Although workplace design and management are gaining more and more attention from modern organizations, workplace research is still very fragmented and spread across multiple disciplines in academia. Flooding is the number one natural disaster in the United States. While levees can help reduce the risk of flooding, they do not completely eliminate the residual risk in leveed areas. Chapter One discusses their socio-economic benefits and downsides, as well as why the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) require periodic levee inspections and evaluations. Chapter Two focuses on the Mississippi River levee system, which is one of the largest levee systems in the world, in order to better understand the levee-delta interaction and its impact on the loss of vast expanses of coastal land on deltas around the globe. Furthermore, the chapter examines the New Orleans levee system and its performance during Hurricane Katrina, to demonstrate how human-made changes to the Mississippi River delta natural environment amplified the effects of the storm. Chapter Three explores the basic principles of microbial fuel cells (MFCs) following the latest developments and the current state of research related to wastewater treatment in term of COD, nitrates, phosphates, sulphates and micro pollutants removal. The different factors affecting the MFCs performance treatment are also discussed. Chapter Four focuses on boron, an important element affecting bio-synthesis and cell metabolism, yet one that is harmful when it exceeds its critical limit. A model for the analysis of concentration polarization and the degree of rejection of boric acid, borate anions and monovalent ions is proposed. Chapter Five investigates the relationship between coral calcification rate and four different controlling factors: seawater pH, aragonite saturation state (Ùarag), temperature, and light intensity. Seawater temperature, pH, andÙarag are all being directly affected by the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide occurring. Chapter Six discusses pollution caused by mineral oil. The use of mineral oil in a great variety of products is a basic necessity for an industrialized country; however, the authors say we cannot turn our backs on the responsibilities for the incorrect use of this product, or the damage caused by dumping untreated mineral oil waste products into water bodies. In Chapter Seven, the results of geomorphological research in the Ejina Basin (Inner Mongolia) are presented with regard to identifying the main landforms and the contemporary geologic processes. Chapter Eight focuses on the study of geomorphology and landscape evolution in Namibia, southwestern Africa. The relationship between geomorphology and climate in Namibia reveals the degree and extent to which its landscapes are determined by changing environmental conditions. Finally, Chapter 9 is an analysis of the current global logging activities. Self-Determination Theory (SDT) is one of the most widely studied perspectives of human motivation. It has garnered the attention of prominent scholars and applied practitioners around the globe from a variety of disciplines such as business, healthcare, education, and sports. This book provides new research in the study of SDT. Chapter One provides a self-determination theory perspective on gender differences in pro-environmental behaviors. Chapter Two reviews a small body of literature regarding the study of college student athletes from a SDT perspective. Chapter Three explores relations between teaching qualifications and feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness towards medical teaching. Chapter Four uses the motivational typology in self-determination theory to explore the egoistic side of public service motivation. Chapter Five provides a historical overview of incentives and Operant Theory; explains how SDT developed in part as a reaction to the Operant paradigm of the mid-20th century; identifies nine faulty assumptions that led SDT astray; and introduces a relatively new construct, incentive salience, as a way to reconcile the observed compatibility between incentives and SDT. Chapter Six elucidates ethnic differences on depressive symptoms by examining the satisfaction of all three basic psychological needs as the underlying mechanism/mediator between ethnicity and depressive symptoms. The list of challenges facing nonhuman primates in the 21st century is a long one. The expansion of palm oil plantations to feed a growing consumer class is eating away at ape and monkey habitats in Southeast Asia and Central Africa. Lemurs are hunted for food in the poorest parts of Madagascar while monkeys are used as medicine in Brazil. Traditional cultural beliefs are maintaining demand for animal body parts in West African markets while viral YouTube videos of “cute” and “cuddly” lorises have increased their market value as pets and endangered their populations. This book is about politics and planning outside of cities, where urban political economy and planning theories do not account for the resilience of places that are no longer rural and where local communities work hard to keep from ever becoming urban. By examining exurbia as a type of place that is no longer simply rural or only tied to the economies of global resources (e.g., mining, forestry, and agriculture), we explore how changing landscapes are planned and designed not to be urban, that is, to look, function, and feel different from cities and suburbs in spite of new home development and real estate speculation. The book's authors contend that exurbia is defined by the persistence of rural economies, the conservation of rural character, and protection of natural ecological systems, all of which are critical components of the contentious local politics that seek to limit growth.Comparative political ecology is used as an organizing concept throughout the book to describe the nature of exurban areas in the U.S. and Australia, although exurbs are common to many countries. The essays each describe distinctive case studies, with each chapter using the key concepts of competing rural capitalisms and uneven environmental management to describe the politics of exurban change. This systematic analysis makes the processes of exurban change easier to see and understand. Based on these case studies, seven characteristics of exurban places are identified: rural character, access, local economic change, ideologies of nature, changes in land management, coalition-building, and land-use planning.This book will be of interest to those who study planning, conservation, and land development issues, especially in areas of high natural amenity or environmental value. For centuries, criminologists have looked for scientific ways to study, understand, and ultimately prevent crime. In this volume, a unique offense, poaching, is explored in various contexts to determine what opportunity structures favor this crime and how situational crime prevention may reduce its prevalence. The data sources used range from publically available secondary data about animal populations, to interviews with hunters, to actual law enforcement data collected inside protected areas. Various methods are utilized to look for patterns in poaching behaviour regarding where poachers strike, which species they target and their modus operandi. Collectively, the volume shows that principles of criminal opportunity theory and situational crime prevention are useful for studying and preventing poaching in a variety of contexts. The methods employed by each chapter are easily replicated and meant to stimulate empirical poaching research where data is available. While the theoretical grounding of this volume is drawn from criminology, it is written for a broad audience of academics, practitioners and those interested in wildlife conservation.

Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)• at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis­ semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 38 (thesis year 1993) a total of 13,787 thesis titles from 22 Canadian and 164 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor­ tant annual reference work. While Volume 38 reports theses submitted in 1993, on occasion, certain uni­ versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

The quest for higher performance digital systems for applications such as gen­ eral purpose computing, signal/image processing, and telecommunications and an increasing cost consciousness have led to a major thrust for high speed VLSI systems implemented in inexpensive and widely available technologies such as CMOS. This monograph, based on the first author's doctoral dissertation, con­ centrates on the technique of wave pipelining as one method toward achieving this goal. The primary focus of this monograph is to provide a coherent pre­ sentation of the theory of wave pipelined operation of digital circuits and to discuss practical design techniques for the realization of wave pipelined circuits in the CMOS technology. Wave pipelining can be applied to a variety of cir­ cuits for increased performance. For example, many architectures that support systolic computation lend themselves to wave pipelined realization. Also, the wave pipeline design methodology emphasizes the role of controlled clock skew in extracting enhanced performance from circuits that are not deeply pipelined. Wave pipelining (also known as maximal rate pipelining) is a timing method­ ology used in digital systems to increase the number of effective pipeline stages without increasing the number of physical registers in the pipeline. Using this technique, new data is applied to the inputs of a combinational logic block be­ fore the outputs due to previous inputs are available thus effectively pipelining the combinational logic and maximizing the utilization of the logic.
