254. The heterogenicity features revealed based on the regional and sectoral carbon metabolic system: An empirical analysis of heavy-polluted cases in China.

Abstract

The Chinese government has made a positive response and policies to address global climate change, regions and sectors has become more important in reducing carbon emission. This study used the indicator of carbon emission intensity to evaluate the reduction effect of carbon emission of heavy-polluted regions and sectors, and also their features in China. The results indicated firstly, the aggregated carbon emission intensity of regions was primarily influenced by their embodied added value. From 2012 to 2015, the regions' embodied added value increased more than 2 times. Secondly, the embodied carbon emission of the manufacture of chemical products sectors in regions were dominated by emission implied in metabolic path length greater than five, which took the proportion of more than 30% of emission. This showed that emission reduction policies for heavy-polluted sectors should focus on controlling the emission implied in trading with downstream sectors, and also demonstrated that the heavy-polluted sectors drove the reduction of carbon emission of other sectors. Thirdly, the carbon emission of heavy-polluted sectors in coastal regions fell due to implementing the carbon emission trading scheme policy, while heavy-polluted sectors in the inland regions radiated to their upstream and downstream sectors. Abstract

Neuroinflammation is involved in the physiological and pathological processes of numerous neurological diseases, and its inhibition seems to be a promising therapeutic direction for these diseases. Ruxolitinib is a classical Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that is oral, highly potent and bioavailable, which has recently gained approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of inflammatory disorders. The potential inhibitory effect of ruxolitinib on neuroinflammation has not been fully studied. In the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced neuroinflammatory cell model, we observed that ruxolitinib reduced the levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) expression, and neuroinflammation by inhibiting the Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinase/Nuclear factor-κ B (MAPK/NF-κB) signaling pathway. Similarly, mice injected intracerebroventricular with ruxolitinib exhibited significantly reduced LPS-stimulated activation of microglia and astrocytes, and expression of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6. These results demonstrate that ruxolitinib attenuates the neuroinflammatory responses both in vivo and in vitro , at least in part by inhibiting MAPK/NF-κB signaling pathway. Abstract

Regional economic development in China has resulted in an unbalanced distribution of resources and frequent exchanges of resources and products among regions. Therefore, it is necessary to understand these regional differences to support national planning to improve sustainability. In this research, we used energy data and a multiregional input-output table for China in 2002 to analyze the domestic trade among the 30 provinces and seven regions of China. We also quantified the embodied energy flows and their patterns by means of ecological network analysis and looked at different types of relationships between the regions, such as mutualistic or competing relationships. The results show that the flows connected with the Northern and Eastern regions ranked first, and those connected with the Southwestern and Northwestern regions were the smallest. Based on the flows among provinces and regions, we determined the relationships among them. Results show that more than 95% of the total relationships among the regions were exploitation, with only one competition relationship. The Eastern region received the largest input and the highest benefits from their energy exchanges with other regions. Our study of the regional flows and relationships among the regions and provinces provides useful information on the flows and consumption of embodied energy in China, thereby providing insights into the sustainability of these flows and how to promote sustainable development through regional cooperation.

Abstract

Interleukin (IL)-8 has been implicated in a wide range of diseases. The polymorphism of IL-8 gene, which may affect the production level of the cytokine, may be associated with cancer cachexia. To test this hypothesis, we investigated the potential influence of the polymorphisms of the IL-8 gene, -251 A/T and +781 C/T, on susceptibility to cachexia from patients with gastric cancer in a Chinese population, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). A significantly increased frequency of +781 T allele was noted in patients with cachexia (OR = 1.765, 95% CI: 1.192-2.615, P = 0.004). The +781 TT genotypes were observed to be associated with a significantly increased risk of cachexia (OR = 2.156, 95% CI: 1.056-4.400, P = 0.033), and the difference was enhanced beyond the level of statistical significance when logistic regression was applied (OR = 3.500, 95% CI: 1.406-8.710, P = 0.007). Haplotype analysis revealed that A(251)T(781) haplotype (defined by SNPs at positions -251 and +781) was associated with a significantly increased risk of cachexia as compared with the T(251)C(781) haplotype (OR = 1.69; 95% CI: 1.08-2.62; P = 0.022). These results suggest that the genetic polymorphisms of proinflammatory cytokine IL-8 may contribute to the pathogenesis of cachexia in gastric cancer patients.

Abstract

We report the in vitro cell test and in vivo animal test results of titanium oxide nanotubes (TiO2 NTs) as a potential therapeutic agent used for cancer thermotherapy in combination with near-infrared (NIR) laser. The in vitro cell test results show that both the cells exposed to NIR laser without TiO2 NTs treatment and the cells treated with TiO2 NTs but not with NIR irradiation had cell viabilities higher than 96%. Combination of these two techniques, however, shows cell viability less than 1%. The cell death rate strongly depended on the concentration of TiO2 NTs. Also, the cell deaths were mostly due to necrosis but partly due to late apoptosis. The in vivo animal test results show that tumor cells can be completely destroyed without nearly giving damage to surrounding healthy cells by an injection of an adequate amount of TiO2 NTs/NaCl suspension and a subsequent single continuous laser treatment at a moderately low laser illumina-tion intensity for the exposure time optimized for the tumor size. These results suggest that TiO2 NTs can be effectively utilized as a therapeutic agent for cancer thermotherapy due to their excellent photothermal property and high bio-compatibility.

Abstract

A practical design of reduction mutual coupling is presented between patch antenna elements by using symmetrical microstrip structures in the paper. The patch antenna design consists of the following: two antenna patches, a rectangular substrate plane, a pair of three orders symmetrical microstrips, and a common ground. By using the proposed scheme, approximately 35 dB mutual coupling reduction is achieved at central frequency of 7.3 GHz while maintaining gain of 2.3 dB and directivity of 5.53dBi. Return loss slightly decreases by 2.91 dB from −23.12 to −20.21 dB. In contrast, it exerts no effects on gain radiation characteristics in a no microstrip setup. Abstract

Improving the silicon layer's optical absorption is a key research point for crystalline silicon based thin film solar cells. Light trapping is a method widely adopted to achieve this research purpose. In this paper, we propose low loss interface photonic crystals layer (IPC), which is sandwiched between the crystalline silicon layer and the cover layer. The low loss interface photonic crystals layer could boost the light trapping efficiency significantly. The mechanism is that the smaller refraction index difference between silicon layer and the low loss interface photonic crystals layer could reduce the light's interface reflection. Taking advantage of the coupling calculation by optical and electrical simulations, solar cell's absorption efficiency and electrical performance parameters are obtained. Compared with optimized reference group, the maximum output power of the proposed solar cell could be improved by 6.44%. The result indicates that the proposed low loss interface photonic crystals layer is applicable for light's trapping in crystalline silicon thin film solar cells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NGTS was administered for 24 weeks to achieve target BP of 140/90 mmHg. The dose could be uptitrated to 60 mg/d in case of unsatisfactory BP reduction after 4-week treatment. Home blood pressure measurement was recorded through the initial 1–14 days, and office BP and heart rate were evaluated at 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 weeks.Results: One hundred and seventeen patients (84.8%) completed the study, and their average BP decreased by 19.0/11.3 mmHg after 24 weeks. The reduction of either systolic or diastolic BP was positively correlated with baseline BP at weeks 2, 4, or 24 after treatment (r=0.603–0.762, all p<0.05). The maximal BP reduction was observed in 83% of patients at 4 weeks of treatment even though the dose of nifedipine remained unchanged (30 mg/day).Conclusion: These findings show that BP reduction is greatly influenced by the baseline level. Patients with high baseline BP had maximum reduction after treatment with NGTS, and the maximal antihypertensive efficacy of NGTS could appear even at 4 weeks after treatment initiation. Our own studies have previously confirmed the advantages of quantum dot-based nanotechnology for quantitative analysis of biomarkers relative to conventional immunohistochemistry (IHC). This study was designed to 1) assess the expression of TOP2A, 2) investigate the relationship between TOP2A expression and major clinical pathological parameters, and 3) evaluate the prognostic value of TOP2A by quantum dot-based immunofluorescent imaging and quantitative analytical system (QD-IIQAS) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).Patients and methods: TOP2A expression in 145 TNBC specimens was detected using IHC and QD-IIQAS, and a comparative analysis of the two methods was conducted, including an exploration of the relationship between TOP2A expression and major clinical pathological parameters in TNBC. The authors aimed to study the early intervention impact on arterial stiffness and pulse wave velocity (PWV) independent of its blood-pressure-(BP) lowering effect in mild hypertensive patients.Methods: This single-center, single-arm, open-label, prospective, Phase IV study recruited patients with mild hypertension and increased PWV from December 2013 to December 2014 (N=138; age, 18–75 years; systolic blood pressure, 140–160 mmHg; diastolic BP, 90–100 mmHg; increased brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity [baPWV, ≥12 m/s]). Nifedipine GITS (30 mg/d) was administered for 24 weeks to achieve target BP of <140/90 mmHg. The dose was uptitrated at 60 mg/d in case of unsatisfactory BP reduction after 4 weeks. Primary study end point was the change in baPWV after nifedipine GITS treatment. Hemodynamic parameters (office BP, 24-hour ambulatory BP monitoring, and heart rate and adverse events) were evaluated at baseline and followed-up at 2, 4, 8, 12, 18, and 24 weeks.Results: Majority of patients (n=117; 84.8%) completed the study. baPWV decreased significantly at 4 weeks compared with baseline (1,598.87±239.82 vs 1,500.89±241.15 cm/s, P<0.001), was stable at 12 weeks (1,482.24±215.14 cm/s, P<0.001), and remained steady through 24 weeks (1,472.58±205.01 cm/s, P<0.001).
