Condensation trails (contrails) are one of the most visible anthropogenic effects on the climate system. They are formed by high-flying airliners and can evolve into contrail cirrus under specific conditions. The present thesis is focusing on these anthropogenic clouds and we propose a completion of the contrail formation theory. For this purpose a thermodynamic engine model has been developed to validate this theory in the case of 109 real engines. Also an analysis is performed showing the validity of the approximations used for modern day engines, but revealing that the theory might need to be adapted for future engines with very high efficiencies and lower cruising speeds. In order to analyze the impact of contrail-cirrus in Europe a parameterization to be used in regional climate models has been developed. Regional models feature a more detailed cloud microphysics and a higher resolution than global models and are deemed thus more appropriate for this study. This parameterization has been applied to the Climate version of the Lokal Modell (CLM). An increase in high-level cloudiness of 2.8 % over the whole of Europe for the period 2000-2009 was simulated, with a maximum of over 6 % in Central Europe where air-traffic is highest. In this region the total additional cirrus cloud coverage from spreading contrails is simulated to be six times higher than the coverage of linear contrails. Limiting the production of these artificial clouds should be addressed by a climate policy. The Kyoto mechanisms use carbon dioxide as common measure for different gases. In this framework the present thesis shows that the total effect of aviation is 1.8 (very likely 1.0-2.9) times higher than the effect of CO2 emissions by the sector. This figure is however shown to be strongly dependent on the chosen way of comparison. An idea on how to include the mitigation of contrail-cirrus in a climate-policy, takinginto account the associated scientific uncertainty rounds off the dissertation, Les traînées de condensation constituent une des influences anthropiques la plus visible sur le système climatique. Pour analyser l’impact des nuages cirrus engendrés par les traînées de condensation au-dessus de l’Europe, une paramétrisation a été développée pour un modèle climatique régional. Ce type de modèle présente une microphysique des nuages plus détaillée et une résolution plus haute que dans les modèles globaux ce qui est approprié pour cette étude. Cette paramétrisation a été appliquée au modèle Climate version of the Lokal Modell (CLM). Une augmentation de la nébulosité haute de 2.8% en moyenne sur toute l’Europe pendant la période 2000-2009 a été simulée avec un maximum de 6% au-dessus de l’Europe centrale où le trafic aérien est le plus dense. Dans cette région la couverture additionnelle des traînées de condensation persistantes simulée est six fois plus importante que la couverture due aux traînées seules. Limiter la production de ces nuages artificiels devrait être adressé dans le cadre d’une politique climatique. The April-May, 2010 volcanic eruptions of Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland caused significant economic and social disruption in Europe whilst state of the art measurements and ash dispersion forecasts were heavily criticized by the aviation industry. Here we demonstrate for the first time that large improvements can be made in quantitative predictions of the fate of volcanic ash emissions, by using an inversion scheme that couples a priori source information and the output of a Lagrangian dispersion model with satellite data to estimate the volcanic ash source strength as a function of altitude and time. From the inversion, we obtain a total fine ash emission of the eruption of 8.3 +/- 4.2 Tg for particles in the size range of 2.8-28 mu m diameter. We evaluate the results of our model results with a posteriori ash emissions using independent ground-based, airborne and space-borne measurements both in case studies and statistically. Subsequently, we estimate the area over Europe affected by volcanic ash above certain concentration thresholds relevant for the aviation industry. We find that during three episodes in April and May, volcanic ash concentrations at some altitude in the atmosphere exceeded the limits for the "Normal" flying zone in up to 14% (6-16%), 2% (1-3%) and 7% (4-11%), respectively, of the European area. For a limit of 2 mg m(-3) only two episodes with fractions of 1.5% (0.2-2.8%) and 0.9% (0.1-1.6%) occurred, while the current "No-Fly" zone criterion of 4 mg m(-3) was rarely exceeded. Our results have important ramifications for determining air space closures and for real-time quantitative estimations of ash concentrations. Flugzeugwirbelschleppen leben neueren Beobachtungen zufolge deutlich länger als zumeist angenommen. Nachfolgende Flugzeuge, die in die Wirbelschleppe gelangen, erfahren ein Rollmoment, welches von der Deformation der Wirbel abhängt. Daher wird in dieser Arbeit mit Grobstruktursimulationen (LES) die Dynamik von Wirbelschleppen in der turbulenten und geschichteten Atmosphäre untersucht. Insbesondere wurde ein Verfahren entwickelt, welches den Verlauf der Wirbelkernlinie präzise identifiziert und daraus erstmalig die Krümmung dieser Linie abschnittsweise ermittelt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass sich die mittleren Krümmungsradien von Einzelwirbeln vor der Ringbildung bis zu einer Größenordnung des ursprünglichen Wirbelabstands reduzieren, und danach wieder größer werden können. Das zu erwartende Rollmoment eines nachfolgenden Flugzeugs wird abgeschätzt. Insbesondere Vergleiche mit Feldmessungen aus dem EU-Projekt AWIATOR bestätigen die hier gefundenen Ergebnisse., Aircraft wake vortices have been observed to often live much longer than expected. Following aircraft encountering the wake vortices experience a rolling moment which depends on the deformation of the vortices. With the help of Large-Eddy Simulations (LES), this work investigates the dynamics of wake vortices in a turbulent and stratified atmosphere. Particularly, a method was developed which precisely determines the vortex core line. For the first time, the curvature of that line was analysed in sections. The results show that before linking, mean curvature radii of the vortices reduce to the size of one initial vortex spacing. They may grow afterwards. The expected rolling moment of following aircraft is estimated. In particular, the comparison with field measurement data obtained within the EU project AWIATOR confirms the presented results.
