Marine bioconstructions are biodiversity-rich, three-dimensional biogenic structures, regulating key ecological functions of benthic ecosystems worldwide. Tropical coral reefs are outstanding for their beauty, diversity and complexity, but analogous types of bioconstructions are also present in temperate seas. The main bioconstructions in the Mediterranean Sea are represented by coralligenous formations, vermetid reefs, deep-sea cold-water corals, Lithophyllum byssoides trottoirs, coral banks formed by the shallow-water corals Cladocora caespitosa or Astroides calycularis, and sabellariid or serpulid worm reefs. Bioconstructions change the morphological and chemicophysical features of primary substrates and create new habitats for a large variety of organisms, playing pivotal roles in ecosystem functioning. In spite of their importance, Mediterranean bioconstructions have not received the same attention that tropical coral reefs have, and the knowledge of their biology, ecology and distribution is still fragmentary. All existing data about the spatial distribution of Italian bioconstructions have been collected, together with information about their growth patterns, dynamics and connectivity. The degradation of these habitats as a consequence of anthropogenic pressures (pollution, organic enrichment, fishery, coastal development, direct physical disturbance), climate change and the spread of invasive species was also investigated. The study of bioconstructions requires a holistic approach leading to a better understanding of their ecology and the application of more insightful management and conservation measures at basin scale, within ecologically coherent units based on connectivity: the cells of ecosystem functioning.

Introduction Medication changes involving levothyroxine—either dose titrations or switching formulations—occur frequently in patients with erratic thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels and persistent hypothyroid symptoms. We investigated whether switching patients from levothyroxine tablets to a gel cap formulation of levothyroxine might reduce dose adjustments and improve tolerability and efficacy outcomes. Objectives Primary study objectives included quantifying the percentage of patients achieving TSH levels within a pre-specified range, median dose changes experienced, and the percentage of patients with improved hypothyroid symptom control after switching from levothyroxine tablets to levothyroxine gel caps. Methods A retrospective medical chart review was conducted among 99 randomly selected hypothyroid patients who were switched from a tablet to a gel cap formulation of levothyroxine. Patients were required to have been on levothyroxine monotherapy for ≥1 year prior to the medication switch. Data was collected for 6 months pre-switch and up to 6 months post-switch. Firms that want to exploit Smart City’s opportunities need to cooperate with local governments. From a managerial point of view, there is scant research on how to select public partners in Smart City projects. In fact, while there are several cities claiming to be ‘smart’, not all cities fulfil the essential requirements for successful Smart City projects. This paper shows how to build successful public–private alliances in Smart Cities and, more specifically, how to select the right city to test, develop or sell smart technologies. This study uses a multiple-case research design and follows an exploratory and qualitative methodology. The results show that firms improve the success of their projects if they assess three main aspects of partner selection, these being partner complementarity, commitment and compatibility. The paper, therefore, provides several managerial implications regarding how firms may be more effective in selecting where to start their Smart City projects and how public organisations may become more attractive. Finally, academic implications, limitations and future lines of research are presented.

Impact of fishing gears and marine litter is a recognized global socio-ecological issue. Little is known about the extent of the problem in the Mediterranean seabed; even less information is available regarding litter distribution and its effects on deep rhodolith beds. Indeed, Mediterranean rhodolith beds are often remote and not yet sufficiently explored habitats, despite being internationally protected and recognized among the most important benthic communities for biodiversity maintenance. In this study, a quantitative assessment of marine litter and lost fishing gears, observed using a remotely operated vehicle, was carried out in 6 sites off the Campania Coast (Tyrrhenian Sea) characterized by different rhodolith covers. A negative correlation between abundance and richness of both marine litter and abandoned fishing gears with respect to the rhodolith cover was detected, suggesting that indirect human pressure along the coasts and direct effect of fishing activities might negatively damage these habitats. Molluscan assemblage of coastal area facing the very polluted Sarno River estuary to offshore (Gulf of Naples, Italy) was studied, focusing on temporal and depth-related distribution of species diversity, quali-quantitative composition and trophic guilds structure. A total of 9 stations, at depths ranging between 7 and 95m, were sampled in triplicate by means of a 0.17 m 2 Van Veen grab in four sampling occasions (2 seasons, winter and summer, during 2 years, 2015 and 2016). A total of 1,744 individuals, belonging to 78 species and 3 classes (Bivalvia, Gastropoda and Scaphopoda), was recorded. Bivalves, followed by gastropods, qualitatively and quantitatively dominated the mollusc assemblages and both these taxonomic groups showed the highest values in the shallower stations down to about 25 m depth. In the deeper stations, only the bivalve taxon was dominant, even though exhibiting a much lower species richness and abundance. On the overall, the molluscan species were ascribed to 6 feeding guilds: Suspension and deposit feeders were the dominant trophic groups, occurring at all stations along the bathymetrical gradient, while predators, detritus feeders, ecto-parasites and scavengers were poorly represented and mainly occurred in the shallowest stations. The mollusc composition and distribution pattern along the bathymetrical gradient over time show signs of structural stability that might be mainly due to the continuous supply of organic matter from the river mouth expanding to all area. These results are of primary importance for filling the knowledge gaps on benthic biodiversity over a still poorly known and very fragile coastal area under continuous anthropogenic pressures mainly through the runoff of a very polluted river.

The Antarctic environment harbours a variety of bacterial species that are of great interest for their unique features. Antarctic bacteria have indeed adapted to the life in the most extreme environment on Earth and are therefore the object of studies in relation to several issue ranging from the study of the origin of life to the biotechnology application of their biomolecules (enzymes, polysaccharides, et cetera). During the XXXIII Italian Antarctic Expedition we had the opportunity to collect samples of water and sediments from various locations in the Ross Sea including the Antarctic Specially Protected Area n° 161 (ASPA 161). The aim of the collection campaign was to investigate the bacterial community living in association with the benthic fauna (meio- and macrofauna) in the Ross Sea sector of Antarctica region. Here we report the preliminary results of the investigation of the bacterial community isolated from water samples collected in the ASPA 161. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence studies showed the majority of bacterial species isolated from this site belong to the genus Psychrobacter.
