Search

We report on a state characterized by a zero differential resistance observed in very high Landau levels of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system. Emerging from a minimum of Hall field-induced resistance oscillations at low temperatures, this state exists over a continuous range of magnetic fields extending well below the onset of the Shubnikov-de Haas effect. The minimum current required to support this state is largely independent on the magnetic field, while the maximum current increases with the magnetic field tracing the onset of inter-Landau level scattering.

We report the first unambiguous observation of a fractional quantum Hall state in the Landau level of a two-dimensional hole sample at the filling factor $\nu=8/3$. We identified this state by a quantized Hall resistance and an activated temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistance and found an energy gap of 40 mK. To our surprise the particle-hole conjugate state at filling factor $\nu=7/3$ in our sample does not develop down to 6.9 mK. This observation is contrary to that in electron samples in which the 7/3 state is typically more stable than the 8/3 state. We present evidence that the asymmetry between the 7/3 and 8/3 states in our hole sample is due to Landau level mixing.

Subband structure and depolarization shifts in an ultra-high mobility GaAs/Al_{0.24}Ga_{0.76}As quantum well are studied using magneto-infrared spectroscopy via resonant subband Landau level coupling. Resonant couplings between the 1st and up to the 4th subbands are identified by well-separated anti-level-crossing split resonance, while the hy-lying subbands were identified by the cyclotron resonance linewidth broadening in the literature. In addition, a forbidden intersubband transition (1st to 3rd) has been observed. With the precise determination of the subband structure, we find that the depolarization shift can be well described by the semiclassical slab plasma model, and the possible origins for the forbidden transition are discussed., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

We report on the study of cleaved-edge-overgrown line junctions with a serendipitously created narrow opening in an otherwise thin, precise line barrier. Two sets of zero-bias anomalies are observed with an enhanced conductance for filling factors $\nu > 1$ and a strongly suppressed conductance for $\nu < 1$. A transition between the two behaviors is found near $\nu \approx 1$. The zero-bias anomaly (ZBA) line shapes find explanation in Luttinger liquid models of tunneling between quantum Hall edge states. The ZBA for $\nu < 1$ occurs from strong backscattering induced by suppression of quasiparticle tunneling between the edge channels for the $n = 0$ Landau levels. A modest in-plane magnetic field \Bpar\ is sufficient to destroy the fractional quantized Hall states at $\nu = 5/2$ and 7/2 and replace them with anisotropic compressible phases. Remarkably, we find that at larger \Bpar\ these anisotropic phases can themselves be replaced by isotropic compressible phases reminiscent of the composite fermion fluid at $\nu = 1/2$. We present strong evidence that this transition is a consequence of the mixing of Landau levels from different electric subbands. We report the observation of a resonance in the microwave spectra of the real diagonal conductivities of a two-dimensional electron system within a range of ~ +- .0.015 $ from filling factor $\nu=1/3$. The resonance is remarkably similar to resonances previously observed near integer $\nu$, and is interpreted as the collective pinning mode of a disorder-pinned Wigner solid phase of $e/3$-charged carriers ., Comment: version with edits for clarity, improved Figure 3 and added reference

The two-dimensional electron system (2DES) is a unique laboratory for the physics of interacting particles. Application of a large magnetic field produces massively degenerate quantum levels known as Landau levels. Within a Landau level the kinetic energy of the electrons is suppressed, and electron-electron interactions set the only energy scale. Coulomb interactions break the degeneracy of the Landau levels and can cause the electrons to order into complex ground states. In the high energy single particle spectrum of this system, we observe salient and unexpected structure that extends across a wide range of Landau level filling fractions. The structure appears only when the 2DES is cooled to very low temperature, indicating that it arises from delicate ground state correlations. We characterize this structure by its evolution with changing electron density and applied magnetic field. We present two possible models for understanding these observations. Some of the energies of the features agree qualitatively with what might be expected for composite Fermions, which have proven effective for interpreting other experiments in this regime. At the same time, a simple model with electrons localized on ordered lattice sites also generates structure similar to those observed in the experiment. Neither of these models alone is sufficient to explain the observations across the entire range of densities measured. The discovery of this unexpected prominent structure in the single particle spectrum of an otherwise thoroughly studied system suggests that there exist core features of the 2DES that have yet to be understood., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures

We investigate dynamic nuclear polarization in quantum point contacts (QPCs) in the integer and fractional quantum Hall regimes. Following the application of a dc bias, fractional plateaus in the QPC shift symmetrically about half filling of the lowest Landau level, \nu=1/2, suggesting an interpretation in terms of composite fermions. Polarizing and detecting at different filling factors indicates that Zeeman energy is reduced by the induced nuclear polarization. We report the observation of a new phenomenon of colossal magnetoresistance in a 40 nm wide GaAs quantum well in the presence of an external magnetic field applied parallel to the high-mobility 2D electron layer. In a strong magnetic field, the magnetoresistance is observed to increase by a factor of ~300 from 0 to 45T without the system undergoing any metal-insulator transition. We discuss how this colossal magnetoresistance effect cannot be attributed to the spin degree-of-freedom or localization physics, but most likely emanates from strong magneto-orbital coupling between the two-dimensional electron gas and the magnetic field. Our observation is consistent with a field-induced 2D-to-3D transition in the confined electronic system.

The longitudinal thermopower of ultra-high mobility two-dimensional electrons has been measured at both zero magnetic field and at high fields in the compressible metallic state at filling factor $\nu = 3/2$ and the incompressible fractional quantized Hall state at $\nu = 5/2$. At zero field our results demonstrate that the thermopower is dominated by electron diffusion for temperatures below about $T = 150$ mK. A diffusion dominated thermopower is also observed at $\nu = 3/2$ and allows us to extract an estimate of the composite fermion effective mass. At $\nu = 5/2$ both the temperature and magnetic field dependence of the observed thermopower clearly signal the presence of the energy gap of this fractional quantized Hall state. We find that the thermopower in the vicinity of $\nu = 5/2$ exceeds that recently predicted under the assumption that the entropy of the 2D system is dominated by non-abelian quasiparticle exchange statistics., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures.

We report on magneto-oscillations in differential resistivity of a two-dimensional electron system subject to intense microwave radiation. The period of these oscillations is determined not only by microwave frequency but also by its intensity. A theoretical model based on quantum kinetics at high microwave power captures all important characteristics of this phenomenon which is strongly nonlinear in microwave intensity. Our results demonstrate a crucial role of the multi-photon processes near the cyclotron resonance and its harmonics in the presence of strong dc electric field and offer a unique way to reliably determine the intensity of microwaves acting on electrons., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Understanding the flow of spins in magnetic layered structures has enabled an increase in data storage density in hard drives over the past decade of more than two orders of magnitude1. Following this remarkable success, the field of 'spintronics' or spin-based electronics is moving beyond effects based on local spin polarisation and is turning its attention to spin-orbit interaction (SOI) effects, which hold promise for the production, detection and manipulation of spin currents, allowing coherent transmission of information within a device. While SOI-induced spin transport effects have been observed in two- and three-dimensional samples, these have been subtle and elusive, often detected only indirectly in electrical transport or else with more sophisticated techniques. Here we present the first observation of a predicted 'spin-orbit gap' in a one-dimensional sample, where counter-propagating spins, constituting a spin current, are accompanied by a clear signal in the easily-measured linear conductance of the system., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information

Using Coulomb drag as a probe, we explore the excitonic phase transition in quantum Hall bilayers at nu=1 as a function of Zeeman energy, E_Z. The critical layer separation d/l for exciton condensation initially increases rapidly with E_Z, but then reaches a maximum and begins a gentle decline. At high E_Z, where both the excitonic phase at small d/l and the compressible phase at large d/l are fully spin polarized, we find that the width of the transition, as a function of d/l, is much larger than at small E_Z and persists in the limit of zero temperature. It is a theoretical conjecture that 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state charge e/4 excitations may obey exotic non-Abelian statistics. In edge state interference these purported non-Abelian quasiparticles should display period e/4 Aharonov-Bohm oscillations if the interfering quasiparticle encircles an even number of localized e/4 charges, but suppression of oscillations if an odd number is encircled. To test this hypothesis, here we perform swept area interference measurements at 5/2. We observe an alternating pattern of e/4 and e/2 period oscillations in resistance. This aperiodic alternation is consistent with proposed non-Abelian properties: the e/4 oscillations occur for encircling an even number of localized quasiparticles, e/2 oscillations are expressed when encircling an odd number. Aperiodic alternation corresponds to the expected area sweep sampling the localized quasiparticles. Importantly, adding localized quasiparticles to the encircled area by changing magnetic field induces interchange of the e/4 and e/2 oscillation periods, specifically consistent with non-Abelian e/4 quasiparticles., Comment: 27 pages, 10 figures; revised version contains additional new data

Hall effect of two-dimensional holes that are spin-polarized by a strong parallel magnetic field was explored with a small tilt angle. The Hall resistivity increases nonlinearly with the magnetic field and exhibits negative corrections. The anomalous negative corrections increase with the perpendicular magnetization of the two-dimensional hole system. We attribute this to the anomalous Hall effect of spin-polarized carriers in a nonmagnetic system. Tunneling measurements on 2D electron gases at high magnetic field reveal a qualitative difference between the two spin sublevels of the lowest Landau level. While the tunneling current-voltage characteristic at filling factor $\nu = 1/2$ is a single peak shifted from zero bias by a Coulomb pseudogap, the spectrum at $\nu=3/2$ shows a well-resolved double peak structure. This difference is present regardless of whether $\nu =1/2$ and $\nu = 3/2$ occur at the same or different magnetic fields. Microwave pinning-mode resonances found around integer quantum Hall effects, are a signature of crystallized quasiparticles or holes. Application of in-plane magnetic field to these crystals, increasing the Zeeman energy, has negligible effect on the resonances just below Landau level filling $\nu=2$, but increases the pinning frequencies near $\nu=1$, particularly for smaller quasiparticle/hole densities. The charge dynamics near $\nu=1$, characteristic of a crystal order, are affected by spin, in a manner consistent with a Skyrme crystal.

The quantum Hall plateau transition was studied at temperatures down to 1 mK in a random alloy disordered high mobility two-dimensional electron gas. A perfect power-law scaling with \kappa=0.42 was observed from 1.2K down to 12mK. This perfect scaling terminates sharply at a saturation temperature of T_s~10mK. The saturation is identified as a finite-size effect when the quantum phase coherence length (L_{\phi} ~ T^{-p/2}) reaches the sample size (W) of millimeter scale. From a size dependent study, T_s \propto W^{-1} was observed and p=2 was obtained. At low energy, electrons in doped graphene sheets behave like massless Dirac fermions with a Fermi velocity which does not depend on carrier density. Here we show that modulating a two-dimensional electron gas with a long-wavelength periodic potential with honeycomb symmetry can lead to the creation of isolated massless Dirac points with tunable Fermi velocity. We provide detailed theoretical estimates to realize such artificial graphene-like system and discuss an experimental realization in a modulation-doped GaAs quantum well. When a strong magnetic field is applied perpendicularly (along z) to a sheet confining electrons to two dimensions (x-y), highly correlated states emerge as a result of the interplay between electron-electron interactions, confinement and disorder. These so-called fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids form a series of states which ultimately give way to a periodic electron solid that crystallizes at high magnetic fields. This quantum phase of electrons has been identified previously as a disorder-pinned two-dimensional Wigner crystal with broken translational symmetry in the x-y plane. Here, we report our discovery of a new insulating quantum phase of electrons when a very high magnetic field, up to 45T, is applied in a geometry parallel (y-direction) to the two-dimensional electron sheet. Our data point towards this new quantum phase being an electron solid in a "quasi-3D" configuration induced by orbital coupling with the parallel field.

Electrically detected nuclear magnetic resonance was studied in detail in a two-dimensional electron gas as a function of current bias and temperature. We show that applying a relatively modest dc-current bias, I_dc ~ 0.5 microAmps, can induce a re-entrant and even enhanced nuclear spin signal compared with the signal obtained under similar thermal equilibrium conditions at zero current bias. Our observations suggest that dynamic nuclear spin polarization by small current flow is possible in a two-dimensional electron gas, allowing for easy manipulation of the nuclear spin by simple switching of a dc current., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figs

We study the temperature evolution of the non-linear oscillatory magnetoresistance in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system subject to a strong dc electric field. We find that the decay of the oscillation amplitude with increasing temperature originates primarily from increasing quantum scattering rate entering the Dingle factor. We investigate nonlinear transport in electronic Fabry-Perot interferometers in the integer quantum Hall regime. For interferometers sufficiently large that Coulomb blockade effects are absent, a checkerboard-like pattern of conductance oscillations as a function of dc bias and perpendicular magnetic field is observed. Edge-state velocities extracted from the checkerboard data are compared to model calculations and found to be consistent with a crossover from skipping orbits at low fields to E x B drift at high fields. We report on temperature dependence of acoustic phonon-induced resistance oscillations in very high mobility two-dimensional electron systems. We observe that the temperature dependence is non-monotonic and that higher order oscillations are best developed at progressively lower temperatures. We report on the temperature dependence of microwave-induced resistance oscillations in high-mobility two-dimensional electron systems. Two distinct types of magnetoresistance oscillations are observed in two electronic Fabry-Perot interferometers of different sizes in the integer quantum Hall regime. Measuring these oscillations as a function of magnetic field and gate voltages, we observe three signatures that distinguish the two types. The oscillations observed in a 2.0 square micron device are understood to arise from the Coulomb blockade mechanism, and those observed in an 18 square micron device from the Aharonov-Bohm mechanism. We report on magnetization measurements performed on a series of Fe$_{x}$Ni$_{1-x}$Zr$_{2}$ superconducting metallic glasses with $0\leq x\leq0.5$ using the Hall effect of a nearby 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaAs/Al$_{0.33}$Ga$_{0.67}$As heterostructure as a local probe. The great sensitivity of the Hall effect of the 2DEG in such heterostructure is exploited to determine the magnetization of the superconductor due to the Meissner effect and flux trapping. The data is used to determine the lower critical field B$_{c1}$ of the superconductors as a function of temperature. Surprisingly large fluctuations in the magnetization are also observed and attributed to the presence of large flux clusters in the superconductor., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We study the anisotropic pinning-mode resonances in the rf conductivity spectra of the stripe phase of 2D electron systems (2DES) around Landau level filling 9/2, in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, B_ip. The polarization along which the resonance is observed switches as B_ip is applied, consistent with the reorientation of the stripes. The resonance frequency, a measure of the pinning interaction between the 2DES and disorder, increases with B_ip. The magnitude of this increase indicates that disorder interaction is playing an important role in determining the stripe orientation.

We study microwave photoresistivity oscillations in a high mobility two-dimensional electron system subject to strong dc electric fields. We find that near the second subharmonic of the cyclotron resonance the frequency of the resistivity oscillations with dc electric field is twice the frequency of the oscillations at the cyclotron resonance, its harmonics, or in the absence of microwave radiation. This observation is discussed in terms of the microwave-induced sidebands in the density of states and the interplay between different scattering processes in the separated Landau level regime., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report the observation of an even-denominator fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state at $\nu=1/4$ in a high quality, wide GaAs quantum well. The sample has a quantum well width of 50 nm and an electron density of $n_e=2.55\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$. We have performed transport measurements at $T\sim35$ mK in magnetic fields up to 45 T. When the sample is perpendicular to the applied magnetic field, the diagonal resistance displays a kink at $\nu=1/4$. Upon tilting the sample to an angle of $\theta=20.3^o$ a clear FQH state at emerges at $\nu=1/4$ with a plateau in the Hall resistance and a strong minimum in the diagonal resistance., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. CoFe/FeMn, FeMn/CoFe bilayers and CoFe/FeMn/CoFe trilayers were grown in magnetic field and at room temperature. The exchange bias field $H_{eb}$ depends strongly on the order of depositions and is much higher at CoFe/FeMn than at FeMn/CoFe interfaces. By combining the two bilayer structures into symmetric CoFe/FeMn($t_\mathrm{FeMn}$)/CoFe trilayers, $H_{eb}^t$ and $H_{eb}^b$ of the top and bottom CoFe layers, respectively, are both enhanced. Reducing $t_\mathrm{FeMn}$ of the trilayers also results in enhancements of both $H_{eb}^b$ and $H_{eb}^t$. These results evidence the propagation of exchange bias between the two CoFe/FeMn and FeMn/CoFe interfaces mediated by the FeMn antiferromagnetic order.

Recent experiments have shown several effects indicative of Bose-Einstein condensation in polaritons in GaAs-based microcavity structures when a harmonic potential trap for the two-dimensional polaritons is created by applied stress. These effects include both real-space and momentum-space narrowing, first-order coherence, and onset of linear polarization above a particle density threshold. Similar effects have been seen in systems without traps, raising the question of how important the role of the trap is in these experiments. In this paper we present results for both trapped conditions and resonant, non-trapped conditions in the same sample. We find that the results are qualitatively different, with two distinct types of transitions. At low density in the trap, the polaritons remain in the strong-coupling regime while going through the threshold for onset of coherence; at higher density, there is a different threshold behavior which occurs with weak coupling and can be identified with lasing; this transition occurs both with and without a trap.

We use interlayer tunneling to study bilayer 2D electron systems at $\nu_T = 1$ over a wide range of charge density imbalance, $\Delta \nu =\nu_1-\nu_2$, between the two layers. We find that the strongly enhanced tunneling associated with the coherent excitonic $\nu_T = 1$ phase at small layer separation can survive at least up to an imbalance of $\Delta \nu$ = 0.5, i.e $(\nu_1, \nu_2)$ = (3/4, 1/4). Phase transitions between the excitonic $\nu_T = 1$ state and bilayer states which lack significant interlayer correlations can be induced in three different ways: by increasing the effective interlayer spacing $d/\ell$, the temperature $T$, or the charge imbalance, $\Delta \nu$. We observe that close to the phase boundary the coherent $\nu_T = 1$ phase can be absent at $\Delta \nu$ = 0, present at intermediate $\Delta \nu$, but then absent again at large $\Delta \nu$, thus indicating an intricate phase competition between it and incoherent quasi-independent layer states. At zero imbalance, the critical $d/\ell$ shifts linearly with temperature, while at $\Delta \nu$ = 1/3 the critical $d/\ell$ is only weakly dependent on $T$. At $\Delta \nu$ = 1/3 we report the first observation of a direct phase transition between the coherent excitonic $\nu_T = 1$ bilayer integer quantum Hall phase and the pair of single layer fractional quantized Hall states at $\nu_1$ = 2/3 and $\nu_2=1/3$., Comment: 13 pages, 8 postscript figures. We observe in state-of-the-art GaAs based 2D electron systems microwave induced photo-current and photo-voltage oscillations around zero as a function of the applied magnetic field. The photo-signals pass zero whenever the microwave frequency is close to a multiple of the cyclotron resonance frequency. They originate from built-in electric fields due to for instance band bending at contacts. The oscillations correspond to a suppression (screening) or an enhancement ("anti-screening") of these fields by the photo-excited electrons.

A standing problem in low dimensional electron systems is the nature of the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state: its elementary excitations are a focus for both elucidating the state's properties and as candidates in methods to perform topological quantum computation. Interferometric devices may be employed to manipulate and measure quantum Hall edge excitations. Here we use a small area edge state interferometer designed to observe quasiparticle interference effects. Oscillations consistent in detail with the Aharanov-Bohm effect are observed for integer and fractional quantum Hall states (filling factors 2, 5/3, and 7/3) with periods corresponding to their respective charges and magnetic field positions. With these as charge calibrations, at 5/2 filling factor and at lowest temperatures periodic transmission through the device consistent with quasiparticle charge e/4 is observed. The principal finding of this work is that in addtion to these e/4 oscillations, periodic structures corresponding to e/2 are also observed at 5/2 and at lowest temperatures. Properties of the e/4 and e/2 oscillations are examined with the device sensitivity sufficient to observe temperature evolution of the 5/2 quasiparticle interference. In the model of quasiparticle interference, this presence of an effective e/2 period may empirically reflect an e/2 quasiparticle charge, or may reflect multiple passes of the e/4 quasiparticle around the interferometer. These results are discussed within a picture of e/4 quasiparticle excitations potentially possessing non-Abelian statistics. Using a tilted field geometry, the effect of an in-plane magnetic field on the even denominator nu = 5/2 fractional quantum Hall state is studied. The energy gap of the nu = 5/2 state is found to collapse linearly with the in-plane magnetic field above ~0.5 T. In contrast, a strong enhancement of the gap is observed for the nu = 7/3 state. The radically distinct tilted-field behaviour between the two states is discussed in terms of Zeeman and magneto-orbital coupling within the context of the proposed Moore-Read pfaffian wavefunction for the 5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect.

The area and perimeter dependence of the Josephson-like interlayer tunneling signature of the coherent $\nu_T=1$ quantum Hall phase in bilayer two-dimensional electron systems is examined. Electrostatic top gates of various sizes and shapes are used to locally define distinct $\nu_T=1$ regions in the same sample. Near the phase boundary with the incoherent $\nu_T=1$ state at large layer separation, our results demonstrate that the tunneling conductance in the coherent phase is closely proportional to the total area of the tunneling region. This implies that tunneling at $\nu_T=1$ is a bulk phenomenon in this regime., Comment: 5 pages, 3 postscript figures

We study magnetoresistivity oscillations in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system subject to both microwave and dc electric fields. First, we observe that the oscillation amplitude is a periodic function of the inverse magnetic field and is strongly suppressed at microwave frequencies near half-integers of the cyclotron frequency. Second, we obtain a complete set of conditions for the differential resistivity extrema and saddle points. These findings indicate the importance of scattering without microwave absorption and a special role played by microwave-induced scattering events antiparallel to the electric field., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Theory predicts that quasiparticle tunneling between the counter-propagating edges in a fractional quantum Hall state can be used to measure the effective quasiparticle charge e* and dimensionless interaction parameter g, and thereby characterize the many-body wavefunction describing the state. We report measurements of quasiparticle tunneling in a high mobility GaAs two dimensional electron system in the fractional quantum Hall state at nu=5/2 using a gate-defined constriction to bring the edges close together. We find the dc-bias peaks in the tunneling conductance at different temperatures collapse onto a single curve when scaled, in agreement with weak tunneling theory. Various models for the \nu=5/2 state predict different values for g. We study the radio-frequency diagonal conductivities of the anisotropic stripe phases of higher Landau levels near half integer fillings. In the hard direction, in which larger dc resistivity occurs, the spectrum exhibits a striking resonance, while in the orthogonal, easy direction, no resonance is discernable. The resonance is interpreted as a pinning mode of the stripe phase.

We investigate effects of lateral confinement on spin splitting of energy levels in 2D hole gases grown on [311] GaAs. We found that lateral confinement enhances anisotropy of spin splitting relative to the 2D gas for both confining directions. Unexpectedly, the effective $g$-factor does not depend on the 1D energy level number $N$ for $B\|[0\bar{1}1]$ while it has strong $N$-dependence for $B\|[\bar{2}33]$. Apart from quantitative difference in the spin splitting of energy levels for the two orthogonal confinement directions we also report qualitative differences in the appearance of spin-split plateaus, with non-quantized plateaus observed only for the confinement in $[0\bar{1}1]$ direction. The fractional quantum Hall effect is observed at low field, in a regime where the cyclotron energy is smaller than the Coulomb interaction. The nu=5/2 excitation gap is measured to be 262+/-15 mK at ~2.6 T, in good agreement with previous measurements performed on samples with similar mobility, but with electronic density larger by a factor of two. The role of disorder on the nu=5/2 gap is examined. Comparison between experiment and theory indicates that a large discrepancy remains for the intrinsic gap extrapolated from the infinite mobility (zero disorder) limit. In contrast, no such large discrepancy is found for the nu=1/3 Laughlin state. The observation of the nu=5/2 state in the low-field regime implies that inclusion of non-perturbative Landau level mixing may be necessary to better understand the energetics of half-filled fractional quantum hall liquids., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; typo corrected, comment expanded

We present a spectrum of experimental data on the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states in the first excited Landau level, obtained in an ultrahigh mobility two-dimensional electron system (2DES) and at very low temperatures and report the following results: For the even-denominator FQHE states, the sample dependence of the nu=5/2 state clearly shows that disorder plays an important role in determining the energy gap at nu=5/2. For the developing nu=19/8 FQHE state the temperature dependence of the Rxx minimum implies an energy gap of ~5mK.The energy gaps of the odd-denominator FQHE states at nu=7/3 and 8/3 also increase with decreasing disorder, similar to the gap at 5/2 state. Unexpectedly and contrary to earlier data on lower mobility samples, in this ultra-high quality specimen, the nu=13/5 state is missing, while its particle-hole conjugate state, the nu=12/5 state, is a fully developed FQHE state. We speculate that this disappearance might indicate a spin polarization of the nu=13/5 state. Finally, the temperature dependence is studied for the two-reentrant integer quantum Hall states around nu=5/2 and is found to show a very narrow temperature range for the transition from quantized to classical value., Comment: to be published

The zero-field temperature-dependence of the resistivity of two-dimensional holes are observed to exhibit two qualitatively different characteristics for a fixed carrier density for which only the metallic behavior of the so-called metal-insulator transition is anticipated. As $T$ is lowered from 150 mK to 0.5 mK, the sign of the derivative of the resistivity with respect to $T$ changes from being positive to negative when the temperature is lowered below $\sim$30 mK and the resistivity continuously rises with cooling down to 0.5 mK, suggesting a crossover from being metal-like to insulator-like.

A study of the resistively detected nuclear magnetic resonance (RDNMR) lineshape in the vicinity of $\nu=1$ was performed on a high-mobility 2D electron gas formed in GaAs/AlGaAs. In higher Landau levels, application of an RF field at the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency coincides with an observed minimum in the longitudinal resistance, as predicted by the simple hyperfine interaction picture. Near $\nu=1$ however, an anomalous dispersive lineshape is observed where a resistance peak follows the usual minimum. In an effort to understand the origin of this anomalous peak we have studied the resonance under various RF and sample conditions. Interestingly, we show that the lineshape can be completely inverted by simply applying a DC current.
