Abstract

In the article, the authors reveal the methods of expanding the formation of the scientific ecological worldview of student youth in the "Ecology" field of study. The modern educational process requires not only the assimilation of scientific knowledge, but also the education of a moral, ethical, responsible personality in relation to nature, the biosphere, any form of life, as the most important human value. Life is the most unique and highest value on the planet. Preserving life in all forms and manifestations is the main goal of a modern ecologist today. Creating an artificial environment for his habitat, man, in pursuit of economic profit, began to treat the biosphere in a consumerist way, destroying, destroying, bringing it to a tense state. This attitude towards nature leads not only to the destruction of ecosystems and the biosphere, but also to the impoverishment of the spiritual and moral foundations of a person's personality. In the conditions of the growing ecological crisis, it is necessary to change the attitude towards nature, to understand the value of any form of life. It is nature that can inspire and develop the spiritual and moral basis of a person. In this aspect, environmental education, aimed at changing and improving the scientific outlook, acquires special significance. Only on the basis of a new type of relationship between man and nature is a way out of this crisis possible. In the system of environmental education, new relevant environmental areas and training profiles are emerging. There are new tasks for students. Employers increasingly set high demands for future ecologists: they demand a high level of professional knowledge, skills and abilities, clearly navigate the problems of ecosystem disturbances, apply the latest methods of restoration, quickly and correctly make decisions in situations of a natural and man-made nature, the ability to own innovative technologies. In connection with the new requirements for a modern ecologist, there is a need to expand the educational process and innovative pedagogical approaches, to expand the scientific outlook of higher education students. 253. ‘Do You Think I Can Kill You?’ Exploring Intimate Femicide in South Africa and Why Intimacy Hurts So Much

Abstract

This article draws on two South African books published recently dealing with violence against women, namely Nechama Brodie’s Femicide in South Africa (2020), and Kopano Ratele’s Why Men Hurt Women and Other Reflections on Love, Violence and Masculinity (2022). Both authors explore strategies for the prevention of violence against women and this article supplements their strategies with an idea put forth by Hannah Arendt in The Life of the Mind (1978). The article argues that intimate femicide persists in South Africa, to an extent as a result of the construction of a certain type of ‘hard’, ‘patriarchal’, ‘traditional’ masculinity that cannot admit its own frailty, dependence, impotence and powerlessness, and attempts to conceal its needs by becoming violent. Arendt argues that violence and power are opposites and that equating male violence with power is a lie that violence perpetuates about itself. Arendt proposes that the antidote to this false mastery and control is the activity of thinking, as distinguished from knowing. The article argues that the activity of thinking acts as a brake on the fantasy of masculine mastery and control and can perhaps minimise violence.

Abstract

This article deals with the development of intellectual abilities of students in the process of using geoinformation technology. Digital technologies, in particular geographic information technologies, are increasingly introduced in the educational process of modern schools. They contribute to the learning of mapping skills, the formation of skills to compare, specify, abstract, summarize, establish cause-effect relationships, draw conclusions, develop critical thinking, contributing to the formation of key competencies aimed at self-development and continuing education, the scientific sophistication and geographic culture. The paper reveals such concepts as thinking, intelligence, functions, qualities of intelligence. It covers the psychological and age-specific features of development, the criteria of age periodization, mechanisms of thought, different ways of theoretical description of the children's development, evaluation of intelligence, types of thinking. Abstract

This book develops the challenges that history teaching must face as a curricular subject at the beginning of the 21st century. These challenges are related, both to new epistemological approaches in history education, and also to the development of new activities, active-learning methodologies, and historical thinking competencies. In terms of new approaches, this book suggests activities regarding invisible topics such as social and economic impacts in history, inequalities, church and science, gender equality, power and violence, prosecuted by justice, peasantry and the urban world, family and daily life, terror or travelers and their cross-currents. Regarding the activities, the incidence of new technologies in social relations and the effects of globalization is very remarkable for our students. The authors highlight the need for changes in teaching and learning history.

Abstract

We assessed whether an artifact's design can facilitate recognition of abstract causal rules. In Experiment 1, 152 three-year-olds were presented with evidence consistent with a relational rule (i.e., pairs of same or different blocks activated a machine) using two differently designed machines. In the standard-design condition, blocks were placed on top of the machine; in the relational-design condition, blocks were placed into openings on either side. In Experiment 2, we assessed whether this design cue could facilitate adults' (N = 102) inference of a distinct conjunctive cause (i.e., that two blocks together activate the machine). Results of both experiments demonstrated that causal inference is sensitive to an artifact's design: Participants in the relational-design conditions were more likely to infer rules that were a priori unlikely. Our findings suggest that reasoning failures may result from difficulty generating the relevant rules as cognitive hypotheses but that artifact design aids causal inference. These findings have clear implications for creating intuitive learning environments.

Abstract

ObjectiveIntrusive thoughts, defined as unwanted and recurrent thoughts about a stressful experience, are associated with psychological distress in women with breast cancer. This study assessed moderating effects of various social support dimensions on associations between intrusive thoughts and psychological distress among Latina breast cancer survivors.MethodsWe used baseline data from a randomized controlled trial of a stress management intervention delivered to 151 Spanish-speaking Latinas with nonmetastatic breast cancer within 1 year of diagnosis. Intrusive thoughts, four dimensions of social support (emotional/informational, tangible, affectionate, and positive social interaction), and symptoms of anxiety and depression were assessed through in-person interviews. Information on age, time since diagnosis, breast cancer variables, history of depression, and marital status served as covariates. Generalized linear models were used to investigate bivariate and multivariate associations and to explore moderation effects of the four dimensions of social support.ResultsIn bivariate models, intrusive thoughts were associated positively with depression (β = .024, .001) and anxiety (β = .047, P < .001) symptoms. Adjusting for other factors, intrusive thoughts remained associated with depression symptoms (β = .022, .008), regardless of level of social support (for all support dimensions). For anxiety, there were significant interactions of tangible (β = -.013, .034) and affectionate (β = -.022, .005) support with intrusive thoughts. Intrusive thoughts were associated more strongly with anxiety symptoms among women reporting less tangible and affectionate support than those with higher levels of these types of support.ConclusionsTangible and affectionate support have protective effects on anxiety symptoms among Spanish-speaking Latina breast cancer survivors experiencing intrusive thoughts, but not depression symptoms.
