Abstract

The coexistence of two different types of benign cartilaginous tumours of bone in the same patient has not been reported in literature. We report a case in which a sixteen-year-old male had a benign chondroblastoma of the proximal left humerus and an osteochondroma of the distal left femur. Both originated at the same time and had a progressive increase in size with growth.

Abstract

The III-VI compound semiconductors is important for the fabrication of ionizing radiation detectors, solid-state electrodes, and photosensitive heterostructures, solar cell and ionic batteries. In this paper, In2Se2.7 Sb0.3 single crystals were grown by the Bridgman method with temperature gradient of 60 °C/cm and the growth velocity 0.5cm/hr. The as-grown crystals were examined under the optical microscope for surface study, a various growth features observed on top free surface of the single crystal which is predominant of layers growth mechanism. The lattice parameters of as-grown crystal was determined by the XRD analysis. A Vickers' projection microscope were used for the study of microhardness on the ascleaved, cold-worked and annealed samples of the crystals, the results were discussed, and reported in detail. 253. Equity in community health insurance schemes: evidence and lessons from Armenia

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Community health insurance (CHI) schemes are growing in importance in low-income settings, where health systems based on user fees have resulted in significant barriers to care for the poorest members of communities. They increase revenue, access and financial protection, but concerns have been expressed about the equity of such schemes and their ability to reach the poorest. Few programmes routinely evaluate equity impacts, even though this is usually a key objective. This lack of evidence is related to the difficulties in collecting reliable data on utilization and socio-economic status. This paper describes the findings of an evaluation of the equity of Oxfam's CHI schemes in rural Armenia. METHODS: Members of a random sample of 506 households in villages operating insurance schemes in rural Armenia were interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Household wealth scores based on ownership of assets were generated using principal components analysis. Logistic and Poisson regression analyses were performed to identify the determinants of health facility utilization, and equity of access across socio-economic strata. RESULTS: The schemes have achieved a high level of equity, according to socio-economic status, age and gender. However, although levels of participation compare favourably with international experience, they remain relatively low due to a lack of affordability and a package of primary care that does not include coverage for chronic disease. CONCLUSION: This paper demonstrates that the distribution of benefits among members of this community-financing scheme is equitable, and that such a degree of equity in community insurance can be achieved in such settings, possibly through an emphasis on accountability and local management. Such a scheme presents a workable model for investing in primary health care in resource-poor settings.

Abstract

Satellite remote sensing technology is increasingly gaining recognition as an important source of operational agro meteorological services. Spatial daily rainfall product from geostationary satellite is one of the important data source for quick evaluation of suitability of sowing conditions and other economically relevant agricultural operations (irrigation, fertilizer applications, spraying etc.) by farmers as well as disaster (drought, flood) warning causing crop loss and also to derive weather derivatives for crop insurance. In view of that a study was taken up to explore the use of satellite based rainfall data at different temporal scales. Under the present study, comparison has been made between Kalpana-1 high resolution (0.25° x 0.25°) rainfall estimates for four south-west monsoon months (June-September) in two contrasting monsoon periods of 2008 (normal) and 2009 (drought) with in situ measurements and forecast (1° x 1°) at nine AMFUs (Agro-Meteorological Field Units) in different agro climatic zones. Initial analysis show less correlation and large root mean square error (RMSE) of Kalpana-1 daily rainfall estimates with measurements and forecast. However, correlation was found to increase significantly from 60 to 80% over weekly to fortnightly scale with concomitant decrease in RMSE. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cell loss confined mostly to dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra. Several factors, including oxidative stress, and decreased activity of complex 1 mitochondrial respiratory chain, are involved in the degenerative process. Yet, the underlying mechanisms leading to dopaminergic cell loss remain elusive. Morphological assessrnent for different modes of cell death: apoptosis, necrosis or autophagic degeneration, can contribute significantly to the understanding of this neurona1 loss. Ultrastructural examination revealed characteristics of apoptosis and autophagic degeneration in melanized neurons of the substantia nigra in PD patients. The results suggest that even at the final stage of the disease, the dopaminergic neurons are undergoing active process of cell death.
