We apply XCLUMPY, an X-ray spectral model from a clumpy torus in an active galactic nucleus (AGN), to the broadband X-ray spectra of 10 obscured AGNs observed with both Suzaku and NuSTAR. The infrared spectra of these AGNs were analyzed with the CLUMPY code. Since XCLUMPY adopts the same clump distribution as that in the CLUMPY, we can directly compare the torus parameters obtained from the X-ray spectra and those from the infrared ones. The torus angular widths determined from the infrared spectra ($\sigma_{\mathrm{IR}}$) are systematically larger than those from the X-ray data ($\sigma_{\mathrm{X}}$); the difference ($\sigma_{\mathrm{IR}}-\sigma_{\mathrm{X}}$) correlates with the inclination angle determined from the X-ray spectrum. These results can be explained by the contribution from dusty polar outflows to the observed infrared flux, which becomes more significant at higher inclinations (more edge-on views). The ratio of the hydrogen column density and V-band extinction in the line of sight absorber shows large scatter ($\simeq$1 dex) around the Galactic value, suggesting that a significant fraction of AGNs have dust-rich circumnuclear environments., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

This study aimed to obtain details regarding treatment planning techniques for lung stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) employed at each institution in Japan by using a questionnaire survey. An Internet questionnaire survey on SBRT procedures performed in 2016 was conducted by the QA/QC committee of the Japan Society of Medical Physics from April to June 2017. The questionnaire assessed two aspects: the environment for SBRT at each institution and the treatment planning techniques with and without respiratory motion management techniques (RMMT). Of the 309 evaluated responses, 218 institutions had performed SBRT. A total of 186 institutions performed SBRT without RMMT and 139 institutions performed SBRT with RMMT. When respiratory motion was ≥10 mm, 69 institutions applied RMMT. The leading RMMT were breath holding (77 institutions), respiratory gating (49 institutions) and real-time tumor tracking (11 institutions). The most frequently used irradiation technique was 3D conformal radiotherapy, which was used in 145 institutions without RMMT and 119 institutions with RMMT. Computed tomography (CT) images acquired under free breathing were mostly used for dose calculation for patients treated without RMMT. We present far-infrared (FIR) properties of an extremely luminous infrared galaxy (ELIRG) at $z_{\rm spec}$ = 3.703, WISE J101326.25+611220.1 (WISE1013+6112). This ELIRG is selected as an IR-bright dust-obscured galaxy (DOG) based on the photometry from the Sloan digital sky survey (SDSS) and wide-field infrared survey explorer (WISE). In order to derive its accurate IR luminosity, we perform follow-up observations at 89 and 154 $\mu$m using the high-resolution airborne wideband camera-plus (HAWC+) on board the 2.7-m stratospheric observatory for infrared astronomy (SOFIA) telescope. We conduct spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting with CIGALE using 15 photometric data (0.4-1300 $\mu$m). We successfully pin down FIR SED of WISE1013+6112 and its IR luminosity is estimated to be $L_{\rm IR}$ = (1.62 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times 10^{14}$ $L_{\odot}$, making it one of the most luminous IR galaxies in the universe. We determine the dust temperature of WISE1013+6112 is $T_{\rm dust}$ = 89 $\pm$ 3 K, which is significantly higher than that of other populations such as SMGs and FIR-selected galaxies at similar IR luminosities. The resultant dust mass is $M_{\rm dust}$ = (2.2 $\pm$ 0.1) $\times 10^{8}$ $M_{\odot}$. We report detections of two 1.2 mm continuum sources (S 1.2 mm ∼ 0.6 mJy) without any counterparts in the deep H- and/or K-band image (i.e., K-band magnitude ≳26 mag). These near-infrared-dark faint millimeter sources are uncovered by ASAGAO, a deep and wide-field (≃26 arcmin2) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) 1.2 mm survey. One has a red IRAC (3.6 and 4.5 μm) counterpart, and the other has been independently detected at 850 and 870 μm using SCUBA2 and ALMA Band 7, respectively. Their optical-to-radio spectral energy distributions indicate that they can lie at z ≳ 3–5 and can be in the early phase of massive galaxy formation. Their contribution to the cosmic star formation rate density is estimated to be ∼1 × 10‑3 M ⊙ yr‑1 Mpc‑3 if they lie somewhere in the redshift range of z ∼ 3–5. This value can be consistent with, or greater than, that of bright submillimeter galaxies (S 870 μm > 4.2 mJy) at z ∼ 3–5. We also uncover three more candidate near-infrared-dark faint ALMA sources without any counterparts (S 1.2 mm ∼ 0.45–0.86 mJy). These results show that an unbiased ALMA survey can reveal the dust-obscured star formation activities, which were missed in previous deep optical/near-infrared surveys.

We report results from X-ray and optical observations of the Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1828-249, performed with Suzaku and the Kanata telescope around the X-ray flux peak in the 2013 outburst. The time-averaged X-ray spectrum covering 0.6--168 keV was approximately characterized by a strong multi-color disk blackbody component with an inner disk temperature of ~0.6 keV, and a power-law tail with a photon index of ~2.0. We detected an additional structure at 5-10 keV, which can be modelled neither with X-ray reflection on the disk, nor relativistic broadening of the disk emission. Instead, it was successfully reproduced with a Comptonization of disk photons by thermal electrons with a relatively low temperature (, Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures and 3 tables, Accepted for publication in PASJ

We propose new diagnostics that utilize the [O IV] 25.89 $\mu$m and nuclear (subarcsecond scale) 12 $\mu$m luminosity ratio for identifying whether an AGN is deeply `buried' in their surrounding material. Utilizing a sample of 16 absorbed AGNs at redshifts lower than 0.03 in the Swift/BAT catalog observed with Suzaku, we find that AGNs with small scattering fractions ($, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, (accepted in the Astrophysical Journal, ApJ)

We performed simultaneous observations with Suzaku and NuSTAR of the Galactic black hole binary 4U 1630−47 in the high/soft state (HSS) during the 2015 outburst. To compare our results with those observed in the HSS at lower luminosities, we re-analyze the Suzaku data taken during the 2006 outburst. The continuum can be well explained by thermal disk emission and a hard power-law tail. All spectra show strong iron-K absorption line features, suggesting that a disk wind is always developed in the HSS. We find that the degree of ionization of the wind dramatically increased at the brightest epoch in 2015, when the continuum became harder. Detailed XSTAR simulations show that this cannot be explained solely by an increase of the photoionization flux. Instead, we show that the observed behavior in the HSS is consistent with a theory of thermally-driven disk winds, where the column density and the ionization parameter of the disk wind are proportional to the luminosity and the Compton temperature, respectively.

The bulk of the X-ray emission in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) is produced very close to the accreting supermassive black hole (SMBH), in a corona of hot electrons which up scatters optical and ultraviolet photons from the accretion flow. The cutoff energy ($E_{\rm C}$) of the primary X-ray continuum emission carries important information on the physical characteristics of the X-ray emitting plasma, but little is currently known about its potential relation with the properties of accreting SMBHs. Using the largest broad-band (0.3-150 keV) X-ray spectroscopic study available to date, we investigate how the corona is related to the AGN luminosity, black hole mass and Eddington ratio ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$). Assuming a slab corona the median values of the temperature and optical depth of the Comptonizing plasma are $kT_{\rm e}=105 \pm 18$ keV and $\tau=0.25\pm0.06$, respectively. When we properly account for the large number of $E_{\rm C}$ lower limits, we find a statistically significant dependence of the cutoff energy on the Eddington ratio. In particular, objects with $ \lambda_{\rm Edd}>0.1$ have a significantly lower median cutoff energy ($E_{\rm C}=160\pm41$ keV) than those with $\lambda_{\rm Edd}\leq 0.1$ ($E_{\rm C}=370\pm51$ keV). This is consistent with the idea that radiatively compact coronae are also cooler, because they tend to avoid the region in the temperature-compactness parameter space where runaway pair production would dominate. We show that this behaviour could also straightforwardly explain the suggested positive correlation between the photon index ($\Gamma$) and the Eddington ratio, being able to reproduce the observed slope of the $\Gamma-\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ trend., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the detection and subsequent X-ray monitoring of the new Galactic black hole candidate MAXI J1535-571 with the MAXI/GSC. Afterthe discovery on 2017 September 2 made independently with MAXI and the Swift/BAT, the source brightened gradually, and in a few weeks, reached the peak intensity of ~5 Crab, or ~1.6 x 10^{-7} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in terms of the 2--20 keV flux. On the initial outburst rise, the X-ray spectrum was described by a power-law model with a photon index of ~2, while after a hard-to-soft transition which occurred on September 18, the spectrum required a disk blackbody component in addition. At around the flux peak, the 2-8 keV and 15-50 keV light curves showed quasi-periodic and anti-correlated fluctuations with an amplitude of 10--20%, on a time scale of ~1-day. We present the survey design, data reduction, construction of images, and source catalog of the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) twenty-six arcmin^2 survey of GOODS-S at one-millimeter (ASAGAO). ASAGAO is a deep (1sigma ~ 61 uJy/beam for a 250 klambda-tapered map with a synthesized beam size of 0.51" x 0.45") and wide area (26 arcmin^2) survey on a contiguous field at 1.2 mm. By combining with ALMA archival data in the GOODS-South field, we obtained a deeper map in the same region (1sigma ~ 30 uJy/beam for a deep region with a 250 klambda-taper, and a synthesized beam size of 0.59" x 0.53"), providing the largest sample of sources (25 sources at >=5.0sigma, 45 sources at >=4.5sigma) among ALMA blank-field surveys to date. The number counts shows that 52(+11 -8)% of the extragalactic background light at 1.2 mm is resolved into discrete sources at S1.2m > 135 uJy. We create infrared (IR) luminosity functions (LFs) in the redshift range of z = 1-3 from the ASAGAO sources with KS-band counterparts, and constrain the faintest luminosity of the LF at 2.0 < z < 3.0. The LFs are consistent with previous results based on other ALMA and SCUBA-2 observations, which suggest a positive luminosity evolution and negative density evolution with increasing redshift. We find that obscured star-formation of sources with IR luminosities of log(L(IR)/Lsun)} ~> 11.8 account for ~~60%-90% of the z ~ 2 cosmic star-formation rate density., 19 pages, 18 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

OBJECTIVE: To develop a mathematical model for cardiac dose estimation for patients who have been treated for left-sided breast cancer without CT data. METHODS: After obtaining institutional review board approvals, 147 patients with left-sided breast cancer were selected that were treated supine with opposed tangents. The heart blocks from the tangential fields were removed and dose calculations were performed with 6 MV beams using an advanced algorithm. This study was performed with CT data with DRR to represent a radiographic simulator image of yesteryear treatments. The beam’s eye-view images showing delineated breast, lung and heart were created to represent views on radiograph. The maximum heart distance (MHD) was recorded and irradiated heart area (AREA) was computed by combination of triangles and rectangles. Based on accurate 3D dose calculation, mean dose (D(mean)) and V(10) to V(50) of heart were analyzed with respect to MHD and AREA for dosimetric parameters using linear and quadratic fit. RESULTS: The treatment parameters calculated by MHD and segments using 2D radiographs were within 2% of the actual dosimetric parameters computed from the 3D planning system. The MHD and AREA vs D(mean), V(10), V(20), V(30) and V(50) showed very good correlation with linear model (R(2) > 0.91); however the correlation was significantly better with quadratic model (R(2) > 0.92). The ASTRO-H mission was designed and developed through an international collaboration of JAXA, NASA, ESA, and the CSA. It was successfully launched on February 17, 2016, and then named Hitomi. During the in-orbit verification phase, the on-board observational instruments functioned as expected. The intricate coolant and refrigeration systems for soft X-ray spectrometer (SXS, a quantum micro-calorimeter) and soft X-ray imager (SXI, an X-ray CCD) also functioned as expected. However, on March 26, 2016, operations were prematurely terminated by a series of abnormal events and mishaps triggered by the attitude control system. These errors led to a fatal event: the loss of the solar panels on the Hitomi mission. The X-ray Astronomy Recovery Mission (or, XARM) is proposed to regain the key scientific advances anticipated by the international collaboration behind Hitomi. XARM will recover this science in the shortest time possible by focusing on one of the main science goals of Hitomi,“Resolving astrophysical problems by precise high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy”.1 This decision was reached after evaluating the performance of the instruments aboard Hitomi and the mission’s initial scientific results, and considering the landscape of planned international X-ray astrophysics missions in 2020’s and 2030’s. Hitomi opened the door to high-resolution spectroscopy in the X-ray universe. It revealed a number of discrepancies between new observational results and prior theoretical predictions. Yet, the resolution pioneered by Hitomi is also the key to answering these and other fundamental questions. The high spectral resolution realized by XARM will not offer mere refinements; rather, it will enable qualitative leaps in astrophysics and plasma physics. XARM has therefore been given a broad scientific charge: “Revealing material circulation and energy transfer in cosmic plasmas and elucidating evolution of cosmic structures and objects”. To fulfill this charge, four categories of science objectives that were defined for Hitomi will also be pursued by XARM; these include (1) Structure formation of the Universe and evolution of clusters of galaxies; (2) Circulation history of baryonic matters in the Universe; (3) Transport and circulation of energy in the Universe; (4) New science with unprecedented high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. In order to achieve these scientific objectives, XARM will carry a 6 × 6 pixelized X-ray micro-calorimeter on the focal plane of an X-ray mirror assembly, and an aligned X-ray CCD camera covering the same energy band and a wider field of view. This paper introduces the science objectives, mission concept, and observing plan of XARM.

FORCE is a 1.2 tonnes small mission dedicated for wide-band fine-imaging x-ray observation. It covers from 1 to 80 keV with a good angular resolution of $15"$ half-power-diameter. It is proposed to be launched around mid-2020s and designed to reach a limiting sensitivity as good as $F_X (10-40~{\rm keV}) = 3 \times 10^{-15}$~erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ keV$^{-1}$ within 1~Ms. This number is one order of magnitude better than current best one. With its high-sensitivity wide-band coverage, FORCE will probe the new science field of "missing BHs", searching for families of black holes of which populations and evolutions are not well known. Other point-source and diffuse-source sciences are also considered. PURPOSE A contrast-enhancing agent is imperative for the accurate target delineation of pancreatic tumors. This study demonstrates the potential use of treatment planning for patients with pancreatic tumors based on the water density image (WDI) generated by dual-energy computed tomography (DECT). METHODS Tissue characterization and multi-energy phantom scanning were performed through DECT and the physical characteristics of the WDI and a virtual monochromatic image (VMI) were assessed. The measured and the corresponding theoretical electron density relative to water (RED) and mass density (MD) were compared. Treatment plans based on the WDI (TPWDI ) and VMI (TPVMI ) were compared for 22 pancreatic cancer patients who underwent contrast-enhanced DECT scan. RESULTS The total absolute difference in the HU value between the conventional 120 kVp images and the VMI was the smallest at the energy level of 77 keV (3.3 HU), and the VMI at 77 keV was used for subsequent analysis. The difference between the measured and theoretical values of RED and MD for iodine using the VMI (>15%) was larger than that using WDI (

We report on multi-color optical photometry in the 2015 outbursts of V404 Cygni, an X-ray transient. This system showed optical oscillations on timescales of 100 sec to 2.5 hours in these outbursts, and they were correlated with the simultaneous X-ray variations. On the basis of the $\sim$1-min optical delays against X-rays and multi-wavelength SED analyses, the optical variability in this system was likely caused by X-ray reprocessing at the outer accretion disk. We also find that some repetitive optical oscillations can occur at mass accretion rates $>$10 times lower than previously thought. Although the mechanism of this kind of variations is still unclear, we suggest that the lack of sustained mass accretion, which would be induced in long-period systems, may be a key condition.

OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to assess the accuracy of the quantitative measurements obtained using dual-energy computed tomography with metal artifact reduction software (MARS). METHODS Dual-energy computed tomography scans (fast kV-switching) are performed on a phantom, by varying the number of metal rods (Ti and Pb) and reference iodine materials. Objective and subjective image analyses are performed on retroreconstructed virtual monochromatic images (VMIs) (VMI at 70 keV). RESULTS The maximum artifact indices for VMI-Ti and VMI-Pb (5 metal rods) with MARS (without MARS) were 17.4 (166.7) and 34.6 (810.6), respectively; MARS significantly improved the mean subjective 5-point score (P < 0.05). The maximum differences between the measured Hounsfield unit and theoretical values for 5 mg/mL iodine and 2-mm core rods were -42.2% and -68.5%, for VMI-Ti and VMI-Pb (5 metal rods), respectively, and the corresponding differences in the iodine concentration were -64.7% and -73.0%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Metal artifact reduction software improved the objective and subjective image quality; however, the quantitative values were underestimated.

We report on the optical properties of infrared (IR)-bright dust-obscured galaxies (DOGs) that are defined as (i-[22])_AB > 7.0. Because supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in IR-bright DOGs are expected to be rapidly growing in the major merger scenario, they provide useful clues for understanding the co-evolution of SMBHs and their host galaxies. However, the optical properties of IR-bright DOGs remain unclear because the optical emission of a DOG is very faint. By combining ~ 105 deg^2 images of the optical, near-IR, and mid-IR data obtained from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) survey, the VISTA VIKING survey, and the WISE all-sky survey, respectively, 571 IR-bright DOGs were selected. We found that IR-bright DOGs show a redder (g-z)_AB color than other populations of dusty galaxies, such as ultra-luminous IR galaxies (ULIRGs) at a similar redshift, with a significantly large dispersion. Among the selected DOGs, star-formation (SF) dominated DOGs show a relatively red color, while active galactic nucleus (AGN) dominated DOGs show a rather blue color in optical. This result is consistent with the idea that the relative AGN contribution in the optical emission becomes more significant at a later stage in the major merger scenario. We discovered eight IR-bright DOGs showing a significant blue excess in blue HSC bands (BluDOGs). This blue excess can be interpreted as a leaked AGN emission that is either a directly leaking or a scattered AGN emission, as proposed for some blue-excess Hot DOGs in earlier studies., 24 pages, 24 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the hard X-ray (3-50 keV) view of the compact group HCG 16 (Arp 318) observed with Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). NGC 838 and NGC 839 are undetected at energies above 8 keV, showing no evidence of heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This confirms that these are starburst-dominant galaxies as previously suggested. We perform a comprehensive broadband (0.3-50 keV) X-ray spectral analysis of the interacting galaxies NGC 833 and NGC 835, using data of NuSTAR, Chandra, and XMM-Newton observed on multiple epochs from 2000 to 2015. NuSTAR detects the transmitted continua of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGNs) in NGC 833 and NGC 835 with line-of-sight column densities of $\approx 3 \times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$ and intrinsic 2-10 keV luminosities of $\approx 3\times10^{41}$ erg s$^{-1}$. The iron-K$\alpha$ to hard X-ray luminosity ratios of NGC 833 and NGC 835 suggest that their tori are moderately developed, which may have been triggered by the galaxy interactions. We find that NGC 835 underwent long-term variability in both intrinsic luminosity (by a factor of 5) and absorption (by $\Delta N_{\rm H} \approx 2\times10^{23}$ cm$^{-2}$). We discuss the relation between the X-ray and total infrared luminosities in local LLAGNs hosted by spiral galaxies. The large diversity in their ratios is consistent with the the general idea that the mass accretion process in the nucleus and the star forming activity in the disk are not strongly coupled, regardless of the galaxy environment., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

arXiv:1607.06195v1.-- et al., How black holes accrete surrounding matter is a fundamental yet unsolved question in astrophysics. It is generally believed that matter is absorbed into black holes via accretion disks, the state of which depends primarily on the mass-accretion rate. When this rate approaches the critical rate (the Eddington limit), thermal instability is supposed to occur in the inner disk, causing repetitive patterns of large-amplitude X-ray variability (oscillations) on timescales of minutes to hours. In fact, such oscillations have been observed only in sources with a high mass-accretion rate, such as GRS 1915+105 (refs 2, 3). These large-amplitude, relatively slow timescale, phenomena are thought to have physical origins distinct from those of X-ray or optical variations with small amplitudes and fast timescales (less than about 10 seconds) often observed in other black-hole binaries - for example, XTE J1118+480 (ref. 4) and GX 339â '4 (ref. 5). Here we report an extensive multi-colour optical photometric data set of V404 Cygni, an X-ray transient source containing a black hole of nine solar masses (and a companion star) at a distance of 2.4 kiloparsecs (ref. 8). Our data show that optical oscillations on timescales of 100 seconds to 2.5 hours can occur at mass-accretion rates more than ten times lower than previously thought. This suggests that the accretion rate is not the critical parameter for inducing inner-disk instabilities. Instead, we propose that a long orbital period is a key condition for these large-amplitude oscillations, because the outer part of the large disk in binaries with long orbital periods will have surface densities too low to maintain sustained mass accretion to the inner part of the disk. In this paper, we introduce a notion of the mathematical entropy for hyperbolic systems of balance laws with (not necessarily symmetric) relaxation. As applications, we deal with the Timoshenko system, the Euler–Maxwell system and the Euler–Cattaneo–Maxwell system. Especially, for the Euler–Cattaneo–Maxwell system, we observe that its dissipative structure is of the regularity-loss type and investigate the corresponding decay property. Furthermore, we prove the global existence and asymptotic stability of solutions to the Euler–Cattaneo–Maxwell system for small initial data.

The organocatalytic site-selective monoacylation of avermectin B2a, an insecticidal and anti-parasitic drug, was accomplished. Although an acetylation of avermectin B2a using a 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as a catalyst gave poor site-selectivity, use of our organocatalyst increased site-selectivity of the acylation at the C-5-OH as well as the yield of monoacetate. This catalyst was also effective in other acylations. Interestingly, trihaloacetylation under same conditions gave poor site-selectivity. However, the use of an enantiomer of our organocatalyst provided the C-4″-O-trihaloacetyl avermectin B2a with excellent site-selectivity. These results indicate that the site-selective acylation of avermectin B2a can be controlled by the combination of a suitable organocatalyst and an acid anhydride.

There are 2 methods commonly used for patient positioning in the anterior-posterior (A-P) direction: one is the skin mark patient setup method (SMPS) and the other is the couch height-based patient setup method (CHPS). This study compared the setup accuracy of these 2 methods for abdominal radiation therapy. The enrollment for this study comprised 23 patients with pancreatic cancer. For treatments (539 sessions), patients were set up by using isocenter skin marks and thereafter treatment couch was shifted so that the distance between the isocenter and the upper side of the treatment couch was equal to that indicated on the computed tomographic (CT) image. Setup deviation in the A-P direction for CHPS was measured by matching the spine of the digitally reconstructed radiograph (DRR) of a lateral beam at simulation with that of the corresponding time-integrated electronic portal image. For SMPS with no correction (SMPS/NC), setup deviation was calculated based on the couch-level difference between SMPS and CHPS. SMPS/NC was corrected using 2 off-line correction protocols: no action level (SMPS/NAL) and extended NAL (SMPS/eNAL) protocols. Margins to compensate for deviations were calculated using the Stroom formula. A-P deviation > 5mm was observed in 17% of SMPS/NC, 4% of SMPS/NAL, and 4% of SMPS/eNAL sessions but only in one CHPS session. For SMPS/NC, 7 patients (30%) showed deviations at an increasing rate of > 0.1mm/fraction, but for CHPS, no such trend was observed. The standard deviations (SDs) of systematic error (Σ) were 2.6, 1.4, 0.6, and 0.8mm and the root mean squares of random error (σ) were 2.1, 2.6, 2.7, and 0.9mm for SMPS/NC, SMPS/NAL, SMPS/eNAL, and CHPS, respectively. Margins to compensate for the deviations were wide for SMPS/NC (6.7mm), smaller for SMPS/NAL (4.6mm) and SMPS/eNAL (3.1mm), and smallest for CHPS (2.2mm). Achieving better setup with smaller margins, CHPS appears to be a reproducible method for abdominal patient setup.

Purpose We investigated whether surgical rib fixation improved outcomes in patients with traumatic rib fractures. Materials and Methods This was a retrospective study using a Japanese administrative claim and discharge database. We included patients with traumatic rib fractures admitted to hospitals where surgical rib fixation was available from July 1 2010, to March 31, 2013. We detected patients who underwent surgical rib fixation within 10 days of hospital admission (surgical group) and those who did not (control group). The main outcome was prolonged mechanical ventilation, defined as that performed for 5 or more days, or death within 28 days. One-to-four propensity score matching was performed between the 2 groups with adjustment for possible confounders. Results Among 4577 eligible patients, 90 (2.0%) underwent the surgical rib fixation. After the matching, we obtained 84 and 336 patients in the surgical and control groups, respectively. Logistic regression analyses showed that the surgical group was significantly less likely to receive prolonged mechanical ventilation or die within 28 days than the control group (22.6% vs 33.3%; odds ratio, 0.59; 95% confidence interval, 0.36-0.96; P = .034). Conclusions Surgical rib fixation within 10 days of hospital admission may improve outcomes in patients with traumatic rib fractures.

The first total syntheses of multifidosides A-C have been achieved. The synthetic strategy is characterized by catalytic site-selective acylation of unprotected glycoside precursors in the final stage of the synthesis. High functional-group tolerance of the site-selective acylation, promoted by an organocatalyst, enabled the conventionally difficult molecular transformation in a predictable and reliable manner. An advantage of this strategy is to avoid the risks of undesired side reactions during the removal of the protecting groups at the final stage of the total synthesis., Article first published online: 28 AUG 2015

The aim of the this study was to validate the use of an average intensity projection (AIP) for volumetric-modulated arc therapy for stereotactic body radiation therapy (VMAT-SBRT) planning for a moving lung tumor located near the diaphragm. VMAT-SBRT plans were created using AIPs reconstructed from 10 phases of 4DCT images that were acquired with a target phantom moving with amplitudes of 5, 10, 20 and 30 mm. To generate a 4D dose distribution, the static dose for each phase was recalculated and the doses were accumulated by using the phantom position known for each phase. For 10 patients with lung tumors, a deformable registration was used to generate 4D dose distributions. Doses to the target volume obtained from the AIP plan and the 4D plan were compared, as were the doses obtained from each plan to the organs at risk (OARs). The serine/threonine kinase Mst1 plays important roles in the control of immune cell trafficking, proliferation, and differentiation. Previously, we reported that Mst1 was required for thymocyte selection and regulatory T-cell functions, thereby the prevention of autoimmunity in mice. In humans, MST1 null mutations cause T-cell immunodeficiency and hypergammaglobulinemia with autoantibody production. RASSF5C(RAPL) is an activator of MST1 and it is frequently methylated in some tumors. Herein, we investigated methylation of the promoter regions of MST1 and RASSF5C(RAPL) in leukocytes from patients with IgG4-related autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Increased number of CpG methylation in the 5' region of MST1 was detected in AIP patients with extrapancreatic lesions, whereas AIP patients without extrapancreatic lesions were similar to controls. In RA patients, we detected a slight increased CpG methylation in MST1, although the overall number of methylation sites was lower than that of AIP patients with extrapancreatic lesions. There were no significant changes of the methylation levels of the CpG islands in the 5' region of RASSF5C(RAPL) in leukocytes from AIP and RA patients. Consistently, we found a significantly down-regulated expression of MST1 in regulatory T cells of AIP patients. Our results suggest that the decreased expression of MST1 in regulatory T cells due to hypermethylation of the promoter contributes to the pathogenesis of IgG4-related AIP.

In the self-assembly of M(n)L(2n) polyhedra, the bend angle (θ) of the divalent ligand components determines the final structure. The threshold for the sharp structural switch between M12L24 and M24L48 was finely resolved to within just 4° by demonstrating the exclusive formation of M12L24 cuboctahedra or M24L48 rhombicuboctahedra from two similar ligands with θ values of 130° and 134°. This sharp structural switch was fully confirmed by X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and ultracentrifugation analyses.

Short total syntheses of natural glycosides (ellagitannins) were performed through sequential and regioselective functionalization of the hydroxy groups of unprotected glucose. The key reactions are β-selective glycosidation of a gallic acid derivative by using unprotected glucose as a glycosyl donor and catalyst-controlled regioselective introduction of a galloyl group into the inherently less reactive hydroxy group of the glucoside., Article first published online: 9 APR 2015

We present X-ray observations of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) in NGC 4785. The source is a local Seyfert 2 which has not been studied so far in much detail. It was recently detected with high significance in the 15-60 keV band in the 66-month Swift/BAT (Burst Array Telescope) all sky survey, but there have been no prior pointed X-ray observations of this object. With Suzaku, we clearly detect the source below 10 keV, and find it to have a flat continuum and prominent neutral iron fluorescence line with equivalent width ≳1 keV. Fitting the broad-band spectra with physical reflection models shows the source to be a Compton-thick AGN with N_H of at least 2 × 10^24 cm^-2 and absorption-corrected 2-10 keV X-ray power L_2-10 ∼ few times 10^42 erg s^-1. Realistic uncertainties on L_2-10 computed from the joint confidence interval on the intrinsic power-law continuum photon index and normalization are at least a factor of 10. The local bona fide Compton-thick AGN population is highly heterogeneous in terms of WISE mid-infrared source colours, and the nucleus of NGC 4785 appears especially sub-dominant in the mid-infrared when comparing to other Compton-thick AGN. Such sources would not be easily found using mid-infrared selection alone. The extent of host galaxy extinction to the nucleus is not clear, though NGC 4785 shows a complex core with a double bar and inner disc, adding to the list of known Compton-thick AGN in barred host galaxies.

Intermolecular aromatic C(sp2)–H amination promoted by neutral rhodium nitrenoids has been developed. The reactions proceeded with various oxygen-substituted arenes (1.5 equiv.) in a chemo- and regioselective manner. The aromatic C(sp2)–H amination took place at the para position of the oxygen substituent in the presence of benzylic C(sp3)–H bonds and/or C(sp3)–H bonds α to ethereal oxygen.

Angle-resolved secondary electron emission (ARSEE) spectra of atomic sheets have been considered to reflect the unoccupied energy bands of the targets. However, far less is known about the dynamics of electron excitation from the valence bands to the unoccupied bands upon electron impact, leading to emission into the vacuum. Here, the authors keep track of the electrons excited to the unoccupied bands and emitted to the vacuum in real time, position space, and k-space simultaneously by a time-dependent density-functional theory simulation.

In this paper, we study a system of linear differential equations with interaction effects of delay and derive some necessary and sufficient conditions concerned with the absolutely stable. We had already known many results about the scalar equations. On the other hand, the results of the delay systems are not many because the corresponding characteristic equation is too complicated. Under this situation, we introduce the simple and useful method to get the stability criteria and apply to some general system of delay differential equations.

We present the X-UDS survey, a set of wide and deep Chandra observations of the Subaru-XMM Deep/UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (SXDS/UDS) field. The survey consists of 25 observations that cover a total area of 0.33 deg$^{2}$. The observations are combined to provide a nominal depth of ~600 ksec in the central 100 arcmin$^{2}$ region of the field that has been imaged with Hubble/WFC3 by the CANDELS survey and $\sim$200 ksec in the remainder of the field. In this paper, we outline the survey's scientific goals, describe our observing strategy, and detail our data reduction and point source detection algorithms. Our analysis has resulted in a total of 868 band-merged point sources detected with a false-positive Poisson probability of $, 15 pages, 11 figures, published in the Astrophysics Journal Supplement Series

We present a near-infrared (NIR) spectrum of WISE J1042+1641, an extremely red dust-obscured galaxy (DOG), which has been observed with the LIRIS on the 4.2m William Hershel Telescope. This object was selected as a hyper-luminous DOG candidate at z ~ 2 by combining the optical and IR photometric data based on the SDSS and WISE, although its redshift had not yet been confirmed. Based on the LIRIS observation, we confirmed its redshift of 2.521 and total IR luminosity of log(L_IR/L_sun) = 14.57, which satisfies the criterion for an extremely luminous IR galaxy (ELIRG). Moreover, we indicate that this object seems to have an extremely massive black hole with M_BH = 10^10.92 M_sun based on the broad Halpha line: the host stellar mass is derived as M_star = 10^13.55 M_sun by a fit of the spectral energy distribution. Very recently, it has been reported that this object is an anomalous gravitationally lensed quasar based on near-IR high-resolution imaging data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. Its magnification factor has also been estimated with some uncertainty (i.e., mu = 53-122). We investigate the ratio of the black hole to galaxy mass, which is less strongly affected by a lensing magnification factor, instead of the absolute values of the luminosities and masses. We find that the M_BH/M_star ratio (i.e., 0.0140-0.0204) is significantly higher than the local relation, following a sequence of unobscured quasars instead of obscured objects (e.g., submillimeter galaxies) at the same redshift. Moreover, the LIRIS spectrum shows strongly blueshifted oxygen lines with an outflowing velocity of ~ 1100 km/s, and our Swift X-ray observation also supports that this source is an absorbed AGN with an intrinsic column density of N_H = 4.9 x 10^23 cm^-2. We review the current understanding of the cosmological evolution of supermassive black holes in galactic centers elucidated by X-ray surveys of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Hard X-ray observations at energies above 2 keV are the most efficient and complete tools to find "obscured" AGNs, which are dominant populations among all AGNs. Combinations of surveys with various flux limits and survey area have enabled us to determine the space number density and obscuration properties of AGNs as a function of luminosity and redshift. The results have essentially solved the origin of the X-ray background in the energy band below ∼10 keV. The downsizing (or anti-hierarchical) evolution that more luminous AGNs have the space-density peak at higher redshifts has been discovered, challenging theories of galaxy and black hole formation. Finally, we summarize unresolved issues on AGN evolution and prospects for future X-ray missions.

We present the luminosity function of z=4 quasars based on the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program Wide layer imaging data in the g, r, i, z, and y bands covering 339.8 deg^2. From stellar objects, 1666 z~4 quasar candidates are selected by the g-dropout selection down to i=24.0 mag. Their photometric redshifts cover the redshift range between 3.6 and 4.3 with an average of 3.9. In combination with the quasar sample from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in the same redshift range, the quasar luminosity function covering the wide luminosity range of M1450=-22 to -29 mag is constructed. It is well described by a double power-law model with a knee at M1450=-25.36+-0.13 mag and a flat faint-end slope with a power-law index of -1.30+-0.05. The knee and faint-end slope show no clear evidence of redshift evolution from those at z~2. The flat slope implies that the UV luminosity density of the quasar population is dominated by the quasars around the knee, and does not support the steeper faint-end slope at higher redshifts reported at z>5. If we convert the M1450 luminosity function to the hard X-ray 2-10keV luminosity function using the relation between UV and X-ray luminosity of quasars and its scatter, the number density of UV-selected quasars matches well with that of the X-ray-selected AGNs above the knee of the luminosity function. Below the knee, the UV-selected quasars show a deficiency compared to the hard X-ray luminosity function. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The accurate delineation of pancreatic tumor with respiratory motion is challenging. This study demonstrates the application of contrast-enhanced four-dimensional dual-energy computed tomography (CE-4D-DECT) for tumor delineation and assesses the objective and subjective image quality. MATERIAL AND METHODS Twelve patients underwent CE-4D-DECT, and quantitative spectral analysis was performed on the resulting virtual monochromatic images (VMI) to determine the optimal VMI (O-VMI) with the highest contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). The objective value of the CNR between pancreatic parenchyma and tumor, and the subjective measurement with five-point scale were compared between O-VMI, standard VMI (S-VMI, 77 keV) and single energy CT (SECT, 120 kVp). A 35-year-old woman intentionally took 40,000 mg of lithium carbonate, and she was transferred to our hospital with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. She was diagnosed as having bipolar disorder 10 years ago and was receiving oral lithium therapy. Blood test results on arrival were remarkable for a negative anion gap of -2.1 and later, the serum lithium level turned out to be as high as 15.4 mEq/L. Intubation was required because of disrupted consciousness, and continuous hemodiafiltration (CHDF) was immediately started in the intensive care unit to obtain constant removal of lithium. After adding intermittent hemodialysis (IHD) twice during the daytime to accelerate the lithium clearance, CHDF became unnecessary on day 4, and she was extubated on day 6 with complete recovery of consciousness. Close monitoring of the patient data showed recovery of the decreased anion gap as indicator of the serum lithium level reduction. On day 36, she was discharged without any complication and sequela. The current case highlighted the effective use of CHDF between IHD sessions to prevent the rebound elevation of lithium and the role of the anion gap as a surrogate marker of serum lithium concentration during the treatment.

We study the relation between accretion rate (in terms of L/L_(Edd)) and shape of the hard X-ray spectral energy distribution (namely the photon index Γ_x) for a large sample of 228 hard X-ray-selected, low-redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs), drawn from the Swift/BAT AGN Spectroscopic Survey (BASS). This includes 30 AGNs for which black hole mass (and therefore L/L_(Edd)) is measured directly through masers, spatially resolved gas or stellar dynamics, or reverberation mapping. The high-quality and broad energy coverage of the data provided through BASS allow us to examine several alternative determinations of both Γ_x and L/L_(Edd). For the BASS sample as a whole, we find a statistically significant, albeit very weak correlation between Γ_x and L/L_(Edd). The best-fitting relations we find, Γ_x ≃ 0.15 log L/L_(Edd) + const., are considerably shallower than those reported in previous studies. Moreover, we find no corresponding correlations among the subsets of AGN with different MBH determination methodology. In particular, we find no robust evidence for a correlation when considering only those AGN with direct or single-epoch MBH estimates. This latter finding is in contrast to several previous studies which focused on z > 0.5 broad-line AGN. We discuss this tension and conclude that it can be partially accounted for if one adopts a simplified, power-law X-ray spectral model, combined with L/L_(Edd) estimates that are based on the continuum emission and on single-epoch broad-line spectroscopy in the optical regime. We finally highlight the limitations on using Γ_x as a probe of supermassive black hole evolution in deep extragalactic X-ray surveys.
