This paper investigates broad empirical picture of wage differential between informal and formal wage worker across different sector, gender, industry, education, social group and state as well as informal and formal sector in India with the 55th (1999-2000) and 66th round (2009-2010) household survey on employment and unemployment conducted by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO). This study shows informal worker earns approximately two times less then formal worker in both informal as well as formal sector. Wage difference is sharp in case of skilled labour as compared to unskilled and semi-skilled labour. Compound annual growth of wage is very sluggish in all categories of labour. Formal worker earn two to three times more than informal labour in informal as well as in formal sector.

In New Economic Geography, recent models have shown that idiosyncratic preferences of workers for locations act as a dispersion force affecting the number and stability of equilibrium population distributions. Yet those models are based on ad hoc deterministic adjustment procedures that have two shortcomings. Firstly, they remove the aggregate effect of idiosyncratic preferences on the collective spatial dynamics of workers, whose study would require the use of specific notions of equilibrium stability. Secondly, these adjustment dynamics lack an explicit time unit that prevents adjustment trajectories to be expressed as dynamic scenarios. Those two shortcomings strive against the use of New Economic Geography models to support policy recommendations. Starting from a classic core-periphery model of New Economic Geography, this paper proposes a novel approach to adjustment dynamics, based on stochastic migration models, by which the dynamics of the population distribution is a continuous-time Markov chain. Using a diffusion approximation, the dynamic system is reduced to a set of Itô stochastic differential equations, which is an original contribution to New Economic Geography. In those equations, deterministic and stochastic effects are still distinct at the aggregate scale, which enables to numerically compute equilibrium population distributions as well as to evaluate their stability and selection under stochastic perturbations generated by idiosyncratic preferences. Those equations also enable to complete expected adjustment trajectories with an explicit time unit and with confidence intervals, for different scenarios. Hence this paper is a substantial improvement of the capacity of New Economic Geography models to support policy recommendations.

Published online: 01 Dec 2017 The paper investigates the wage assimilation of foreign immigrants and internal migrants in Italy, comparing them with stayers. Control for selection in out-migration is performed using a new duration version of the Heckman correction and taking into account both return migration and moves to other destinations. Internal migrants experience only minor wage differences when compared with stayers. By contrast, foreign immigrants earn about 8% less than stayers and internal migrants at the beginning of their careers, and the wage gap increases over time. Both language distance and job segmentation contribute to immigrants’ lack of wage assimilation.

This paper shows that countries with high levels of "elitism" in higher-education are the countries displaying high levels of inequality. In other words, a higher level of "elitism", i.e., large gap in quality of universities, and tight selection in top universities leads to a wider gap in wages between the tradable and service sectors, which leads also to a higher Gini index. This paper shows that the Nordic countries display lower elitism in higher education as well as lower inequality than most of the other OECD countries.

Çalışanların ücretlerinin tespitinde etkili olan faktörlerin belirlenmesi amacıyla, Bursa'da 2000 kişiye anket uygulanmıştır. Bu bağlamda imalat sektörünün alt sektörlerinden; Gıda Ürünleri ve İçecek Ürünleri İmalatı, Tekstil Ürünleri İmalatı, Plastik ve Kauçuk Ürünleri İmalatı, Ana Metal Sanayi, Motorlu Kara Taşıtı, Treyler ve Yarı Treyler İmalatı ve Mobilya Ürünleri İmalatı sektörleri için çalışanların ücret düzeyini etkileyen faktörler araştırılmıştır. İfade edilen sektörler oranlı örnekleme ile her bir sektörün Bursa sanayisi içerisindeki payına karşılık gelecek şekilde oranlanarak çalışan sayıları belirlenmiştir. Her bir sektör için ilk olarak, cinsiyet ayrımı yapılmadan daha sonra ise kadın ve erkekler için ayrı ayrı İnsan Sermayesi Modeli (Mincer Model) çerçevesinde ücret modelleri tahmin edilmiştir. Çalışanların ücret düzeyini belirlemek amacıyla, eğitim, deneyim, ehliyet, yaş, yabancı dil bilgisi, ofis programları bilgisi ve medeni durum değişkenleri modelde yer almaktadır.Genel olarak modellerde kullanılan bağımsız değişkenlerin anlamlılığı sektörden sektöre ve cinsiyete göre farklılık göstermektedir. Erkek çalışanlar kadın çalışanlara göre daha yüksek ücret düzeyi elde etmektedirler. Bağımsız değişkenler dikkate alındığında ise, çalışanların aldıkları ücret düzeyi üzerinde, eğitim, deneyim, ehliyet ve yabancı dil bilgisi önemli ücret belirleyicileri olarak ön plandadır. Dolayısıyla bu tez çalışmasında çalışanların elde ettikleri ücret düzeyi sektörden sektöre ve cinsiyete göre farklılaştığı ortaya koyulmuştur. Tezin sonuç kısmında ise incelenen sektörlerde ücret düzeyinin değişkenliğini belirleyen faktörler belirlenmiştir ve çalışanlarda aranan özellikler ortaya koyulmuştur. In order to determine the factors that are effective in determining the wages of employees, a questionnaire was applied to 2000 people in Bursa. In this context, the sub-sectors of the manufacturing sector; The factors which are affecting the wage level of the employees were searched for Food Products and Beverages Manufacturing, Textile Products Manufacturing, Plastics and Rubber Products Manufacturing, Main Metal Industry, Motor Land Vehicles, Trailer and Semi-Trailer Production and Furniture Products Manufacturing sectors. The number of employees was determined by proportional sampling and the ratio of each sector to the proportion of Bursa in the industry. Firstly, for the each sector, wage models were estimated in the context of Human Capital Model (Mincer Model) without gender discrimination and later on seperatly for women and men. In order to determine the wage level of the employees, training, experience, qualification, age, foreign language knowledge, office program knowledge and marital status variables are included in the model.In general, the significance of the independent variables used in the models varies from sector to sector and gender. Male employees earn higher wages than female employees. When independent variables are considered, education, experience, competence and knowledge of foreign languages are the main determinants of the wage level of the employees. Therefore, this study shown that the wage level of the employees varies in accordance with sector to sector and gender. In the conclusion part of the thesis, The factors which are specify wage level discrimination are examined and the wanted characteristic are reveled. 208

Bu çalışmada tek bir nokta tahmini yapan yöntemlere alternatif olarak bağımlı değişkenin, bağımsız değişkene göre koşullu dağılımının tümü hakkındaki bilgiyi farklı dilimler aracılığıyla veren `dilim regresyon yöntemi` ile eğitimin ücret getirisi ve cinsiyete dayalı ücret ayrımcılığı TÜİK tarafından yayınlanan 2014 yılı Hanehalkı Bütçe Anketi mikro veri seti kullanılarak incelenmektedir. İşgücü piyasası ülkelerin gelişmişlik seviyesi açısından önemli olduğu için literatürde ücret eşitsizliği, ücret ayrımcılığı ve ücreti etkileyen faktörler araştırmalara sıklıkla konu olmaktadır. Ücreti etkileyen en önemli unsur ve piyasada oluşacak ücret farklılıklarını açıklayan temel faktör literatürde eğitim olarak gösterilmektedir. Türkiye'de eğitimin ücret üzerindeki getirisinin dilim regresyon ile incelendiği bu çalışmada, eğitimin ücret üzerindeki getirisi dağılım boyunca azalmaktadır. Machado-Mata Ayrıştırmasına göre kadın ve erkekler arasındaki ücret farkının büyük bir bölümünün cinsiyete dayalı ve oldukça az bir bölümünün modeldeki bağımsız değişkenlere bağlı olduğu ulaşılan sonuçlar arasındadır. Bunların yanında bu çalışmada, dilim regresyon sorunlarından biri olan dilim eğrilerinin kesişmesi sorunu Chernozhukov, Fernández-Val ve Galichon Dönüştürmesi kullanılarak giderilmektedir. This research focuses on the return on education and gender based wage discrimination by employing `the quantile regression method` which provides information about all conditional distributions of the dependent variable with respect to independent variable, as an alternative to single point estimation methods by using micro data set of 2014 Household Budget Survey, published by TurkStat. Since labour market isa key aspect of the development level of countries, wage inequality, wage discrimination and the factors that affect the wages have been studied extensively within the literature. Existing reseach has shown that the education level is the most important factor that affects the wages, as well as it is the the main factor that explains the wage differentials in the labour market. This study analysis the return of education on wages in Turkey and concludes that the return on education is declining through the entire wage distribution. According to Machado-Mata Decomposition results, a major part of the wage differentials between females and males depends on gender whereas a very minor part of the wage differentials depends on the independent variables in the model. In addition, this study adresses the problem of quantile crossing -as one of the quantile regression problems- by using Chernozhukov, Fernández-Val and Galichon Transformation. 144

Bu çalışma ile Türk Bankacılık sektöründe alınan ücret ve komisyonların varsa farklılıklarının tespiti, analizinin yapılması, makul seviyede alınıp alınmadığının araştırılması, tüketiciye olumlu ve olumsuz etkileri üzerinde durulmuş ve tüketiciler tarafından nasıl değerlendirildiği analiz edilmiştir. Ayrıca, artan rekabet, küreselleşme, ürün çeşitliliğinin artması ve faizlerin ülkemizde kademeli olarak düşüş eğilimine girmesi nedeniyle bankaların kar paylarını artırmak amacıyla özellikle operasyönel kısımlarında farklı ücret ve komisyon alıp almadıklarının araştırılması. Ülkemizdeki bankaların, bankacılık hizmeti ifa ederken, bankacılık kuruluş ilkelerinden olan eşitlik, tarafsızlık ve hakkaniyet ilkeleri çerçevesinde görev yapıp yapmadıkları konuları, araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca bu çalışmada ile daha gerçekçi ve nesnel bulgulara ulaşmak için Türk Bankacılık sistemiyle ilgili bankacılık ve finans müşterilerine çoktan seçmeli 30 soruluk bir anket çalışması yapılmış olup anketin daha nesnel ve objektif olması için anket farklı meslek ve yaş guruplarına uygulanmıştır. Anket, toplam yüz deneğe yüz yüze yöntemiyle uygulanmış olup anket sonuçları ve anketin yorumlanması dördüncü bölümde ayrıntılı olarak anlatılmıştır. Anket çalışmasının yapılmasının diğer bir amacı da, Türk Bankacılık sektöründe müşterilere uygulanan ücret komisyon ve masrafların müşteriler nezninde nasıl yorumlandıkları ölçmektir. Ayrıca ankette katılan kadın ve erkek katılımcıların Türk Bankacılık sektörüyle ilgili görüşlerini yansıtan Ki-Kare testi ve sonuçları, katılımcıların bankacılık ile ilgili görüşlerinin eğitim durumlarıyla ilgili anlamlı farklılık olup olmadığı konularının sayısal yüzdelerine göre analiz edilmesini içermektedir. Son olarak, bankacılık ücret ve komisyonlarından memnun olmayan bankacılık ve finans müşterileri için öneriler ve genel sonuç kısmından oluşmaktadır. In this study, the differences, if any, between fees and commissions in the Turkish banking sector, whether or not they are at a reasonable rate, and their positive and negative effects on customers were investigated, and an analysis of customers' assessment was performed. The study also looks at whether banks charge different fees and commissions, especially in operational units, in an effort to increase their profit share due to the increasing competition in the market, globalization, the expanding product range and the gradual downward trend witnessed in interest rates. Whether the banks in our country operate within the framework of equality, objectivity and fairness, the principles upon which they were established, is also analyzed. Moreover, this study contains a survey study of banking and finance customers that is based on the results of a questionnaire containing 30 multiple choice questions related to the Turkish banking system, with the objective of gathering more realistic and objective findings. People of different occupations and age groups were included in the survey, for it to be more objective. The survey, which is explained in detail in the fourth section, was conducted face-to-face with a total of 100 participants. Another objective of the survey study is to evaluate how customers interpret the fees, commissions and costs charged in the Turkish banking sector. In addition, this study also includes the results of a chi-square test that reflects the opinions of the female and male participants interviewed for the survey on the Turkish banking sector, and an analysis of whether meaningful differences exist between the participants' educational statuses and their opinions, based on numerical percentages. Lastly, the study makes some suggestions for banking and finance customers who are not content with the fees and commissions charged in banking, and includes a general conclusion section. 146

Yapılan bu çalışmada iktisat yazının en önemli sorunlarından gelir ve servet dağılımı ele alınmıştır. Bu amaçla ilk başta iktisat okullarının dağılıma bakış açısı irdelenmiştir. Ayrıca gelir dağılımı ölçüm yöntemlerinin neler olduğu açıklanmıştır. Daha sonra gelir dağılımına etki eden ve gelir dağılımından etkilenen faktörler teorik olarak ele alınmıştır. Çalışmada 1987-2014 yılları arasındaki verilerle Türkiye'nin de dahil olduğu bazı OECD ülkelerinde gelir dağılımını etkileyen faktörler analiz edilmiştir. Analiz sonucunda ekonomik küreselleşme, yaş, bağımlılık oranı, büyüme gibi değişkenlerin gelir dağılımını bozucu etki yaptığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Diğer taraftan ücretlerin milli gelir içindeki payının artmasıyla gelir dağılımının daha adil olduğu sonucuna varılmıştır. Çalışmada Türkiye'de gelir dağılımına ilişkin iki ayrı analiz yapılmıştır. Türkiye'de toplam gelirin %50'sinden fazlasını ücret, maaş ve yevmiye gelirleri oluşturmaktadır. Bu gerçeklik göz önüne alınarak Türkiye'de ücret eşitsizliğinin belirleyenleri analiz edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Diğer analizde ise Türkiye'de 12 alt bölge üzerinden gelir eşitsizliği ile eğitim arasındaki ilişki irdelenmiştir. Beginning with the discussion on different perspectives of economic schools of thought with respect to distribution, the study explains what methods are used for measuring income distribution. The factors affecting income distribution and affected by it are theoretically taken thereafter. In this study, the elements having impacts on income distribution in some OECD countries, including Turkey, are analysed on the basis of data between 1987 and 2014. Through this analysis, it is concluded that the variables such as economic globalization, age, dependency ratio, growth, etc. have a detrimental effect on income distribution, and that a fairer income distribution is attained as the share of wages in national income increases.As for the distribution of income in Turkey, two distinct analyses are conducted in the study. Considering the fact that more than 50% of total income in the country consists of wage and salary income, the determinants of wage inequality are analysed in the first place. As to the second analysis, the correlation between income inequality and education is discussed in terms of 12 subregions. The purpose of this study is to enhance the understanding of the dynamics of income distribution in Turkey and some other OECD countries. While labor-intensive export-oriented industries typically bring positive economic benefits to countries through employment generation, the effects of these industries on various aspects of workers’ welfare have not been formally studied very well. This paper considers the case of the cut flower industry in Ethiopia to provide such quantitative evidences. Based on the propensity-score matching and doubly robust estimations to facilitate rigorous comparisons, we find that production workers in the cut flower sector earn significantly more than similar workers in other sectors, most probably due to the flower farms’ interest to reduce costly worker turnovers. In addition, the cut flower industry workers save more regularly than workers in other sectors who have similar characteristics, and the amount saved relative to the income level is also higher, after controlling for the frequency of wage payment and employment status. The subjective valuation of their jobs is also higher in the cut flower sector, particularly in terms of the income level, stability, and future prospect, but they are not necessarily more satisfied with the type of work they do. Risk-averse individuals are more satisfied in the cut flower sector and age is rewarded more, while work experience and math skills tend to reduce satisfaction levels more in the sector at this level of unskilled production workers.

El proceso de selección de empleados realizado dentro de una empresa puede estar sujeto a fallas teniendo en cuenta que la información con la que cuentan los empleadores es limitada, esto debido a que una hoja de vida no muestra de manera perfecta el nivel de productividad de un candidato y por ello los empleadores pueden tomar decisiones sesgadas basándose en características no relevantes para la productividad generando beneficios o penalizaciones injustificadas con los empleados. Esta investigación estudia el efecto del nivel de atractivo físico y de confianza de posibles empleados en la percepción de productividad que tienen los empleadores al realizar una estimación del rendimiento que tendrán sobre una tarea para la cual su desarrollo no depende del nivel de atractivo físico del aplicante. Mediante un experimento de laboratorio se modifica la forma de mostrar la información en hojas de vida; con ello se encuentra un resultado diferente al de la literatura relacionada: Un mayor nivel de atractivo físico de los empleados está relacionado de manera negativa con la percepción que ellos mismos tienen sobre su productividad y también se encuentra que los empleadores perciben como menos productivos a los empleados cuando estos son más atractivos. The selection process of employees performed into an enterprise can be subject to failures taken into account that the information contained in a curriculum is limited and not reveals the employee’s exact level of productivity, this could make the employers take decisions based on not relevant characteristics to the productivity generating unjustified premiums or penalties to the employees. This research studies the effect of the employee’s physical attractiveness and the confidence on the productivity perception when the employers make an estimation of the performance about a task not related to physical allure. Through a laboratory experiment the information contained in a curriculum is modified, the outcome is opposite to the findings on previous literature. When the employees have a higher level of physical attractiveness they have less confidence on his own productivity and the employers perceived them as less productive. Magíster en Economía Maestría

The goal of this study is to investigate the wage differential between groups of workers who are exposed to heat and those who are not. Workers in the heat-exposure risk group are defined as workers who work in conditions that cause them to spend more than 25% of their work hours at high temperatures. To analyze the wage differential, the Blinder-Oaxaca and Juhn-Murphy-Pierce methods were applied to Korea Working Condition Survey data. The results show that the no heat-exposure risk group received higher wages. In most cases, this can be interpreted as the endowment effect of human capital. As a price effect that lowers the endowment effect, the compensating differential for the heat-exposure risk group was found to be 1%. Moreover, education level, work experience, and employment status counteracted the compensating differentials for heat-exposure risks. A comparison of data sets from 2011 and 2014 shows that the increasing wage gap between the two groups was not caused by systematic social discrimination factors. This study suggests that wage differential factors can be modified for thermal environmental risks that will change working conditions as the impact of climate change increases.
