Abstract

In an earlier study, the authors explored the efficacy of prospective teachers making comments on lesson plans and other materials by using Web environments in small courses in which about 10 students participated. In this study, the authors examined such electronic peer review activities in a larger course with 35 students. The Web environment used in this study was called "eMATE (electronic Multiple Approaches to Teacher Education). (1) Students' comments on their peers' lesson plans; (2) students' decisions on whether or not they should include their peers' comments into the modified version of their lesson plans; and (3) students' evaluation responses were analyzed, in order to confirm the possibility and validity of peer review activities on the process of creating lesson plans in a pre-service training course. Regarding (1) above, based on an analysis of students' comments on their colleagues' lesson plans, the peer review activities have the possibility to integrate content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge or knowledge of learners and their characteristics in their mind. Regarding (2) above, it was inferred that students deliberate whether or not their peers' comments were appropriate to include into modified versions of their lesson plans. And regarding (3) above, students in the course generally considered that (a) using a Web environment for peer review activities of lesson plans was a positive experience (fine, good); (b) making comments on a bulletin board system was easy to do and that 10-student groups were appropriate; and (c) 89.7% of students in the course viewed the "eMATE" environment as very easy or easy to use, when making comments on their peers' lesson plans. Therefore, it was inferred to be an appropriate method to form 10-student groups and to invite students to do peer review activities within each group by using Web environments in a medium-sized course.

Abstract

To help improve communications between its Earth scientists and the general public, NASA recently unveiled the Earth Observatory, a Web site where the public can learn about global climatic and environmental change. The Earth Observatory presents, in lay terms, stories, images, and animations that illustrate the complexities of Earth system science, as well as NASA's use of satellites and remote sensing data to study our home planet. The site's URL is given (http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov). The new Web site is sponsored by the Earth Observing System's (EOS) Project Science Office; Landsat 7, Terra, and Aqua Project Science Offices; and the Goddard DAAC (Distributed Active Archive Center). It is designed to take advantage of new, rapidly-emerging Internet technologies for distributing multimedia information resources via the World Wide Web. As such, the Earth Observatory features real remote sensing data that show key phenomena of change on global and regional scales, as well as background and contextual information written in lay terms. The Earth Observatory web site was launched on April 29, 1999. The level of useage of this site is described.

Abstract

— Innovative systems for user-computer interaction based on the user's eye-gaze behavior have important implications for various applications. Examples include user navigation in large images, typical of astronomy or medicine, and user selection and viewing of multiple video streams. Typically, a web environment is used for these applications. System latency must be negligible, while system obtrusiveness must be small. This paper describes the implementation and initial experimentation on such an innovative system.

Abstract

This paper explores the role of user modelling in live help systems for e-commerce web sites. There are several potential benefits with user modelling in this context: 1) Human assistants can use the personal information in the user models to provide the users with efficient support tailored to their personal needs; 2) Assistants can be more comfortable in their supporting role; 3) Consultation resources can be saved, and thus, financial savings can be made for the e-commerce company. A user modelling approach has been implemented and deployed in a real web environment as part of a live help system. Following the deployment we have analysed consultation dialogue logs and answers to a questionnaire for participating assistants. The initial results show that assistants consider user modelling to be helpful and that consultation dialogues can be an important source for user model data collection.

Abstract

The Semantic Web Challenge 2011 took place at the 10th International Semantic Web Conference held in Bonn, Germany, from 23-27 October 2011. The challenge consisted of two tracks: the Open Track and the Billion Triples Track. The Open Track requires that applications are designed to operate in an open Web environment and that they utilize the semantics of the data which they process, whilst the Billion Triples Track focuses on dealing with very large amounts of RDF data, which has been crawled from the public Web and thus exhibits characteristics such as vocabulary heterogeneity and varying data quality. For the 2011 challenge, we provided the participants of the Billion Triples Track with an RDF data set consisting of approximately 2 billion triples. The data set was crawled by Andreas Harth from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, to whom we are very grateful for the enormous effort that he put into compiling this data set.

Abstract

The Graduate Program in Engineering and Knowledge Management, at Federal University of Santa Catarina, with the support from CAPES PROESP, developed a project which focus is the development of an adaptable and accessible web environment for teaching the discipline of Descriptive Geometry - WebGD. This article presents the parameters needed for social and educational inclusion of students with vision impairment and it is based on a strategy to encourage participation and interaction on communities of practice. A review of literature on distance education, situated cognition and Communities of Practice was held, concepts that support the project WebGD, and a literature review of low vision â?? vision impairment. At the end requirements needed to develop the next steps for the WebGD project are presented.

Abstract

Conversations are proposed as a useful lens through which to consider knowledge-organizing behaviors. Human conversations are sites of knowledge creation, where participants communicate to establish meaning that is contextual and shared. The conversations generated in collaborative online environments offer new opportunities to observe, not only how knowledge is created, but also how users participate in various knowledge-organizing activities. In a Web environment pervaded by conversational forms - social classification systems, blogs, and wikis - participatory knowledge organization is an emerging phenomenon that warrants further exploration. Other areas for research are suggested, including the potential promise to leverage participatory knowledge organization into future applications and developments of Web functionality.

Abstract

This work presents a system which allows medicine practitioners to model, to manipulate and to use virtual surgical instruments. The system allows operations like upgrade, modification and inclusion of new surgical instruments; also, it has a graphic interface which facilitates learning and an understandable help system for the final user. This tool contributes to the learning of surgical instrument manipulation for medicine students. On the other hand, the implementation of the system in a WEB environment allows its use by remote practitioners via internet.

Abstract

This paper presents the development of a Web Environment for Surgical Skills Training on Human Systems (WESST - HS). WESST - HS was conceived in order to satisfy the need to have a generic specification of an organ which could be further used within a surgical simulation. The initial goal was reached and surpassed; at the end, it was found that in medicine is better to treat organs like systems and that WESST - HS could be used independently. The generic specification is included in a web enabled Java application that lets the user interact with system’s and part’s information like shape, size, weight and color. Also, it is possible to display, scale, rotate and translate a three dimensional (3D) representation of the human systems from a file. This article is a description of the elements analyzed and developed in all the stages of the project.

The present study investigated whether there is a correlation between user performance and compliance withscreen-design guidelines found in the literature. Ratherthan test individual guidelines and their interactions, theauthors took a more holistic approach and tested a compilation of guidelines. Nine bibliographic display formatswere scored using a checklist of eighty-six guidelines.Twenty-seven participants completed ninety search tasksusing the displays in a simulated Web environment.None of the correlations indicated that user performancewas statistically significantly faster with greater conformity to guidelines. In some cases, user performance wasactually significantly slower with greater conformity toguidelines. In a supplementary study, a different set offorty-three guidelines and the user performance data fromthe main study were used. Again, none of the correlationsindicated that user performance was statistically significantly faster with greater conformity to guidelines.

ResumenEl objeto de este trabajo es verificar empíricamente la influencia que sobre el rendimiento de las empresas tienen las tecnologías de información y comunicación (TIC); para esto se estudiaron 1.201 micro, pequeñas y medianas empresas (Mipymes) de Colombia a las que se consultó sobre la disponibilidad y utilización de 8 herramientas TIC en ambiente web y sobre su rendimiento tanto a nivel global, como específicamente en su rentabilidad, participación en el mercado, procesos internos, relaciones humanas y relaciones con el entorno. Los resultados obtenidos mediante regresiones lineales muestran que las TIC influyen positivamente sobre los diferentes factores de rendimiento observados. Estos hallazgos son de utilidad para empresarios y entidades que promueven el conocimiento y el desarrollo de las Mipymes.AbstractThe purpose of this paper is to empirically test the impact on the performance of a company with use of information and communications technology (ICT). To do this 1,201 micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Colombia were studied. They were asked about use of eight ICT tools for web environment, and their performance both globally, and specifically in its profitability, market share, internal processes, human relations and relationships with the environment. The results obtained, through multiple linear regressions, show that the use of ICT generates a largely positive impact in all the performance factors observed. These findings are useful for entrepreneurs, and organizations that promote knowledge and development of MSMEs.

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá návrhom aplikácie na zobrazovanie mapových podkladov, ako aj jej implementáciou do webového prostredia. Ciežom bolo vytvorenie aplikácie nezávislej na platforme. V úvode práca zoznamuje s problematikou multiplatformového programovania, v ďalších kapitolách predstavuje programovací jazyk Java a zoznamuje s použitým vývojovým prostredím. Následne sa práca venuje rozdeleniu riešenia danej problematiky na dve možnosti a návrhu zobrazovania mapových podkladov. Ďalej je vysvetlený postup programovania požadovanej aplikácie s jej následnou implementáciou do webového prostredia. Pri realizácii navrhovanej aplikácie bolo prihliadané na jej modularitu. V závere práce je zhrnutý postup riešenia a porovnanie vhodnosti použitých metód., This thesis deals with designing application for displaying cartographic data and its implementation to the web environment. The goal was to design an application which will be independent on platform. Introduction provides basic information about the Java programming language, next chapter introduces to the applied developing environment. Then the thesis deals with an option of dividing the solution on two possibilities and the concept of displaying cartographic data. Further is described design procedure of programming application with its implementation to the web environment. Modularity of this application was ensured during its realization. In the conclusion the process of developing application is resumed and both of the solutions are compared.

Predkladaná práca sa zaoberá návrhom aplikácie na zobrazovanie mapových podkladov, ako aj jej implementáciou do webového prostredia. Ciežom bolo vytvorenie aplikácie nezávislej na platforme. V úvode práca zoznamuje s problematikou multiplatformového programovania, v ďalších kapitolách predstavuje programovací jazyk Java a zoznamuje s použitým vývojovým prostredím. Následne sa práca venuje rozdeleniu riešenia danej problematiky na dve možnosti a návrhu zobrazovania mapových podkladov. Ďalej je vysvetlený postup programovania požadovanej aplikácie s jej následnou implementáciou do webového prostredia. Pri realizácii navrhovanej aplikácie bolo prihliadané na jej modularitu. V závere práce je zhrnutý postup riešenia a porovnanie vhodnosti použitých metód., This thesis deals with designing application for displaying cartographic data and its implementation to the web environment. The goal was to design an application which will be independent on platform. Introduction provides basic information about the Java programming language, next chapter introduces to the applied developing environment. Then the thesis deals with an option of dividing the solution on two possibilities and the concept of displaying cartographic data. Further is described design procedure of programming application with its implementation to the web environment. Modularity of this application was ensured during its realization. In the conclusion the process of developing application is resumed and both of the solutions are compared.

Tento projekt se věnuje problematice zobrazení velkých hierarchických struktur, zejména možnostem vizualizace stromových grafů. Cílem je implementace hyperbolického prohlížeče ve webovém prostředí, který využívá potenciálu neeukleidovské geometrie k promítnutí stromu na hyperbolickou rovinu. Velký důraz je kladen na uživatelsky přívětivou manipulaci se zobrazovaným modelem a snadnou orientaci., This project deals with the graphic portrayal of large hierarchies and explores possibilities of tree graphs visualization. The aim is to implement a hyperbolic browser in web environment. The browser shall exploit the potential of non-euclidean geometry and project the tree onto hyperbolic plane. Great emphasis shall be placed on smooth user interface allowing seamless navigation and orientation.

Abstract

Although Web technology is widely used in today’s classrooms, educationists are still unsure of its capability to generate meaningful learning. As the numbers of web-based learning (WBL) materials keep increasing tremendously, more students will rely on such resources in their learning process. WBL is always seen as a platform to deliver information, and as such, most of its learning materials are linear and tutorial-based. A WBL that applies a guided inquiry approach offers an alternative as it allows the users to explore the environment based on a given problem. This study investigated the effectiveness of two learning approaches in a WBL environment (guided inquiry, GIA and tutorial, TuA) on the achievement of students with different cognitive styles (Field Independent, FI and Field Dependent, FD). Two versions of a WBL material (TuA and GIA versions) were developed for this purpose. The findings revealed that: (1) the GIA group performed significantly better than the TuA group, (2) the FI students performed significantly better than the FD students did, (3) the FI students in the GIA group performed significantly better than did the FI students in the TuA group, (4) a significant difference in achievement was reported between the FI and the FD students in the GIA group, and (5) among the FD students, no significant difference in achievement between those who received GIA and those who received TuA approaches. These findings suggest that Guided Inquiry has the potential to be an effective learning approach in a web environment.

Abstract

This paper deals with a set of useful methods for presenting large-scale models of real cities in a web environment. While acquisition issues are outlined only briefly, this study focuses on the optimal organization of city models and efficient rendering techniques. We also address data optimization for real-time delivery. The methods under discussion are illustrated by examples taken from several existing web presentations developed by our students, especially from the Virtual Old Prague project. Although the principles are general, specific attention is paid to the use of standards developed by the Web3D Consortium.

Background Casemix Grouper software is a tool to improve efficiency and quality of care in hospitals and medical centres. The utilisation of Casemix Grouper among hospitals is very limited and depends on their existing local machine and hardware. While Casemix Grouper provides a crucial output in the form of Casemix groups, the hardware machine should not be a limiting factor to hospital. Thus, the objective of this development was to provide the utility for end user to use the Casemix Grouper on web environment.
