In this study, we have examined the respective roles of androgens and prolactin (Prl) on rat prostate development and function. Hypophysectomized immature rats, castrated or not after hypophysectomy and treated or not with a 5α-reductase inhibitor, were used to study the different aspects of Prl action on the rat prostate and its synergy with androgens in vivo. Using Northern blot analysis and quantitation of prostatic mRNAs, we have shown that Prl significantly increases the steady-state levels of transcripts coding for several lobe-specific proteins: the C3 subunit of prostatein, probasin, and RWB. We have confirmed these observations in vitro, on explants of immature rat prostate treated with either saline, Prl, or testosterone. In addition, we have demonstrated by a nuclear run-on assay that Prl significantly enhances the transcription rate of the C3 gene in the rat prostate. We conclude that the effects of Prl concern all lobes of the organ and are, at least in part, androgen-independent. Moreover, Prl is able, via an androgen-independent pathway, to increase the rate of transcription of the C3 gene, one of the major products of the rat prostate.

We report a case of Sweet's syndrome in a patient in whom an acute myeloblastic leukemia was subsequently diagnosed. Approximately 10-20% of the reported cases of Sweet's syndrome occur in patients with a malignancy, the neoplastic condition most commonly reported being acute myelogenous leukemia. This case is of interest because of its unusual clinical presentation: the cutaneous lesions were accompanied by a massive swelling of the tongue. We suggest that this sudden macroglossia was caused by an infiltration of mature neutrophils, as seen in cutaneous lesions of Sweet's syndrome. There have been several reports recently of extracutaneous manifestations of Sweet's syndrome, and neutrophilic infiltrates have been found both in several internal organs and at mucosal locations.

This paper reviews ventilation, drainage and protection as Eustachian tube functions which influence the middle ear. The most frequent etiologic factors which cause disorders of these functions and possible consequences on the middle ear are illustrated. The paper also reviews classification of the degree of Eustachian tube ventilation disorders, the most frequent causes of its dysfunction, as well as methods which are used for checking Eustachian tube ventilation.

The authors report their own longtime experience with the incidence of pediatric otitis with allergic etiology. They conclude that pediatric otitis, especially the secretory type, is not always curable by the common conservative antibiotic therapy because in many cases the primary cause of the disease is not the infection but allergy. The infection in such cases is a secondary, accompanying complication. The suggestion has been supported by the statistical data. Moreover reviewed are the diagnostic methods and therapy they have applied.

The authors review their experiences in the treatment of secretory otitis in children. They detected a significantly higher number of positive allergometric tests to standard groups of inhalation allergens than expected. The patients were divided into two groups; in the first group the allergometric test was negative, in the second positive. The therapeutical approach was identical, consisting of the initial medicamentous treatment which did not give any results. After this, adenoidectomy, paracentesis with secretion aspiration and aeration tube implantation were performed in general endotracheal anesthesia. The comparison of the results of the treatment showed that allergic disease, being one of the etiological factors, significantly influence the course of the treatment as well as the prognosis of the disease. It has been concluded that allergy, an etiological cause of chronic secretory otitis in children, should be given a special regard to help an adequate approach to the phenomenon.

The study reports two patients with very rare tumors, rhabdomyosarcomas. The first case was a six-year-old girl with tumor in the right nostril and epipharynx, the second was a 66-year-old male patient with protuberances in the hypopharynx. The diagnosis was based on the PH analysis. One case was treated with air therapy, the other was surgically treated. Both died soon after, the fact that points to an enormous malignant potential and unfavorable prognosis for the diseased.

The kinetics of the catalytic oxidation of carbon monoxide on a Pt surface $$CO{}^{(g)}+\frac{1}{2}O_2^{(g)}\xrightarrow[{surface}]{{Pt}}CO_2^{(g)}$$ (1) has recently been investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. S namjerom da utvrdimo precipitirajuće faktore psorijazc i psorijatičkog artritisa, ispitali smo 93 ispitanika, 64 muškarca i 29 žena. sa s igurnom dijagnozom psorijatičnog artritisa. Prosječna dob bolesnica u vrijeme pregleda bila je -+8,5 godina a muškaraca 44,5 godina. Precipirajuće faktore psorijaze i psorijatičnog artritisa utvrdili smo svega u ll ispitanika (11,8%) muškog i ženskog spola; u 6 ispitanika (6,5 cf.) (.~ žene i 3 muškarca) za psorijazu i u 5 ispitanika (5,4%) (samo mu~karci) za psorijatični artritis. Kao precipitirajući faktori utvrđeni su stres, trauma, bolest i trudnoća. Analizom životne dobi 93 ispitanika u vrijeme pojave psorijaze utvrdili smo da je učestalost njenog javljanja podjednaka u dobi od 10. do 49. godine života. U tom razdoblju psorijaza se pojavila u 78 bolesnika (83,9). Medutim, treba naglasiti da se u žena najčešće javila u dobi od 10. do 19. godina (31 %.). Od psorijatičnog artritisa najviše bolesnika je oboljelo u dohi od 20. do 49. godina života (77% ). Žena su najvge oboljevale u dobi od 30. do 49. godine (55iif.), muškarci od 20. do 49. godine (82,8%), a posebno u dobi od 40. do 49. godine života (37,9%)., Intending to discover precipitating factors in psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, we have examined 93cases, 64 ma les and 29 females with the certain diagnosis ofpsoriatic arthritis. An average age of female patients, during th~ pe riod of examination, was 48,5 years and of male patients 44,5 years. We have discovered precipitating factors of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis in ll cases (11,8%), both male and female., in 6 examined cases (6.5%) (3 female and 3 male) for psoriasis and in 5 examined cases (5,49t) (only mal es) fo r psoriatic arthritis. Stress, trauma, illness and pregnancy were discovered as preci pita ting factors.
