Abstract

Objective: The clinical teaching of psychiatry to medical students throughout the COVID-19 pandemic has presented opportunities for support, engagement and learning above and beyond usual practice. Like other teaching faculties, we needed to quickly adapt the course material to an online platform. However, for psychiatric teaching, it was also essential to find alternatives to patient interviewing, and to provide support and containment in uncertain times. We aim to describe our philosophical stance and framework for the delivery of our online course.Conclusions: Key components in the delivery of our modified course were the transition to online learning and assessment, developing a suite of surrogate clinical learning experiences, using simulated patients for online interviewing, and attention to student well-being whilst providing a supportive and contained environment for student learning. Supportive leadership and good communication assisted the teaching staff to deliver the course during COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

General practitioners can help patients with symptoms of stress when they take time to listen and develop a treatment strategy. Stress responses are highly individual, and can result in physical and psychological symptoms following major, minor, and ongoing life events. A physician should consider the unique manifestations of stress in each patient, listening to complaints and discussing the patient's perceptions. Stress management may include deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, biofeedback, as well as cognitive therapy and changes in lifestyle that might reduce symptoms.

Abstract

The Game On series of curated annual public exhibitions and events is focused on a place-based community of practice (the Brisbane game developer community) with the overall intent of developing what anthropologist Victor Turner (1969) has termed ‘communitas’ – an unstructured community where all members are considered equal contributors and participants. The project began in 2006 at a time when the Australian games industry was evolving away from the traditional model of large hierarchic companies, toward a more creative entrepreneurial model of small teams adaptive to the needs of the project and supportive of each other. In 2008, the GFC resulted in the disappearance of larger companies from the Australian game development landscape, leaving smaller ‘indie’ developers with both room to develop but also major challenges. A strong community and sense of communitas was considered vital to the survival of the sector. The Game On program of events was designed to facilitate an acknowledged need for mutual support and communitas. The shape of the games industry has changed, however, the need for communitas is still evident. The community has grown and diversified, the scale of the Game On events has grown. Success is evident in the continued growth and support of the community, particularly the emerging mix of community members in a communitas relationship with each other centered in place. The emergence of communitas is encouraging as a model for curatorial practice in similar community contexts. The results are good evidence for a case of best practice in other situations.

279. Odin Teatret’s The Tree: performing in the interstices

Abstract

This article aims to critically engage with Odin Teatret’s most recent addition to the repertoire, The Tree (2016), in order to investigate the ways in which Barba’s dramaturgical decision-making processes create a performance field that metaphorically comments on the status of the group today whilst critiquing contemporary geo-politics. Importantly, we argue that notions of interculturalism - which have often been employed by scholars to critique the Odin’s work - do not address the full complexity of the embodied concatenation of the group’s practice, and we employ the term interstitial to more effectively articulate the complex space produced by the group’s training and performances.

280. 'The Dance of Opposition: Repetition, Legacy and Difference in Third Theatre Training’.

Abstract

This chapter will demonstrate that Third Theatre communities continue to celebrate and offer a ‘time’ and ‘place’ - a way of being together - to diverse, foreign and unruly theatre practices. From the 1970s to the present day, Third Theatre has refined itself as a multifarious, transnational entity, comprised of groups and solo artists across the world (but primarily in Europe and Latin America) making theatre in a laboratory environment in which training is generally an essential aspect of the practice. Many of these artists are border-crossers, working with colleagues from an array of different countries and backgrounds, often gathering periodically in order to reaffirm a collective identity and replenish themselves artistically. It will draw on Delueze’s Three syntheses of time: the living present; the pure past; and the drive to the future as a means of situating three different practitioners and their modes of training. Methodologically, the chapter will be informed by case studies drawn from the Third Theatre community. The training developed by three Third Theatre performers affiliated to Nordiskteaterlaboritorium (NTL) will be explored. These artists are: Luis Alonso, an Afro-Cuban practitioner and member of Oco Teatro Laboratorio- as well as a member of Bridge of Winds – here the first synthesis will be employed: the difference underpinning habits in the “living present” actively (re)-determines processes in the past and the future by synthesising them in novel ways in the here and now. Carolina Pizaro, a freelance Chilean performance, who has trained in India, developed her own particular performer style and dynamic and currently trains and performs with Odin Teatret. Abstract

Purpose: A randomised controlled trial was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse-delivered Head and Neck Cancer Survivor Self-Management Care Plan (HNCP) for patients who had completed treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC). Methods: Ten oncology nurses were trained to deliver the HNCP. The HNCP consisted of one face-to-face hour-long meeting in which the patient’s treatment was recorded, as were contact details of health professionals involved in their care and follow-up schedules. Patients were guided to nominate up to three goals for their future well-being and assisted to devise an action plan to achieve these. The HNCP was given to the patient and a copy was forwarded to their primary care physician. One hundred and nine patients were randomised after definitive curative intent treatment, 36 to HNCP, 36 to receive information about survivorship, and 37 to usual care. The primary outcome, analysed by intention-to-treat, was change in quality of life measured by the FACT-H&N from baseline to 6-month follow-up. Results: Quality of life of all groups decreased at 3 months but was close to baseline at 6 months. Compared with the usual care group, the only statistically significant mean difference at 6 months was for the information group on the physical well-being domain (mean difference 0.4, 95% − 1.8, 2.6, p < 0.05). Conclusions: A single-session nurse-delivered intervention is insufficient to improve the quality of life in HNC survivors compared with usual care. Provision of detailed written information about HNC survivorship is associated with improved physical well-being. Trial registration: ACTRN12613000542796.

297. Supporting Cancer Survivors Following Treatment for Non-Hodgkin's and Hodgkin's Lymphoma: A Pilot Study Assessing the Feasibility and Process Outcomes of a Nurse-Led Intervention.

Abstract

Lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer in Australia and comprises 2.8% of worldwide cancer diagnoses. Research targeting development and evaluation of post-treatment care for debilitating complications resulting from the disease and its treatment is limited. This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a nurse-led survivorship intervention, post-treatment in Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survivors. A single-center, prospective, 3-arm, pilot, randomized controlled, parallel-group trial was used. People with lymphoma were recruited and randomized to the intervention (ENGAGE), education booklet only, or usual care arm. Participants receiving ENGAGE received an educational booklet and were offered 3 consultations (via various modes) with a cancer nurse to develop a survivorship care plan and healthcare goals. Participant distress and intervention acceptability was measured at baseline and 12-wk. Acceptability was measured via a satisfaction survey using a 11-point scale. Feasibility was measured using participation, retention rates, and process outcomes. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Thirty-four participants with HL and NHL were recruited to the study (11 = intervention, 11 = information only, 12 = usual care). Twenty-seven participants (79%) completed all time points from baseline to 12 wk. Seven (88%) of the 8 participants receiving ENGAGE completed all consultations using various modes to communicate with the nurse (videoconference 14/23, 61%; phone 5/23, 22%; face-to-face 4/23, 17%). Participants who completed the intervention were highly satisfied with ENGAGE. The ENGAGE intervention is feasible and highly acceptable for lymphoma survivors. Abstract

We report on an early design concept that focuses on how we en-gage with our contemporary urban environments along with ani-mal companions. The project recognises that dogs and dog walking both contribute to mental and physical health and well-being, and builds on a growing awareness that companion animals and walking in urban localities also fosters community cohesion and social capital. We put these themes together in the context of de-signing for Queeland’s growing senior population with the in-tent of gaining insights into connections made through place-making activities of human and animal companions. The project is currently in its exploratory design phase as ‘grounded’ practice-based work with on-going emerging insights to underpin the development of a design scenario and cultural probe. We begin with insights generated from personal experienc-es and a desire to foster age-friendly, intergenerational ‘slow’ urban environments. This paper offers the background and context, and then considers some of the design dilemmas. We share an early design concept that draws on lessons learned from game design and theories of place-making that has the potential to reveal experience in place (for both humans and our animal companions).

Abstract

Simultaneous XMM-Newton, NuSTAR and HST observations, performed in March 2017, of the nearby ($z=0.184$) luminous quasar PDS 456 are presented. PDS 456 had a low X-ray flux compared to past observations, where the first of the two new XMM-Newton observations occurred during a pronounced dip in the X-ray lightcurve. The broad-band X-ray spectrum is highly absorbed, attenuated by a soft X-ray absorber of column density $N_{\rm H}=6\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. An increase in obscuration occurs during the dip, which may be due to an X-ray eclipse. In addition, the persistent, fast Fe K outflow is present, with velocity components of $-0.25c$ and $-0.4c$. The soft absorber is less ionized ($\log\xi=3$) compared to the iron K outflow ($\log\xi=5$) and is outflowing with a velocity of approximately $-0.2c$. A soft X-ray excess is present below 1 keV against the highly absorbed continuum and can be attributed to the re-emission from a wide angle wind. The complex X-ray absorption present in PDS 456 suggests that the wind is inhomogeneous, whereby the soft X-ray absorber originates from denser clumps or filaments which may form further out along the outflow. In contrast to the X-ray observations, the simultaneous UV spectrum of PDS 456 is largely unabsorbed, where only a very weak broad absorption trough is present bluewards of Ly$\alpha$, compared to a past observation in 2000 when the trough was significantly stronger. The relative weakness of the UV absorption may be due to the soft X-ray absorber being too highly ionized and almost transparent in the UV band., Comment: 17 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

The 2018 Game On (GO423) Festival is the seventh time for the event, and the third year of partnership with The Brisbane Powerhouse. The Game On program and the Game On Festival supports sector building and sustainability of the local game making industry through strengthening community networks and fostering recognition of our local game making industry. GO423 is a festival focused on Queensland practitioners and community – from leaders in the field to emerging professionals and students (High School and tertiary level). With a program of presentations, debates, discussions, and exhibition around interactive screen culture and practice, GO423 promotes an understanding of the Queensland and Australian screen production industry within a broad global context. Evidence of the value of the event is perhaps best underscored in terms of Screen Queensland funding which supported the 2018 festival and the continued support of The Brisbane Powerhouse.
