255. Single-pixel Computational Ghost Imaging With Helicity-dependent Metasurface Hologram

Abstract

Different optical imaging techniques are based on different characteristics of light. By controlling the abrupt phase discontinuities with different polarized incident light, a metasurface can host a phase-only and helicity-dependent hologram. In contrast, ghost imaging (GI) is an indirect imaging modality to retrieve the object information from the correlation of the light intensity fluctuations. We report single-pixel computational GI with a high-efficiency reflective metasurface in both simulations and experiments. Playing a fascinating role in switching the GI target with different polarized light, the metasurface hologram generates helicity-dependent reconstructed ghost images and successfully introduces an additional security lock in a proposed optical encryption scheme based on the GI. The robustness of our encryption scheme is further verified with the vulnerability test. Building the first bridge between the metasurface hologram and the GI, our work paves the way to integrate their applications in the fields of optical communications, imaging technology, and security. 269. Graphene decorated twin-core fiber Michelson interferometer for all-optical phase shifter and switch

Abstract

We investigated an all-optical phase shifter and switch based on a graphene decorated side-polished twin-core fiber (TCF) Michelson interferometer (MI). The MI was fabricated by tapering the splicing point between the TCF and single-mode fiber. The flat surface of exposed polished core in the TCF was coated with monolayer graphene. A 980 nm pump laser is used to produce a photothermal effect. The graphene’s ohmic heating changes the effective refractive index of the exposed core, resulting in the phase shift of the MI. The MI with a polished length of 5 mm has a significant modulation phase shift with a nearly linear slope of ${0.0102}\;\pi / {\rm mW}$0.0102π/mW near the wavelength of 1550 nm and can obtain an extinction ratio of 7 dB for optical switching with a rise (fall) time of 55.8 ms (15.5 ms). The high-density integration and all-optical control enable the proposed device to have great potential in the miniaturization of optical devices and all-optical signal processing.

Abstract

The phase behavior and phase composition of TBP-kerosene/ H3PO4-H2O three-phase extraction system have been "inves-tigated and compared with the two-phase system without the diluent. In TBP-kerosene/H3PO4-H2O system, the formation of the third phase is related only to the equilibrium concentration of H3PO4 in the bottom (aqueous) phase (CH3 PO4, b > 9.8 mol/L). The composition of the middle phase is not a function of only the CH3PO4, b, but also relates to the initial concentration of TBP. At CH3PO4 = 9.8 mol/L, the composition of the extracted complex in the middle phase is (TBP)·(H3PO4)·(H2O)0.5, which is the same as that of the organic phase in two-phase system. *This work has been supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (29971020) and the Natural Science Foundation of Shandong Province (L2000B01).

Abstract

The extraction behavior and phase behavior of TOPO (or TRPO)–kerosene/H 2 SO 4 –Ti(IV) systems have been investigated. Stable colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs) have been prepared by using the organic phase loaded Ti(IV) as the inner phase. Under favorable hydrolysis conditions, a porous spherical TiO 2 has been obtained after the hydrolysis of Ti(IV) in the inner phase of CLAs.

Abstract

Terahertz radiation refers to a broad electromagnetic spectrum range between microwave and infrared waves, which is also known as the terahertz gap due to inadequate materials and technologies for its generation and manipulation. Atomically thin two dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene, black phosphorus (BP) and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) provide a powerful platform for manipulation of the propagation and detection of terahertz waves. Furthermore, hybrid metamaterials that feature the combination of artificially engineered metamaterials and 2D materials greatly facilitate the dynamic modulation or manipulation of THz radiation towards novel terahertz applications. Herein, we review recent progress in 2D materials in the terahertz domain and hybrid metamaterials with engineered functionalities through the incorporation of graphene, TMDs and BP. The emerging THz devices based on the modulation, nonlinearity, filtering, and plasmonics of 2D materials and metamaterials will be highlighted, and a brief discussion with perspectives and the remaining challenges will be concluded. Abstract

The very sensitive adsorptive complex catalytic wave of Ge(IV)-catechol-NaBrO 3 with acetic acid—sodium acetate as supporting electrolyte in linear-sweep polarography has been successfully applied to the determination of germanium in vegetables and soils. The optimum experimental conditions are: 0.07 M acetic acid—sodium acetate buffer of pH 4.6, 1.5 × 10 −3 M catechol and 0.1 M NaBrO 3 . The detection limit of Ge(IV) is 1.0 × 10 −9 M and the linear range is 1.0 × 10 −9 −7.0 × 10 −6 M. Different acid digestion procedures were compared, and a HNO 3 -HClO 4 -HF digestion method for the soil sample and a HNO 3 -HClO 4 -H 2 SO 4 digestion method for the vegetable sample were adopted. The experiments show that the polarographic wave behaves as an adsorptive complex wave and also as a parallel catalytic wave.

Abstract

Efficient power distribution to multiple receivers with controlled amounts is critical for wireless communication and sensing systems. Previous efforts have attempted to improve power transfer efficiency through strong coupling and parity‐time (PT) symmetry, providing attractive opportunities for flexible energy flow control. In this study, a novel method for achieving arbitrary power distribution is proposed and numerically demonstrated by leveraging the unique properties inside an epsilon near‐zero (ENZ) environment. Specifically, it shows that the power from a single source can be transferred to multiple receivers inside an ENZ medium with negligible loss by modifying optical properties of receivers rather than introducing sophisticated active control modules. Importantly, full power transfer is independent of the size and shape of the ENZ medium, as well as the positions of the receivers and source. A realizable system is further designed with effective zero index at microwave frequencies to confirm the high efficiency of energy transfer. The innovative approach, employing photonic doping for advanced and efficient wireless power transfer, may shed light on the new generation of energy efficient communication/sensing systems with versatile control functionalities. 289. Graph-regularized concept factorization for multi-view document clustering.

Abstract

We propose a novel multi-view document clustering method with the graph-regularized concept factorization (MVCF). MVCF makes full use of multi-view features for more comprehensive understanding of the data and learns weights for each view adaptively. It also preserves the local geometrical structure of the manifolds for multi-view clustering. We have derived an efficient optimization algorithm to solve the objective function of MVCF and proven its convergence by utilizing the auxiliary function method. Experiments carried out on three benchmark datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of MVCF in comparison to several state-of-the-art approaches in terms of accuracy, normalized mutual information and purity. 290. Computational Mechanisms of Pulse-Coupled Neural Networks: A Comprehensive Review.

Abstract

Pulse-coupled neural networks (PCNN) have an inherent ability to process the signals associated with the digital visual images because it is inspired from the neuronal activity in the primary visual area, V1, of the neocortex. This paper provides insight into the internal operations and behaviors of PCNN, and reveals the way how PCNN achieves good performance in digital image processing. The various properties of PCNN are categorized into a novel three-dimensional taxonomy for image processing mechanisms. The first dimension specifies the time matrix of PCNN, the second dimension captures the firing rate of PCNN, and the third dimension is the synchronization of PCNN.
