Aim: We aimed to investigate how bilateral renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) damage affects the ovaries as a distant organ and the effects of melatonin (MEL), curcumin (CUR) and melatonin+curcumin (MEL+CUR) treatments on I/R damage. Material and Method: 42 female Wistar rats were used in the study. Rats were divided into 6 groups and study was designed as follows: Control group (G1) – opening and closing the abdomen only (sham surgery group) –, I/R group (G2) – 45 min ischemia followed by 2 h reperfusion –, I/R+MEL group (G3) – 45 min ischemia, intraperitoneal (i.p) 20 mg/kg MEL injection 5 min before reperfusion, followed by 2 h reperfusion –, I/R+CUR group (G4) – 45 min ischemia, 5 min before reperfusion i.p 200 mg/kg CUR injection and then 2 hours reperfusion –, I/R+MEL+CUR group (G5) – 45 min ischemia, 5 min before reperfusion i.p 20 mg/kg MEL and 200 mg/kg CUR injection, followed by 2 hours reperfusion –. At the end of the reperfusion period, the rats were sacrificed. Right ovaries were removed from the peritoneum and fixed. After fixation and follow-up, tissue sections were stained with hematoxylin&eosin (H&E), Periodic acid-Schiff (PAS)+Hematoxylin (PAS+H) and Masson’s trichrome stains. Pathological changes were scored and statistically evaluated. Results: Compared to the control group, there was a decrease in hemorrhage, vascular congestion, follicular degeneration, inflammation, interstitial edema, vasodilation and growing follicle numbers in all groups; these changes were severe in the G2 group; Mild to moderate severity was observed in the G3, G4 and G5 groups. Conclusion: Renal I/R damage significantly affects the ovaries histopathologically. MEL, CUR, and MEL+CUR partially preserve the histological structure, but MEL treatment seems to be more effective than CUR treatment.

We investigated how proanthocyanidin treatment altered c-Jun N-terminal kinases, transforming growth factor beta 1, serine/threonine-specific protein kinase, interleukin 1 beta and insulin-like 3 expression in the testis of diabetic rats. We used 24 Wistar albino male rats divided into four groups. Group 1 was untreated control. Group 2 was treated with 40 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) for 5 days. Group 3 was treated with 40 mg/kg STZ + 250 mg/kg proanthocyanidin once daily for six weeks. Group 4 was treated with 40 mg/kg STZ + 250 mg/kg proanthocyanidin. Superoxide dismutase activity was reduced in groups 3 and 4 compared to group 2. Glutathione peroxidase activity was increased significantly in groups 3 and 4 compared to groups 1 and 2. Catalase activity was decreased in group 4 compared to group 2. We found that proanthocyanidin increased cell proliferation in diabetic testis. Phospho-JNK and TGF-β1 immunostaining was decreased groups 3 and 4 compared to group 2, while p-Akt immunostaining was increased in groups 3 and 4. The number of IL-1β immunostained cells in groups 3 and 4 was decreased compared to group 2. INSL-3 immunostaining was increased significantly in group 3 compared to group 2. Our findings indicate that proanthocyanidin ameliorated diabetes related testicular dysfunction. Proanthocyanidin contributes to a balanced oxidant-antioxidant status, and balanced proliferation and apoptosis activity in the germinal cells.

AMAÇ: Adölesan ve erişkin gebelerde hemoglobin, nötrofil/lenfosit oranı, platelet/lenfosit oranı değerlerinin fetal doğum ağırlığı ile olan ilişkisinin değerlendirilmesi ve her iki grubun birbiri ile karşılaştırılarak anne yaşının bu değerler üzerine etkisinin araştırılmasıdır. GEREÇ VE YÖNTEM: Çalışmaya kliniğimizde doğum yapmış, canlı, tekil gebeliği olan adölesan ve erişkin hastalar dahil edilmiştir. Dosyalarından sosyodemografik ve obstetrik bilgilerine ve ikinci trimestera ait hemogram parametrelerine ulaşılmıştır. Fetal doğum ağırlığı, hemoglobin, nötrofil, lenfosit, platelet değerleri kaydedilmiş ve nötrofil/lenfosit, platelet/lenfosit oranları hesaplanmıştır. Bu değerlerin adölesan ve erişkin gebelerdeki durumu ve fetal ağırlık ile olan ilişkisi değerlendirilmiştir. BULGULAR: Erişkin grupta fetal doğum ağırlığı ve hemoglobin değerleri adölesan gruba göre anlamlı düzeyde daha yüksek, nötrofil, platelet ve nötrofil/lenfosit değerleri ise anlamlı düzeyde düşük bulunmuştur. İki grup arasında lenfosit ve platelet/lenfosit değerleri açısından anlamlı bir fark tespit edilmemiştir. Gebelerin yaş gruplarına göre fetal ağırlık ve kan parametreleri ilişkisi incelendiğinde her iki grupta da gebelerin hemoglobin değeri arttıkça fetal ağırlığın arttığı ve nötrofil, platelet, nötrofil/lenfosit, platelet/lenfosit değerleri arttıkça fetal ağırlığın azaldığı görülmüştür. Lenfosit değerleriyle fetal ağırlık arasında anlamlı bir ilişki saptanmamıştır. SONUÇ: Adölesan gebeler anemi, düşük doğum ağırlığı gibi obstetrik komplikasyonlar açısından daha yüksek risk altındadır. Tüm yaş gruplarında aneminin erken tanısı ve tedavisi fetal gelişim açısından önemlidir. Maternal inflamasyon fetal gelişimi olumsuz etkilemektedir. Nötrofil/lenfosit oranı ve platelet/lenfosit oranı inflamasyonun erken tespitine ve tedavisine dolayısı ile komplikasyonların engellenmesine yardımcı olabilecek markerlardır.

The cornerstones of an efficient circular waste management strategy aiming for enhanced resource efficiency are maximizing organic waste valorization and improving residual conversion to biochemicals. In this regard, this study focuses on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from the effluent of fungi biomass cultivation on low-grade residues from the potato starch industry with batch and semi-continuous membrane bioreactors (MBRs) containing the effluent of already fermented potato protein liquor (FPPL) inoculated with chicken and cow manure. The effect of pH in the batch experiments on the production and yield of VFAs during acidogenic digestion was evaluated. Rapid generation of VFAs at a concentration of up to 11.8 g/L could be successfully achieved in the MBR. Under the optimal conditions, a high yield of 0.65 g VFAs/g VSfed was obtained for the organic loading rate (OLR) of 1 g VS/L/d using FPPL substrate and chicken manure as inoculum. The results show that the application of sequential multi-step bioconversion of potato starch industry residues has the potential to increase the variety of value-added products generated from a single organic residue while enhancing nutrient recovery capacity.

Bu çalışmada, edinilmiş nörojenik kekemeliğin epidemiyolojisi, patofizyolojisi, tanı, değerlendirme ve terapisi ile ilgili bilgileri sentezleyerek gelecekteki araştırmalara ve klinik alana katkıda bulunulması amaçlanmıştır. İncelemede geleneksel derleme metodu kullanılmış, bu kapsamda; nörojenik kekemeliğin tanımlanması, insidansı, etiyolojisi, altta yatan mekanizmalar, ayırt edici özellikleri, değerlendirme ve terapisine ilişkin literatür incelemesi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Etiyolojisine göre ayrılan nörojenik kekemelik, edinilmiş kekemeliğin alt sınıflamasında yer almaktadır. Nörojenik kekemeliğin, çeşitli nörolojik hasar veya hastalık nedeniyle ortaya çıkan edinilmiş konuşma bozukluğu olarak tanımlandığı görülmüştür. Konuşma akışını ve ritmini bozacak bir şekilde, seslerde veya hecelerde tekrarlama, uzatma veya bunların blok şeklinde üretilmesi ile karakterize edilmiştir. Nörojenik kekemeliğin yaygın nedenleri arasında inme ve travmatik beyin hasarı yer almaktadır. Nörojenik kekemeliğin patofizyolojik mekanizması tam olarak açıklanamamıştır. Bu bozukluk, diğer dil ve konuşma bozuklukları ile benzer özellikler taşır veya bir arada görülebilir. Dolayısı ile bu bozukluğa ve ayırıcı tanıya yönelik detaylı bir değerlendirme yapılması terapi planını oluşturmaya yardımcı olacaktır. Nörojenik kekemeliğin değerlendirmesinde vaka geçmişi, vakanın dil, sesletim, bilişsel ve motor becerileri, konuşmasının akıcısızlık ve diğer özellikleri ile kekemeliğine dair tutumu gibi birçok alan detaylı bir şekilde ele alınmalıdır. Terapisinde; kişiden kişiye farklı etki gösterebilecek, akıcılığı iyileştirmeye ve hıza odaklanan çeşitli dil ve konuşma terapisi stratejilerinden yararlanılmasının optimum fayda sağlayacağı düşünülmektedir.

Through the fast-paced global economy, our planet witnesses worsening records on global warming, ecological deterioration, and biodiversity losses each year. While ‘over’ or even ‘hyper’ consumption is experienced in various, especially in the developed parts of the world, resources are being depleted to meet infinite desires rather than basic needs. The growth in population and consumption is expected to further deplete natural resources and aggravate excessive waste generation. Behind the scenes, as one of the triggering strategies of this excessive and continuous consumption, planned obsolescence, which has been widely employed since the 1929 Great Depression, remains a prevalent strategy in practice. With the aim to draw attention to this hidden and well-established strategy, this study examines the planned obsolescence issue and its practices, seeks to answer why planned obsolescence poses a threat to environmental security, whilst evaluates the effectiveness of the recent EU policies and actions to tackle this issue.

Listeria monocytogenes menenjiti, yaşlı veya bağışıklığı baskılanmış hastalarda görülür ve yüksek mortaliteye neden olabilir. Hidrosefali, L.monocytogenes meningoensefalitinin ciddi bir komplikasyonudur. Uygunsuz ampirik antimikrobiyal tedavi ve hidrosefali gelişimi, mortalite ile ilişkili ana bağımsız prognostik faktörlerdir. L.monocytogenes, özellikle bağışıklığı baskılanmış hastalarda menenjit ve bakteriyemi etkeni olabilir. L.monocytogenes’in akut hidrosefali ve yüksek mortaliteye sebep olabileceği unutulmamalıdır. Olgumuz; 58 yaşında kadın hastaydı ve otoimmün hepatit tanısı ile öncesinde kortikosteroid kullanmaktaydı. İki gündür bilinç bulanıklığı ve ateş şikayeti ile hastaneye başvurdu. Akut hidrosefali ile komplike olan L. monocytogenes’e bağlı menenjit tanısıyla yoğun bakımda izlemi yapıldı. Hasta yoğun bakım takibinin 21. gününde ve mekanik ventilatör desteğinin 16. gününde kaybedildi. L.monocytogenes, özellikle immünosupresif hastalarda menenjit ve bakteriyemi etkeni olabilir. Yaşlı veya bağışıklığı baskılanmış hastalarda Listeria akılda tutulmalı ve Listeria için etkin ampirik tedavilere başlanmalıdır. Tedaviye rağmen kliniği kötüleşen hastalarda akut hidrosefali akılda tutulmalıdır.

Objectives: The long-term consequences of COVID-19 infection on the gastrointestinal tract remain unclear. Here, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of gastrointestinal symptoms and post-COVID-19 disorders of gut-brain interaction after hospitalisation for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Design: GI-COVID-19 is a prospective, multicentre, controlled study. Patients with and without COVID-19 diagnosis were evaluated on hospital admission and after 1, 6 and 12 months post hospitalisation. Gastrointestinal symptoms, anxiety and depression were assessed using validated questionnaires. Results: The study included 2183 hospitalised patients. The primary analysis included a total of 883 patients (614 patients with COVID-19 and 269 controls) due to the exclusion of patients with pre-existing gastrointestinal symptoms and/or surgery. INTRODUCTION: To evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Sialorrhea Clinical Scale for Parkinson’s disease (SCS-PD) for use in clinical settings. METHODS: The original English version of SCS-PD has been adapted to Turkish (SCS-TR) in accordance with international guidelines. Forty-one patients with Parkinson’s Disease (PD) and 31 healthy people were included in our study. SCS-TR, Movement Disorders Society United Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) Part II (functional subscale 2.2 Saliva and drooling), Drooling Frequency and Severity Scale (DFSS) and The Non-Motor Symptoms Questionnaire (NMSQ) (1st question evaluating saliva) were applied to both groups. The main claim of the study is that the RF misjudged the possibilities and capabilities of its own and the Ukrainian Armed Forces, neglected most of the principles of war in the planning and execution of the military operation, and as a result, it was not as successful as expected in the first phase of its military operation.

Over the past decades, the anaerobic digestion (AD) process has been employed as a potential medium to produce valuable resources from the waste-based feedstock. Moreover, the use of AD technology can generate not only resources, but it also creates an avenue for useful chemicals recovery to further use in commercial purpose, which is a part of the circular economy consortium. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are one of the most precious chemical feedstock that can be recovered from anaerobically digested effluent through the use of a pressure-driven membrane filtration process. In an effort to improve the recovery percentages of VFAs from anaerobically digested effluent, this study proposed a sustainable pathway by reusing the permeate effluent in the nanofiltration process. For this purpose, particles free feed solution was produced using the ultrafiltration process and sequentially subjected to the nanofiltration process in the presence of a 200-300 Da nanofiltration membrane. Each permeate was mixed with a known amount of fresh feed and continues up to 3 cycles to be improved the recovery percentages of total VFAs concentrations. Results indicated that recycling strategies could be a potential way to modulate the concentration of VFAs compounds.

İklim değişikliğinin önlenmesinde ve karbondioksit emisyonlarının azaltılmasında karbon vergisi önemli bir politika aracıdır. Karbon vergisinin uygulanmasının ana nedeni özellikle karbondioksit emisyonlarının azaltılması gibi çevresel iyileştirme amaçlarına ulaşmanın yanı sıra ekonomik etkinlik sağlamaktır. Bu bağlamda karbon yoğun mallar üzerine bir vergi konularak bu malların fiyatı artmaktadır ve fiyatı artan karbon yoğun mallardan daha az tüketilmektedir. Bu şekilde yenilenebilir enerji kullanımı teşvik edilmeye çalışılmaktadır. Karbon vergisinde etkinliği sağlamak için elde edilen gelirlerin hangi alanlarda kullanılacağı önemlidir.

Introduction: Disability and decrease in the quality of life owing to the nature of schizophrenia are considered factors that predispose patients to parasitic infections. This study aimed to investigate intestinal parasites in schizophrenia and healthy volunteers with similar age-gender data and to contribute to the literature and/or clinical practice by determining the underlying cause of gastrointestinal complaints (such as side effects of psychiatric drugs or overlooked parasitic infection) in patients with schizophrenia. Methods: This case-control study included 30 patients with schizophrenia and 30 healthy volunteers. Their stool samples were examined for the presence of intestinal parasites primarily microscopically or serologically in cases requiring differential diagnosis. Results: The overall positivity rate of intestinal parasites was 25% (15/60). It is known that the increase in fructose consumption negatively affects kidney functions by increasing oxidative stress. Although exercise has been shown to have protective effects for the kidney, the effects of voluntary jogging exercise on changes due to fructose-rich diet are unknown. In our study, we investigated the possible effects of high fructose feeding on kidney function and histology and the role of voluntary physical activity in oxidative damage. The 21 male Sprague Dawley rats used in the experiment were divided into 3 groups. During the experiment, which lasted eight weeks, the sedentary + water (control) group received drinking water, while the sedentary + fructose water (F) and activity + fructose water (A + F) groups received drinking water containing 20% fructose. The A + F group performed voluntary physical activity for 8 weeks with the help of a cage with a rotating wheel. Urea and creatinine levels in blood samples taken at the end of the experiment, malondialdehyde and glutathione levels in kidney tissues were examined. In addition, histopathological examination of the kidney tissue was made. Serum creatinine level, which is an indicator of renal functions, was found to be higher in the F group compared to the control group (p = 0.012). While the malondialdehyde (MDA) level was higher in the F group compared to the control group, it was similar to the control group in the A + F group (p = 0.024 and p> 0.99, respectively). Glutathione (GSH) level was higher in F and A + F groups compared to the control group (p = 0.015 and p = 0.001, respectively). GSH level was significantly higher in the A + F group compared to the F group (p = 0.014). Compared to the control group, an increase in glomerular diameter, glomerulosclerosis rate and collagen density were observed in the kidney sections of the F group. Histological appearance similar to the control group was detected in the A + F group. As a result of this study, it was revealed that the negative effects and oxidative damage on kidney structure and functions due to high fructose feeding can be prevented by voluntary physical activity., Fruktoz tüketimindeki artışın oksidatif stresi artırarak böbrek fonksiyonlarını olumsuz etkilediği bilinmektedir. Egzersizin böbrek için koruyucu etkileri olduğu gösterilmiş olmasına karşın fruktozdan zengin beslenmeye bağlı değişimlerde istemli koşu egzersizinin etkileri bilinmemektedir. Çalışmamızda yüksek fruktozla beslenmenin böbrek fonksiyonu ve histolojisi üzerine meydana getirdiği olası etkiler ve oksidatif hasarda istemli fiziksel aktivitenin rolünü araştırdık. Deneyde kullanılan 21 adet erkek Sprague Dawley sıçan 3 gruba ayrıldı. Sekiz hafta süren deney boyunca Sedanter+su (kontrol) grubu içme suyu alırken sedanter+fruktozlu su (F) ve aktivite+fruktozlu su (A+F) grupları %20 fruktoz içeren içme suyu aldılar. A+F grubu 8 hafta boyunca dönen tekerlek bulunan kafes yardımıyla istemli fiziksel aktivite yaptı. Deney sonunda alınan kan örneklerinde üre ve kreatinin seviyeleri, böbrek dokularında malondialdehit ve glutatyon düzeyleri incelendi. Ayrıca böbrek dokusunun histopatolojik incelemesi yapıldı. Böbrek fonksiyonlarının göstergesi olan serum kreatinin seviyesi F grubunda kontrol grubuna göre yüksek bulundu (p=0,012). Malondialdehit (MDA) seviyesi F grubunda kontrol grubuna göre yüksek iken A+F grubunda kontrol grubuyla benzerdi (sırasıyla p=0,024 ve p>0,99). Bu çalışma ile yüksek fruktozla beslenmeye bağlı böbrek yapısı ve fonksiyonlarında meydana gelen olumsuz etkilerin ve oksidatif hasarın istemli fiziksel aktivite ile önlenebileceği ortaya konmuştur.

Obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) causes significant psychic distress and affects children's social and academic functioning. Approximately 80% of OCD cases begin in childhood. Earlier onset is associated with more severe OC symptoms, poorer treatment response, and a more unfavorable clinical course. A particular oxidative stress marker, thiol/disulfide homeostasis, using a new, comparatively inexpensive, easily calculated, easily accessible, repeatable, and fully automated method was investigated between pediatric patients diagnosed with OCD and a healthy control group in this study. This study is the first to address this subject in pediatric patients with OCD and aims to contribute to our knowledge of the etiopathogenesis and treatment of pediatric OCD. The study included children with OCD (n = 35, 52.2%) (drug free, comorbidity free) between 11 and 18 years of age and age- and sex-matched healthy controls (n = 32, 47.8%). The total thiol (p = 0.025) and disulfide (p = 0.001) levels and the disulfide/native thiol (p = 0.001) and disulfide/total thiol ratios (p = 0.001) were significantly different between the groups. Also, in the patient group, biochemical analysis revealed that the disulfide level (p = 0.05) and the disulfide/native thiol (p = 0.034) and disulfide/total thiol ratios (p = 0.039) differed significantly according to the presence of a family history of psychiatric disorders. Consequently, the results of our study show that thiol/disulfide homeostasis may affect the etiopathogenesis of pediatric OCD and can be utilized as a new method when evaluating oxidative stress.
