Memories of headhunting, and ritual re-enactments of those former violent practices, are still politically meaningful in contemporary Oceania and Southeast Asia. The case of the Sejiq of Taiwan illustrates how such practices were transformed and eventually terminated as a result of colonialism and the incorporation of formerly stateless peoples into new political institutions. Headhunting was once an expression of the sacred law of Gaya, as both a reinforcement of territorial boundaries and a way of settling legal disputes within communities. It expressed tensions in a ‘reverse dominance hierarchy’ by which some men tried to consolidate political power, but were usually deterred by a strong egalitarian ethos. During the period of Japanese administration (1895–1945), new technologies made headhunting more efficient, but it became more difficult for this formerly egalitarian people to avoid the political coercion of would-be leaders. Contradictions between headhunting as the implementation of Gaya and headhunting as a consolidation of political power — itself viewed as a violation of that Law — eventually led to the abandonment of headhunting. Local leaders found new ways to seek political power, including in the ritual re-enactment of the very same practices used by their ancestors, but continue to be resisted by ordinary people with an egalitarian ethos.

The World Social Forum, with its goals of grassroots democracy and ecological sustainability, has been slow to take roots in the Chinese-speaking world. This research note describing the first Social Forum in Taiwan shows how the Social Forum is rooted in local networks and struggles. Due to the authoritarian regime on the Chinese mainland, there is little hope for a Social Forum there in the near future.

Each year the Ernest Hemingway Foundation and PEN New England award the PEN Hemingway prize for the year’s best first work of fiction. The award is presented at a gala reception at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston, Massachusetts. The 2014 PEN Hemingway prize was awarded to NoViolet Bulawayo for her book, We Need New Names (Back Bay Books). This year we are pleased to present remarks offered by Scott Simon at the luncheon preceding the award ceremony. Simon is a noted American journalist and host of Weekend Edition Saturday on National Public Radio.

In this article, I look at state-indigenous relations in local elections in Taiwan. In studying elections, one learns about the dialogic relationship between indigenous groups and the state as well as about the minideals that constitute the social contract. Elections have become a part of indigenous life, even as they introduce new forms of political actors to a formerly egalitarian society. Repeated elections permit parties and state actors to negotiate deals with local individuals, groups, and factions. The electoral system, however, does not contribute to indigenous nationalism. It may even detract from its legitimacy if voters perceive indigenism as merely a campaign strategy.

The use of ultra high strength steels (UHSS) in the automotive industry presents a significant opportunity for continued vehicle light-weighting, due to possible strength-to-weight improvements of three to four times that of conventional sheet steel grades. This performance benefit is achievable whist maintaining most of the advantages of low-cost mass-production associated with the cold stamping of sheet steel for automotive body components. However, the introduction of UHSS can result in significantly increased wear of the stamping tools, which is difficult to predict at the design stage and can lead to unexpected process failure during mass-production. Therefore, there is a need to be able to monitor and predict the onset of severe wear, such that the best course of condition-based maintenance can be scheduled and unscheduled stoppages due to tool wear eradicated. This paper describes a novel active monitoring system that is being developed by researchers at Deakin University, The Australian National University and Ford Motor Company, Asia Pacific and Africa. The aim of the active monitoring system is to detect the initial onset of a change of state, such as wear, through the measurement of variables such as punch force and audio signals. A semi-industrial stamping process, using a progressive die setup and high strength steel sheet with hardened tool steel tooling, is the experimental basis for the initial model and system development.

Purpose: Some conventional serological assays can accurately quantify neutralising antibody responses raised against epitopes on virus glycoproteins, enabling mass vaccine evaluation and serosurveillance studies to take place. However, these assays often necessitate the handling of wild-type virus in expensive high biosafety laboratories, which restricts the scope of their application, particularly in resource-deprived areas. A solution to this issue is the use of lentiviral pseudotype viruses (PVs)—chimeric, replication-deficient virions that imitate the binding and entry mechanisms of their wild-type equivalents. Pseudotype virus neutralisation assays (PVNAs) bypass high biosafety requirements and yield comparable results to established assays. This study explores the potential for using lyophilisation of pseudotypes as a cost-effective, alternative means for production, distribution and storage of a PVNAbased diagnostic kit. Methods & Materials: Rabies, Marburg and H5 subtype Influenza virus pseudotypes were each suspended in cryoprotectant solutions of various molarities and subjected to freeze-drying before incubation at a variety of temperatures, humidities and time periods. Samples were then employed in antibody neutralisation assays using specific sera. Results: High levels of PV titre were retained post-lyophilisation, with acceptable levels of virus activity maintained even after medium-term storage in tropical conditions. Also, the performance of PVs in neutralisation assays was not affected by the lyophilisation process. Conclusion: These results confirm the viability of a freeze-dried PVNA-based diagnostic kit, which could considerably facilitate in-field serology for a number of clinically important viruses.

Throughout the world, national identities are inscribed on communities through the construction of social space. Although the identity of Taiwan-as Chinese versus Formosan-has been contested for the past fifty years, the struggles over space and memory have become increasingly visible since the lifting of martial law in 1987. This article, a product of five years of field research in Taiwan, is an attempt to read some ways in which so-called Native Taiwanese have begun to inscribe a non-Chinese identity on social space in Taipak and beyond. In particular, I focus on how struggles for control over social memory have played out in the transformation of Taipak's New Park into a memorial for the Massacre of February 28. Although it is only one social field on which the struggle for Taiwanese identity is fought, New Park has become one of the major points of contention between ethnic groups on the island.

These individuals built upon the previous insights of the others to bring group therapy into a more contemporary sphere. They include Dreikurs, Foulkes, Corsini and Rosenberg, Slavson, Berne, Rogers, Yalom and Lieberman, Rioch, Horwitz, and Ormont.

The beginning of this chapter and book takes the reader through the importance of the circle in relation to group therapy. It is followed by the important contributors of this wonderful paradigm, group therapy, from 1895–1943. Inclusive of these contributors are brief summaries from the writings of LeBon, Pratt, Freud, Burrows, Wender, Moreno, and Bion.
