The present research consists of studying the characterization and treatment of the olive mill wastewater (OMWW) resulting from the olive industries of the region of Loukkos, Morocco. According to the national plan for green Morocco, the annual volumes of OMWW discharges increase with the expansion of the areas of olive plantations compared to agricultural activities. The study of the organic, mineral, and microbiological composition of the obtained OMWW showed that they are rich in microbiological (FMAT, Let M., and B.L.), mineral (total Kjeldhal nitrogen, orthophosphate, total phosphorus, sodium, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, zinc, manganese, and lead ions), and organic (COD, BOD5, and polyphenols) micropollutants with very high percentages that are higher than the standards in force. The treatment used in this study is the combined process of aerated lagooning/adsorption using powdered activated carbon after optimization of the experimental parameters (mass concentration of activated carbon (AC) and agitation rapidity (Ar)) by experiment design method. The obtained physicochemical parameters, such as pH, total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), rate of discoloration, and polyphenol content of raw OMWW, were 4.87, 0.63, 80.3, 0.8, and 1.45 g/l, respectively. The results of these parameters for the treated OMWW were obtained in the order of 6.10, 0.22, 28, 0.28, and 0.44 g/l for pH, TSS, COD, discoloration rate, and polyphenol content, respectively. These results show that the proposed treatment significantly reduced acidity, TSS, COD, discoloration rate, and polyphenol contents, with a performance of about 25.26, 65, 65.13, 65, and 69.65%, respectively. River pollution resulting from unregulated and improper water sewage management is a global issue of concern. The discharge of inadequately treated sewage into rivers and the sudden release of excessive quantities during heavy rainfall can result in significant fish mortality. This phenomenon has been observed repeatedly in the case of the Sąpólna River, NW Poland. Consequently, a decision was made to monitor the water quality at two key locations: the drainage channel that feeds into the river and downstream of the channel. Seventeen water quality indicators were measured, including temperature, pH, conductivity, total suspended solids (TSS), dissolved oxygen (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), total organic carbon (TOC), alkalinity, total hardness, total reactive phosphorus (TRP), total phosphorus (TP), nitrite-nitrogen (NO2−-N), nitrate-nitrogen (NO3−-N), total ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N), total organic nitrogen (TON), and total nitrogen (TN). It was determined that, at the location farthest from the drainage channel, water quality still falls short of meeting the specified standards. The primary factors leading to the degradation of water quality at this point were TSS, TRP, NO2−-N, and TN. It was concluded that the primary localized source of water pollution in the studied section of the Sąpólna River is the discharge from sewage treatment plants in Nowogard. Water transparency is widely used in environmental monitoring programs and in assessing water quality in aquatic environments. The purpose of this study was to determine which of two water transparency-measuring tools, a Secchi disk or a water turbidity meter, is better to assess environments in shallow eutrophic waters. Measurements of the Secchi disk depth (Dsd) and water turbidity (Turb) were carried out simultaneously at eight stations of the hypereutrophic Sestroretsky Razliv reservoir in 2015–2018. In May, October, and December, Dsd varied around 0.6 m but was significantly lower in August during algal blooms. Turbidity ranged from 10 to 20 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) in different seasons but increased to almost 70 NTU in August. Principal component analysis revealed that Dsd was inversely proportional to Turb, total suspended solids, and chlorophyll concentrations. The data showed that at turbidities below 20 NTU, the Secchi disk clearly distinguishes differences in water transparency, but when Turb exceeds 40 NTU, measuring transparency using the Secchi disk no longer allows for water differentiation. In this case, it is preferable to use water turbidity measurements, which remain an effective indicator even in highly turbid waters. Coastal marsh survival relies on the ability to increase elevation and offset sea level rise. It is therefore important to realistically model sediment fluxes between marshes, tidal channels, and bays as sediment availability controls accretion. Traditionally, numerical models have been calibrated and validated using in situ measurements at a few locations within the domain of interest. These datasets typically provide temporal information but lack spatial variability. This paper explores the potential of coupling numerical models with high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Products from three sensors from the NASA Delta-X airborne mission are used. Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR) provides vertical water level change on the marshland and was used to adjust the bathymetry and calibrate water fluxes over the marsh. AirSWOT yields water surface elevation within bays, lakes, and channels, and was used to calibrate the Chezy bottom friction coefficient. Finally, imagery from AVIRIS-NG provides maps of total suspended solids (TSS) concentration that were used to calibrate sediment parameters of settling velocity and critical shear stress for erosion. Three numerical models were developed at different locations along coastal Louisiana using Delft3D. The coupling enabled a spatial evaluation of model performance that was not possible using simple point measurements. Increasing population growth with high socio-economic development has changed the world landscape. These advancements have resulted to the water quality degradation and inadequate management of solid waste. In addressing these critical issues, a robust water treatment technology is required. Activated carbon (AC) in enhancing the wastewater effluent quality has proven to be a promising and sustainable solution. AC from sugarcane bagasse (SCB), empty fruit bunch (EFB), and rice husk (RH) have been identified as abundant bioresources in Malaysia. These materials possess unique compositions and potential for reuse. The production of AC involves both physical activation through a carbonization process at 600°C and chemical activation through impregnation with ZnCl2 . In the study, samples from wastewater effluent were collected and analyzed for several parameters, including total suspended solids (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia-nitrogen, nitrite-nitrogen, and nitrate-nitrogen. The samples have undergone treatment using activated carbon with various ratios. Here, the removal efficiency of pollutants was determined before and after the batch experiment. It can be denoted that AC, composed of SCB:EFB:RH in a ratio of 1.5:1:1, demonstrated an outstanding performance with an average percentage removal of 97%. A detailed analysis of the physicochemical characteristics of the AC was conducted. The output revealed significant surface modifications and alterations in the functional groups of the AC due to the adsorption process. These findings set a remarkable implication for tertiary treatment in enhancing the quality of effluent and provides valuable insight into implementing sustainable practices in wastewater treatment operations. The problem of recovering water from treated wastewater may concern an increasing number of countries, especially those with low water resources. After costly treatment processes, water taken from surface and underground intakes is used and then largely discharged to receivers in the form of treated wastewater. Advanced wastewater treatment methods ensure that the treated wastewater is characterized by very low physical and chemical pollution, sometimes better than the water quality in the receiving basin. The research was conducted under a cooperation agreement between Bialystok University of Technology and Bialystok Waterworks Ltd. The recovery of water from wastewater was one of the topics pursued. This paper analyzes the parameters of treated wastewater from the largest municipal wastewater treatment plant in the Podlaskie Province. The analysis of the treated wastewater composition was based on monitoring studies conducted by the company Bialystok Waterworks Ltd. between 2020 and 2023. The analysis concerned the basic parameters of wastewater, namely the content of organic matter and total suspended solids. This was due to the requirements for the recyclability of treated wastewater. Linear modeling was performed to determine if a sufficiently strong correlation was detected;otherwise output distribution characteristics were provided.In all cases, the output concentrations were far below the class A limits for irrigation in the whole research period. This study assessed the effectiveness of integrating electrocoagulation, magnetic fields, and ozonation technologies to remove chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total suspended solids (TSS) from tannery wastewater. Furthermore, the effects of their key operating factors were determined. To achieve this goal, an electrocoagulation reactor coupled with a magnetic-field generator was used and the response surface methodology was applied through a Box-Behnken experimental design. Here, current intensity (I), treatment time (T), and ozone concentration (O3) are considered the influencing factors. Likewise, the removal percentages of COD and TSS serve as response indicators. The results indicate that T, I, and O3 are significant for the removal of COD and TSS at a confidence level of p-value < 0.05. For COD, the optimal operating conditions are I = 6.8 A, T = 30 min, and O3 = 10 mg/l; and for TSS, the optimal conditions are I = 5.72 A, T = 28 min, and O3 = 7.8 mg/l. These conditions yield removal efficiencies of 41.8% for COD and 97.9% for TSS. The present study aimed to assess the impact of leachates from the emerging cell on the water quality of the Limón stream in Ecuador. Five sampling points were selected as references using the NTE INEN 2176:2013 standard. Subsequently, these samples were analyzed in a laboratory using the standard methods for the examination of water and wastewater for the respective physicochemical analysis. The analysis results were compared with the Unified Text of Secondary Legislation of the Ministry of the Environment, and the water quality index (WQI) was determined according to the National Sanitary Foundation (NSF). Additionally, an environmental diagnosis was conducted based on the cause-effect matrix by Leopold to propose a strategy for the restoration and ecological recovery of the affected components. According to the obtained results, the sampling points closer to the leachate discharge showed high concentrations of dissolved oxygen, iron, fecal coliforms, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solids (TSS), which exceeded the maximum permissible limits according to legislation. This resulted in a "fair" water quality index classification according to the WQI classification. These findings highlight the importance of considering and assessing the environmental impacts. A total of 24 impacts were identified on physical, biotic, and anthropic components, with 4.76% being highly significant, 42.86% significant, and 52.38% negligible. In conclusion, the results indicate a scenario of environmental deterioration at the leachate discharge stations, urging the urgent implementation of corrective measures to address the detected high contamination. Fresh-cut kiwifruits (Actinidia spp.) are appreciated by consumers for their convenience and freshness. This study investigated the effect of different cutting styles (slice, half-slice, and quarter-slice) on physicochemical properties and antioxidant activity of kiwifruits during storage at 4 °C for four days. Results indicated that cutting styles had little influence on color, firmness, weight loss, total aerobic count, titratable acid, total suspended solids, and ascorbic acid content compared with whole kiwifruit. Moreover, the total phenolic content and DPPH radical scavenging activity significantly increased with increasing wounding intensity. In addition, fresh-cut processing induced a higher level of reactive oxygen species (ROS), resulting in elevated malondialdehyde content, electrolyte leakage, and increased activities of superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase. These findings suggest that cutting styles did not exhibit much adverse effect on the organoleptic quality, but significantly induced the biosynthesis of phenolics and improved the antioxidant activity of fresh-cut kiwifruit. The study was conducted to evaluate the physico-chemical characteristics of Veraval harbour water for six month. Water quality characteristics of three stations of harbour was calculated in two seasons, viz; post monsoon and pre monsoon. The purpose of study was to measure the level of water pollution in the harbour. The results of the study showed that water temperature ranged between 25.14°C to 31.56°C, pH 7.32 to 8.11, Electrical Conductivity 43.02 to 63.60 ms/cm, Salinity 25.10 to 38.62 ppt, Turbidity 52.39 to 66.54 NTU, Odour varies as disagreeable, fishy and rotten egg, Dissolved Oxygen 0.44 to 3.09 mg/L, Biochemical Oxygen Demand 0.32 to 2.93 mg/L, Total Suspended Solids 26.87 to 48.67 mg/L, Total Dissolved Solids 36.40 to 68.87 mg/mL. The study revealed that the harbour water was slight to moderate polluted and it might be due to the excess industrial discharge and domestic wastewater runoff and running processing units to the harbour area of Veraval. The study investigates the effectiveness of Ferric Chloride as a coagulant for removing pollutants from domestic wastewater in El Jadida, Morocco. It analyzes various parameters, including Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), pH levels, and heavy metals. The study combines conventional methods with impedance spectroscopy to monitor the process, and an equivalent circuit model is developed to correlate theoretical factors with empirical data. The study reveals that a concentration of 1000 mg/L of Ferric Chloride is optimal for effective treatment, significantly reducing TSS, BOD, and COD levels. However, higher concentrations show diminishing returns. The study also highlights the presence of heavy metals exceeding Moroccan standards in the wastewater, emphasizing the need for proper treatment. The impedance analysis elucidates the relaxation processes associated with the coagulation reaction and the migration/agglomeration of flocs. The analysis suggests that below 1000 mg/L, more Ferric Chloride is required for effective coagulation, while above 1000 mg/L, overcoagulation may occur. The agricultural sector is one that requires and consumes enormous amounts of fresh water globally. Commercial wine production in particular uses large volumes of fresh water and, through various processes, generates significant quantities of wastewater. The wastewater produced by wineries typically exhibits elevated levels of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), an acidic pH, and varying salinity and nutrient contents. The overall characteristics of winery wastewater indicate that it is a potential environmental hazard if not processed and disposed of appropriately. Due to significant variations in wastewater contaminant levels among wineries, the implementation of a universally applicable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable waste management system seems practically unattainable. This study investigated the design, fabrication, and modification of a shear enhanced flotation separation (SEFS) pilot plant to be used as a primary treatment stage during winery wastewater processing. This technology combines the synergistic advantages of hydrodynamic shear, coagulation, flocculation, and dissolved air flotation. To date, there have been only limited publications on the feasibility and application of hydrodynamic shear and its potential to assist with coagulation/flocculation and flotation efficiencies specifically for winery wastewater treatment. The results obtained indicate that the SEFS pilot plant may well be able to process winery wastewater to a quality level where reuse of the water for irrigation of crops may be considered. Sub-Saharan Africa faces a number of essential issues, including water quality. As such, evaluating the surface water quality of lakes and reservoirs is a crucial part of environmental monitoring and management. Especially in a region where these water bodies serve as a source of livelihood for communities living around them. Water quality parameters (WQPs) are usually taken from the site and sent to the laboratory for measurement and analysis. However, this traditional method is time-consuming, costly, and labor-intensive. Combining geographic information system and remote sensing (RS) allows researchers to analyze WQPs more conveniently. This study, therefore, used RS technology to map and estimate WQPs and correlated it with in-situ measurement. Using the empirical regression model and Landsat 8, WQPs such as chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity were estimated. The results from RS were correlated with the in-situ measurements of water quality. The results showed that the in-situ Chl-a levels varied from 0.206 to 13.5 mg/L, averaging 5.1 mg/L. The Chl-a values estimated from Landsat 8 had R2 of 0.883 and 0.853, respectively, for both periods (17 December 2022 and 16 March 2023). The green band (B3) was more instrumental in detecting Chl-a. The in-situ measurement for TSS ranged between 18 and 48 mg/L, with a mean value of 28.7 mg/L. These readings were low and within tolerable bounds of 50 mg/L. High TSS concentrations were found near farms and communities with a significant influx of silt into the surrounding lake. The comparison of in-situ water quality and the reflectance from satellite data showed that the turbidity estimated from the sensor from the two periods has R2 > 0.65. Brewers' spent grain (BSG), the primary by-product of the brewing industry, constitutes approximately 85.0% of the total by-products generated. BSG is known for its rich cellulose and non-cellulosic polysaccharide content, making it a valuable resource with significant potential for profitable recycling and reutilization. Given that the brewing sector is among the most substantial industrial consumers of water due to the water-intensive process of producing BSG, the effective management of wastewater in this industry is of paramount importance. This research focuses on investigating innovative wastewater management in the brewing sector. It employs the conversion of BSGs into a cellulose acetate membrane, thus enabling a physio-chemical treatment process utilizing the micro-filtration technique for wastewater treatment within the brewery industry. The results of this study demonstrate a substantial reduction in biochemical oxygen demand from the initial value of 16.65 mg/l (untreated) to 13.70 mg/l, 11.16 mg/l, 8.37 mg/l, 5.58 mg/l, and 3.14 mg/l after the first through fifth treatment cycles, respectively. Furthermore, the research indicates a high correlation with an R2 value of 0.999, affirming the viability and effectiveness of the treatment process. This is further substantiated by the results of chemical oxygen demand, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, and hydrogen ion concentration analyses presented in this study. These findings not only validate the efficacy of utilizing BSG-derived cellulose acetate membranes but also emphasize the potential for revolutionizing wastewater treatment practices within the brewing industry. This study aims to evaluate the performance of four ensemble machine learning methods, i.e., Random Committee, Discretization Regression, Reduced Error Pruning Tree, and Additive Regression, to estimate water quality parameters of Biochemical Oxygen Demand BOD and Dissolved Oxygen DO. Data from Anbar City on the Euphrates River in western Iraq was employed for the model's training and validation. The best subset regression analysis and correlation analysis were used to determine the best input combinations and to ascertain variable correlation, respectively. Besides, sensitivity analysis was employed to determine the standardized coefficient for BOD and DO predictions, hence knowing the significance of the relevant physical and chemical parameters. Results revealed that temperature, turbidity, electrical conductivity, Ca++, and chemical oxygen demand were identified as the best input combinations for BOD prediction. In contrast, the variable combination of temperature, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand, SO4−1, and total suspended solids was identified as the best input combination for DO prediction. It was also demonstrated that the random committee model was superior for predictions of BOD and DO, followed by the discretization regression model. For predicting BOD (DO), the correlation coefficient and root mean square error were 0.8176 (0.7833) and 0.3291 (0.3544), respectively, during the testing stage. The present investigation provided approaches for addressing difficulties in irrigation water quality prediction through artificial intelligence techniques and thence serve as a tool to overcome the obstacles towards better water management. The pollution indices of microplastic content in bottled water from South Eastern Nigeria were evaluated. Microplastic contamination factors, pollution load and risk index, polymer risk indices and estimated daily intake for adults and children were determined. Microplastic concentrations, types and shapes were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) – energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). From documented literature, this is the first study on microplastics in bottled water from Africa. The microplastics were found in 92% of the samples. The four types of microplastics were polyethylene (PE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) while the dominant shapes were fragment, film and pellet/granule. Principal component analysis shows strong association of the concentration of microplastics with total solids and total suspended solids. Pollution risk indices show medium pollution risks of microplastics in bottled water. The estimated daily intake was generally low and therefore shows no risk from daily consumption but reveals a higher intake of microplastics for children than adults. The treatment of leachate is a complex process that involves the use of various treatment methods in order to achieve acceptable quality levels. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of transmembrane pressure (TMP) at a constant flow velocity (V = 2m/s) on the treatment of leachate from the controlled landfill of Oum Azza, Rabat, Morocco, as well as on the fouling mechanism of three ultrafiltration (UF) ceramic membranes (UF20, UF50, and UF100) with varying porosities of 20, 50, and 100 nm. The experiments were conducted using a semi-industrial pilot plant provided by the French Company TIA (Techniques Industrielles Appliquées), which was equipped with a ceramic membrane. Two mathematical models, the Hermia model and the Bolton model, were used to identify the fouling mechanisms of the tested membranes. The Hermia model provides four equations that describe the four fouling modes, namely cake formation, intermediate blockage, pore constriction, and complete blockage. Furthermore, the Bolton model combines these fouling mechanisms to determine whether fouling is caused by adsorption, occlusion, or compression of the filter layer. The results indicate that the permeate and rejection of pollution indicators (chemical oxygen demand, 5-day biochemical oxygen demand, and total suspended solids) for the three tested membranes are affected by the TMP. The UF20 membrane showed the best rejection rates, followed by UF50 and finally UF100. For permeate flow, UF100 > UF50 > UF20. According to the Hermia model, the fouling of all three membranes was superficial, with the main fouling mechanisms being cake formation or intermediate blockage. Application of the Bolton model equations revealed that fouling of the UF20 and UF50 membranes was described by the combined equation of cake formation and complete blockage. Fast urbanization has boosted the automotive sector in cities. Two service stations collected car wash water, which was analyzed thoroughly. pH, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, oil & grease, chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand, chlorides, and sulfates were measured. Chemical treatment used alum, while physical treatment used sawdust and sugarcane bagasse. Sample A contains wash water from 2- and 4-wheelers, while sample B has only 4-wheeler wash water. The empirical results show that physical treatment filter bed porosity, surface area, and height affect substance sorption. COD reduction for wood dust and sugarcane in sample A is 91.59% and 90.70%, while in sample B it is 81.40% and 86.70%. COD and oil & grease concentration were measured at 3, 6, and 9 cm filter columns. The percentage reduction in COD and oil & grease was related to filter material penetration. COD, oil, and grease removal effectiveness increases with filter bed depth. Alum's COD reduction is 89.10 in sample A and 87.50 in sample B, according to coagulant dosage. Alum removes 92.40% and 93.20% of oil & grease in samples A and B. Sample A used sugarcane bagasse and sawdust to remove 94.31% and 93.40% of oil & grease. Removal percentages in sample B were 92.67% and 93.80%. Sugarcane and wood dust reduces COD and oil & grease more in sample A than sample B. Sample A had a lower alum removal rate than sample B. The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of coagulation and flocculation (C/F) process and economic analysis for the advanced primary treatment in order to obtain a semi-closed water circuit in the pulp mills in the cardboard recycling industry. Since the high water quality level is not required in the pulpers, the dosages in this research were determined without pH changes or adjustment to decrease the capital and operational expenditures. The results showed that FeCl3 with the concentration of 2000 mg/L gave the best quality when coagulants were used solely. Moreover, using alum with the concentration of 1500 mg/L provided acceptable quality for the effluent re-circulation and the removal/reduction percentages of 42, 82, 71 and 97 were achieved for chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), turbidity and colour, respectively. It was also found that the combination of coagulants did not improve the process performance significantly. The best combination was ferric chloride (500 mg/L) and alum (2000 mg/L) with the efficiency of 47% and 98% in terms of COD and colour removal/reduction, respectively, while the best couple in TSS removal was FeCl3 (500 mg/L) and CaCO3 (500 mg/L) with the efficiency of 88%. The chemicals coupled with cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) did not enhance the quality of pre-treated solutions when the settling time reduced up to 15 minutes. The cost analysis also showed that alum is the most cost-effective coagulant with the costs in the range of 0.06–0.12 $/kg removed TSS, 0.06 to 0.11 $/kg removed COD and 0.06–0.1 $/m3·reduced NTU whereas calcium carbonate is the economic coagulant regarding colour reduction with the cost of 0.003 $/m3·reduced unit and more than the reduction efficiency of 90%. The study presents the results of the analyses of changes in the physicochemical and bacteriological condition of the Dunajec River waters in the years 2012-2021. The physicochemical condition was characterized based on the tests of 16 parameters: pH, specific electrolytic conductivity (SEC), total suspended solids, turbidity, color, dissolved oxygen, five-day biochemical oxygen demand, ammonium ion, nitrates, nitrites, phosphates, sulfates, chlorides, total iron, manganese, phenolic index. The bacteriological condition was assessed by analyzing the indices of coliform bacteria and Enterococcus faecalis. The analysis of the physicochemical state of the Dunajec River waters was carried out against the background of changes in water-sewage management, industry, land use, hydrological and meteorological conditions. The average values of physicochemical and bacteriological indicators of the Dunajec River waters tested over the years 2012-2021 were within the A1 and A2 categories of surface water quality. The results of the maximum tests in the year for such parameters as: total suspended solids, color, total iron, pH, ammonium ion, phenolic index, coliform bacteria and E. faecalis were in the A3 category of surface water quality. The analyses carried out showed that in the study period a decrease in nitrates, nitrites, sulphates, coliform bacteria and E. faecalis was observed as well as the rise of total suspended solids and pH of water. The technology used in the water treatment plant in Stary Sącz allows for an effective removal of physicochemical and bacteriological impurities from the surface water taken for the needs of the plant. The concentrations (annual average and maximum values in the year) of individual quality indicators of the treated water tested over the years 2012-2021 did not show any exceedance of permissible standards. Heavy metal and pesticide pollution of freshwater ecosystems, i.e., rivers, raises significant concerns worldwide, where practical solutions to reduce the threats become urgent need. Heavy metals and pesticides are top of the list of environmental toxicants endangering nature; therefore, pesticides and heavy metals were measured at 10 stations along the Al-Zennar agricultural drain and the Nile River at Assiut city in Upper Egypt, to assess potential negative impact on the water/sediment's quality. The sediment of the streambed is a sink for pesticides and heavy metals, where both water and sediments have higher contamination factor (CF) for Cd, Pb, Cr, Cu, and Zn. In addition, the Nile water is highly contaminated by PCBs. The distance to the point source and hydrodynamics (flow rate and stream gradient) has major influences in pollutant concentrations as indicated by regression models. Dilution effect and rapid sedimentation may comment on the lower concentrations of the pollutants in the Nile comparatively to the drain and on the water comparatively to the sediments. The physiochemistry of the stations has minor effect on the metal/pesticide concentration, where the variable importance of projection (VIP) of the partial least square model indicated that total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), SO42−, and BOD/TOC/COD are the main contributors to the metal/pesticide concentration. Concentrations were not correlated between water and sediment suggesting a historical accumulation in sediments and temporal variation in the pollution load in the Al-Zennar drain. Cattle wastewater (CW) is a potential source of several environmental problems. The high pollutant load of CW and the lack of adequate treatments contribute to the entrance of different contaminants into ecosystems. In this work, CW was treated using a coagulation–flocculation (CF) process. This work aimed to optimise the CF process with the application of almond hulls (AHs) and cherry pits (CPs) as coagulants to treat CW. The results showed that it was possible to achieve chemical oxygen demand (COD), turbidity and total suspended solids (TSS) removal of 39.1, 38.3 and 52.9%, respectively, for AHs (pH 3.0 and 0.1 g/L) and 42.4, 88.8 and 22.3%, respectively, for CPs (pH 3.0 and 0.1 g/L). It can be concluded that treating CW via the CF process with the application of AHs and CPs as coagulants is a sustainable and clean process. A composite cellulose acetate (CA) carbon-based aluminium hydroxide (CACG) hydrogel membrane was prepared for water purification and real leachate wastewater treatment. The composite CACG hydrogel structure was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Initially, the study investigated the efficiency of the composite CACG hydrogel membrane in removing divalent ions such as Cu2+, Pb2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ at 10 mg/L and 1000 mg/L concentrations from synthetic feed solutions. The results revealed that metal ions removal efficiency was higher at 10 mg/L feed concentration. The composite CACG hydrogel membrane demonstrated high selectivity for Cu2+ and Pb2+ ions, with more than 99% removal from the solution. The performance of the CACG hydrogel was evaluated in four cycles with a constant metal ions removal efficiency of over 98%. These findings suggest composite hydrogel could be a promising adsorbent material for removing metal ions from synthetic water and wastewater. The total suspended solids (TDS) were reduced by 58%. Oysters have the potential to be a part of more sustainable farming systems, such as multitrophic systems integrated into biofloc systems, due to their filtration activity, which enables them to act as organic consumers. However, the stress experienced by animals in a system with a high organic load can compromise their productive performance. The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological responses of Crassostrea gasar oysters when exposed to different concentrations of total suspended solids in biofloc systems. The oysters were exposed to four different concentrations of solids for 28 days. Hall effect sensors were installed on the outside of the shells to detect the movement of the oyster valves. Also, biochemical and histological analyses were conducted to assess the biological responses of the oysters to exposure to varying levels of solids. A difference in valve opening detected by the Hall sensors was observed from the second week of culture, indicating a relationship between shell closure and higher concentrations of suspended solids present in the system. In terms of biochemical analysis, a significant increase in lipid damage was observed in treatments with medium and high levels of total suspended solids compared with the control group. Conversely, no changes were observed in the gill structure of the oysters caused by the concentrations of suspended solids in the system when compared with the control. According to the analyses of gill activity and biochemistry, it is suggested that C. gasar should be cultured with total suspended solids at less than 200 mg/L. Oysters cultivated in a biofloc system keep their shells closed when subjected to high concentrations of total suspended solids; concentrations of total suspended solids below 200 mg/L do not induce oxidative stress, changes in behavior or histological alterations in C. gasar oysters cultivated in a biofloc system. Total suspended solids (TSS) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) are critical water quality parameters. Focusing on the Pearl River Estuary and its coastal waters, this study compared the performance of XGBoost- and BPNN-based algorithms in estimating TSS and Chl-a levels. The XGBoost-based algorithm demonstrated better performance and was then used to estimate TSS and Chl-a in the Pearl River Estuary and coastal waters from 2000 to 2021. According to our results, TSS and Chl-a were relatively high mainly in the northwest and low in the southeast. Furthermore, values were high in spring and summer and low in fall and winter, with high values emerging near the estuary of the Pearl River. In summer, a band zone with high Chl-a was observed from south of Yamen to south of Hong Kong. In terms of trends, TSS and Chl-a concentrations in the area around the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge tended to decrease from 2000 to 2021. As the construction of the bridge began, changes in water flow caused by the bridge piers and artificial islands were influenced, the change in the rate of TSS in the west area of the bridge was greater than 0, and the TSS in the upstream area of the west side changed from decreasing to increasing trends. Concerning Chl-a concentrations, the change in the rate in the downstream area of the west side of the bridge was greater than 0. Remote sensing has emerged as a promising tool for monitoring water quality (WQ) in aquatic ecosystems. This study evaluates the effectiveness of remote sensing in assessing WQ parameters in Cajititlán and Zapotlán lakes in the state of Jalisco, Mexico. Over time, these lakes have witnessed a significant decline in WQ, necessitating the adoption of advanced monitoring techniques. In this research, satellite-based remote sensing data were combined with ground-based measurements from the National Water Quality Monitoring Network of Mexico (RNMCA). These data sources were harnessed to train and evaluate the performance of six distinct categories of machine learning (ML) algorithms aimed at estimating WQ parameters with active spectral signals, including chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), turbidity, and total suspended solids (TSS). Various limitations were encountered during the study, primarily due to atmospheric conditions and cloud cover. These challenges affected both the quality and quantity of the data. However, these limitations were overcome through rigorous data preprocessing, the application of ML techniques designed for data-scarce scenarios, and extensive hyperparameter tuning. The superlearner algorithm (SLA), which leverages a combination of individual algorithms, and the multilayer perceptron (MLP), capable of handling complex and non-linear problems, outperformed others in terms of predictive accuracy. Notably, in Lake Cajititlán, these models provided the most accurate predictions for turbidity (r2 = 0.82, RMSE = 9.93 NTU, MAE = 7.69 NTU), Chl-a (r2 = 0.60, RMSE = 48.06 mg/m3, MAE = 37.98 mg/m3), and TSS (r2 = 0.68, RMSE = 13.42 mg/L, MAE = 10.36 mg/L) when using radiometric data from Landsat-8. In Lake Zapotlán, better predictive performance was observed for turbidity (r2 = 0.75, RMSE = 2.05 NTU, MAE = 1.10 NTU) and Chl-a (r2 = 0.71, RMSE = 6.16 mg/m3, MAE = 4.97 mg/m3) with Landsat-8 radiometric data, while TSS (r2 = 0.72, RMSE = 2.71 mg/L, MAE = 2.12 mg/L) improved when Sentinel-2 data were employed. While r2 values indicate that the models do not exhibit a perfect fit, those approaching unity suggest that the predictor variables offer valuable insights into the corresponding responses. Moreover, the model's robustness could be enhanced by increasing the quantity and quality of input variables. The Anwai River is the most important river in Asaba, Nigeria, because of its many uses, and these include abattoir activities. The aim of this study was to assess the surface water and surrounding soil of the Anwai River for the effects of abattoir activities during the wet and dry seasons of 2020. The quality of soil and water samples was analysed using standard procedures as set by the American Public Health Association. Results of water analyses showed that pH, total dissolved solids and total suspended solids varied from 6.45 to 6.67, 13.50 mg L−1 to 24.42 mg L−1, and 2.19 ± 0.04 mg L−1 to 10.79 mg L−1, respectively. Soil pH, total organic content, Pd and Cr had a range of 5.83 to 7.65 pH units, 0.15 to 2.74%, 1.88 ± 0.03 to 22.8 ± 0.28 mg kg−1, and 0.86 ± 0.03 to 4.87 ± 0.04 mg kg−1, respectively. There were significant differences between Upstream, Midstream (by the abattoir) and Downstream samples; however, there were no significant differences between dry and wet season results for most of the parameters. Midstream values for the water quality index were 104.89 and 119.34 in the dry and wet seasons, respectively, which showed that the Midstream water samples were poor. There is growing interest in studying the impact of alternative agricultural management practices on runoff and soil loss under future climate change scenarios. In order to address this interest, it is important to demonstrate that runoff and soil loss can be accurately simulated under existing climates based on comparisons between modeled and experimental results. This study calibrates and validates the Water Erosion Prediction Project (WEPP) model to quantify the accuracy of predicting growing season runoff and soil erosion in agricultural hillslopes based on comparisons with experimental data from five Minnesota hydrologic unit code 12 watersheds. In order to accurately predict runoff and soil erosion in each watershed, the baseline effective hydraulic conductivity (Kbe), interrill and rill erodibility (EIR and ER), and monthly precipitation standard deviations (Pstdev) were calibrated in WEPP using observed runoff and total suspended solids data from five Minnesota Discovery Farms field sites. Before calibration, Nash–Sutcliffe model efficiency (NSE) and percent bias (PBIAS) values for predicted versus measured monthly average total runoff (Ravg‐T), runoff ratios (RRT), and total soil loss were generally not in acceptable ranges. After calibration, the NSE values showed very good fits between measured and predicted monthly Ravg‐T (0.64–0.98), RRT (0.66–0.93), and soil loss (0.58–0.80). PBIAS values were also within acceptable ranges for Ravg‐T and RRT (±25%) and soil loss (±55%), except for RRT at site BE1. NSE and PBIAS values during validation were within acceptable ranges, except for RRT at site BE1. These findings suggest that the WEPP hillslopes calibrated in this study are sufficiently robust to accurately predict monthly runoff and soil erosion in Minnesota agricultural fields during the growing season. This review paper describes different control applications for the A2/O process in sewage wastewater treatment plants. The contents elucidate the research carried out in the literature related to the design of different types of controllers for controlling different variables such as dissolved oxygen, nitrate, total suspended solids, ammonia, etc. that are responsible for the simultaneous removal of both nitrogen and phosphorus. A comprehensive analysis is carried out based on the important factors for the implementation of the control systems with critical discussion and achievements. Control strategies range from simple controllers such as proportional–integral (PI) to the latest (advanced) control approaches such as model-based predictive, fuzzy logic, artificial neural network, and optimal controllers. A distributed control system applied to the A2/O pilot plant is also elucidated. A summary of comparisons between different control systems are assessed and reported in this review. A seasonal plethora of cyanobacteria in the plankton community can have severe implications, not only for water ecosystems but also for the availability of treated water. The catchment of the Obrzyca River (a source of drinking water) is seasonally exposed to harmful cyanobacterial bloom. Previous studies (2008–2012; 2019) revealed that the most polluted water of the Obrzyca River was Uście, close to the outlet of Rudno Lake (at the sampling point). Therefore, the effect on this lake was specifically examined in this study. Sampling was performed from May to September at that site and from July to September 2020 at Rudno Lake. The conducted analysis revealed a massive growth of Aphanizomenon gracile, especially in Rudno Lake. The results showed not only the distinct impact of cyanobacterial bloom on phytoplankton biodiversity but also the presence of microcystins and other cyanopeptides in both sampling points. The maximal total concentration of microcystins (dmMC-RR, MC-RR, dmMC-LR, MC-LR, MC-LY, MC-YR) equaled 57.3 μg/L and the presence of cyanopeptides (aeruginosin, anabaenopeptin) was originally determined in Rudno Lake, August 2021. The presence of these toxins was highlighted in our results for the first time. The same samples from the lake were the most toxic in biotoxicological investigations using the planarian Dugesia tigrina. The performed bioassays proved that D. tigrina is a sensitive bioindicator for cyanotoxins. The physical and chemical indicators of water quality, i.e., color, temperature, total suspended solids, and total nitrogen and phosphorus, showed a significant correlation among each other and towards cyanobacterial abundance and microcystin concentrations. Background: Tannery wastewater effluents contain many toxic and carcinogenic heavy metals and physiochemical parameters that need to be removed before these effluents enter in the main water bodies or rivers. In this study, the effluents from the tannery industry are treated through aeration, coagulation, and Chlorella vulgaris pond treatment processes for the removal of physiochemical: parameters only. Methods: The effect of removal efficiencies (%) was studied on the physicochemical parameters, including salinity, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), turbidity, total suspended solids (TSS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Results: The key results showed that the removal of EC, TDS, turbidity, TSS, BOD, and COD was 80.2%, 67%, 81%, 80.8%, 68.6%, and 100%, respectively, in raw wastewater treatment having 25, 50, and 70 g of algae C. vulgaris doses. The removal efficiencies (%) of salinity, EC, TDS, turbidity, TSS, BOD, and COD were 83%, 87.1%, 77.1%, 80%, 40%, 97%, and 98%, respectively, during coagulated wastewater treatment with three doses of algae. The observed improvement in treated wastewater indicated that the removal efficiencies (%) of salinity, EC, TDS, turbidity, TSS, BOD, and COD were 85.7%, 39.3%, 81.3%, 67.8%, 50.3%, 97%, and 98%, with C. vulgaris. Conclusion: This study confirmed that the treatment of tannery wastewater by these processes increased the pollutant removal efficiencies as all the physiochemical parameters were exceeding the permissible limits. Results contribution in future: This research will be helpful to treat the industrial wastewaters or effluents before it further mixes up in the main water streams. In this way, water quality will be better, aquatic life will be saved, and further researchers can analyze more ways for efficient treatments as they have a baseline data through this study findings. Extensive urbanization impairs biological communities through landscape alteration and physiochemical changes to stream ecosystems. Analogous to urban development in cities, new building and facility expansion on university campuses can lead to dramatic changes in impervious cover and consequently, increased stormflow impacting downstream ecological communities. Here, we analyze the extent and relevance on a nationwide scale to determine campuses with the highest risk for ecological impairment. From the US‐wide analysis of 5761 college/university campuses, ~45% of campuses were within critical aquatic species watersheds, and >5% were identified as buffering critical habitat. The highest risk campus our study identified was selected to compare the impacts of planned, conventional development versus sustainable development on a sensitive aquatic species, the federally threatened Jollyville Plateau salamander (Eurycea tonkawae). Impervious cover, simulated increases in stormwater runoff, and total suspended solids (TSS) from the conventional expansion is estimated to lower salamander density. Conversely, an alternative campus expansion plan allowed for increased development but permitted provisions for reduced runoff and TSS, thereby maintaining current salamander densities. Our findings show that sustainable campus development plans have the potential to mitigate ecological disruption within watersheds, and that campus management and policies are critical for preserving biodiversity in the future. Understanding the major drivers of runoff water quality in urban areas is important for sustainable water management. In this study, runoff water quality in a catchment in Colombia and another in Brazil was monitored and related to rain, and meteorological variables through correlation and principal component analysis. High correlations were found between event mean concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) and total phosphorus (TP), as well as with total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total organic carbon (TOC). The results indicated that TSS and TP were related to sediment transport in the catchment, while NTK and TOC were derived from point sources (improper wastewater disposal). Rain depth, maximum specific discharge, air temperature, and solar radiation were the main factors explaining variability of water quality. These results contribute to a better understanding of local processes driving runoff water quality, and bring valuable insights for modelling and management of stormwater in urban catchments. Oceanic storms can strongly disturb the physical and biogeochemical conditions of transitional coastal waters. Impacts of extreme oceanic storms on coastal ecosystems have received limited attention worldwide, with no studies at higher latitudes (> 45°) where tropical cyclones have usually abated. This study investigates the combined impacts from marine and atmospheric forcing on a coastal lagoon in Prince Edward Island, Canada, during and after Extratropical Cyclone Fiona in September 2022. Physical (water levels and temperature) and biogeochemical (dissolved oxygen [DO], electrical conductivity, pH, nitrate–nitrogen concentrations, total suspended solids [TSS]) datasets from the lagoon and the watershed's tributaries, groundwater springs, and piezometers were used to assess ecosystem disturbance and recovery timelines following the storm. Fiona resulted in a 1.6 m storm surge into the lagoon that elevated water temperatures by up to 6°C, disturbed the density‐dependent stratification of salinity and temperature, and reduced the diel amplitude of DO, indicating a reduction in plant respiration due to ecosystem disturbance. The freshwater tributaries revealed sharp changes in flow (30‐fold increase), nitrate–nitrogen (NO3‐N) concentrations and loading (70‐fold increase), and TSS loading (40‐fold increase) to the lagoon during and immediately following the storm. The lagoon rapidly recovered (hours) from the hydraulic disturbance of the storm surge, but elevated nutrient levels persisted for months. The intensity and frequency of extratropical cyclones is projected to increase in the Northwest Atlantic, making field‐based studies of cyclone impacts on coastal waters critical for understanding future coastal ecosystem disturbance and recovery periods relative to the timing of future storms. The continuous monitoring of total suspended solids (TSS) in streams plays an important role in the management of hydrological processes, and TSS is also a decisive parameter in the control of pollution in streams. Determination of TSS involves both a costly and time-consuming process. For this reason, there is a need to determine TSS more quickly, easily reliably, and economically. In this study, it is aimed to classify TSS concentration by using stream water surface images recorded with a mobile phone. For this purpose, the sampling studies carried out in the Lower Değirmendere Stream Watershed (Trabzon, northeast of Turkey) between June 2020 and May 2021, and the images of the stream water surface were taken and recorded with a mobile phone simultaneously with the sampling studies. The stream water surface images and TSS concentration were divided into four classification group, namely clear, turbid, very turbid, and extremely turbid and processed with deep learning method. More than 5500 stream water surface images and TSS concentration data were divided into groups as 70% training and the rest of test. This study uses eight convolutional neural network (CNN) models, including a custom CNN model designed for image classification, along with pre-existing architectures such as VGG-16, VGG-19, Inception-V3, Xception, DenseNet-121, MobileNet, and NASNet-mobile. The results revealed that the most effective ensemble model formation strategy was stacking with an accuracy rate of 87%, followed by weighted averaging, averaging, and majority voting. As a result, with the image of the stream water surface via the mobile phone camera, it can be easily determined which class the current TSS concentration belongs to instantly. The occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in water is a rising issue in the environment. These drugs in the waste may be toxic to aquatic organisms and humans as they disrupt the endocrine system, cause genotoxicity, etc. Several techniques were used for the treatment of pharmaceutical wastewater, such as physical, chemical, physiochemical, and biological processes like adsorption, chemical coagulation, and activated sludge processes, but these techniques possess several merits and demerits, such as higher installation and operation costs. The Ramsar site, Sasthamcotta Fresh Water Lake in Kerala, has been facing major challenges of deterioration for the past two decades. The present study was accomplished with the assessment of water quality at five locations inside the lake for the period from 2014 to 2022. During this period, fifty-four water samples were collected from these locations, and physiochemical parametric studies, viz., pH, conductance, total dissolved solids, total suspended solids, alkalinity, acidity, chemical oxygen demand, total hardness, and chloride content, were conducted. The assessed water quality parameters indicated 100% conformance to Bureau of Indian Standards except for pH, acidity, and total suspended solids. This may be due to anthropogenic activities leading to soil erosion, overspill, acquittals, coming-up-bottom sediments, or algal blooms. Density plots of the respective experimental values underscored that conductivity, suspended solids, and total hardness indicate a large amount of dispersion of data. The water quality index (WQi) calculated pertaining to different sites pointed to the fact that there are only negligible variations across the sites of sample collection. The site of Valla Kadavu has the maximum water quality, and the center of the lake showed a marginal reduction in water quality. Year-wise analysis of the quality of the lake water showed a clear improvement in its quality during COVID years, starting from 2020 onwards. This is due to the drop in anthropogenic activities during COVID times. However, water quality returned to pre-COVID levels in 2022. Also, we can conclude that the anthropogenic activities like sand mining, fishing, etc. contribute only 15% of the drop in WQi or water quality. In numerous wastewater treatment processes, the parameters of biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solids (TSS) assume a pivotal role. Typically, conventional statistical methods are employed for the surveillance of these three variables. However, in many real-world scenarios, data collection may occur under uncertain conditions, and not all measurements in the dataset are characterized by precision. This research endeavor aims to oversee these critical variables by constructing Hotelling's T 2 control chart using neutrosophic data. The proposed approach utilizes neutrosophic observations of the three variables to create the neutrosophic Hotelling's T 2 (NHT) control chart. Additionally, a comparative analysis has been conducted using the Sullivan and Woodall (SW) method and the Holmes and Mergen (HM) method to assess the effectiveness of each of these methods in detecting shifts and establishing forthcoming production limits. Notably, the SW method exhibits higher sensitivity in shift detection when compared to the HM method. The SW method has been found better for identifying the early shift than that of HM. The mean vector has been computed along with the covariance matrix estimates using both the SW and HM methods to estimate the future production limits. Treatment and recycling of textile effluents in an economical and eco-friendly manner is a global issue, especially in developing countries. The current study used an integration of wet and dry laboratory investigations to understand the significance of azoreductase enzyme in bacterial degradation of azo dyes and, subsequently, actual wastewater recycling. The study exclusively reports an indigenously isolated bacterial strain Bacillus paramycoides AM3 as an NADPH-dependent FMN reductase-harboring bacteria specifying 99.98% relatedness in the database based on the nucleotide sequence of its azoreductase enzyme. The RMSD values indicated the strong interaction of this enzyme with reactive black-5 (RB-5), reactive red-120 (RR-129), and Congo red (CR) dyes in molecular docking studies. In the wet laboratory experiments, approximately 80% of RB-5, RR-120, and CR were removed in 72 h by the strain AM-3, whereas yeast extract, pH 6, and 30°C turned out to be the best carbon source, pH, and temperature levels, respectively, to optimize dye degradation process for this strain. After treatment, the Bacillus paramycoides strain AM-3 lowered all standard water testing parameters such as pH, electrical conductivity, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, and biological oxygen demand. In the pot experiment, the maize plants irrigated with recycled wastewater (treated with the strain AM-3) showed growth and metabolic response statistically at par with normally irrigated maize plants with distilled water, whereas the plants watered with non-treated wastewater revealed significantly less growth and physiological response. It was concluded that Bacillus paramycoides strain AM-3 is not only capable of degrading textile azo dyes but also treating textile effluents to the extent of their fitness for use in agriculture. Total suspended solids (TSS) can be a useful indicator of environmental change in nearshore coastal environments. Understanding the mechanisms of TSS variations in response to environmental drivers is of broad interest for ecology and geomorphology. The Yellow River Delta (YRD) in China is a fragile coastal region that has been affected by human activities and climate change. Here, we investigated TSS along the YRD shoreline over two decades with time‐series satellite data (2002–2020). We observed that TSS concentration decreased significantly in nearshore waters (5‐m isobath) surrounding the YRD, especially in the LaiZhou Bay. During the same time period, wave height (WH) along the deltaic shoreline and sediment load from the Yellow River have decreased, while sea surface height (SSH) has displayed a positive trend. Our results indicate that WH and SSH play a major role in sediment resuspension and dispersion, while the YSD mildly affected TSS variability along the coast. Monthly bed shear stress triggered by waves was then computed using WH, wave period (WP), and SSH. Bed shear stress and TSS displayed a positive correlation. We concluded that seasonal oscillations in SSH in conjunction with wind waves are responsible for TSS variability in the shallow waters in front of the YRD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effectiveness of a horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSFCW) for treating domestic wastewater (DWW) effluent was investigated over a six-month period under a variety of operational conditions, including vegetation (planted or unplanted "canna indica and Typha letifolia," media type (various types of soil, sand, and aggregate), and mode of wastewater feeding (continuous and submerged). All contaminants, with the exception of phosphorus, were significantly affected by plants (P< 0.05) in terms of removal effectiveness and mass removal rate. The average maximum removal efficiencies for total suspended solids (TSS), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP), and total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) were 96.1%, 75.4%, 59.0%, 64.7%, and 49.4%, respectively, for planted beds versus 89.1%, 69.2%, 55.9%, 65.2%, and 42.4%, respectively, for unplanted beds under both conditions. On the removal efficiency of COD and BOD5, neither the media type nor the feeding mode system had a significant impact. When compared to gravel, soil media considerably (P <0.05) improved the wetland's ability to remove SRP, especially in the planted beds. Comparing the continuous mode (HRT 0.5 days) to the submerged mode (HRT 02 days), the continuous mode was more efficient at removing SRP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, greywater samples are collected from the kitchens of different types of buildings (residential and commercial) located in different districts within the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The collected samples are analyzed and compared with the potable water from the same region. The parameters investigated are pH, conductivity, total solids (TS), total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), total hardness, temporary hardness, permanent hardness, alkalinity, chloride, and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD). It was found that the amount of total suspended solids is very high in the greywater samples. It shows the presence of both temporary and permanent hardness. Their alkalinity values are greater than hardness. It may be due to the number, lifestyle, age of the occupants, presence of children, and social and cultural behavior of residents. The concentration of BOD level is very low, which shows that the greywater samples have lower concentrations of organic compounds. Design details of the greywater treatment plant are suggested based on the results of the analysis. This includes a screening chamber, grit chamber, settling tank, and filtration unit. Indiscriminate dumping of battery waste is a huge issue that endangers human health and the environment. This study aimed at analysing the health impacts of exposure to pollution from spent battery recycling in Ogun State, which houses a diverse range of battery recycling industries. At this study site, forty water samples were studied over the Wet and Dry seasons to assess the impact of battery recycling waste on groundwater. Except for the TSS, the physiochemical parameters of the groundwater vary with season and are within the permissible limits. The electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, Phosphorus, Biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), Dissolve oxygen (DO), and Total suspended solid (TSS) within the study year ranges from 51.00 - 178.22 S/cm, 2.26 - 2.36 NTU, 0.089 - 0.66 mg/L, 13.3 - 14.2 mg/L, 5.06 - 5.67 mg/L, and 78.0 - 88.4 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, the average concentrations (in ppm) obtained for Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, As, Fe, Pb, Cr, and Co are 0.407 - 0.42, 0.355 - 0.369, 0.179 - 0.225, 0.061 - 0.265, 0.366 - 0.464, 0.488 - 0.631, 0.544 - 0.601, 0.481 - 0.576, 0.284 - 0.334, 0.3 - 0.382. The Heavy Metal Pollution Index (HPI) values ranging from 3.880 to 4.528 indicate minimal levels of heavy metal contamination, but water quality index (WQI) scores ranging from 124.68 to 131.46 indicate potential environmental hazards. Purpose: The increase in maritime traffic in the Bay of Koper (Gulf of Trieste, northern Adriatic Sea) has been made possible given the increase in the local port capacity and logistics, which, in turn, means an increase in the number of arrivals of larger vessels (which were the original motive for port expansion); this poses a potential risk for coastal environments due to the impact of the resuspension of bottom sediment which affects the physical and chemical characteristics of the water column. The aim of this work was to assess the magnitude of these perturbative events. Materials and methods: Turbidity (NTU) measurements were made using a CTD multiprobe during a vessel manoeuvre in the port navigational canal and in the entire Bay of Koper. In the highest turbidity zone, samples were collected from the surface water layer (0.5 m), at a depth of 6.0 m and 12.0 m. Total suspended solids (TSS) and suspended organic matter (SOM) were measured gravimetrically. TSS grain-size distribution was determined using a laser granulometer. Results and discussion: The effect of the vessel manoeuvre was evident on turbidity with a maximum value of 137 NTU (TSS = ~ 139 mg l−1) and a sampled concentration of TSS of 37 mg l−1 (bottom layer) in the water column immediately after the ship manoeuvre. Grain-size analysis shows a spectrum of particles with a mode size between 22 and 88 μm (medium silt and very fine sand, respectively). The estimated resuspension mass of total suspended solids (TSS) was ~ 109 t in the restricted manoeuvre area extending about ~ 736 × 493 m and with an average depth of 15 m. Conclusions: The results demonstrated the significant impact of vessel manoeuvres on the measured parameters, the impact of which cannot be underestimated in terms of marine environmental protection and maritime traffic safety. As the development of tight gas fields enters the stable production stage, condensate oil forms a complex oil--water emulsifying system under the action of bubble drainage agent, corrosion inhibitor, hydrate inhibitor, and other additives to increase and stabilize production, as well as the formation of particulate matter. A new demulsification and flocculation agent suitable for condensate emulsifying system is developed to make the system unstable and the oil beads coalesce. In this paper, a polyether--quaternary ammonium salt reverse demulsifier (PPA) was synthesized by grafting a cationic group onto a five-membered block polyether X-75. A new type of demulsification--flocculation agent (CQ) was obtained through the complex modification of PPA and inorganic coagulant polyaluminum ferric chloride. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and gel chromatograph were used to characterize the group and molecular structure. The reaction parameters were optimized by single-factor experiment and the response surface method, and the demulsification--flocculation mechanism was determined by zeta potential, interfacial tension, and fractal dimension. Results showed the PPA demulsifier has active groups (block polyether) and cationic groups (polyquaternary ammonium salt) at the oil--water interface at the same time and can play a synergistic role between them. Single-factor experiment and response surface optimization showed CQ concentration and temperature were key factors affecting the demulsification-- flocculation effect. When CQ concentration was 547 mg/L, settling temperature was 27.9°C and PPA accounted for 71%. After settling for 30 min, the oil content and the concentration of total suspended solids (TSS) in the water decreased to 21.26 and 7.0 mg/L, respectively, which met the water quality requirements of reinjection (oil content ≤ 30 mg/L, TSS concentration ≤ 15 mg/L). By neutralizing and displacing active substances at the oil--water interface and sweeping by net trapping, CQ can coagulate oil beads and suspended particles to form large flocs and realize the efficient separation of oil beads, suspended particles, and water. Satellite image channels have been widely used by researchers from various countries to map and analyze variables that have a lot of influence on ecosystem changes including the total suspended solid levels scattered on the coast. The use of 1 channel in satellite images provides many results with various good correlations, but in this study, we want to try to use a 2-channel approach to get more optimal results from total suspended solid mapping. The area of interest for research is the Tuban coastline which has a fairly flat and not hilly coastal morphology so that sea currents that carry solids have characteristics in their growth over time. The method used to construct the algorithm of these 2 channels is the use of reflectance values of visible light wavelengths in blue, green and red channels. The results obtained from the calculation of the 2-channel algorithm show a fairly good suitability and correlation, especially in the comparison of the blue channel with the red channel with an R2 value of 0.76 so that it can be used as a reference to monitor total suspended solids as well as a comparison for the calculation of 1 channel. The conclusion obtained is that the channels from satellite images have their own characteristics in providing reflectance values for objects on earth so that with the right combination of channels will be able to obtain accurate results in mapping total suspended solids. The transition from the linear economy paradigm to the circular economy in industrial wastewater treatment systems is on the global agenda. The search for new simple, eco-innovative, and low-cost processes for treating industrial wastewater, which can also be used by small and medium-sized industries, has been a constant challenge especially when environmental sustainability is considered. So, a new integrated industrial wastewater treatment system has been developed that includes the immediate one-step lime precipitation process (IOSLM) and atmospheric carbonation (AC), followed by constructed wetlands (CWs) or adsorption. The current review provides an overview of industrial wastewater treatment strategies for high- and low-biodegradable wastewater. A background on functionality, applicability, advantages and disadvantages, operating variables, removal mechanisms, main challenges, and recent advances are carried out for each process that makes up the IOSLM+AC+CW/adsorption integrated system. The prospects of the IOSLM+AC+CW/adsorption integrated system are also discussed. Not neglecting the improvements that still need to be made in the integrated treatment system as well as its application to various types of industrial wastewater, this review highlights that this treatment system is promising in industrial wastewater treatment and consequent by-product recovery. The IOSLM+AC integrated system showed that it can remove high amounts of organic matter, total suspended solids, oils and fats, phosphorus, and ammonium nitrogen from industrial effluents. On the other hand, constructed wetlands/adsorption can be alternatives for refining effluents still containing organic matter and nitrogen that were not possible to remove in the previous steps. Industrial wastewater causes water and soil pollution, leading to life-threatening issues. Wastewater comprises several dyes, detergents, phenols, chemical salts, and heavy metals which enhance temperature, pH, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) load, total suspended solids, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), chlorides, sulfate, and nitrate of affected sites. Dye effluent is highly toxic and leads to mutagenic and carcinogenic outcomes on living beings. Environmental laws are being passed more frequently to control mostly azo-based dyes in the environment. The effluent must be treated before being discarded directly into the ecological ecosystem so that it can be reutilised and recycled for domestic purposes. In the present scenario, using a physicochemical-based approach is inefficient for eliminating contaminants as the process is expensive, and a secondary pollutant, sludge, is produced after the treatment. Being cheap and ecofriendly, the therapy of dye-laden water using microorganisms is a trend. The authors of the current review study have tried to bridge the gap in the bioremediation of dye wastewater. The review imparts an overview of the textile industry, the generation of wastewater by it, the environmental pollution caused, and its impact on the ecosystem. The discussion mainly focuses on the detailed analysis of the last few decades on the decolorisation efficiencies of numerous bioremediation techniques involved in treating textile dye effluent. The water of high Andean lakes is strongly affected by anthropic activities. However, due to its complexity this ecosystem is poorly researched. This study analyzes water quality using Sentinel-2 (S2) images in high Andean lakes with apparent different eutrophication states. Spatial and temporal patterns are assessed for biophysical water variables from automatic products as obtained from versions of C2RCC (Case 2 Regional Coast Color) processor (i.e., C2RCC, C2X, and C2X-COMPLEX) to observe water characteristics and eutrophication states in detail. These results were validated using in situ water sampling. C2X-COMPLEX appeared to be an appropriate option to study bodies of water with a complex dynamic of water composition. C2RCC was adequate for lakes with high transparency, typical for lakes of highlands with excellent water quality. The Yambo lake, with chlorophyll-a concentration (CHL) values of 79.6 ± 5 mg/m3, was in the eutrophic to hyper-eutrophic state. The Colta lake, with variable values of CHL, was between the oligotrophic to mesotrophic state, and the Atillo lakes, with values of 0.16 ± 0.1 mg/m3, were oligotrophic and even ultra-oligotrophic, which remained stable in the last few years. Surface water quality (SWQ) has been degraded in the Mekong River Basin under increasing pressures of population growth, economic development, and global climate change. This study employed the comprehensive water pollution index (CWPI) to assess the spatio-temporal variation of SWQ in the downstream Mekong River estuaries. Eight water quality parameters were measured between 2005 and 2021 at 21 sampling sites downstream of the Mekong River. These parameters included total suspended solids (TSS), biological oxygen demand (BOD5), chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia (N-NH4 +), nitrate (N-NO3 -), phosphate (P-PO4 3-), iron (Fe), and total coliform. Most of the monitoring locations in the estuaries of Ham Luong, Cua Dai, Ba Lai, and Co Chien exhibited slightly to moderately polluted conditions, as indicated by the CWPI values ranging from 0.67-2.91, 0.41-2.20, 0.27-3.02, and 0.37-2.95, respectively. TSS and Fe concentrations consistently exceeded the allowable limits, while the majority of values for N-NH4 +, N-NO3 -, P-PO4 3-, and coliform remained within acceptable thresholds. Additionally, parameters indicative of organic pollution, namely BOD5 and COD, displayed a noticeable upward trend between 2005 and 2021. SWQ exhibited significant spatial and temporal variations with TSS, organic matter, nutrients, and iron being the main areas of concern. These findings can provide guidance to policymakers involved in the assessment and enhancement of water quality in the presence of pollutant compounds that lead to a decline in water quality.
