de parois) sur le taux de remplissage. (2) Nous avons étudié en détail un certain nombre de structures inhabituelles de nanomatériaux confinés dans les DWCNT, en faisant appel à la modélisation structurale et à la simulation d'images de microscopie électronique sur la base de ces modèles pour guider notre analyse. (3) Nous avons enfin étudié différentes réactions in situ dans les DWCNT telles que la sulfuration, la réduction sous hydrogène ou encore la fluoration afin de synthétiser des nanocristaux originaux et de les caractériser en détails à l'aide d'outils tels que par exemple le MET Haute Résolution et la spectroscopie de perte d'énergie des électrons (EELS).

Hybrid nanostructures consisting of Si polycrystalline nanocones, with an anemone-like termination coated with C-nanotubes bundles, have been generated on a (1 0 0) Si substrate in a dual mode microwave/radio-frequency plasma reactor. The substrate is both heated and bombarded by energetic H ions during the synthesis process. The nanocones growth is explained considering pull of the growing Si nanocrystalline phase along the lines of the electrical field, likely via a molten/recrystallization mechanism. The one-step building of the achieved complex 3D architectures is described in terms of dynamic competition between Si and C nanotubes growth under the peculiar conditions of kinetically driven processes.

In this article, direct coating of ZnO on PECVD-grown multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is achieved using atomic layer deposition (ALD). Transmission electron microscopy investigation shows that the deposited ZnO shell is continuous and uniform, in contrast to the previously reported particle morphology. The ZnO layer has a good crystalline quality as indicated by Raman and photoluminescence (PL) measurements. We also show that such ZnO layer can be used as seed layer for subsequent hydrothermal growth of ZnO nanorods, resulting in branched CNT–inorganic hybrid nanostructures. Potentially, this method can also apply to the fabrication of ZnO-based hybrid nanostructures on other carbon nanomaterials.

A layer-by-layer technique has been developed to synthesize FeOOH–Au hybrid nanorods that can be transformed into Fe2O3–Au and Fe3O4–Au hybrid nanorods via controllable annealing process. The homogenous deposition of Au nanoparticles onto the surface of FeOOH nanorods can be attributed to the strong electrostatic attraction between metal ions and polyelectrolyte-modified FeOOH nanorods. The annealing atmosphere controls the phase transformation from FeOOH–Au to Fe3O4–Au and α-Fe2O3–Au. Moreover, the magnetic and optical properties of as-synthesized Fe2O3–Au and Fe3O4–Au hybrid nanorods have been investigated.

Car−Parrinello structural optimizations of realistic models of the Maya Blue (MB) hybrid material are combined with TDDFT calculations of the electronic excitation spectra to identify the nature of the fundamental guest−host interactions leading to the unusual stability of this pigment. The comparison with the features of the experimental visible spectrum reveals that the main mode of interaction between the host solid (the palygorskite clay) and the guest molecule (the organic indigo dye) involves the coordination of the carbonyl group of the dye by Al3+ ions exposed at the edge of the palygorskite tunnels. Analogous Mg2+−dye interactions which do not strongly affect the MB visible spectrum can also be present. Thermal treatment used in the preparation of the pigment appears therefore essential to release some of the structural water molecules tightly bound to the Al3+ ions in the internal clay surface, thus leaving them available to coordinate the organic molecule. We report on the effect of fullerenes (C-60) on the stability of nanostructured lipid emulsions. These (oil-in-water) emulsions are essentially aqueous dispersions of lipid particles exhibiting self-assembled nanostructures at their cores. The majority of previous studies on fullerenes were focused on planar and spherical lipid bilayer systems including pure lipids and liposomes. In this work, fullerenes were interacted with a lipid that forms nanostructured dispersions of non-lamellar self-assemblies. A range of parameters including the composition of emulsions and sonication parameters were examined to determine the influence of fullerenes on in-situ and pre-stabilized lipid emulsions. We found that fullerenes mutually stabilize very low concentrations of lipid molecules, while other concentration emulsions struggle to stay stable or even to form at first instance; we provide hypotheses to support these observations. Interestingly though, we were able to encapsulate varying amounts of fullerenes in sterically stabilized emulsions. This step has a significant positive impact, as we could effectively control an inherent aggregation tendency of fullerenes in aqueous environments. These novel hybrid nanomaterials may open a range of avenues for biotechnological and biomedical applications exploiting properties of both lipid and fullerene nanostructures. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. This thesis deals with new hybrid nanomaterials of functional nanocable-like structures, consisting of covalent polymers and self-assembled molecules. The «bottom-up» approach adopted for the elaboration is based only on physical processes such as heterogeneous nucleation, crystallization and thermoreversible gelation. This original approach allowed us to easily prepare two functional nanocables: the first consisted of bicopper tetra-2-ethylhexanoate (CuS8) molecules self-assembled on filaments which are encapsulated within isotactic polystyrene (iPS) fibrils. We proved throughout different studies (DSC, SANS, SQUID, EXAFS and FT-IR) that the encapsulation allows one to get stable filaments, and particularly to modify their antiferromagnetic behavior as well. The second system constituted of poly(alkylthiophene)s fibrilles (P3AT), sheathed by diamides molecules (BHPB-10) self-assembled on nanotubes. Besides the morphological and the structuration studies (TEM and UV-Vis), we investigated the conductivity of the hybrid system P3BT/BHPB-10 by C-AFM. Results showed the possibility to obtain sheathed semi-conducting nano-cables.; Ce travail de thèse a porté sur l’élaboration de nanomatériaux hybrides de type nano-câbles fonctionnels, composés de polymères covalents et de molécules auto-assemblées. L’approche «bottom-up» adoptée repose sur des processus uniquement physiques, à savoir la nucléation hétérogène, la cristallisation et la gélification thermo réversible. Deux systèmes hybrides ont été élaborés et étudiés: le premier est composé de molécules de tetra-2-éthylhexanoate de bicuivre (CuS8) auto-assemblées en filaments, lesquels sont encapsulés au sein des fibrilles de polystyrène isotactique (iPS). Nous avons montré au travers de différentes études (DSC, DNPA,SQUID, EXAFS et IR-TF) que leur encapsulation permet non seulement de les stabiliser mais également de modifier leur comportement antiferromagnétique. Le deuxième système a consisté à des fibrilles de poly(alkylthiophène)s (P3AT), emmaillotées au moyen de molécules diamides (BHPB-10) capables de s'assembler en nanotubes. En plus des études de la morphologie et de la structuration par TEM et UV-Vis,nous avons étudié les propriétés de conductivité du système hybride P3BT/BHPB-10 en C-AFM. Nous avons montré qu’il est effectivement possible de réaliser des nano-câbles semi-conducteur gainés.

The MNPs were prepared using microwave-assisted synthesis in the presence of polymerized ionic liquids (PILs), which were used as a linker to couple the MNP and PEDOT. The resulting PEDOT–PIL-modified Fe3O4 hybrids were then explored as a sensing channel material for a chemiresistive sensor to detect VOC vapors. The PEDOT–PIL-modified Fe3O4 sensor exhibited a tunable response, with high sensitivity (down to a concentration of 1 ppm) and low noise level, to VOCs; these VOCs include acetone vapor, which is present in the exhaled breath of potential lung cancer patients. The present sensor, based on the hybrid nanostructured sensing materials, exhibited a 38.8% higher sensitivity and an 11% lower noise level than its PEDOT–PIL-only counterpart. This approach of embedding MNPs in conducting polymers could lead to the development of new electronic noses, which have significant potential for the use in the early diagnosis of lung cancer via the detection of VOC biomarkers.
