Abstract

Multifunctional materials with working temperatures near room temperature are crucial for practical applications. Until now, it is still a great challenge to obtain such materials. In this paper, a complex of (C5NH13Cl)2MnBr4 (1) with a structural phase transition near room temperature is reported. The phase transition induces switchable magnetic properties, dielectric anomalies and luminescent response over the same range of temperatures. It is the first time the synergetic effect of magnetism, dielectricity and luminescence near room temperature have been observed in the same molecular complex. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

As the global market for Internet portal services expands, there is a growing interest in identifying corporate social responsibility considering the social influence and business characteristics of Internet portal operators. This study explores the diverse dimensions of CSR of IPOs, examines how CSR efforts affect CSR authenticity in each dimension, and investigates whether CSR authenticity mediates the effects of CSR efforts on corporate legitimacy. In addition, by setting the respondents' political orientation as the moderator, conditional indirect effect of CSR authenticity was further confirmed. An online survey was conducted on of Korean Naver users who actively use Internet portal services. Among the various CSR efforts of IPOs, strengthening of democratic contributions, universal service delivery, and consumer protection were shown to increase both cognitive and socio-political legitimacy through CSR authenticity. In particular, the effect of CSR efforts on cognitive legitimacy through perception of CSR authenticity was significantly higher in users with progressive political orientation. This study is significant in that it theoretically systematizes the CSR dimensions considering the complex business nature and business characteristics of IPOs and provides empirical results and implications for CSR activities that future IPOs should focus on, which can increase corporate legitimacy. Abstract

People today spend most of their time indoors; many use fragrances in closed restrooms and bathrooms at home and in public spaces for masking odors. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that are emitted from indoor fragrances have been reported in recent years to pose a risk to health. In this work, microneedle trap samplers (NTSs) were fabricated, packed with sulfonated divinylbenzene (SDVB) adsorbents, and used in passive mode to extract the VOCs that were emitted by bamboo diffusers in fragrance bottles in bathrooms. Instrumental analysis revealed that the main VOCs that were emitted from chemically synthesized fragrances were ethanol (19.2–40.5 ppb), propylene glycol (273.4–527.9 ppb), and 3-ethylbenzaldehyde (3.8–12.4 ppb). Lower indoor air change rates were associated with significantly higher emitted concentrations of VOCs. 3-Ethylbenzaldehyde is a strong respiratory irritant, and outdoor pollutants such as toluene, which escapes from paints, have a negative impact on indoor air quality. Abstract

Most solid tumors become stiff with progression of cancer. Cancer Associated Fibroblasts (CAFs), most abundant stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME), are known to mediate such stiffening. While the biochemical crosstalk between CAFs and cancer cells have been widely investigated, it is not clear if and how CAFs in stiffer TME promote metastatic progression. To gather insights into the process, we controlled the mechanical stiffness of the substrates and collected gene expression data with human colorectal CAFs. We cultured human primary CAFs on 2D polyacrylamide hydrogels with increasing elastic modulus (E) of 1, 10 and 40 kPa, and performed genome-wide transcriptome analyses in these cells to identify expression levels of ~16000 genes. The high-quality RNAseq results can be an excellent data-source for bioinformatic analysis for identifying novel pathways and biomarkers in cancer development and metastatic progression. With thorough analysis and accurate interpretation, this data may help researchers understand the role of mechanical stiffness of the TME in CAF-cancer cell crosstalk. Abstract

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a class of highly stable and closed-loop noncoding RNA that are involved in the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, little is known about the therapeutic role of circRNAs in HCC. We found that high circ_0058051 expression was negatively correlated with the prognosis of HCC patients. Circ_0058051 knockdown attenuated the proliferation and colony formation, meanwhile inhibited migration of HCC cells. Circ_0058051 may be used as a target for HCC gene therapy. We synthesized a novel small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery system, PEG-PCL-PEI-C14-SPIONs (PPPCSs), based on superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). PPPCSs protected the siRNA of circ_0058051 from degradation in serum and effectively delivered siRNA into SMMC-7721 cells. Meanwhile, intravenous injection of the PPPCSs/siRNA complex could inhibit tumor growth in the subcutaneous tumor model. In addition, the nanocomposite is not toxic to the organs of nude mice. The above results show that PPPCSs/si-circ_0058051 complex may provide a novel and promising method of HCC treatment. Graphical abstract

283. Comparison of piecewise structural equation modeling and Bayesian network for de novo construction of a quantitative adverse outcome pathway network

Abstract

Quantitative adverse outcome pathway network (qAOPN) is gaining momentum due to the predictive nature, alignment with quantitative risk assessment and great potential as a computational new approach methodology (NAM) to reduce laboratory animal tests. The present work aimed to demonstrate two advanced modeling approaches, piecewise structural equation modeling (PSEM) and Bayesian network (BN), for de novo qAOPN model construction based on routine ecotoxicological data. A previously published AOP network comprised of four linear AOPs linking excessive reactive oxygen species production to mortality in aquatic organisms was employed as a case study. The demonstrative case study intended to answer: Which linear AOP in the network contributed the most to the AO? Can any of the upstream KEs accurately predict the AO? What are the advantages and limitations of PSEM or BN in qAOPN development? The outcomes from the two approaches showed that both PSEM and Bayesian network were suitable for constructing a complex qAOPN based on limited experimental data. Besides quantification of response-response relationships, both approaches were capable of identifying the most influencing linear AOP in a complex network and evaluating the predictive ability of the AOP, albeit some discrepancies in predictive ability were identified for the two approaches using this specific dataset. The PROs and CONs of the two approaches for qAOPN construction were discussed in detail and suggestions on optimal workflows of PSEM and BN were provided to guide future qAOPN development.
